International Safety Pin Day

Safety Pins

About International Safety Pin Day

When is International Safety Pin Day? This holiday is always observed on April 10

The versatile and invaluable safety pin was patented on April 10, 1849. Patent #6,281. On Safety Pin Day, an April 10 holiday, we celebrate this invention and its inventor.

The year was 1849. Inventor Walter Hunt was in debt. He owed $15 to a friend. Hunt decided the way to get out of debt, was to invent something that he could sell. What was that great idea, that profitable invention? It was the safety pin. He wisely applied for and received a patent for this invention. The safety pin is much safer than a straight pin and quickly became popular. He sold them for a profit. Later, he sold the patent and received $400 for it. He paid his friend back and pocketed the remaining $385, which was a handsome amount at the time.

Note: A similar invention was made in England. It was called the “English Pin”.

Safety Pin Uses

Safety pins have hundreds, if not thousands of uses. Here are some of them:

  • Pin together two pieces of clothing, often during sewing or sizing for sewing.
  • Pin together cloth diapers. You do remember cloth diapers, don’t you?
  • Keep cloth bags closed.
  • Punk culture uses them for decorating clothing.
  • Pinning things on a hat.
  • Pinning awards and medals on shirts and uniforms.
  • Pin ID name tags to clothing.
  • Lose a button? A safety pin is a good temporary replacement.
  • It is a form of good luck to some people.
  • Ukrainians put them on children to ward off evil spirits.

Safety Pin Trivia

About Richter Scale Day

When is Richter Scale Day? This holiday is always celebrated on April 26

If you are a little shaky or are experiencing tremors, that’s because today is Richter Scale Day. This April 26 holiday celebrates the birth of the inventor of the Richter Scale. Born on April 26, 1900, American seismologist Charles F. Richter (1900–1985) invented the Richter Scale in 1935.

Earthquakes have been shaking the earth since the dawn of time. They are the result of the movement of the tectonic plates deep underneath the earth. When these plates move or slip along each other, they create immense energy and shock wakes resulting in surface earthquakes and tsunamis. Large earthquakes result in tremendous loss of lives and property.

The Richter Scale measures the amount of energy released by an earthquake by measuring the magnitude or seismic waves produced by an earthquake. The Richter Scale measures range from 0 to 9. On the scale, each increase in number represents an earthquake 10 times more powerful. At 4.5 an earthquake can damage buildings and structures. At 7 on the Richter scale, severe and catastrophic damage can occur.

Deadliest/Strongest Earthquakes

August 24, 70: Mount Vesuvius, Italy erupts, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum. Thousands killed.

January 23, 1556: Shaanxi province, China. Deadliest earthquake in history kills 830,000 people.

April 18, 1906: The famous San Francisco earthquake and fire. 7.8 on the Richter scale.

December 16, 1920: Gansu province, 200,000 killed. 8.6 on the Richter scale.

September 1, 1923: Tokyo and Yokahoma, Japan. 8.3 magnitude earthquake destroys 1/3 of Tokyo and most of Yokohama. Over 140,000 killed.

May 22, 1927: Xining, China: 8.3 magnitude earthquake, approximately 200,000 killed.

May 22, 1960: Strongest earthquake ever recorded, at 9.5 magnitude, occurs off the coast of Chile.

In 1964, Alaskan earthquake measured 8.4.

Feb. 9, 1971 – Sylmar Earthquake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale

Jan 17, 1994 – Northridge Earthquake 6.7

Recent Major Earthquakes

February 6, 2023 – An earthquake hit Turkey and Syria. It measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale. A 7.5 earthquake occurred shortly after and was followed by thousands of aftershocks. Over 48,000 people were killed in Turkey and more than 6,000 in Syria. An estimated 230,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged.

December 26, 2004: An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia creates the deadliest Tsunami in history. The waves reach numerous Asian and African countries. More than 225,000 were killed, and millions were homeless.

