About Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the Snowman is a Christmas holiday favorite. He’s loved by old and young alike. This author can’t imagine Christmas without Frosty. Snowman lovers fill their home with a huge assortment of snowmen. If you are truly a Frosty fan (aka fanatic), you keep snowman decorations around your home and office all year.

Steeped in holiday tradition, Frosty is second only to Santa Claus as the focal point of the non-religious side of the holiday season. Many songs, stories, animated cartoons, and movies about Frosty have evolved over the years. Why is Frosty so lovable? No one knows. He just is.

Did you Know? The song “Frosty, the Snowman” was written by Jack Nelson and Steve Rollins in 1950.

Frosty the Snowman Song Lyrics

How to Make Frosty the Snowman

Making a snowman easy and fun. All you need is “packy” snow. This is snow that readily rolls into a ball. It occurs when the weather is above about 30 degrees. Roll three snowballs, with each a little smaller than the other. Set one atop the other, with the biggest on the bottom. Then, add a top hat, scarf, a carrot or button nose, and eyes made out of coal. Sticks for arms are common, too.

Voila, you’ve got Frosty the Snowman!!!!

About The Yule Log

The tradition of burning the yule log goes back about 1000 years ago in Europe. The tradition varies by culture and country, taking somewhat different forms in a similar theme. Its roots go back to pagan European cultures who celebrated the winter Solstice and the feast of Yule.

Ancient Romans held a winter celebration called The Feast of Saturnalia. The Yule celebration included big bonfires (Yule Fires). People danced around the Yule fire honoring their pagan gods of winter. In more recent times, the Yule log was a partially charred log from the prior year’s fire. The log was kept for a year to protect the home from fires. People place the log in the fireplace during the Christmas season. Then, it is very ceremoniously lit and burned. The whole event is a ceremony that varies by family and culture.

Today, we talk about the Yule log. We even sing about it. But, few families practice the traditions. Hundreds of years ago, everyone has a fireplace to cook and heat their homes. Nowadays, many people do not have a fireplace to carry on this ancient tradition. The thought and practicality of keeping a charred log in your home for a year, has also lost its appeal.

Did You Know? The Christmas season is sometimes called “Yule Time”.

Evergreen Christmas Wreath, Christmas holiday wreaths Christmas traditions

About Christmas Wreaths

Christmas wreaths have been used as a decorative symbol of Christmas for hundreds and hundreds of years. The best kinds are fresh evergreen wreaths, as they give off a pleasant pine scent when they are new. Holiday wreaths can adorn any part of your home, inside or out. In many homes, this symbol of growth and everlasting life can be found both inside and out. It is common to find wreaths on doors and walls, over the mantle, or hung in windows.

The wreath is made of evergreens, most often pine branches or holly. They can be real or artificial. But, an artificial one just doesn’t smell the same as an evergreen wreath. It is decorated with a variety of items including pine cones, holly berries, fruits, and just about anything you can imagine.

The wreath has significant meaning for the season. Its circular shape represents eternity, for it has no beginning and no end. From a Christian religious perspective, it represents an unending circle of life. The evergreen, most frequently used in making wreaths, symbolizes growth and everlasting life. Holly branches have thorns. When used in a wreath it represents the thorn on Jesus’ crown when he was crucified. Bright red holly berries symbolize Jesus’ blood that was shed for us.

Today, it is sometimes hard to remember the real meaning of Christmas. We get all caught up in the hype of Santa and his arrival. The wreath over the hearth brings warmth to our hearts as we stop to reflect upon the true meaning of this very special day.

Did You Know? While most of us think of holiday wreaths made of pine branches, some areas use a wide variety of materials. For example in New Mexico, Christmas wreaths are often made of dried Chiles.

About Christmas Trees and Christmas Flowers

Christmas trees and Christmas flowers are traditional symbols of the holiday season. And there are many of them. They are steeped in tradition and rich in meaning. To many of us, Christmas would not be complete without them. They adorn and decorate homes, churches, your place of work, and many public spaces. Christians can’t imagine Christmas without a tree. Accordingly, we see seemingly countless poinsettias everywhere we go.

Christmas Trees - Tradition and Meaning

A Little History: The origin of using Christmas trees has its roots in Germany during medieval times. It comes from the tradition of decorating an evergreen tree, called the “Paradise tree”. Others believe the first Christmas tree was decorated by Martin Luther during the 1700s. The Germans brought the tradition of decorating the tree to America in the 1800s. Once they arrived in the New World, the tradition spread rapidly in both America and around the world.

Finding the Perfect Christmas Finding a Christmas tree is one of the first steps in preparing for the holiday season.

