About World Social Media Day

When is World Social Media Day? This holiday is always observed on June 30

Let’s be sociable! With the arrival of the internet, it’s become easy to communicate our lives, our feelings, and our beliefs. We post countless pictures and texts. Today is World Social Media Day. On this June 30 holiday, we celebrate the invention of this great interactive tool that has changed our lives and the way we communicate with the world. What better way to celebrate than to go on our cell phones and access our favorite social media platforms.

It’s in our DNA to be sociable. We humans are generally friendly and communicate with one another. And today, thanks to the internet and its many social channels, it has never been easier to keep in touch. We share our lives with others in what we post online. It regularly absorbs many enjoyable hours of our time.

Social media can be good. And sometimes, it is a bad thing. It’s great to transmit and share news and information. Social platforms on the internet allow us to get our message across, loudly, clearly, and instantaneously. We openly share to the world our thoughts and feelings in words, pictures, and video. We express our beliefs, too. Unfortunately, our communications are unfiltered and that can be good or bad. And, the proliferation of fake news is an immense problem on social media platforms. So, we have to take the good with the bad, and appreciate the good features and benefits it offers us.

The Evolution of Communications and Social Media

As mentioned previously, we are social creatures. Our first communications were charcoal writings on cave walls. As time passed, man began to communicate with etchings on stone tablets. Leap forward a few thousand years, and our ancestors discovered how to make crude paper out of papyrus leaves. Communications and recording of historical events were printed on the papyrus sheets.

Leap forward another few thousand years, and we find much better quality paper going through printing presses. This allowed us to communicate to a much broader population. And, we put pen to paper. On it, we wrote love letters, business correspondence, and expressed our views. Copiers were invented, and our social interactions grew in leaps and bounds.

Then, one day not so long ago, the Internet was invented. At first the internet was used by businesses, scientists, and other organizations. Then, in the blink of an eye, we all became connected to the “Net”. As billions of us found more and more uses for the Internet, it became evident, that it was not just a source of information. Rather, we came to realize that we could use it to communicate to one or two people, or to the whole world. With this realization, social media was born, and many social platforms were created to meet our various needs.

Today's Quotes

“Social media is reducing social barriers. It connects people on the strength of human values, not identities.” – – Narendra Modi

“Social media is an amazing tool, but it’s really the face-to-face interaction that makes a long-term impact.” – – Felicia Day

“Social media is something of a double-edged sword. At its best, it offers unprecedented opportunities for marginalized people to speak and bring much needed attention to the issues they face. At its worst, social media also offers ‘everyone’ an unprecedented opportunity to share in collective outrage without reflection.” – – Roxane Gay

History and Origin of Social Media Day

On June 30, 2010 World Social Media Day was born. Mashable created this annual holiday to celebrate the evolution and growth of what we fondly refer to as social media. The term “social media” defines the many platforms we use today to communicate on the internet. However, social media in its broader definition, is any vehicle we use to communicate person to person.

It wasn’t all that long ago when we communicated with each other over the phone and by writing a letter with pen and paper. When is the last time you wrote and mailed a letter to someone? Now, we post it for all the world to see on our favorite of many internet social media platforms. Often, we post the same thing on multiple social platforms.
