When is National Bald Eagle Day

About American Bald Eagle Day

When is American Bald Eagle Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 20

American Bald Eagle Day is today, a June 20 holiday. Also called National Eagle Day, we celebrate the national bird of the United States of America. As our national bird, it symbolizes freedom, strength, honesty, wisdom, and power.

On this day in 1782, U.S. Congress declared the Bald Eagle our national bird. It is an important national symbol. On this day, it was added to the official seal of the United States. The bald eagle is portrayed holding 13 arrows in its left talon, symbolizing the original 13 colonies. In its right talon, it holds an olive branch, a symbol of peace.

Did You Know? Our national bird almost became the turkey. The virtues of the two birds were hotly debated by Congress, before selecting the Bald Eagle as our national bird. Can you imagine eating bald eagles instead of turkey on Thanksgiving!?

An important distinction: National Bald Eagle Day is defined as a national “observance”, rather than a holiday. As a result, government offices, banks, and businesses are open on this day.

Bald Eagle Trivia

Here are some interesting and inciteful bald eagle trivia facts that you cant share with your family and friends:

  • They are not bald. Rather, the feathers on its head and tail are white.
  • There are an estimated 50,000 birds in the lower United States (2021).
  • Bald eagles are native to North America.
  • Juveniles do not have white heads.
  • Once almost extinct, efforts to save them succeeded. They are no long on the Endangered Species List. As a result, they are sometimes mistaken for golden eagles (see picture above).
  • They are sometimes confused with turkey vultures. If they fly in a “V” it’s a vulture, if their wings soar flat, it’s an eagle!
  • Their lifespan is 25-40 years.
  • Females are larger than males.
  • Their diet consists largely of fish, birds, small mammals, reptiles, and carrion. As a result, you will often find them making their nest near small lakes, ponds and wetlands.

How to Celebrate American Bald Eagle Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate Bald Eagle Day:

  • Learning more about our national bird.
  • Go to a zoo that has a bald eagle
  • Flying the flag. While the flag itself does not portray a bald eagle, the top of the flag pole is usually adorned with a bald eagle. (perhaps you never noticed!)
  • Look for them in your area. Don’t forget your camera. We suggest a camera with a telephoto lens.

History and Origin of American Bald Eagle Day

On January 28, 1982, then-President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation in accordance with a joint resolution of Congress (S.J. Res 121) declaring June 20, 1982, to be National Bald Eagle Day

In 1995, then president William Clinton proclaimed June 20, 1995, as American Eagle Day.

While neither of these presidential proclamations made the observance an annual event, the American public celebrates his holiday annually. After all, it is our national bird. This is a true tribute to the honor and respect we have for our stately and majestic national bird.

Flip Flop Day

About National Flip Flop Day

When is National Flip Flop Day? Since 2023, This holiday is celebrated on the Friday after Memorial Day. This is a recent date change.

Summer is here. Okay, it technically arrives in a couple of days. This is the perfect day to celebrate National Flip Flop Day. It’s time to bare our toes to the sun. Ditch those sweaty, hard leather shoes, and even your comfortable sneakers, and slip into your flip flops. Wearing them is as much a summer tradition, as baseball, hot dogs, and going to the beach.

Speaking of the beach, where would you be without your flip flops? Leather shoes and sneakers just won’t do when strolling on the beach, ankle-deep in the surf. Easy to slip on and off, flip flops protect your feet from the blazing hot sand, as you walk across the beach in search of the perfect sunbathing spot with the gentle breeze.

Flip flops are a form of sandals. Ancient Egyptians wore sandals as far back as 4,000 B.C. So, we’ve been wearing this comfortable footwear for quite a while. Flip flops are simple and inexpensive, so much so, that many of us have several pairs. This is also a term of speech. For example, politicians are often known to “flip flop” on the issues, swayed into voting yea or nay, depending upon the voice of their constituents.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe, the creator of this day, holds a fundraiser on today for Camp Sunshine. For many years, customers who come into their cafe received a free Sunshine Smoothie. Customers are encouraged to donate to Camp Sunshine. This popular promotion was canceled during COVID. The company informed us they are no longer doing this promotion.

