National Chinese Takeout Day

When is National Chinese Takeout Day? November 5 holiday

When is National Chinese Takeout Day? This holiday is always observed on November 5

Every culture has its own cuisine. Over time, each culture develops its own dietary tastes, driven somewhat by the availability of local food sources, including herbs and spices. Chinese culture has evolved over many thousands of years. As a result, Chinese cuisine is one of the most diverse and delicious of all. Today is National Chinese Takeout Day. On this November 5 holiday, we have the pleasure of enjoying a truly exquisite food holiday. And, with it, we can choose among a very wide array of meals. The title of this holiday makes it clear that we should specifically partake in takeout food. So, go online and order a variety of Chinese menu items. We suspect your only problem today is determining which items to order and how much.

To properly partake in this delicious holiday, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

  • Of course, place a takeout order for Chinese food from your local Chinese restaurant. Order your selections to go. Include an order of egg rolls, too. It doesn’t matter whether you go out to pick it up, or order it through a delivery service like Door Dash.
  • Hot tea or rice wine is the  everage of choice for this holiday.
  • You will also want to select a soup. May we suggest Wonton or Egg Drop soup?
  •  Certainly, make sure to include fortune cookies for everyone.
  • Lastly, eat the meal with chopsticks. If you don’t know how to use them, today is the perfect time to learn the art of using chopsticks. It’s not that hard.

Types of Chinese Cuisine

There are several major types of authentic Chinese cuisines, along with many lesser-known types of Chinese cooking. They are largely aligned with the major areas or regions of China.

Chinese immigrants began to arrive in America in the 180os. They brought their cultural traditions with them. Concurrently, they brought recipes from their home regions. As they assimilated into their new world, some recipes remained unaltered from their home countries. Although, the recipes they brought were sometimes altered to include foods, herbs and spices more readily available in America. They further altered recipes to better match the tastes of Americans who came to their restaurants. As a result, your best chance to enjoy authentic Chinese food, is to go to China.

Here are the eight major types of Chinese cuisine:

  • Anhui Cuisine
  • Cantonese Cuisine, also known as Guandong
  • Fujian Cuisine
  • Hunan Cuisine
  • Jiangsu Cuisine
  • Shandong Cuisine
  • Sichuan Cuisine
  • Zhejiang Cuisine

Of course, there are many other types of Asian cuisine that does not originate in China. While we sometimes mistakenly think of them as “Chinese cuisine”, they are distinctly different. For example, the ever-popular Thai food is Asian, but not Chinese.

Did You Know? There are approximately 45,000 Chinese restaurants in the United States. Surely, a few of them are located in your community.

How to Celebrate National Chinese Takeout Day

How do people celebrate this great Oriental food holiday? Here’s how:

  • First, call your favorite Chinese restaurant and order takeout.
  • Make it a party! Rather than eating takeout by yourself, invite your friends over to your house. Then, order takeout. Don’t forget to get fortune cookies for everyone. You never know, it could be someone’s lucky day.
  • Be daring. Buy something on the takeout menu that you’ve never had before.
  • Learn more about China. It’s a huge country. As a matter of fact, it is the most populous country in the world. And, Chinese culture is both fascinating and storied. Learn much more about China.
  • If there isn’t a nearby Chinese restaurant, make it at home. Find a Chinese recipe.
  • Bring a box of Fortune cookies to work. Then, place them in a bowl to share with coworkers.

Important Chopstick Etiquette:  When using chopsticks, never jab them into the food on the plate. This is considered both insulting and impolite. Rather, place the chopsticks on a napkin beside the plate, or lay them flat on top of the plate of food.

About International Cake Day

When is International Cake Day? This holiday is always observed on November 26

Is your sweet tooth acting up? That’s no surprise, as today is International Cake Day. On this November 26 holiday, there’s no doubt what to make to satisfy your sweet tooth on this sweet and delicious food holiday. The most common ingredients are flour, eggs, sugar, baking powder, and water. But, that’s where commonality abruptly ends. There are countless ingredients and flavorings you can add to the batter. After it bakes and cools, comes the fun part as you add your favorite flavor of frosting and decorate it. Decorating them opens up a whole world of possibilities. This is where a creative baker uses his or her ingenuity to create an artful masterpiece.

