National Watermelon Day

When is National Watermelon Day? August 3 holiday.

About National Watermelon Day

Date When Celebrated: National Watermelon Day is always observed on August 3

Mark your calendar and don’t miss this juicy August 3 holiday. This big and juicy fruit deserves it’s own big day. So, we give pause to celebrate big melons on National Watermelon Day. Sweet and tasty, watermelons, are one of summer’s favorite fruit. It’s standard fare at picnics. While this fruit is over 90% water, it sure tastes good. And, what picnic would be complete without a seed spitting contest?

Summer is the time to consume watermelons in large quantities. They ripen in the field in July and August, and even earlier in some southern states. July is the peak month, just in time for Fourth of July picnics. But, please don’t limit your consumption of watermelon to just this month. Stores carry watermelon for twelve months of the year.

World Record Watermelon: This fruit can grow quite large, make that huge. Sure, there are small, home garden varieties that just about fit into the palm of your hand.  But, watermelons can weigh hundreds of pounds each.  The world record heaviest watermelon weighed in at 350.5 pounds on October 4, 2013. It was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee.

We discovered no substantial information about the origin of this day. In the spirit of the day, we will tell you that it wasn’t us. We’ll put the blame on someone else for starting this day without recording the proper historical documentation.

We put the blame on Anne Moeller of Clio, Michigan for creating this day. On the first Friday the 13th of 1982, Anne’s alarm clock did not go off, and she overslept. As a result, she was late for appointments all day long. According to the story, she spent the day spreading the blame and making excuses for being late.

About International Astronomy Day

Date When Celebrated: International Astronomy Day is always observed on April 28

Grab your telescope, look for a dark place and pray for no clouds, as Astronomy Day is upon us. This September 28 holiday is a stellar event. Tonight is a time to look up to the stars.  It was established to promote astronomy to the general public. Astronomy clubs and groups use this day and night to help teach people about the stars, and other celestial bodies in the universe. These groups take advantage of this day to offer people a view of the stars through a telescope, if possible.

There is also an Astronomy Week. It begins the Monday before Astronomy Day.

Today is truly an Astronomical day!

How to Celebrate International Astronomy Day

Hopefully, you had a good night’s sleep last night, as you’re going to be up late searching the sky for all that you can see. And, make sure to find a place for viewing that is away from artificial lights that would dim your view of the sky.

  • First and foremost, look to the heavens. View the nighttime sky, preferably with a telescope or a pair of binoculars. The moon is always the first thing we see. Under magnification, you can see a lot of the lunar landscape. Then, turn to the planets. How many of these heavenly orbs can you see? Is the telescope big enough to see the rings of Saturn?
  • Look in the sky tonight and find the Big Dipper (see image above).
  • See how many constellations you can identify in the night sky.
  • Go to your local planetarium to see a show. It’s out of this world!
  • Go to NASA’s website to see if the International Space Station (ISS) will go over your area today. If so, look for it.
  • Also, you can attend an astronomy lecture or class during the day.

April Fools Day

When is April Fool's Day? Jester Hat. April 1 holidays

About April Fools Day

Date When Celebrated: April Fools Day is always observed on April 1

The joke is on you! Traditionally, April Fool’s Day is an opportunity for playing jokes or tricks on one another. The stranger and the more absurd the better. The challenge is to carry out a trick that is believable, if only for a little while. Tricks are most successful when played earlier in the day before a person is wise to what is going on. After that first cup of coffee, people are wise to the fact that it is April Fool’s Day, and that anything can happen. Younger children are also more gullible. And, everyone seems to get into the act, including media organizations like the BBC, which has played more than one joke on the general public.

Any tricks or jokes must be harmless and in good taste for the unsuspecting “victim”. And, we suggest you think twice before pulling one on the boss, even if he or she is known to be of good humor.

Important: April Fool’s Day jokes and gags must not be dangerous or hurt anyone’s feelings. Give your jokes and gags some thought before carrying them out. Then, have fun!

History and Origin of April Fools Day

The exact origin of this day is uncertain. It appears to have several possible origins and may have evolved in part from any number of them. To many, it dates back to France in 1564. At the time, April 1 was New Year’s Day. In 1564, New Years changed from April 1 to January 1. People who continued to celebrate April 1 as the beginning of the new year, were called “April fools”.  People would play jokes and tricks on them. April Fools Day also has roots in days of the Roman Empire, where jokes and pranks were also played on April 1.
