When is Make Your Own Sundae Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 11
We’re entering the hottest days of summer. We look to cool off in many ways. The pool or the beach is tops on our list. But, right behind in popularity is consuming copious amounts of ice cream. (We’ll all go on a diet after summer is over) As a result, it’s only fitting that we celebrate more than a few ice cream holidays in July and August. Today we celebrate Make You Own Sundae Day, a July 11 holiday.
Importantly, we don’t just eat ice cream sundaes today. Rather, we express our creativity as we make our own, with a wide selection of toppings. After all, it’s the toppings that makes the sundae.
How to Celebrate and Participate in Make Your Own Sundae Day
According to the creators of this special holiday, this is a day to show off your skill in making a creative sundae. We suggest you make a contest of it. Here’s how:
Get together with family or friends. Have an ice cream sundae party.
Provide the following items:
Vanilla and chocolate ice cream
Several popular toppings – nuts, marshmallows, m&ms, crushed oreo cookies, etc.
Some fruits – cherries, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries
Sauces – fudge, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup
Whipped cream
Bowls, spoons and napkins
Place all of the above items on a table. Let each person make their own, adding whatever topping they desire. Encourage creative and artistic sundaes. You could even create prizes for the most unique or most creative.
Chow down and enjoy!
The History of Ice Cream Sundaes
The roots of ice cream sundaes go back to the late 1800s and the Sunday Blue Laws, among which said stores could not sell alcohol and alcohol-related products on Sunday. Among the items that could not be sold on Sunday was soda. At the time, ice cream sodas were very popular. As a result, ice cream vendors came up with alternatives. This led to the creation of the ice cream sundae. In turn, this led to controversy as to who was the first to create the ice cream sundae. At least three gentlemen claimed to play a role in the creation of ice cream sundaes. They are:
Edward Berner of Riverside, Wi. He was the first known to create sundaes. In 1881, Berner’s customer George Hallauer was unable to have an ice cream soda on a Sunday. So, he asked Berner to put chocolate sauce on top of some vanilla ice cream. How much did it cost? A nickel.
In 1890, a customer asked druggist Mr. Sonnetag to put some chocolate sauce on his ice cream. He named it Sonnetag, which is German for “Sunday”.
On April 3, 1892, Minister John M. Scott and Chester Platt, a pharmacy co-owner created a sundae in Ithaca, NY. Platt covered the ice cream with cherry syrup and candied cherries. He named it “Cherry Sunday”.

Neither the U.S. Congress nor any President of the United States has proclaimed today to be National Make Your Own Sundae Day.

When is National Macaroni and Cheese Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 14
National Macaroni and Cheese Day, also called National Mac and Cheese Day, is upon us. Doesn’t that give you a warm feeling all over? This July 14 holiday brings back fond memories of childhood, as mac and cheese has always been a childhood favorite. It’s inexpensive, easy to make, tastes good, and kids love it. Now, that’s a winning combination!
The popularity of mac and cheese has had a resurgence in recent years among adults. Macaroni and cheese has popped up on restaurant menus, each with its own little twist. Food truck rodeos are not complete without at least one food truck listing mac and cheese on their menu. New recipe books, are all but certain to have at least one macaroni and cheese recipe. We’ve become creative, too. Along with traditional macaroni and cheese, almost any combination of cheeses are now used. Also, you can get smoked macaroni and cheese, fried mac and cheese, and a seemingly endless list of ingredients and ways to cook it.
Macaroni and cheese has been in the recipe books for centuries. It is believed to have originated in Italy in the 14th century. The first recording of a recipe was in the 14th-century English cookbook “Forme and Cury”. Thomas Jefferson brought the recipe to America in the late 1700s. Nowadays, we commonly associate macaroni and cheese with Kraft Foods, who has offered it commercially since 1937. While many other companies, offer it, Kraft Foods Mac and Cheese is by far the most popular.
Did You Know? In 1993, Crayola Corporation named a crayon “Macaroni and Cheese”. Whether you’re eating at home or going out to dinner tonight, make sure to have macaroni and cheese!
How to Celebrate National Macaroni and Cheese Day
There are many things you can do to celebrate National Macaroni and Cheese Day. Here are a few ideas:

