About National Bird Feeding Month

When is National Bird Feeding Month? February

February is National Bird Feeding Month. If you feed them, they will come. Mid-winter is a tough time for backyard birds. Snow often covers their food source, while at the same time food supplies are dwindling. A reliable high-energy supply of bird seed is essential, to provide the energy your backyard birds need to survive the long-lasting extreme cold in February.

People of all ages participate in bird watching and bird feeding. About one-third of the U.S. adult population feeds wild birds in their backyards. The percentage is much higher for seniors.

Many national and local bird support groups actively support National Bird Feeding Month. This includes the National Bird-Feeding Society (NBFS) and the Wild Bird Centers of America.

It is easy to participate in this month-long event. If you haven’t hung up your bird feeder yet, what are you waiting for? If you don’t have a bird feeder, what are you waiting for? Purchase a feeder and bird seed. Then, hang it up today. Your backyard birds will entertain and reward you, as they feed from your feeder.

Bird Feeding Tip: If you are new at bird watching and bird feeding, hang the feeder in a strategic location outside your living room window. Then, you can watch them all day from the comfort of your chair or sofa.

History and Origin of National Bird Feeding Month

National Bird Feeding Month dates back to February 23, 1994. On this date, a congressional proclamation was issued by Congressman John Porter (R-IL), as he read a resolution into the Congressional Record.

Here are a couple of key statements from that reading:

“Mr. Speaker, I would like to recognize February, one of the most difficult months in the United States for wild birds, as National Bird Feeding Month. During this month, individuals are encouraged to provide food, water, and shelter to help wild birds survive. This assistance benefits the environment by supplementing wild birds’ natural diet of weed seeds and insects. Currently, one-third of the U.S. adult population feeds wild birds in their backyards.” Congressman Porter went on to say: “In addition, Mr. Speaker, backyard bird feeding is an entertaining, educational, and inexpensive pastime enjoyed by children and adults.”

National Bird Feeding Month is a true “National” event, as it is supported by a congressional proclamation.

About Love Your Pet Day

When is Love Your Pet Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 20

Love Your Pet Day, a February 20 holiday, is a day to spend time with your pet, and to pamper it. People just love their pets, and today is an easy excuse to spend time with them and give them special treatment. Give them lots of love and attention today. Your pet loves attention and will have a good time with you, regardless of how you choose to enjoy this day with him.

A pet is any animal that gives you comfort and or enjoyment. When we think of the ideal pet, we usually think about a fog or a cat. However, almost any animal can be a good pet. Some others include birds, pigs, rabbits, fish, turtles, snakes, and more. Then, if you want a pet that is low maintenance and easy to lease, try a pet rock or a chia pet.

Interestingly, Ecard companies have a wide choice of cards for today. There are many cards to send to pet owners to make them smile and feel good. However, we did not find a single Ecard to be sent to the pet. ……..hmmm.

How to Celebrate Love Your Pet Day

  • If you don’t have a pet, maybe today is the day to adopt a pet. Take a trip to your local Humane Society and bring home an animal that needs you. It will make you both feel good.
  • Spend time with it.
  • Take your pet to the groomer.
  • Teach him a new trick.
  • Give him special treats.
  • Take it for a walk.
  • If your pet is a dog, take him to the dog park.
  • Buy an article of clothes for him, if appropriate.
  • Take a selfie with it.

History and Origin of Love Your Pet Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Most likely, it was a pet lover or an animal rights group.

We’ve researched this holiday twice. During the original study, all references to this holiday referred to it as Love Your Pet Day. Beginning in the middle 2010s, some internet websites started to call this National Love Your Pet Day. There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a “National” day, which requires an act of congress. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation about this special day.

About Lost Penny Day

When is Lost Penny Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 12

Today is National Lost Penny Day! On this February 12 holiday, you can make a few pennies, by seeking out lost pennies, of which there are probably quite a few in the nooks and crannies of your home. An individual penny may not have a lot of monetary value these days. However, finding a penny is a sign of good luck. Go on a hunt for lost pennies today. Then, pile up some good fortune.

Heads or Tails? For the superstitious among us, finding a penny on the ground “heads up” will bring you good luck. However, if it’s “tails up”, picking it up brings bad luck.

Benjamin Franklin designed the first U.S. penny. The U.S. produced the first pennies in 1787. Since then, billions of pennies have been minted and put into circulation. In 1909, the penny became the first coin to bear a president’s image. It was first released on February 12, 1909, to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday.

Have a happy and prosperous National Lost Penny Day!!

How to Celebrate Lost Penny Day

Things to do on National Lost Penny Day:

  • Seek out lost pennies. Make a game of it. Be sure to include the kids in this scavenger hunt.
  • Become a coin collector. Start collecting them.
  • Flip a coin (a penny) to help you make decisions today.
  • Donate your pennies to a good cause.

History and Origin of Lost Penny Day

Eventologist Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith created Lost Penny Day in 1995. According to Koopersmith: “Petty change can make an astounding difference.”

When Koopersmith created this holiday, she did not call it National Lost Penny Day. Somewhere around 2015 – 2018, some internet websites began to add the word “National” to the title.

We did not find a congressional or presidential proclamation to make it a true “National” day. Considering the subject matter, it should be a national day.

About Lame Duck Day

When is Lame Duck Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 6.

