When is Happiness Happens Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 8

I believe in happiness for myself and others, don’t you!? Of course, you do! Everyone around the world should be happy. So, put a smile on your face. Today is Happiness Happens Day. On this August 8 holiday, we are encouraged to let our happiness shine through for all to see. Originally called Admit You’re Happy Day, this holiday also encourages us to take efforts to bring joy and jubilation to others. We should stop at nothing short of sheer bliss and euphoria.

Happiness is contagious. And, it is important to our overall well-being. You can play a big role in spreading happiness to others. Conversely, the negative things you do can detract from it. While the title of today’s holiday says, “Happiness Happens”, it’s not always an automatic thing. Often, to attain it we have to work at it, pursue it, and create an environment for happiness to flourish for ourselves and others. First, put Debbie Downer on notice, that good vibes, happy thoughts, and happy behaviors are the only way to go on this cheerful day.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Our forefathers knew what they were talking about when they wrote the Declaration of Independence. In the second paragraph of the declaration, they directly address our right to happiness when they wrote:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Our forefathers recognized our right to the pursuit of happiness. That’s why they included it so clearly in the Declaration of Independence. It enables the freedom to seek contentment, prosperity, and well-being in our lives. But that does not mean happiness just happens. Rather, they declared it is our right to pursue it and make it happen. Then, once we attain happiness, we have a right to enjoy and retain happiness in our lives. 

What is happiness? Our forefathers left out the specifics. They left it to the individual to form their own definition. Why? Simply because happiness is an individual thing. It varies from person to person. And the things that make a person happy can and do change.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Happiness Happens Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in Happiness Happens Day:

  • Just let happiness happen.
  • Think about what makes you happy. Then, go for it.
  • If you are not currently happy, pursue happiness.
  • Be a “Smile Starter”. Help to spread happiness in others.
  • Stop at your local bar for “Happy Hour”.
  • Get your kids a “Happy Meal”.
  • Watch reruns of the television sitcom Happy Days.
  • Dance!
  • Hold a happy event.
  • Send happy news and messages via social media, texts, and emails.
  • Visit someone who is down or going through problems. Do your best to cheer them up.

History and Origin of Happiness Happens Day

in 1998, Pamela Gail Johnson from Irving, TX., a certified professional coach, founded the Secret Society of Happy People. According to Johnson, she did so to “give mostly happy people their own tribe.” Then, in 1999, the group created Admit You’re Happy Day. Eventually, this holiday became known as Happiness Happens Day. In 2000, the Secret Society of Happy People proclaimed August Happiness Happens Month. Every year, the group announces a theme for the current year’s holiday. They also hold an annual online Happyathon. This event encourages sending online messages to social media, texts, and emails containing happy news and messages.

The Secret Society of Happy People is not so secret anymore. They have dropped the word “Secret” and now they simply call themselves the Society of Happy People. Their goal is to create a happier world. They even offer speakers and coaching services to help you to build and enjoy a happy life.
