Here is a truly old-fashioned recipe, straight from Grandma’s kitchen. Everyone in our family uses this recipe to make cut out cookies for the Christmas holidays. This butter cut out cookie recipe dates back to Grandma’s kitchen in the 1920s. And, perhaps she got it from her grandma!?

This cut out cookie recipe is the most popular to make Christmas cookies. Try them for cut out cookies for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and any other occasion.

Yield: 6-7 dozen cut out cookies

Cut Out Christmas Cookies

Butter Cut Out Cookies Ingredients

3 cups flour, sifted

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup margarine, set out to soften

3/4 cups sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1 egg, unbeaten

1 1/2 teaspoons Vanilla

How to Make Cut Out Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 400 ° F.

  2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  3. Cream together well, the margarine and sugar.

  4. Add egg, milk, and vanilla. Mix together well.

  5. Gradually add in the flour mixture. Add 1/4 at a time and mix together with a big spoon.

  6. Chill dough overnight.

  7. Take the chilled dough from the refrigerator and divide it into two.
  8. Roll out the dough to the thickness that you like for your cut out cookies. Use your favorite cutouts.

  9. Put cookies onto ungreased cookie sheets.

  10. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes, depending upon thickness.

  11. Allow to cool.

  12. Use your favorite frosting recipe and decorate it with colored sugars and candy balls.