Flip Flop Trivia

Here’s some flip flop trivia to ponder as you walk across a sunny beach:

  • Flip flops are made from a wide variety of materials, including rubber, vinyl, foam, cork, plastic, and polyurethane.
  • Originally, they were made of natural materials, including leather, palm leaves, papyrus, and animal hides.
  • There are several varieties. Thong varieties and slip-ons are the most popular. There are also platform, wedge, and decorative/designer styles. Brazil is considered the Flip Flop Capital of the World. In Brazil, they are called “Chinelos”.
  • Brazil owns the Guinness World Book record for the largest flip flop ever made. Created in 2019, it measured 30 feet long and weighed 4,700 pounds.

How to Celebrate National Flip Flop Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate National Flip Flop Day:

  • Participating in this special summer holiday is easy. Wear your flip flops! But, don’t forget the real reason behind this day, and donate to Camp Sunshine near you.
  • Wear them all day everywhere you go.
  • Buy a couple of new pairs. They are inexpensive, so don’t buy just one.
  • Give a new pair to someone as a gift.
  • Make a fashion statement. Wear them as mismatched pairs.

History and Origin of National Flip Flop Day

This special day was created in 2007 by Tropical Smoothie Cafe to celebrate its 10th anniversary. They use it as an annual fundraiser for Camp Sunshine.

In 2023, the Tropical Smoothie Cafe changed the date of this holiday from the third Friday in June to the Friday after Memorial Day.

There is no presidential proclamation, nor any documentation from the U.S. Congress, to support this as a true U.S. “National” day. The creators make no mention on their website, of any efforts to obtain official “National” status.

National Weed Your Garden Day

Crabgrass Weed Plants

About National Weed Your Garden Day

When is National Weed Your Garden Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 13

Today is Weed Your Garden Day. Most likely, you are already spending copious amounts of time attacking the weeds in our gardens. However, if there is so much as a single unwanted plant out in your garden, use this June 13 holiday to pluck it.

Left unchecked, weeds quickly choke out many garden flowers and vegetables. At the very least, the competition they give for sunlight, water, and nutrients causes your plants to be less productive. The purpose of this special day is to spend an extra 5-10 minutes weeding your garden. When I found out about this goal, I just laughed! An extra five or ten minutes would barely put a dent in a garden my size. But, ‘ya never know, this might be just the incentive some garden procrastinators need, to get out and pull the weeds.

Are you ready to participate in this special day!? Then, go out to your garden and start pulling those pesky weeds. By definition, a weed is any plant that is unwanted in your garden. This definition includes plants that are otherwise edible, serve medicinal purposes, and those that produce flowers. Some examples of edible weeds are Dandelions and Purslane. We all know that milkweed has medicinal benefits. But, we do not want them in the garden. And, then there are many colorful wildflowers that make their way into our vegetable gardens, where they are considered weeds.

Why is it that weeds grow more prolific than our garden flowers and vegetables? Right now, our gardens have been planted for a long enough time, that weeds are growing thickly and rapidly. Weeding is a daily chore. After you complete your weeding, lay down a thick layer of mulch, to suppress the growth of new seeds.

Definition of a Weed

A weed is any plant not in a place where you want it to be. Even edible, medicinal, herbal plants, and even flowers, are weeds if you don’t want them where they pop up. Dandelions are a perfect example. In the lawn, dandelions are weeds. Dandelions are edible. Use them in salads and for dandelion wine.

For example:

  • Flowers can make their way into your vegetable garden where you pull them out, like any other weed.
  • Even a common flower, vegetable, or herb would be considered a weed, in the cracks of your driveway or sidewalk.
  • Only a child considers dandelions in the lawn, to be anything other than a weed.
  • I do not know a single person who likes ragweed in any way, shape, or form.
  • Queen Anne’s Lace is a popular flower in English gardens. In the USA however, it is considered an invasive weed.
  • Has anyone found a use for Tumbleweed?

Now, consider the reverse…..

