About the Religious Meaning of Christmas

With all the hype around Santa Claus, we need to stay focused on the true religious meaning of Christmas. And, that is the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is a time for coming home and being with family. The church family also comes home during the Advent season as we reflect upon the reason and true meaning of Christmas. More people go to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day than at any other time of the year. (Although Easter is a close second) Christians come home to their church to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and to wonder over his miraculous birth so long ago, Also, we rejoice for the hope he brings to the world.

Certainly, Heaven knows the world is not perfect. It is not at peace and there are people starving. Christ came into the world to save us and bring us hope. At Christmas time, we think thoughts of peace and hope. And, generosity abounds, too.

Brittain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand celebrate St. Stephans’s Day, or Boxing Day on December 26th. This is a day that the more fortunate give boxes filled with gifts to others who are less fortunate. More on Boxing Day.

The Christmas season for Christians is also called Advent it is a time of preparation and anticipation of the birth of Christ. The Advent wreath is a symbol of the season and holds much meaning. More on Advent and Advent Wreaths

Finding the Perfect Christmas Tree

Christmas Bells RInging
Christmas Tree Lot. When is Look for an Evergreen Day? December 19 holidays

How to Find the Perfect Christmas Tree

Going out in search of the perfect Christmas tree is a fun and memorable outing. Bring the whole family. You can make it simple and easy by going to your local Christmas tree lot for your tree this year. It sure would be quicker. But no, tradition calls on you to take a trek out to a Christmas tree farm or two. That’s where the perfect tree awaits your discovery. After all, Christmas is just not Christmas without this tradition. To learn how to find the perfect Christmas tree, simply read on….

Fresh or Pre-Cut

Many people are perfectly content to buy their trees from a tree lot. Although the tree will not be as fresh as a newly cut tree, you save time and effort. Frankly, some people just don’t have a lot of extra time during the holiday season, to be out in the cold in search of a tree. To many other people, going to a tree farm and searching for the perfect tree through the cold and snowy field, is a time-honored tradition not to be skipped.

You should also determine the variety of Christmas trees you want to get. See Varieties of Christmas trees.

Did You Know? Most trees bought at the local Christmas tree lot were cut down 3-4 weeks before arriving at the lot.

Here are the steps to finding the freshest and most beautiful tree your family has ever had.

Christmas Tree Ornament. December 19 holidays

Know Your Room Dimensions

An essential first step towards finding the perfect Christmas tree begins at home in the room where you will put your tree. Before you go, use a tape measure to determine the height from floor to ceiling. Then, subtract for the tree topper and the stand. Next, measure the approximate width that will fit where you want the tree to go. This is especially important, in corners and high-traffic areas. Finally, measure the diameter of the tree stand opening, to assure the tree will fit.

Christmas Tree Day

Before You Go to Find the Perfect Christmas Tree

Pick the Day and Dress for the Weather

The peak time for Christmas tree shopping is from the week before Thanksgiving to the week after. If you go later, the tree will be fresher, but many of the best ones might already be gone.

Pick the day that fits your schedule, check the weather forecast, and dress in layers. It’s far better to be overdressed than to shiver out in the cold.

Necessary Tools

You will need to bring:

  • Measuring tape – to measure the height and width of the tree.

  • Rope – You will need to tie the tree to your vehicle’s rooftop, or to the bed of your truck.

  • Saw – Unless you plan to dig the tree out of the frozen ground like Clark Griswald, you need to have a saw.

Selecting the Perfect Christmas Tree

Upon arrival at the Christmas Tree Farm, the search begins in earnest. Despite the cold, snow, and the kids’ complaints, take your time in selecting a tree. Look at it from all angles. It’s important to examine the trunk, to see if it is straight. Do not settle for a crooked trunk as it will not sit correctly in the tree stand.

It is important to measure the diameter of the trunk to make sure it will fit into the stand.

Check the Tree for Health and Freshness

Once you find the tree with the right height, width, and look, it’s time to check it out before cutting it down.

  • First, grab a branch and pull your hand towards you. If a lot of needles fall off, the tree is already too dry. Continue your search.

  • Take off a few needles and crush them between your fingers, to see if it gives off a strong, pleasant pine scent.

  • Shake the tree to see if a lot of needles fall off. If you are at a tree lot, lift the tree a couple of feet in the air and drop it, to see if a lot of needles fall out.

