National Corn Chip Day

National Corn Chip Dy. January 29 holidays

When is National Corn Chip Day? This holiday is always observed on January 29

National Corn Chip Day is today. It is a January 29 holiday. Fifty years ago, few Americans knew what these crunchy chips were. However,  today most of us cannot imagine life without this tasty, crunchy holder of salsa, cheese, and (mostly) Mexican dips. In addition to using them with dips, these chips are an important ingredient in a wide variety of Tex-Mex recipes. They are also sprinkled atop salads.

On this holiday, enjoy eating one of your favorite snacks. And, take our corn chip challenge. Eat corn chips for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks today! I don’t know about you. But, I will find that easy to do.

Did You Know? Fritos Corn Chips were first marketed in 1961.

Corn Chips Versus Tortilla Chips

Surprisingly, many of us think corn chips and tortilla chips are one and the same. Actually, they are different.  Both of them are made of the same ingredients: cornmeal, salt, and water. The difference is how they are cooked and prepared.

How to Make Corn Chips

  • First, mix cornmeal, salt, and water into a dough.
  • The dough is shaped and pressed through a die, similar to how is made.
  • Then, fry the chips in a heavy skillet.

How to Make Tortilla Chips

  • Cornmeal, salt, and water are mixed into a dough.
  • Next, the dough is made into a round shape.
  • Cook the dough in a skillet or a cast iron pot.
  • Finally, cut it into triangles and then fried.

Corn Chip Trivia

In the 1930s, Fritos becomes the first corn chip to reach the market.

  • Charles Elmer Doolin bought the patent for “Fritos” from a Mexican man for $100.
  • In 1991, Fritos created the current logo. Yet, it wasn’t patented until 2002!
  • Ignacio Anaya, a maitre’d from Piedra Negras, Mexico invented Nachos in 1943.
  • Corn, the main ingredient in corn chips, is gluten-free.
  • Salsa can be traced back to the Aztecs and Mayans.
  • Chips and salsa are the official state snack of Texas.
  • May is National Salsa month.

Chocolate Cake Day

Devil's Food Chocolate Cake Day. When is Chocolate Cake Day? May 19 holiday. January 27

When is Chocolate Cake Day? This holiday is always observed on January 27

Chocolate Cake Day is today. This January 27 holiday is a chocolate lovers delight, and a day to eat cake. Why this a day to “bake your chocolate cake….and eat it, too!” On this day, a white or yellow cake will not do. Nor, will part chocolate, part white suffice. It must be chocolate, all chocolate. You can make milk chocolate, dark chocolate, fudge, or any other type of chocolate. And, there’s only one flavor of frosting that’s acceptable to use today. Of course, you know what flavor to use.

During our original research, in the early 2000s, there were only a few references to this holiday anywhere, online or off. The few references we found were from Ecard and calendar websites. This might lead you to conclude that this is a day for (and by) the Ecard companies. But, we know better. This day is for you, and all of us chocolate lovers to savor and enjoy.

There are three objectives for today: To bake a chocolate cake. To decorate a one. And, to eat a piece or two. Of course, if you are too busy to bake or decorate a cake, then just eating a chocolate cake will certainly do!

Cliché of the Day: You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. Author unknown

For the Diet Conscious: You just might not want to know that there a one slice of chocolate cakes has approximately 250 to 500 calories and 30 to 50 carbs. But, don’t let this keep you from enjoying a slice today.

How to Celebrate Chocolate Cake Day

Food holidays are some of the most delicious holidays of the year. Here are some ways that you can celebrate this tasty holiday:

  • Bake a chocolate cake.
  • Eat a piece (or two).
  • Share your recipe with others.
  • Bake a chocolate cake and bring it to your workplace to share with others. You might be voted “Co-worker of the Day”.
  • Give a cake to someone in need of cheering up.
  • Bring a chocolate cake to a nursing home.
  • Post a picture of your cake on social media.

Today's Quote

“Let them eat cake”. This quote was first attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette.

History and Origin of Chocolate Cake Day

Despite our extensive research efforts in the early 2000s, we did not find the creator or the origin of this holiday. Also, a second search in the early 2020s did not find any information about the origin or creator of this day. Perhaps it was a baker who created it. Or, maybe it was a food company. Most likely, it was a chocolate cake…eater just like you and me!

Prior to 2015, this holiday was universally called Chocolate Cake Day. Then, sometime after 2015, many websites began to add the word “National” to the title of this holiday.  Now, most websites are doing this. However, this change was not made by an unknown creator. Nor is there any congressional bill or presidential proclamation making it a true national day. As a result, we continue to call this holiday Chocolate Cake Day

Definition of “National” Days – Find outwhy it is important to distinguish true national days.

In addition to Chocolate Cake Day, here are some things that happened on this day:

  • The Russians liberate Auschwitz in WWII. (1945)
  • Tragedy strikes the Apollo space program as a fire in the command module kills astronauts Lt. Col. Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White, and Lt. Cdr. Roger Chafee.  (1967)

About Beer Can Appreciation Day

When is Beer Can Appreciation Day? This holiday is always observed on January 24

Now here’s a day that I can really get into! Actually, I can “get into” the stuff inside of the can even more. What this author appreciates is a beer can that is full and icy cold. Beer Can Appreciation Day, a January 24 holiday, celebrates that great day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans. On January 24, 1935, the American Can Company and Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company first sold Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream ale in Richmond, VA. Major brewing companies quickly followed suit. Over 200 million cans were sold in the first year.

There’s a big market for beer cans. Many people are beer can collectors. And, we’re not talking about taking them back to the store to get your deposit back. If you come across an old can, do not throw it out. Rather, check out the prices in a collector’s catalog, or on eBay. The most valuable cans are unopened ones.

Collectors meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it, and drink it, of course. Then, they wash and dry it. For collectors, there is no shortage of types of beer, cans and bottles, and sizes. A beer can collector may have hundreds of cans and bottles.

Beer Can Appreciation Day provides us with the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the many different kinds of beer cans. Enjoy today by starting or adding to your can collection. As you empty the new cans, drink the contents. After all, you don’t want to be wasteful do you?

Important Note: Please drink responsibly. And, if you drink…….don’t drive.

History and Origin of Backward Day

Sarah Nicole Miller and Megan Emily Scott created Backwards Day on January 29, 1961. They were thinking about making arts and crafts while milking cows on the Miller family farm when the idea struck them. Then, later that evening, they sat down and made the rules. The idea got out amid their community. On January 31, 1962, the first Backwards Day occurred. The two women were walking down the street when they saw all the townspeople doing things backwards! Miller and Scott were both surprised and elated that their holiday was taking root.