There is some confusion about the title of this day. It is called World, International, National, or simply Cake Day. Our research discovered that the vast majority of references refer to it as an international holiday.  However, it doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as you enjoy a few slices of cake today.

As you celebrate this delicious holiday, we hope you have our cake and eat it, too, And of course, don’t forget the candles!

The History of Cake

Almost all ancient cultures developed a form of cake.  Among them are ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, and Norse cultures. It is believed the Egyptians were the first to make them at least three thousand years ago. The Chinese make a special “Mooncake”. China holds an annual Chinese Moon Festival or Mid-autumn festival where mooncakes play a prominent role in the celebrations. The word “Cake” evolved from the Viking Old Norse word “Kaka” around 1200 – 1300. When the pilgrims arrived in the New World, they found Native Americans making baked maize cakes called “appone” or “ponop”. They made them with ground corn, water, and salt. Modern cakes date back to the 1700s.

Over time, cakes became associated with a wide variety of ceremonies and celebrations.  We enjoy them at weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays.  We bake them to celebrate important events, milestones, and accomplishments. And, of course they are so good, we make them any day of the year just because they taste so good. That’s no surprise, as there are endless flavors, and a wide variety of frostings. And, perhaps what makes them look and taste so great, is how we decorate them.

Blasé Day

Earth Animation. How to Create Holidays

When is Blasé Day? This holiday is always observed on November 25

Are you bored or indifferent with your life and the things you have? Are you unimpressed with all of the excesses your world has to offer? Then, we have great news for all of the apathetic and world-weary folks out there. Today is Blasé Day. Boredom rules the day. And, yawning is in keeping with the spirit of this holiday. On this November 25 holiday, being unimpressed with your surroundings is perfectly okay. Openly expressing your displeasure is okay, too. However, we do issue a caution as you don’t want to come across as a snob when you shun the luxuries your world has to offer. Also, this day should lack excitement.

The word Blasé originated in France in the 1800s. It’s all about being unimpressed or bored with the things you have. And, the more well-off you are, the less likely you are to be impressed by more of them. For example, your next trip becomes “been there, done that”. And, your jewelry box is already filled with glittering baubles and bangles. As you tour a museum or art gallery for the umpteenth time, it becomes impossible to stifle a yawn.

People normally celebrate Blase Day in one of two ways. The well-to-do can openly express their displeasure with the opulent and excessive world around them. Those less fortunate can strive to get ahead in the world so they can also enjoy some of the joys the world has to offer.

How to Celebrate Blase Day

As you go through this boring day, there’s no need to resist stifling a yawn. Rather, it’s in keeping with the spirit of this holiday. Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate and enjoy Blasé Day:

For the Well-To-Do:

  • First and foremost, don’t hold back. Express your disdain for the decadent, over-indulgence of the riches around you.
  • Spend the day in a simplistic manner.
  • Offer something fun and enjoyable to someone in need. For, example, give them free tickets to a local movie theater, or a play at a theater.
  • Become a philanthropist. Donate some of your wealth.
  • Museums can offer low-cost or free admission for the day.

For those Less Fortunate:

  • All in all, strive to get ahead. Look for a better-paying job.
  • Savor and enjoy the limited luxuries in your “have-not” life.
  • Look for inexpensive luxuries. Are there any things that are low-cost or free? Perhaps, a visit to your local museum or an art gallery is within your budget.
  • Splurge on a fancier restaurant than you normally go to.

World Science Day for Peace and Development

About World Science Day for Peace and Development

When is World Science Day? This holiday is always observed on November 10

Science is a world of discovery. It offers countless benefits and products to mankind and society. Certainly, discoveries and breakthroughs in science make our everyday lives much better. And, sometimes, science leads to weapons of war, and results in not-so-great benefits to mankind. Today is World Science Day for Peace and Development. The United Nations created this November 10 holiday to encourage us to better understand science. Accordingly, it encourages us to use science for peaceful means and to aid in world development. While they are lofty goals, we certainly should use science to benefit man and his world.