  • Finally, inspect the tree for insects.

  • Satisfied that you have found the perfect tree in every way, cut it down and bring it home.

. Ps Somewhere along the way, it is absolutely essential to get a cup of hot chocolate for everyone who participates in the excursion. This is the single most important part of the tradition.

Setting Up the Tree and Home Care

If you are not going to put up the tree right away, store the tree in a cool garage or breezeway. Place the trunk of the tree in a bucket of warm water.

Immediately before setting the tree in its stand indoors, make a fresh 1-inch cut off the end of the trunk.

DO NOT trim off the bark off of the trunk to make it fit your existing stand. This will cut off the veins that uptake water to the tree, causing it to dry out quickly.

Put the tree into the stand. Tighten and adjust the prongs so they are tight against the trunk, and that the tree is straight. Examine the tree from all angles before lighting and decorating.

Immediately add water and check the level daily. DO NOT let the basin dry out. Add fresh water as needed.

About Christmas Nativity Manger

What do you do when your wife is about to deliver a special child and there’s no room at the Inn? Why, you go around to the back of the Inn and settle into the manger with the animals. It’s a most humble beginning to the amazing life of Jesus Christ. The Christmas Nativity scene depicts the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas morning. Born in a manger, Jesus came to save humankind from sin. The nativity scene is truly the meaning of Christmas and why we celebrate this day. Without it, none of Christmas and its traditions would have evolved into the special day that it has become.

Most Christians recreate the Nativity scene in their homes or front lawns during the holiday. Displays are created indoors, or out. The Nativity set is the last Christmas display to be put away each year. It is kept up until January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. This is also known as the Feast of the Nativity or “Little Christmas”.

Nativity Scene, Fest of the Epiphany, All Kinds Day

The Elements of the Nativity Scene

A Christmas Nativity set typically includes the manger and numerous nativity figurines.

  • Manger (or stable) – usually made of wood, sometimes made of other materials like ceramics.
  • Crib – For Baby Jesus to lay in
  • Baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
  • Shepherds, Shepherd boy
  • Angels
  • The Three Wisemen, also known as the Three Kings – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar
  • Sheep, oxen, camels, and other barnyard animals
  • Straw – for the manger floor and around the front of the manger

Note: A Nativity scene should be simple, not elaborate. It should reflect upon the simplicity and humbleness of Christ’s birth. But, we believe selection or creation of a nativity set is no time to scrimp (unless you are tight on cash).  Use wood or natural materials. Don’t buy or use plastic. And, decorate the scene tastefully.

Christmas Bells RInging
Christmas Bells. When is National Ding-a-Ling Day?

About Jingle Bells Song

Jingle Bells was written and composed by James Pierpoint a minister, in 1857. He wrote it for children celebrating Thanksgiving at his Boston Sunday School. While it was originally written for Thanksgiving, the sleigh bells in the Jingle Bells music made it a popular Christmas song. It is one of the most popular Christmas carols.  Here are the Jingle Bells song lyrics.

When is Go Caroling Day? December 20 holiday. Christmas Carolers. Christmas Carol Song Lyrics

Jingle Bells Song Lyrics

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh

O’er the fields we go

Laughing all the way

Bells on bobtail ring’

Making spirits bright

What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh! what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way;

Oh! what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh.

A day or two ago

I thought I’d take a ride

And soon, Miss Fanny Bright

Was seated by my side,

The horse was lean and lank

Misfortune seemed his lot

He got into a drifted bank

And then we got upsot.

A day or two ago,

The story I must tell

I went out on the snow,

And on my back I fell;

A gent was riding by

In a one-horse open sleigh,

He laughed as there I sprawling lie,

But quickly drove away.

Now the ground is white

Go it while you’re young,

Take the girls tonight

and sing this sleighing song;

Just get a bobtailed bay

Two forty as his speed

Hitch him to an open sleigh

And crack! You’ll take the lead.

I Heard the Bells of Christmas Poem and Song Lyrics

Christmas Bells RInging
Christmas Bells. When is National Ding-a-Ling Day?

I Heard the Bells of Christmas Poem and Song

This is another popular classic Christmas song. I Heard the Bells of Christmas is an absolutely lovely poem and song. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) wrote I Heard the Bells of Christmas on December 25, 1864. Originally, he wrote it as a poem. The song “Christmas Carol” comes from this poem. Two stanzas of the poem referring directly to the Civil War are omitted in the song. Below is the I Heard the Bells of Christmas song lyrics.

