National Corn Chip Day is today. It is a January 29 holiday. Fifty years ago, few Americans knew what these crunchy chips were. However,  today most of us cannot imagine life without this tasty, crunchy holder of salsa, cheese, and (mostly) Mexican dips. In addition to using them with dips, these chips are an important ingredient in a wide variety of Tex-Mex recipes. They are also sprinkled atop salads.

On this holiday, enjoy eating one of your favorite snacks. And, take our corn chip challenge. Eat corn chips for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks today! I don’t know about you. But, I will find that easy to do.

When you wake up this morning, say something nice about the person you see in the mirror. Certainly, there are many nice things you can say. Then, spend the rest of the day saying nice or kind things to everyone you meet. This is the way to celebrate Compliment Day. • It’s a cinch to find compliments for family and loved ones, even for your Mother-in-Law. (Tip: She’s probably a good cook.)

• Saying something positive about your boss or people you don’t like is a little more difficult. Take up the challenge. We know you can do it!

Remember: Silence is golden. Mama said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”. So, if after searching for something good to say, you can always choose to remain silent.

Compliment Day is celebrated by offering sincere compliments to people you know and meet. By all means, your compliments must be sincere. People will see right through insincerity, and you will do more harm than good.

How many compliments should you give out today? The common suggestion is five. Yes, they should be five different people.  

Chocolate Cake Day is today. This January 27 holiday is a chocolate lovers delight, and a day to eat cake. Why this a day to “bake your chocolate cake….and eat it, too!” On this day, a white or yellow cake will not do. Nor, will part chocolate, part white suffice. It must be chocolate, all chocolate. You can make milk chocolate, dark chocolate, fudge, or any other type of chocolate. And, there’s only one flavor of frosting that’s acceptable to use today. Of course, you know what flavor to use. 

During our original research, in the early 2000s, there were only a few references to this holiday anywhere, online or off. The few references we found were from Ecard and calendar websites. This might lead you to conclude that this is a day for (and by) the Ecard companies. But, we know better. This day is for you, and all of us chocolate lovers to savor and enjoy.

There are three objectives for today: To bake a chocolate cake. To decorate a one. And, to eat a piece or two. Of course, if you are too busy to bake or decorate a cake, then just eating a chocolate cake will certainly do!

For the Diet Conscious: You just might not want to know that there a one slice of chocolate cakes has approximately 250 to 500 calories and 30 to 50 carbs. But, don’t let this keep you from enjoying a slice today. 

Candy lovers today is your day. It’s National Buttercrunch Day, a January 20 holiday. Today you can enjoy buttercrunch the candy. Or you can have it in ice cream, cereal, snacks, trail mix, puddings, and in a variety of other ways. As a matter of fact, we challenge you to find different and unique ways to enjoy it.

Spend the day with one of your favorite snacks. Make it your personal goal to have something with buttercrunch at each meal, and as a snack. Tomorrow, you can return to the diet. Of course, if you prefer to keep your diet today, you can always have buttercrunch lettuce.

Neither the creator of this day nor original documentation as to the details of this holiday is known. So, we offer up the possibility that National Buttercrunch Day is not about candy. Rather, it’s about Buttercrunch lettuce. And, just maybe a home gardener created this day. What do you think!? Americans have plenty of stress and anxiety in their daily lives. Are you feeling a little stressed lately? Then, this special day is made for you! It’s Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. It is a January holiday. Where was this wonderful material during the holidays last month when everyone you met was stressed out? Well, it was around. All you had to do was look inside all those packages in transit from online E-tailers. 

Bubble wrap was invented in 1960. As anyone who has ever come in contact with it knows, bubble wrap is not just a protective wrapping for things. It is also a wonderful stress reliever! Just squeeze the bubbles in the Bubble wrap, and feel the stress disappear with each POP…POP…POP.

So, grab a piece of bubble wrap today, and go to town!

Is it true blondes have more fun? It is if they have a blonde brownie in their hand. National Blonde Brownie Day, a January 22 holiday, is a special day that is set aside to bake and eat blonde brownies. I don’t know about you, but this is going to be a delicious day!

What’s a blonde brownie, you ask? Well, as their name implies, they are a light, almost blonde color. Traditional brownies are dark brown. To make blonde brownies, light brown sugar is used in the recipe in place of dark brown chocolate.

On National Blonde Brownie Day, it’s your right and responsibility to bake blonde brownies and eat them. If you don’t have time to bake today, buy some and eat a few extra blonde brownies.

Note: The use of nuts and frosting on your brownies is optional.

Now here’s a day that I can really get into! Actually, I can “get into” the stuff inside of the can even more. What this author appreciates is a beer can that is full and icy cold. Beer Can Appreciation Day, a January 24 holiday, celebrates that great day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans. On January 24, 1935, the American Can Company and Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company first sold Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream ale in Richmond, VA. Major brewing companies quickly followed suit. Over 200 million cans were sold in the first year.

There’s a big market for beer cans. Many people are beer can collectors. And, we’re not talking about taking them back to the store to get your deposit back. If you come across an old can, do not throw it out. Rather, check out the prices in a collector’s catalog, or on eBay. The most valuable cans are unopened ones.

Collectors meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it, and drink it, of course. Then, they wash and dry it. For collectors, there is no shortage of types of beer, cans and bottles, and sizes. A beer can collector may have hundreds of cans and bottles. 

Beer Can Appreciation Day provides us with the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the many different kinds of beer cans. Enjoy today by starting or adding to your can collection. As you empty the new cans, drink the contents. After all, you don’t want to be wasteful do you?