Was the discovery of fire and the wheel sheer dumb luck? Or, did science come into play? We won’t debate this question. However, clearly science has benefitted mankind and society for thousands of years. It leads to the discovery of life-saving medicines like the polio vaccine and penicillin.  It creates useful products like our televisions and cellphones. We use scientific discoveries to drive to the grocery store and to blast off to the moon.

Scientific research and discovery come along at an ever-increasing rate. Scientific breakthroughs lead to tomorrow’s technology. The technology in turn leads to all kinds of new products. It obsoletes yesterday’s similar and more limited products. And, without a doubt, over time the new technology becomes more and more complex. It is getting harder and harder to understand the advanced scientific discoveries. It takes a scientific mind and degree to comprehend how and why it works. Many of us only know that a product does indeed work, Yet, we don’t understand the basics behind it.

Today’s scientific study and discoveries are tomorrow’s technology. This holiday was created to encourage us to better understand the science behind it all. Each year, UNESCO publishes a new theme for the year.

How to Celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development

Without going back to your high school science classes, there are fun and easy ways to celebrate World Science Day. So, here are some ideas:

  • Companies, organizations, and governments are encouraged to develop educational programs centered around the theme for the year.
  • Primary and High School teachers are encouraged to create classroom science projects.
  • Run a scientific project of your own during today. You never know, you might become an inventor.
  • Research the science behind some of the products you use.
  • Consider a career in a scientific field or in research.
  • Subscribe to a science magazine.
  • Donate to a non-profit scientific organization.

About Pumpkin Toss Day

When is Pumpkin Toss Day? This holiday is always observed on November 3

A few days before Halloween, you lovingly carved out pumpkin faces. After that, you placed the Jack ‘O Lanterns on your front porch and lit a candle inside on Halloween night. Then, they glowed with pride! However, a few days after Halloween they are now coated with black mold on the inside. And the Jack O’ Lantern’s face is sagging a little more each day. Sadly it’s time for them to go. Pumpkin Toss Day comes along at just the right time. On this November 3 holiday, we toss them out before they turn into smelly mush on the porch.

The primary objective of this holiday is to toss carved pumpkins, as they are quickly rotting on your front porch. You can also toss uncarved pumpkins, too. However, they are an important part of the Thanksgiving scene. So, why not keep some uncarved pumpkins to decorate the inside of your home and your yard? Afterwards, you can toss them on the day after Thanksgiving. Then, the Christmas holiday decorations go up and take center stage for the rest of the year.

On this holiday, you are encouraged to find ways to play with them one last time. We offer some ideas in the next section below. Then, it’s time to say goodbye. If at all possible, avoid sending them to the waste stream. Rather, look for ways to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Pumpkins are eco-friendly.

How to Celebrate Pumpkin Toss Day

We encourage you to celebrate and enjoy Pumpkin Toss Day. Use this holiday as one more opportunity to play with pumpkins before you dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Then, when you are done, so is the Jack O’ Lantern.

Here are some ideas:

  • Put a candle inside and light it up one more time.
  • Feed the deer. Simply, place them where the deer will find them. If they come through your backyard, place them there. Then, watch as the deer chow down!
  • Hold a Pumpkin Toss party. Literally toss them. Give a prize to the person who tosses them the farthest.
  • Place them into a composter to feed your garden plants.
  • Let them rot in your garden.
  • If you do not have a garden, give them to a friend who does.
  • Donate healthy, uncut and unblemished pumpkins to your local zoo. Elephants, rhinos, and hippos are among the animals who eat them.
  • Take them to your town’s recycling center.
  • Use uncarved, healthy pumpkins in a recipe.  Find Pumpkin Recipes.

History and Origin of Pumpkin Toss Day

Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of Holiday Insights, created this holiday in 2025. The main goal of this holiday is to toss away Halloween pumpkins before they rot into a smelly mess. According to Matthews, the objective of this holiday is to have fun with pumpkins one more time as we toss them out. He discourages tossing them in the trash can. Rather, find ways to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way.

