About National Apple Dumpling Day

When is National Apple Dumpling Day? This holiday is always observed on September 17

National Apple Dumpling Day is today. On this September 17 holiday, become a member of the Apple Dumpling Gang. We are celebrating a tasty fall treat. It’s easy to make, and indeed even easier to buy. Apple lovers can’t resist this pastry, filled with sweet, delicious apples.

With the arrival of fall and cool weather, two things happen. First, the apple harvest begins. Secondly, people turn indoors to cooking and baking again. It’s only natural that apples are a big part of the cooking scene. Among the most popular fall treats are apple dumplings. For those of you who enjoy ice cream, some recipes include a scoop of ice cream atop a generous piece of warm Apple Dumpling. Sounds yummy!

So, enjoy some apple dumplings today. Chances are, you haven’t had it since last Fall!

The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” originated in the 1800s. It is believed the roots of this saying, recorded in 1866, came from the saying “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread”.

About American Legion Day

Date When Celebrated: This special day is always observed on September 16

Today is American Legion Day. The American Legion was granted its federal charter by Congress on this day in 1919. It was established to support and assist veterans returning from World War I. Since then, it has grown and supported veterans of all wars, and veterans of peacetime as well. They provide a social community and mutual aid to all members.

There are currently over 1.6 million member veterans at more than 12,000 posts worldwide. For the past few decades, the number of members are on a serious decline. Along with fewer members, the number of American Legion Posts is also on the decline. Despite the decline, there is no reduction in the services they provide to veterans. This is largely driven by fewer Americans serving in the military. Additionally, many of today’s veterans are choosing not to join the legion.

Happy American Legion Day!

Services Provided by the American Legion

American Legion Posts offer a place for veterans to meet, relax, share stories of their time in the service, and generally socialize with each other. Additionally, they have rooms for member meeting and rent the rooms out for member parties.

But, the American Legion Post offers much more to members. Here are some of the other things they offer to veterans:

Career Support – Assists in finding new career opportunities.

Educational Assistance – Help in college selection, as well as state and federal financial support programs. Eg. The GI Bill for education.

Benefits Assistance – Helps to connect members to the financial and health benefits they are entitled to. I.e. New home loans.

Discounts to goods and services offered to them by merchants.

History and Origin of American Legion Day

Formed, in 1919, this special day was created 90 years later in 2009. On September 15, 2009, Congress proclaimed September 16 as American Legion Day.

Emma M. Nutt Day

Telephone. When is Emma Nutt Day? September 1 holidays.

About Emma M. Nutt Day

When is Emma Nutt Day Celebrated? This holiday is always observed on September 1

This September 1 holiday honors and celebrates Emma M. Nutt Day. In 1877, Edwin T. Holmes, owner of the Holmes Burglar Company in Boston MA., invented the manual telephone switchboards. Emma Nutt became the first woman telephone operator on September 1, 1878. Emma loved the job and worked at it for 33 years.

Early telephone systems required an operator at a manual switchboard to connect and disconnect phone users. This special day celebrates the world of telephone operators. The telephone switchboard operator manually made the connections. It was a very important job for many until the invention of automated switchboards. Today, the position has been eliminated. Automated telephone systems replaced manual switchboards decades ago. Can you imagine what Emma would think about today’s cell phone world!?

Telephone Switchboard Trivia: The last manual telephone switchboard was used by the Kerman Telephone company in Kerman, Ca. They were replaced by an automated system in 1991.

A little side note about Emma: According to Emma, she was “very thankful that my first name was not Imma”.

How to Celebrate Emma Nutt Day

Here are a few things you can do to celebrate and enjoy this holiday:

  • First, look for a place where you can actually see a switchboard. Undoubtedly, this is a challenge as they are no longer in use.
  • Then, visit the Telephone Museum in Elsworth, Maine. During your visit, you will likely see an old switchboard.
  • Learn more about them and the operators that used them.
  • Ask the elder members of your family if anyone in the family was a switchboard operator.
  • Finally, if you see a switchboard, take a picture of it and post it on social media.

Today's Quote

“Man, as a general rule, owes very little to what he was born with. A man is what he makes of himself.” – – Alexander Graham Bell

History and Origin of Emma Nutt Day

We found no factual information about this special day. There is no documentation as to who created this holiday. If it wasn’t one of Emma’s family members or friends, then it was most likely a fellow telephone operator. Nevertheless, this holiday has been around for decades. While manual telephone switchboards existed in the 1800s, we are all but certain this holiday began sometime in the mid 1900s or later.

This Day in History

Additionally, here are some other things that happened on this day:

  • The Liberty Bell arrives in Philadelphia. (1752)
  • “Mary Had a Little Lamb” was published. (1830)
  • Cosmetics & fragrance company founder Estee Lauder was born on this day in 1908.
