About World Gratitude Day

When is World Gratitude Day? This holiday is always observed on September 21

World Gratitude Day, a September 21 holiday, is your opportunity to show your gratitude and appreciation. The United Nations Mediation Group created World Gratitude Day to express appreciation for the great things that individuals and groups do. This recognition is on a global basis. According to their website: “World Gratitude Day presents an award to someone who we feel has done something outstanding in the spirit of Globalism.” But, you do not have to have some huge global accomplishment. Rather, look for something that fits this description in your local area.

The United Nations Mediation Group also suggests that you find something to be grateful for, and remember the feeling.

On a smaller scale, seek to give gratitude and appreciation to people in your life who have done good deeds. It could be something as simple as a “thank you” or a card of thanks to someone. Or, you could offer some type of certificate or plaque of appreciation from a group you belong to, for contributions from individuals inside or outside of your group.

When is the biggest day to express gratitude? Why, it’s of course Thanksgiving!

Happy World Gratitude Day!

How to Celebrate World Gratitude Day

First, support the UN Mediation Group’s efforts.

Next, show your gratitude and appreciation toward induvial and groups that do good things for globalism.

World Beard Day

World Beard Day

About World Beard Day

When is World Beard Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in September

Trim your beard in preparation for this holiday. Today is World Beard Day, a day of celebration around the world. It is a day to celebrate your beard and to celebrate those whose face is covered with hair. One of the goals of this international day is to promote and elevate the status of beards throughout the world. If you have a beard, there is to be no work for you today. Of course, trimming a beard is not work. Rather, it’s more like a fun activity. Simply relax, enjoy, and proudly show off your beard. It is a day for those who wear beards to be pampered by beardless folk. On this day, those around you are supposed to wait on you hand and foot…. and beard.

Back in the day, as in the day of the Caveman, all the guys wore beards. There were no shaving kits or shaving cream. Back then, the modern Caveman always wore a full, and I’m certain, stylish beard. The idea of shaving didn’t catch on until much, much later. By about 4,000 B.C., we know people began shaving their beards. A rudimentary form of shaving cream was developed at the time by Sumerians in Mesopotamia. Nowadays, a significant minority of men wear beards. The exception to this is the Arab world, where beards are customary.

Sporting a beard is a way to express yourself and your individuality. There’s a huge variety of beard styles. The full beard often comes to mind first. But, let’s not forget stylish goatees or the Fu Manchu beard. One of the most popular styles today is a short beard of just 2-3 days growth or a week at most.

Have a Happy World Beard Day!

The Long History of Beards

Here’s an interesting historical fact: There were only five U.S. presidents who wore beards. The last president to have a beard was the 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893).  The other four are Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and James Garfield. The last presidential candidate to sport a beard was Republican Charles Evans Hughes in 1916. He lost. My times have changed.

Do You Know who the two most famous beard wearers are? Jesus Christ and Santa Claus!

How to CelebrateWorld Beard Day

  • Organize, and/or participate in a World Beard Day event
  • Show off your beard
  • Take the day off of work
  • Let others pamper you.
  • Read a book, or watch a movie about famous bearded people.
  • Trim a beard.
  • If you do not have one, stop shaving today, and start a beard.

Did You Know? If you have a beard, it is taboo to shave it today. Doing so is considered disrespectful. On the other hand, if you currently do not have one, why not begin growing a beard today!? Rip Van Winkle would be so pleased.

Today's Quote

“A girl can wait for the right man to come along. But in the meantime, that doesn’t mean she can’t have a wonderful time with the wrong ones.” – – Cher

History and Origin of How to Celebrate World Beard Day

It is speculated that the roots of World Beard Day dates back to around 800 A.D. Danish Vikings had a special day to glorify beards and those who wore them, which was most men at that time.

We do not know who created and promoted the modern World Beard Day.