Matthews chose the date of November 3 for this holiday because just a few days after Halloween carved pumpkins are already showing major signs of decay.

This holiday is similar to, yet different from Pumpkin Destruction Day, which is celebrated later in the month. That holiday is a little-known event. Matthews goes on to say that a carved pumpkin would be mush by the time this holiday comes along.

Finally, Matthews said the ultimate destination for pumpkins should be back into the environment. They are environmentally clean. If possible, they should never go into the waste stream.

Love Your Freckles Day

Love Your Freckles Day, Solar Lentigines

About Love Your Freckles Day

When is Love Your Freckles Day? This holiday is always observed on November 22

Today is the day those fortunate enough to have freckles happily look forward to. It’s Love Your Freckles Day. On this November 22 holiday, some of us get to show off those cute little spots. Meanwhile, the rest of us with clear skin can only look at freckled folk with envy. Oddly, this holiday is in colder weather when they have faded from people with summer freckles or solar lentigines. Freckles are those cute little sun-kissed spots on your face, legs, or arms. The spots are shades of brown, tan, or red.

The dermatological name is “ephides”. Members of every ethnic group from anywhere in the world can have them. From a genetic standpoint, people who have the MC1R gene, or the VCI92 variant can have them. It appears most often on people who are light-skinned or have red hair.

It is important to note that they are not skin defects, and they are not harmful in any way. Although throughout much of history, people looked upon them as unsightly and unfavorable. During Medieval times, people with freckles were persecuted and accused of witchcraft. As recently as the 1920s, they were undesirable. Skincare companies made products specifically to hide them or make them fade. People with freckles hid them behind heavy layers of makeup. They also used various methods to remove them through surgery, chemical treatments, and more recently laser procedures.

My how times change. Nowadays freckles are “in”. People who have them wear them with pride. They are described as cute and youthful. Will this be just a passing fad? We think not, as people who have are beautiful people.

Did You Know? The word comes from the Scandinavian word “freken”.

Summer Freckles

Perhaps you have “summer freckles” or “sun freckles”. Sunlight can bring them out on the exposed skin of people who otherwise have clear skin. They appear most frequently on the face, back and arms. However, they may show up on the legs or any other part of your body. Formally called solar lentigines, it is temporary and goes away in the fall when you’re indoors your tan fades away.

While they are considered more fashionable than in the past, some people prefer to avoid them.  There are two ways to avoid summer freckles. The first way is to stay out of the sun. The second way is to slather on a high-SPF sunscreen.

Freckles Trivia

What do you know about Freckles? Here are some interesting factoids:

  • They are harmless.
  • Freckles are caused by genetics.
  • They are a natural sunscreen. They darken under the sun, to protect your skin.
  • If you have the MC1R gene, you are likely to have them.
  • While there is no exact count, it is estimated that 4-15% of the world’s population have freckles.
  • Not all redheads have them.
  • They are not a sign of cancer.
  • Freckles are shades of brown, tan, or red.
  • People with red hair and light skin are more likely to have red freckles.
  • They can be lightened with chemical treatment, laser treatment, and other methods.
  • People with them were once persecuted and accused of witchcraft.
  • In the Victorian era in England, carboxylic acid was used to attempt to remove. It caused burns.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Love Your Freckles Day

Here are some other ways of celebrate and enjoy Love Your Freckles Day:

  • If you have them, show them off.
  • Wear clothing that exposes them for others to see.
  • Post pictures of your freckles on social media.
  • Have a freckles party.
  • If you live in a warm, sunny climate, go out into the sunshine and let those solar lentigines shine through.

Today's Quotes

“I had so many freckles that my mother used to say that they were kisses from the angels. I’ve still got them.” – – Lara Flynn Boyle

“I really believe in less is more in terms of makeup. Additionally, I try not to wear too much foundation. I like to see my skin coming through. I like to see my freckles. And I just think that’s the most youthful look.”- – Michelle Monaghan.