When is Go Caroling Day? December 20 holiday. Christmas Carolers. Christmas Carol Song Lyrics

I Heard the Bells of Christmas Song Lyrics

I heard the bells on Christmas Day

Their old, familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet

The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,

The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along

The unbroken song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,

The world revolved from night to day,

A voice, a chime,

A chant sublime

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth

The cannon thundered in the South,

And with the sound

The carols drowned

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent

The hearth-stones of a continent,

And made forlorn

The households born

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;

“There is no peace on earth,” I said;

“For hate is strong,

And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The Wrong shall fail,

The Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

About Christmas Fruitcake

Just what is this stuff? And, does anyone ever actually eat it? It weighs a ton. You only see it around Christmas. After it is baked, it is virtually indestructible. Christmas Fruitcake lasts forever. You wonder…If I eat it, what will it do to me? Err, make that …is it even edible? Older generations know it all too well. With but one glimpse of it, younger generations often quickly dismiss it as a holiday doorstop. If it fits this description, then it certainly must be a…..Fruitcake!!!

During Great Grandma’s day, fruitcakes were as popular during the Christmas season, as ribbon candy. Okay, you don’t know about ribbon candy either, huh!?! Well, as the Christmas holiday neared, Grandma went to work in the kitchen. She lovingly took out all the dried fruits and nuts that she had so painstakingly harvested and dried during the summer months. These precious and sought-after fruits and lord knows what other goodies, were carefully added (glued??) onto, and mixed into, a thick and heavy, sugar-ladened cake. Then, she added liqueurs. Artificial preservatives were not invented yet.

The resulting fruit-covered cake proved heavier and denser than anything else known to man in the entire universe. It was virtually indestructible. At this point, one must pause to appreciate the baker. It was made with love by Grandma. So, no one dared to turn it down when given it as a gift. And, no one dared not to eat a bit if offered by grandma.

Santa Claus and Bag of Toys. North Pole, Reindeer names.

Passing the Fruitcake

If you receive a Christmas Fruitcake, the trick is to get this gift of love from grandma, and not have to “crack” it open and eat some before she leaves your house. With a little luck, grandma will forget to ask later if you enjoyed eating it. Many people consider passing the fruitcake as a game. Re-wrap the fruitcake in a box and give it to someone, anyone else. Once put into circulation as a Christmas gift, a fruitcake could be passed from one person to the next several times during the season. You might even be “lucky” and receive the same fruitcake gift twice!  In some families, you didn’t want to be the last to receive the “gift”, as you’d have the “joy” of eating it, or keeping it until you could give it as a gift next Christmas. In the meantime, it makes for a great doorstop.

Allegedly, nothing destroys a fruitcake, not even time. After the holidays, some people put it away until the following year, and put it right back in circulation! Fruitcake lore suggests it is often eaten decades after it was made!

If you receive a very heavy Christmas present this year, you just might be the recipient of a re-surging holiday tradition!

Did you know? National Fruitcake Day is December 27th.

Frosty the Snowman Song Lyrics. Classic Christmas Movies

Here are the Frosty the Snowman Song Lyrics

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul

With a corn cob pipe and a button nose

And two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say

He was made out of snow

But the children know how he came to life one day

There must of been some magic in

That old silk hat they found

For when they placed it on his head

He began to dance around

Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be

And the children say he could laugh and play

Just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day

So he said, Let’s run and have some fun before I melt away

Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand

Running here and there all around the square

Saying Catch me if you can

He led them down the streets of town

Right to the traffic cop

And he only paused a moment

When he heard him holler stop

Frosty the snowman

Had to hurry on his way

But he waved goodbye sayin’, Please don’t cry

I’ll be back again some day

And so it continued both day and night.

Noel Noel Noel Noel

Born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star

Three wise men came from the country far;

To seek for a King was their intent,

And to follow the star wherever it went.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the north-west;

O’er Bethlehem it took it’s rest,

And there it did both stop and stay,

Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,

Fell reverently upon their knee,

And offered there in his presence

Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the king of Israel.

Then let us all with one accord

Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,

That hath made heaven and earth of nought,

And with his blood mankind has bought.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.