  • Imagine you are lost in the woods for days with no food or water. You come upon purslane, an otherwise common and pesky weed in the vegetable garden. This leafy, nutritious green is quite edible and may help to save your life.
  • If you love your salad greens, then the tender inner leaves of dandelion plants belong in your fresh garden salad. It does not belong in your lawn. It may belong in your garden as a salad green.
  • Dandelions are certainly not a weed if you are a vintner and want to make dandelion wine.
  • Weeds offer food and shelter to birds and wildlife.
  • Many weeds produce an attractive flower.
  • Some weeds offer actual or potential medicinal value. Imagine if an obnoxious weed in your flower garden is someday identified as a cure for cancer or the common cold.

How to Celebrate National Weed Your Garden Day

It is very easy to celebrate this holiday:

  • Go out to the garden and spend time removing weeds.
  • If you have edible weeds, don’t send them to the composter. Rather, make a meal of them.
  • Consider using a thick layer of mulch or compost around your plants to minimize weeds. All about mulch.

Weeding Tip: Soak the soil before weeding. It will be easier to pull the roots out.

Today's Quote

“Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.” – – A. A. Milne

History and Origin of National Weed Your Garden Day

Our research has yet to discover the creator of this special day, or why it was created. This is surprising, as this is a new holiday.

The earliest reference to this special day only dates to around 2015.

Like so many recent holidays, the title calls it a “National” day. However, we found no documentation supporting this to be a formal “National” day, which requires a presidential proclamation, or an act of Congress. We did not find any official government recognition of this day.

Meteor Watch Day

Asteroid Meteor Watch Day, June 30 Holidays

About Meteor Watch Day

When is Meteor Watch Day? This holiday is always observed on June 30

We sure hope that the weather in your area calls for clear, moonless skies tonight. Today is Meteor Watch Day, a June 30 holiday. The warm June nights are a perfect time to look to the skies for meteor showers. Will you be lucky enough to see meteors streaking across the night sky? We sure hope so.

Also called “Shooting Stars” or “Falling Stars”, meteors are space dust and ice that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Meteors can be as small as a speck of dust. As they enter the atmosphere at high speeds, they burn up, producing light as they streak across the night sky while tumbling towards the earth. Sometimes, you see them streak across the sky and disappear at the horizon. Other times, they end suddenly, burning out right before your eyes.

Seeing a shooting star is a sign of good luck. With a little luck, you can see a meteor on just about any night of the year. But, the best time to see meteors is during a meteor shower. There are several meteor showers each year. The best annual show is the Perseid Meteor shower each August.

Asteroids Versus Meteors

The terms Asteroid, Meteor, and Meteorite are often confusing. Here are the definitions:

Asteroids are objects in space that orbit the sun. They are of any size in space. They are sometimes called “space rocks”. It’s the big ones that we worry may potentially hit the earth and cause catastrophic damage.

Meteors are asteroids that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the earth’s atmosphere, putting on a light display as they streak across the sky.

Meteorites are small meteors, sometimes as small as a grain of sand. A meteor that survives the atmosphere to hit the earth’s surface is called a meteorite.

Comets – consist mostly of ice and dust. It orbits the sun or comes from the outer reaches of the solar system. They develop a tail as they near the sun and the sun heats them up.

How to Celebrate Meteor Watch Day

  • Head outdoors on a clear June night. Look up at the sky and watch for meteors.
  • Learn more about meteors that struck the earth. You will be amazed at the danger they can do.
  • If your camera has a night setting, bring it along. If you’re really lucky, you might capture a picture of a meteor as it tumbles toward the earth.

History and Origin of Meteor Watch Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Perhaps, it was a stargazer too captivated by the mystical beauty of the heavens to bother with the trivial task of documenting this holiday.

We do find it odd that Meteor Watch Day is held on a day when there are no known major meteor showers (see major meteor shower events above)

Several site visitors speculate that this day was created on this day to commemorate June 30, 1908, when a meteor explosion in Siberia knocked down trees in a 40-mile radius and struck people unconscious some 40 miles away. We tend to agree with this theory.