“I love the texture of my skin and I love my freckles and even if my nose gets a little red, I don’t mind so much.”- Camille Rowe

History and Origin of Love Your Freckles Day

We did not find any information about the origin of this special day, when it began, or who originated it. The oldest article we found about this holiday was in 2020. We found countless older articles on the topic of freckles, solar lentigines, and famous people who had them. But, none of the older articles referenced this holiday.

For some strange reason, the creator of this November 22 picked a day in cold weather, when our freckles are covered up on long shirts, sweaters, and pants. It would seem to us that a summer day is more appropriate so our fine-freckled friends could display them with pride. And, people who get temprary summer freckles could get in on the fun, too.

This Day in History

Besides Love Your Freckles Day, here are some things that happened on this day:

  • The first snowmobile patent is issued to Carl Eliason of Sayner, WI. (1927)
  • President John F. Kennedy, the youngest person to become a U.S. president, is assassinated in Dallas, Texas as his motorcade traveled through the city. (1959)
  • Actress Jamie Lee Curtis was born on this day in 1958.

Plan Your Epitaph Day

Tombstone with Epitaph

About Plan Your Epitaph Day

When is Plan Your Epitaph Day? This holiday is always celebrated on November 2

Plan Your Epitaph Day is a little bit morbid for my liking. My first thought was who would create this November 2 holiday? And, why? I don’t want to think about my epitaph, let alone ponder what to inscribe on my tombstone.

However………….

When you stop to think about it, maybe it’s best if you consider what legacy you want to inscribe on your tombstone. After all, you never know what a relative or friend may put on your tombstone once you’re gone. Or, worse still, what if they don’t say anything?

While we’re young, we think this is a long way away. However, as the years go by and we gain wisdom, more of us consider getting directly involved with our epitaph, as well as all of the details of our demise. So, think about the inscription you want on your tombstone. Then, let the people who will manage your final arrangements know.

So, if you need a little nudge to plan your epitaph, let today be the day.

How to Celebrate Plan Your Epitaph Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this gruesome holiday:

  • Ponder the inscription you want on your tombstone.
  • Pre-arrange your tombstone and the cemetery.
  • Or, put it off until another time as it’s too morbid to think about.

Believe it or not, there is an occasional reference to this being a “National” day. It’s hard to believe that the U.S. Congress or the president would waste time considering a proclamation on this topic. We did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

You're Welcome Day

Planet Earth When is Earth Day? Sun-earth day.

About You're Welcome Day

When is You're Welcome Day? This holiday is the day after Thanksgiving

You’re Welcome Day encourages us to simply say “You’re welcome”. The objective of this special day is to put manners back into society. While we should say thank you every day, there is some confusion as to when is You’re Welcome Day. Read on…

This very special day comes the day after Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Day, we say “Thanks” for what we have.  So, it only seems natural, that “You’re Welcome” immediately follows a thank you.

Are you enjoying this special day? If so, you’re welcome!

Determining the Proper Date for You're Welcome Day

A couple of years after this holiday was created, we began to see a variety of dates posted for this holiday. In a follow-up study, we surfed through countless sites. We found that this day is referenced as occurring on either November 23, 24, 25, 28, or 29.  We also discovered that most sites that also noted the year, had it occurring the day after Thanksgiving. Recognizing that the single reference to the meaning and content of this day had it noted on the day after Thanksgiving, one can only conclude that this is the correct day of celebration.

In our experience, this is a classic case of individuals and websites copying a date for a special day, without understanding that it may not occur on the same date every year. Keeping the dates correct takes a lot of effort and research.

How to Celebrate You're Welcome Day

Participating in this day can happen anywhere that you are, and anywhere that you go today.

  • Just speak a profusion of “thank you’s” for even the slightest of reasons.
  • When you say thank you, make sure to be sincere. It will go a long way.

Thought for Today

The average American, over the course of his life, spends 6 months waiting at red lights.

History and Origin of You're Welcome Day

Despite extensive research efforts, we have not yet found much information about this holiday. In essence, this special day most likely originated on a blog in 2002. The blog was posted on blogs.salon.com, declaring that day after Thanksgiving as You’re Welcome Day. Unfortunately, the creator did not identify themselves.

It’s amazing how something as simple as a blog post can result in the creation of a new holiday.