VJ Day

About Victory over Japan Day

VJ Day History

Victory over Japan Day marks the end of World War II. The war in the Pacific was hard fought and bloody. However, by early 1945, the tide had definitely turned, and the U.S. military was fighting island by island towards Japan. Resistance was fierce. Casualties on both sides were high.

The U.S. had developed the atomic bomb. The U.S. government was anxious to end the war and stop the loss of American lives.

On August 6th, 1945, the United States military dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan in an effort to force Japan into an immediate, unconditional surrender. Instead of immediately surrendering, the Japanese government debated what to do. So, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, over the city of Nagasaki, Japan.

On August 14, 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito cabled the U.S. to surrender and agreed to the terms of the Potsdam Declaration.

On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world. World War II was finally over. Hostilities finally came to an end.

On September 2, 1945, the Japanese formally surrendered aboard the U.S. battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. President Truman declared this to be V-J Day.

Did You Know? The battleship USS Missouri was chosen for the formal surrender ceremony, as she was named after President Truman’s home state.

When is VJ Day?

Historically, World War II ends with the surrender of Japan. There are three key dates.

  • August 14 – Japan surrenders
  • August 15 – Surrender announced to the world
  • September 2 – Ceremony and formal signing of the surrender

VJ Day marks the end of WWII and the cessation of fighting against Japan. It is called “Victory In Japan Day or “Victory Over Japan Day”.

The confusion over three dates:

There is some confusion over what when to V-J Day. You can consider any (or all) of the three dates as V-J Day. President Harry S. Truman caused some of this confusion……..

On August 14, 1945, the Japanese government sent a cable to the U.S. stating their surrender. As a result, this is the date of most modern observances.

On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world. This sparked spontaneous celebrations over the final formal ending of World War II.

On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri. At the time, President Truman declared September 2 to be VJ Day.

Regardless of which day you view as VJ Day, World War II was finally over. Thus, the world rejoiced at the conclusion of the worst war in history.

Aircraft Carrier Navy Day. When is Armed Forces Day?

How to Observe VJ Day

  • First, read a historical book about WWII in the Pacific theater.
  • Watch a WWII movie about the war against Japan. May we suggest “Pearl Harbor”?
  • Most importantly, never forget the courageous men and women in our military who fought, and especially those who gave their lives to protect our freedom.  They were truly the “greatest generation”.

About Working Parents Day

When is Working Parents Day? This holiday is always observed on September 16

Working Parents Day, a September 16 holiday, gives recognition to moms and dads who work hard to provide for their children. They have two jobs. First, they are raising kids and taking care of the family. Then, everyday dad, and often mom, go off to work. They work hard to earn money to make ends meet. They work hard to be able to afford the extras that kids want and need. This includes things like school trips, funding the proms, athletics, music, dance classes, clubs, and much, much more.

Thus, today is a chance for the kids to show a little appreciation. We suggest doing the dishes, cleaning up, and overall doing extra chores around the house. If you are old enough, make dinner for the folks.

Important Note: This day speaks to “working parents”. However, we believe that “stay at home moms and dads” fit this classification, too. They just might work harder than anyone.

How to Celebrate Working Parents Day

Here are some things to do during this holiday to make it extra special:

  • This is not a day of gift-giving, because it is a day to show appreciation and to help out.
  • Kids, let mom and dad know you appreciate all that they do for you and for the family.  After all, when you think of it, they do a lot for you.
  • Don’t add any additional burden or request of them on this day.
  • Make dinner f you are old enough. Definitely wash, dry, and put away the dishes tonight.

Today's Quote

“The first half of our lives are ruined by our parents, the second half by our children.” – – Clarence Darrow

History and Origin of Working Parents Day

Despite our extensive research, we found no factual information about this special day. Most likely, it originated from a child, or a group of children, who wanted to give some thanks and appreciation to their hard-working parents.

Or, perhaps it was a working parent who needed a break. Yet, when it came time to document this day and claim ownership of it, they were too tired to write about it.