When is National Lollipop Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 20
People of all ages love lollipops, or suckers as they are commonly called. National Lollipop Day is today. This July 20 holiday is a day to enjoy candy on a stick as we celebrate and enjoy the creation of Lollipops. Could you imagine how sheltered our childhood, and perhaps adulthood, would be if the suckers had never been invented!? It sure would be a duller, and less tasteful world.
Select your favorite sucker flavor and then lick and suck on it all day. Speaking of flavors, the traditional cherry, orange, lemon, and lime are now joined with dozens of new and sometimes unique flavors. Different candy manufacturers rate the popularity of the flavors differently. So, it’s hard to identify which flavor is the most popular. Cherry is my personal favorite. So, I’ll go out on a limb and say cherry is the most popular lollipop flavor.
Play the Lollipop Game: Drill holes into a thick, flat board. Paint the bottom portion of a couple of lollipop sticks. Stick the lollipops at random, into the holes in the board. Each player gets to select a lollipop. If they pull the one with the painted stick, they win a prize!
For the Record: On July 18, 2012, See’s Candy Company in Burlingame, CA made the world’s largest lollipop. The chocolate lollipop was almost 5 feet tall and weighed over 7,000 pounds.
How to Celebrate National Lollipop Day
It’s always fun to participate in food holidays. Here are a few ways to enjoy National Lollipop Day:
Lick suckers all day long.
Buy some and set them on a plate at home. They will disappear fast.
Bring some to work to share with co-workers.
Give them out as behavioral awards in the classroom and in the workspace.
Hand them out to customers.
Whatever you do, do not set them down in the sand, or drop them anywhere.

History and Origin of National Lollipop Day
George Smith, the owner of Bradley Smith Company, invented and patented the Lollipop in 1908. Legend has it, that George named the Lollipop after his favorite racehorse ” Lolly Pop”.
The Racine Confectioner’s Machinery Company claims to have created National Lollipop Day.
There is a little controversy as to who first created the automated Lollipop machine. The Racine Confectioner’s Machinery Company claims to be the first to create a machine to automatically make Lollipops. Their machine made 40 lollipops at a time. Sam Born of California also claims to have created the first automated lollipop machine, in 1916. It was called the “Born Sucker Machine”.
We found no congressional record, nor presidential proclamation, which is required to make this a “national” day. If you’d like this to become a true “National” day, contact your congressperson. He or she will lick their lips at the prospect of making suckers a national day.

When is Kissing Day? International Kissing Day is July 6. National Kissing Day is June 19
Ahhh, isn’t a kiss intimately special? It is so special that we get two holidays to enjoy it. You can choose to participate in International Kissing Day or National Kissing Day. As for me and my sweetie, we will enjoy both days to the fullest extent possible. The objective of this very special day is to appreciate and enjoy a kiss. So, go ahead and swap some spit today. Pucker up and give out a big, juicy one with a loud “smack” to anyone and everyone.
Kissing originated thousands, and perhaps millions of years ago. It is believed to have originated from mouth-to-mouth feeding of parents to a child. My, it certainly has evolved over the centuries. But, why is that? The answer is simply because it makes us feel good.
There are all manners of kissing. You can be so happy with someone that “I could kiss you”. And, then you do. You can smooch on the couch. Teenagers enjoy necking parking in a car or other private places. In a similar manner, you can “Suck Face” almost anywhere when you are alone. You can be “making out” almost anywhere.
People are not the only creatures to smooch. Apes, cats, dogs, and dolphins, are among the animals that share a kiss or two.
Did You Know? Okay, you may not want to know this juicy tidbit. Kissing can transmit 80 million microbes of bacteria.
The World Record Longest Kiss: Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarathold from Thailand hold this envious record at 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds. How would you like to beat that!?
Types of Kisses
There are all types of kisses. Which type you choose to bestow upon someone depends on the relationship that person is with you and the situation. Here are a few of them:
The peck on the cheek is for greeting people like parents, grandparents, relatives, and a few good friends.
The full-on-the-mouth kiss is passionate and primarily for lovers. The length is important. The longer, the better. Parents sometimes give a quick kiss to infants on the mouth, too.
The French Kiss is the favorite among lovers. It is usually reserved for romantic situations and in private.
The “Air Kiss” is often used in greetings at public events among casual acquaintances. A non-contact kiss is given to both cheeks, often accompanied by a “mwah” sound.
A peck on both cheeks is another form of social greeting. It is similar to the air kiss but actually makes contact with the cheek. It is often accompanied by the “mwah” sound. It differs from the peck on the cheek, which is on one cheek.
How to Celebrate and Participate in Kissing Day
This is one of the most enjoyable holidays of all. I’m sure you can think of many ways to participate in this day. Here are a few suggestions:
Pucker up and plant a big one on people you see today.
Have a contest. See how many you can give/receive.
Neck or smooch with that special someone. Then, see where it leads.
Don’t be shy. If you are anticipating that first kiss with someone, do it today.
Today's Deep Thought
Stealing a kiss requires a partner in crime.