Types of Trees: There are short needles, long needles, varying shades of green, and aarrgh…artificial. To most families, the whole process of selecting and decorating the tree is steeped in tradition from start to finish. The traditional tree absolutely has to be the same kind that you have had year after year, generation after generation. However, if you are looking to change varieties, there is plenty of selection. See: Varieties of Christmas Trees

Christmas Tree Selection and Care

Without a doubt, if you’re going out to get a live tree, then you are about to have a lot of fun. There are a few things you should know as you head out in search of the “perfect tree”. Christmas trees aren’t cheap. And, they can dry out quickly. Making sure the tree is healthy and fresh is job one. Getting one with a straight trunk is pretty important, too. When you get it home and into the room, your tree needs a little care and attention to help it stay fresh during the entire holiday season. Selection and Care of your Christmas tree.

The Genesee Brewing Company in Rochester, NY boasts a lighted Beer Keg Christmas tree. It stands outside the Genesee Brew House. The Beer Keg Christmas tree is 27 feet high, has 12 layers, and is made of 520 empty half kegs. Every year, there is a tree lighting ceremony with thousands of people in attendance. Their sister brewery, Pyramid Brewery in Seattle, Washington has also started the tradition. Their lighted Beer Keg Christmas tree stands 27 feet tall. More on the Beer Keg Christmas Tree.

Poinsettia Flowers. When is National Poinsettia Day? December 12 holidays.

Christmas Flowers

Poinsettia – Legend has it that a poor, young girl in Mexico was on her way to Christmas Eve mass. She had nothing to bring to the Christ child. So, she picked some green plants along the side of the road. When she arrived at the church, the plants had burst into beautiful red blooms. You guessed it, she was carrying Poinsettias. In the 1800s, U.S.Ambassador Joel Roberts Poinsett brought the plants back with him to the U.S. After that, he gave the plants, which would come to be named after him, as a gift to family and friends.

Christmas Cactus got its name as its tiny red flower opens up just in time for Christmas. Many people grow them as indoor houseplants. Christmas Cactus likes the dry air of your home in the winter. They also are popular Christmas gifts.

Mistletoe – Dating back to ancient history, Mistletoe is a sign of peace, goodwill, and love. Current tradition is for a young lady to stand under the mistletoe awaiting her lover’s kiss. Heaven help the young beau that does not take a hint. Want to harvest some Mistletoe? Then, get out your shotgun, because they are often used in harvesting Mistletoe.!

Holly is a tree or shrub with prickly green leaves and red berries. Its green and red colors are the colors of the season. Holly is attractive and used in a wide variety of decorations.

About Christmas Traditions and Symbols

Ah! Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year. Christmas traditions and symbols abound. It has both a strong religious and traditional meaning and roots. The entire Christmas season is a time of family and giving. It is truly a time that comes but once a year. Most countries celebrate Christmas. It is steeped in holiday tradition, like no other event. Every family has its specific traditions, too. We have to stick to our family traditions, no matter how tired we are….no matter how busy our schedule is. Without them, it’s not Christmas at all.

Evergreen Tree

Christmas Traditions - Trees are a Huge Symbol of the Season

Christmas Trees Holiday traditions using Christmas trees originated in Germany. German immigrants brought this tradition with them to America. Tree decorations included popcorn strings and lighted candles. Those candles were indeed proved dangerous and the cause of many Christmas tree fires.

Finding the perfect Christmas tree- If your family is like mine, finding the perfect tree is a tradition all to itself. Like millions of others, we shun the ease of an artificial tree and do it the hard (fun) way. Neither wind, nor sleet, nor rain, nor hail, nor mud(!!!) will keep us from trudging through one tree farm after another in search of that perfect size and shape. More on Finding the Perfect Tree.

Mistletoe, Christmas traditions

Christmas Traditions and Symbols

Mistletoe, is an international sign of peace, goodwill, and….love. One of the favorite holiday traditions of young lovers is the kiss under the Mistletoe. But don’t be surprised if you find mom and dad, or grandma and grandpa, sneak a kiss under the mistletoe. First, you have to get some sprigs of mistletoe.  Okay, guys, it’s time to get your shotgun and bag some Mistletoe because a shotgun is commonly used to shoot sprigs down from high up in the branches of trees.

Christmas Bells The roots of bell ringing go back to ancient pagan winter festivals. At the time, people rang bells to ward off evil spirits. But, bells were too much fun to be limited to warding off spirits.

Yule Log The tradition of burning the Yule log is steeped in tradition. While many holiday songs herald the traditions of the Yule Log, not too many families carry on the tradition in today’s society. Its roots run deep in European culture from over 1000 years ago.