This Day in History

Working Parents Day is not the only happening on this day. Additionally, here are some other events that happened on this day:

  • The Mayflower sets sail from Plymouth, England. It carried pilgrims headed to the New World, to escape religious persecution. (1620)
  • The Great Seal of the United States of America is impressed on an official document for the first time. (1782)
  • Magician David Copperfield was born on this day in 1956.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. The governors of dozens of states have issued proclamations in support of Women’s Friendship on this day.

Wife Appreciation Day

When is Wife Appreciation Day? This holiday is observed on the third Sunday in September

The objective of this special day is for wives without children to receive appreciation from their husbands. Mother’s Day is for wives with children. So, today is an opportunity for husbands in a childless marriage, to recognize the value of their wives. Let her know how important she is to you, and how much she is appreciated. Wife Appreciation Day is a day that she truly deserves. Thus, if you know what’s good for you, all of you guys out there will remember and fully participate in this holiday.

It should be very easy to show appreciation to your wife, for who she is, and for all the great things she does for you. You know her well, her likes and dislikes. Begin the day by telling her that she is appreciated. Give her a few examples of why. Then, select a couple of things she likes or likes to do, and make it happen. Giving her a gift is perfectly okay, but it is not a requirement.

While this day was originally intended to honor wives in a childless marriage, we encourage all husbands to show appreciation for their wives on this day. Showing your appreciation today is a basic ingredient for a long and happy marriage. As the old saying goes: “Happy wife, happy life.” Certainly, this is true.

Uncle Sam Day

When is Uncle Sam Day? September 13 holidays

About Uncle Sam Day

When is Uncle Sam Day? This holiday is always observed on September 13

Uncle Sam Day celebrates an important and powerful symbol of America. It is a September 13 holiday. Uncle Sam is certainly one of America’s most recognized symbols. He is second only to the American Bald Eagle. He appears on everything from military posters to cartoon images to advertising media. On military posters, he is usually shown with the caption “I want you!” He is perhaps, the most recognizable symbol in the world.

Did you Know? There are other human symbols representing our country. However, none are anywhere near as popular. They include Brother Jonathan, who largely disappeared after the arrival of Uncle Sam, and Columbia, a female.

How to Celebrate Uncle Sam Day

By all means, you will enjoy this holiday. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate it:

  • Get some of his posters and display them at home, in school, or in the office.
  • Read a little more about the history of this important American icon.
  • Have a party or picnic in his honor. Only include American dishes.
  • Equally important, teach others about this very special uncle.
  • Also include his image on emails you send today.

Today's Quote

“The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults.” – – Alexis de Tocqueville

History and Origin of Uncle Sam Day

There are two theories as to how our famous uncle came into existence. Both theories date back to the early 1800s.

First, the officially recognized theory dates back to soldiers stationed near Troy, New York during the war of 1812. Barrels of meat they received was stamped “U.S.” The supplier was Samuel Wilson of Troy, New York. Soldiers jokingly referred to him as “Uncle Sam”. Then in 1813, the first image of him appeared. In 1961, the U.S. Congress issued a resolution recognizing “Uncle Sam” Wilson and authorizing a monument in his hometown in Troy, NY.

Also, there is a second, less popular theory of his creation. During the early 1800s, Irish immigrants were coming to America. Some believed that Uncle Sam emerged from these immigrants. In their Gaelic language, the United States of America was “Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá”, abbreviated “SAM”.

Uncle Sam Day became official in 1989 when a joint resolution of Congress designated September 13 “Uncle Sam Day”.  This date was selected, because “Uncle Sam” Wilson was born on September 13, 1776.

More September 13 Holidays

Additionally, here are some things that happened on this day:

  • New York City becomes the Capitol of the United States. I bet you didn’t know that! (1788)
  • Nintendo introduces the first Super Mario game. (1985)
  • Ben Savage, actor, “Cory Matthews” on TV series “Boy Meets World”, was born on this day in 1980.