This Day in History

Here are some things that happened on this day:

French acrobat Blondin crosses over Niagara Falls on a tightrope.  (1859)

A giant fireball, most likely from an air burst of a large meteoroid or comet flattens 80 million trees near the Stony Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate, Russia. (1908)

Michael Phelps, American Olympic multiple gold medalist in swimming was born on this day in 1985.

About National Splurge Day

When is National Splurge Day? This holiday is always observed on June 18

The key word for today is “binge”. It’s definitely not a day for penny pinchers, anyone on a diet, thrifty people, or Ebenezer Scrooge. Rather, it is a day to celebrate and be a little extravagant. That’s what you do on National Splurge Day, oh Yeah! On this June 18 holiday, open the purse strings, eat to excess and have some fun.

There are certain dates on the calendar that you look forward to with great excitement. You mark the date and wait in eager anticipation. For me, National Splurge Day is one of those very special days.

National Splurge Day is a day to treat yourself excessively, to anything you want. Do it in style, let there be no limits today. Isn’t that a great thing? Go out and buy that boat you’ve always dreamed of, go to the spa and get the deluxe treatment, or buy that pricey new outfit you’ve wanted. Maybe, you’re on a diet, and that special dessert has too many calories. Maybe, you want to buy a steak, and the budget is a little tight. Have a little extra of your favorite ice cream, splurge a little and go out to a fancy restaurant for dinner. The options are endless. Toss out your reservations about spending over your budget and go for it today.

How to Celebrate National Splurge Day

  • Celebrate this day to the fullest degree. Treat yourself to whatever you want and to excess.
  • Have that extra scoop of ice cream.
  • Eat as much candy as you want. Add some extra hot fudge, too.
  • Forget about your budget for just one day. For, this is indeed a day to splurge. Do so without worry or concern…until tomorrow.
  • Take the day off of work and binge-watch your favorite television program.

To keep in the spirit of the day, you may not want to balance your checkbook or step on a scale until tomorrow.

Whatever you do, it is not a day to be a miser.

About National Cheese Day

When is National Cheese Day? This holiday is always observed on June 4

Today is National Cheese Day, a June 4 holiday. From breakfast to late-night snacks, this is a day to enjoy ample amounts of a wide variety of cheeses.

People around the world love cheese. Americans consume on average around 31 pounds of cheese a year. We get to choose among a huge variety of flavors and textures.

Cheese is produced from pressed curds of milk. It has been a staple of our diets since ancient times, dating back as far back as 10,000 years ago. By the time of the Roman Empire, cheese had become widespread.

Depending upon who is counting, there are between 800 to 1,400 varieties of cheese to choose from, classified by taste and texture. Unfortunately, many of these varieties are little known and hard to find. Even so, there is no shortage of varieties in the market. The flavor and texture of cheeses are influenced by temperature, the aging process, and spices.

Did You Know? Cheese can be made from the milk of cows, goats, sheep, and even buffalos.

It is a sheer pleasure to celebrate National Cheese Day. Eat lots of cheese. From grilled cheese sandwiches to cheese soup and cheesecake, from American cheese to Brie, there’s no shortage of cheese varieties and recipes. Holding a Cheese Tasting party is a great way to celebrate National Cheese Day. Ps. Don’t forget to pair it with some great wines!

Today’s Slogan: Ban pre-shredded cheese. Make America grate again.

Cheese Trivia

  • Cheese is more flavorful at room temperature.
  • Americans consume over 31 pounds of cheese per year. But, that’s nothing. But that’s nothing compared to the French, who eat over 50 pounds of cheese per year.
  • Historical records vary, as to when cheese was first made. It was somewhere between 7,500 and 8,000 B.C. Records suggest it may have first been discovered, by accident, in Poland or Arabia.
  • The world’s largest cheese was put on display on this day in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair. It weighed over 34,000 pounds.

How to Celebrate National Cheese Day

  • Eat cheese, lots of it.
  • Take up the challenge. Have cheese with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and for a snack today.
  • Try it sprinkling it on at least one item you’ve never used it on before.
  • Hold a cheese-tasting party.
  • Have a contest with friends to name as many different kinds of cheese as you can.
  • Have a variety that you have never tried.