Christmas Wreaths They are everywhere you look this time of year….why?

Cookies – Now, here’s a Christmas tradition you can really sink your teeth into. High in calories, high in fat, high in cholesterol. There is nothing better than homemade Christmas cookies for the holidays. Making holiday cookies is definitely a “family affair”. Cookies in all shapes and sizes, and no shortage of recipes. The more variety, the better. In many families, the best are ones the whole family can participate in. Among the favorites are cutouts. The kids can use a variety of cutouts and after they are baked shake on the colored sugars. Christmas Recipes

Poinsettia Flowers. When is National Poinsettia Day? December 12 holidays.

More Christmas Traditions

Poinsettias are a major symbol of the holiday season. Garden stores force millions of them to bloom just in time for the holiday season. The long-lasting blooms decorate homes, churches, workplaces, and more. Poinsettias are such important and impressive symbols, that a holiday in December is dedicated to them. See Poinsettia Day.

When do you open your presents? The majority of families find their presents under the tree on Christmas morning. And, the stockings hung last night by the chimney with care, are now carefully placed by the fireside by Santa, as he stuffed them too full of goodies to hang. In other families, Saint Nick comes on Christmas Eve. He usually sneaks in while the family is having dinner.

Did you know? In some families, it is traditional to wrap presents. But, not all families. Some family traditions have unwrapped presents in groups around or under the tree. Santa knows which families prefer unwrapped presents. It actually makes it easier for his elves

Silent Night Song Lyrics

Silent night, holy night.

All is calm, All is bright

Round yon Virgin Mother and Child

Holy Infant so Tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night.

Shepherds quake at the sight.

Glories stream from heaven afar;

Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ja.

Christ the Savior is born.

Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night.

Wondrous star, lend thy light.

With the angels let us sing

Alleluia to our King.

Christ the Savior is here,

Jesus the Savior is here.

Silent night, Holy night.

Son of God, love’s pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus Lord at thy birth;

About Santa Claus

Santa Claus is coming to Town! This is certainly music to a kid’s ears. And, that kid could be anywhere from one to ninety-two. No, that’s not just how the song goes. Rather, that’s how it is! Christmas brings out the kid in all of us. So all you good little boys and girls, take a few minutes out from decorating the tree and wrapping presents to enjoy a little time with Santa Claus and his world at the North Pole! And, don’t forget the reindeer. Learn about them and the reindeer names right here.

Santa Claus lies at the North Pole with his reindeer and elves. As you know, Santa’s reindeer fly him in his sleigh on Christmas Eve to the houses of good children all over the world. Meanwhile, the elves make the toys in Santa’s workshop. There are so many good children on Santa’s “Nice List”, that the elves must work all year long. All work and no play would indeed make them dull elves. But, don’t worry they have lots of fun and games. Santa keeps his elves very happy, and well-fed, too!

Did you Know? Biologically, you would think all of Santa’s Reindeer are female. Male Reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter. Female reindeer keep their antlers all year long. But kids, don’t worry. Santa uses a very special kind of reindeer found only at the North Pole. Both male and female reindeer at the North Pole keep their antlers until New Year’s.

Santa's Elves

The elves live with Santa Claus at the North Pole. Santa hires them to make the toys that he delivers to good children on Christmas Eve. By nature, they are short, jovial, and fun-loving creatures. Elves love to make toys. They sing and joke as they make them. While they work hard all year long, Santa makes sure they have plenty of time to play games and relax.

Santa’s Elves have a couple of other very important tasks. First, they help Santa to create his “Nice List” and the “Naughty List”. You don’t want to get on the Naughty List. Secondly, the elves watch children and report to Santa if a child is not being good. This allows him to revise the list, if need be. So, kid’s, you better not shout, you better not cry, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town…. your town!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Song Lyrics

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,

you know Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,

But do you recall

The most famous reindeer of all

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Has a very shiny nose

And if you ever saw it

You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer’s

Used to laugh and call him names

They never let poor Rudolph

Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,

Santa came to say,

Rudolph with your nose so bright,

Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight

Then all the reindeer’s loved him,

As they shouted out with glee,

Rudolph the red-nose Reindeer

You’ll go down in history

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Has a very shiny nose

And if you ever saw it,

You would even say it glows,

And all of the other reindeer’s

Used to laugh and call him names,

They never let poor Rudolph

Join in any reindeer games,

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,

Santa came to say,

Rudolph with your nose so bright,

Wont you guide my sleigh tonight

Then all the reindeer’s loved him,

As they shouted out with glee,

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,

You’ll go down in history