Hey, today is everything it’s quacked up to be. Lame Duck Day, a February 6 holiday, is set aside to give recognition to people whose tenure in a position is running out. Very likely they are easing into retirement and a new lifestyle. You sometimes can identify them sitting back and reading the paper on an otherwise busy workday.

Okay, so you are probably thinking that a “lame duck” is a duck with some sort of injury. If only that were the reason for today! Rather, a human “Lame Duck” is a person who is in a position of some kind, and will soon be “shown the door”. The best example is an incumbent politician who is finishing his last term or had lost in the November elections. Outgoing politicians remain in office until the beginning of January. The term also applies to leaders, managers, etc., who are retiring or whose term of office is up.

A person becomes a lame duck the minute he announces his retirement or loses an election in November. He remains so until the day he leaves his position, and the “new guy” takes over. During the interim period, Lame Ducks are usually far less effective, and frequently ineffective. After all, loyalties will soon shift. It’s all but impossible to rally the troops to one take on more cause or project. The lame duck will soon be flying the coop, trading a briefcase for a suitcase.

The 20th amendment addressed presidential succession. And, it shortened the time between a politician being elected and when he or she takes office. Now there’s a lame duck issue if I’ve ever heard one.

How to Celebrate Lame Duck Day

  • If you are a Lame Duck: Enjoy those final days. Reflect upon your successes, and the joys and rewards the position provided to you. Kick back a little and have some fun today, and in the remaining days.
  •  If you know a Lame Duck: Supporters should provide recognition and support. Non-supporters can cut the Lame Duck a little slack today. They will soon be gone.
  • If you are a duck and you are lame, seek medical attention.

Kite Flying Day

When is Kite Flying Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 8

Today is Kite Flying Day. On this February 8 holiday, we hope the weather is good enough in your area to go fly one. Flying them is a lot of fun for people of all ages. People have enjoyed flying them for thousands of years. It’s an ever-popular activity for children and enjoyed by many adults.

Ben Franklin was perhaps the most well-known kite aficionado. He flew a kite in a thunderstorm and discovered electricity. You can say he got a charge out of flying them!

We are amazed that Kite Flying Day is held in the middle of winter. Chances are few people in the northern areas of the country will brave the snow and cold today to go outdoors and fly a kite. There is strong evidence suggesting this holiday began in South America where it is summer kite flying weather.

Did you know? Kites were first used by the military in ancient China over 3,000 years ago. It is unknown when people began flying them for fun.

If the weather is good in your area, we have one thing to say to you… Go fly a Kite!

Song of the Day: “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, from the movie Mary Poppins.

How to Celebrate Kite Flying Day

  • If the weather is okay in your area, go fly a kite.
  • Make a handmade kite.
  • Give a kite to a young child. Then, go fly it with him.
  • Watch the movie, Mary Poppins.

History and Origin of Kite Flying Day

We researched this day twice, once in the early 2000s, and again in the early 2020s. Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. It may have originated in South America, where kite-flying festivals are held at this time. Also, India holds an annual kite festival on January 14th.

We also found reference to many local or municipal “Kite Flying” days, held on various dates for several reasons. They were all local, and often a one-time event.

In our original research this was not referred to as a “National” day. In our second study, we found that beginning around 2015 some internet websites began referring to this as National Kite Flying Day, We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a true “National” day. It’s going to be memorable, make that historic breakfast that the kids will ask for over and over again.

It’s mid-winter. The snow and cold seem like they will never come to an end. Spring seems so far away. Stuck in a mid-winter funk, and suffering from cabin fever, it’s time to do something, weird, odd, and quirky.

To get the full excitement about this special day, tell the kids what’s gonna happen a few days before it arrives. The eager anticipation will lift their spirits and help to make winter go by just a little quicker.

So, who’s ready to eat ice cream for breakfast!!!    ….YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

History and Origin of International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

This very special day was created out of sheer winter boredom in the 1960s. A mom in Rochester, NY. decided it was time to give her kids something to look forward to, other than another day of gray skies and snowfall. So, she created this day with her two young boys. It sure did the trick, if only for a little while.

Our research did not find any documentation supporting this as an International Day. However, should it come up to a vote, we are definitely supporters!

Not to be outdone, many other retail outlets that sell frozen yogurt, have their promotions on this day.

National Frozen Yogurt Day, may sound more limiting, and apply to just one country (presumably the U.S.). But, who is to stop anyone, wherever they are, from enjoying delicious yogurt on this day?

Did You Know? Just a few years ago, there were two National Frozen Yogurt days on the calendar. And, there was almost a third day created to celebrate frozen yogurt. Want to know more? Read on…

How to Celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Day

History and Origin of International and National Frozen Yogurt Day

The International Frozen Yogurt Association (IFYA) created International Frozen Yogurt Day. At the time of its creation, there were two dates for National Frozen Yogurt Day. The IFYA chose the February 6 date to celebrate the holiday. It is well known that TCBY created National Frozen Yogurt Day in June. Rather than create a third day, they expanded the February 6 national holiday into an international day, so everyone could celebrate and enjoy frozen yogurt. No one seems to know why a February date was originally chosen. Perhaps, the intent was to increase sales in winter, when demand for frozen yogurt is at its lowest.

The Country’s Best Yogurt (TCBY) created National Frozen Yogurt Day in 1993. They did so to promote frozen yogurt. And, we are so glad that they did. Understandably, they selected the June date when warm summer creates a natural rise in demand for frozen yogurt and ice cream.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a true “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.