This could be an unforgettable day, Or, it might be a day to forget. It is I Forgot Day, a July 2 holiday. Strangely, today is not a day to remember. So, just what are you forgetting? Can you even remember? Is it important? Hopefully, not.
Some days are days to remember and to cherish all of our lives. Others, like today, are ones to be forgotten. If you are having a bad day, it’s just as well that this day has arrived. We do hope that you are not getting married or having a baby today.
Some people view today as an opportunity to express their regrets for forgetting something, and to make amends. They do so by sending cards and flowers, apologizing for their memory lapse. The trouble is, if you forget something important tomorrow, you have to wait a whole year for the next I Forgot Day to arrive.

If you have a busy lifestyle and are forgetting things, slow down.

When is Gummi Worm Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 15
What are Gummi Worms? Why they are a gross and yucky, yet deliciously sweet and sour chewable gelatin candy. That translates into a wildly popular candy for young children, teens, and even many adults. Never mind that they are loaded with sugar and therefore not good for you. Everyone loves the flavors, along with the squishy, worm-like texture. Therefore, it’s only appropriate that today we get to celebrate Gummi Worm Day. So, enjoy this July 15 holiday with a big handful of icky gummi worms.
Unlike their predecessor, the ever-popular and cute little gummi bears, gummi worms have the “yuck” factor nailed. You can use gummi worms in many ways. You can enjoy them all by themselves. But, the fun is the many creative ways you can put them into desserts and snacks. Just imagine the decorating possibilities. You can partially or fully hide them in pudding, Jell-O, frosting on cakes and muffins, mix them in a fresh fruit salad, and so much more. You are only limited by your imagination. Of course, they are very popular in Halloween treats, too. For Halloween, the grosser the better.
Did You Know? The original name for them in Germany is “Gummi”. In the United States, people translated it to “Gummy”. However, you can spell it any way you prefer. I promise everyone will know exactly what you are referring to.
Gummi Worm and Bear History
We can’t talk about gummi worms without talking about gummi bears. They were created first. In 1920, Hans Riegel of Bonn, Germany began making gummi bears in his kitchen. He first sold them on July 15, 1920. Demand quickly grew and he formed Haribo company, which eventually went on to market them around the world.
American candy manufacturer Trolli created the gummi worm. Gummi Worms hit the market on July 15, 1981. It was intended to be a shock factor to parents. But, that didn’t stop people from absolutely loving them. At its inception, it succeeded for both kids and adults. Trolli company was sold to Kraft Foods in 2004.
Now, there are all sorts of gummi shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. Why, there’s a gummi for everyone!
How to Celebrate and Participate in Gummi Worm Day
We see two opposite ways to celebrate Gummi Worm Day. Here are a few ideas:
Enjoy a handful (or two) of gummi worms.
Put them in a candy dish on your kitchen counter and watch them disappear.
Put some into your family’s evening snack. But, don’t tell them.
“A three-year-old child is a being who gets almost as much fun out of a fifty-six dollar set of swings as it does out of finding a small green worm.” – – Bill Vaughan
History and Origin of Gummi Worm Day
While much is known about gummi bears and worms, we know little about who created this day, why, or when. Based upon our historical research, this holiday first appeared in 2013. We found no reference to who created this day.
This holiday was not created as a “National” day. Some websites now refer to it as National Gummi Worm Day. However, this is not the title we found on the earliest recordings of this day.
Neither the U.S. Congress, nor any President of the United States has proclaimed today to be National Gummi Worm Day.