About UK National Fitness Day

When is UK National Fitness Day? This holiday is observed on the fourth Thursday in September

Today is UK National Fitness Day in the United Kingdom. It exists to celebrate the fun of fitness and physical exercise. According to the creators, this day is intended to “inspire people to commit to changing their routines by adding physical exercise and workouts for a lifetime of better health”.

Most people know full well, that physical exercise and a regular routine of working out leads to a healthier, more energetic life. Perhaps best of all, it can extend your life by many, many years. So, why is it so hard to do? Why is it so easy to slip and get away from taking the best of care of our bodies? For one thing, it takes time and dedication. We all have busy schedules. It is an easy “cop out” to say we’re too busy to go to the gym. Secondly, going to the refrigerator to grab a bite to eat or a bottle of beer, is much easier than working out or jogging for a half hour or so. And, walking back and forth to the refrigerator is exercise, isn’t’ it!?

By all means, today the excuses must stop. Today is a call to action, a call to help you to live years longer and to live healthier for longer. Put on your jogging shorts and shoes and hit the pavement. Or, head off to the gym and begin to tone up those muscles, while you improve your lung capacity and heart health. Before your head hits the pillow tonight, you have one more task that you must perform. Pull out your calendar for the month and pencil in a regular and routine time on your calendar to continue what you’ve started today.  Better still, mark it on your calendar in ink, so you can’t erase it!

How to Celebrate UK National Fitness Day

  • Go to the gym and get some exercise.
  • Dust off your treadmill and get a workout.
  • Take a jog outdoors.
  • Join a friend in a long hike.

Related Holidays

There are two “National Fitness” days. There is one in the U.S. in May. The other is in the United Kingdom, and is celebrated in September. It is great to have a day in these two countries to promote physical health and well being. However, this is an issue for all human beings all over the planet. We might suggest that the creators of these two important holiday events, get together to expand this to an international holiday held on a single date. Short of that, we encourage people all over the world to celebrate both of these days by doing things to get healthy and to stay healthy.

About Teddy Bear Day

When is Teddy Bear Day? This holiday is always observed on September 9

Today is Teddy Bear Day, a September 9 holiday. A Teddy Bear is a special friend to children all over the world. He’s cuddly. He makes you feel secure in an otherwise insecure world. And, children need both comfort and security. He’s lovable, too. Your bear is both a companion and a comforter. And, he’s not afraid of the dark. He’ll keep you safe. While we may think of them as a child’s friend, many adults have teddy bears, too.

As we become adults, some find it difficult to give up our teddy bears. We feel there is no reason to give him up. Many adults keep their childhood bears around all their lives. And some adults buy new ones for their own comfort. It’s perfectly normal….and okay.

Have a happy and cuddly day with your favorite bears!

History of Teddy Bears

Did you ever wonder how these cuddly bears came about?

During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President of the United States. He was a hunter. While hunting in Mississippi in 1902, he refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up on this story and made a cartoon of the event. Toy store owners, Morris and Rose Michtom, wrote to President Roosevelt for permission to call their stuffed animals “Teddy Bears”. Teddy bears became wildly popular. Their company went on to become the Ideal Toy Company, one of the largest toy companies in the world.

Certainly, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this holiday.

  • Spend some time during both the day and night with your teddy bear. Cuddle up to him. Talk to him. And do all of your favorite things together.
  • Parents and adults: No child should grow up without a cuddly bear, if not more than one. Therefore, if you know of any kid without one, use this day to buy one for them.
  • Donate a teddy bear to an orphanage, a child in the hospital, or an organization supporting children in need.

History and Origin of Teddy Bear Day

Despite our extensive research efforts, we found no factual information about this special day. There is an occasional reference to this day on February 22.

A Vermont Teddy Bear company has declared its own “National” Teddy Bear Day on November 13th. We believe this is for the promotion of their products. We did not find information to support this as a National day. Zoos, museums, toy stores, and many kids’ venues declare “Teddy Bear” days for various reasons. This leads to references of this holiday on a variety of dates.

We believe these lovable bears are very important to children (young and old). So, he deserves a day of recognition.