October 2, 2005: In Kashmir, Pakistan, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake kills more than 80,000 people.

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Learn how the Richter scale works.
  • Watch an earthquake disaster movie. May we suggest San Andreas (2015 or Earthquake (1974)?
  • Learn more about how and why the earth trembles and shakes.

Reconciliation Day

Couple in Love

About Reconciliation Day

When is Reconciliation Day? This holiday is always observed on April 2

Are you on the outs with someone? Reconciliation Day is a special day to patch relationships and make amends. The goal of this April 2 holiday is to re-establish relationships between family, friends, and couples. Life is too short to hold a grudge against those we love. Rather, talk about your problems and issues. Be the first to offer the peace pipe or olive branch. Then, re-start the relationship. Kiss and makeup.

Estranged couples may find today to be an opportunity to work out their problems. People who have had a “falling out” with family members are encouraged to reach out and “mend the fence”. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our country’s major political parties could talk to each other and find an agreeable middle ground!?

For those considering a reconciliation, the old saying is “It’s never too late”. But, that is not true. Someday, it could be too late. So, please use today to begin your reconciliation.

How to Celebrate Reconciliation Day

  • Be the better person and open up a conversation with someone whom you are mad at or not speaking to.
  • Be a good listener. Hear what the other person’s position is.
  • Find the middle ground.
  • Be ready to agree to disagree. This can solve many rifts.
  • Say “I’m sorry”.
  • Now comes the best part: kiss and make-up.

Thought for Today

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” – – Winston Churchill

History and Origin of Reconciliation Day

Since 1989, newspaper columnist Ann Landers has promoted April 2 as Reconciliation Day. She writes an annual article dedicated to this day. She posts and replies to readers’ questions and issues on reconciliation.

There are many other “Relationship Days” held around the world on many different dates. Among the countries are South Africa, Korea, Angola, and many others that have struggled with war and strife.

A Bit of Wisdom for Today: Make peace with your past, so it won’t disturb the present.

Read a Road Map Day

Road Map

About Read a Road Map Day

When is Read a Road Map Day? This holiday is always celebrated on April 5

Thinking about going on a road trip? Why not dust off those old paper road maps and plot a course to get away!? Today is Read a Road Map Day, an April 5 holiday.

Nowadays most people use a GPS to go from point A to point B. You would think these tools would make paper maps obsolete. It has all but completely outmoded the old paper road maps we relied on. Yet, these paper maps persist. Why? Simply because some people just like to have them handy when planning for a trip, or when on the road. GPS units in your vehicle has also taken a big bite out of the popularity of online road maps like Mapquest.

Paper maps and online travel maps are not totally obsolete. They still have a useful function, or they would not exist. You can find paper maps through state and local travel bureaus, state, and local visitor centers, and at many rest stops along major highways.

Read a Road Map Day encourages us to take a step back in time and discover the value that road maps still have. Our GPS gets us to our destination in the quickest and shortest manner. But, is your trip about the destination or the journey? Road maps can help us to identify and plot routes that make the journey a more pleasant experience. There is so much to discover along the way. You can identify small and interesting towns or historic sites along the way that are passed by on today’s superhighways.

How to Celebrate and Participate Read a Road Map Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Pull out your old paper road maps.
  •  Plan a trip with a road map.
  • Bu road maps to plaa trip.
  • Stop as visitor centers to get their free maps.

As we researched Read a Road Map Day, it became blatantly obvious that something was missing. If you are looking at a road map it’s likely because you are contemplating a trip. It only makes sense then, that there should be a “Take a Road Trip Day”.  Surprisingly, there was no such special day. So, we created it! See Take a Road Trip Day.

Today's Quote

“I have found that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them, than to travel with them.” – – Mark Twain

History and Origin of Read a Road Map Day

Our research did not find the creator of this special day, or when it first began.

Many websites are now calling this a “National” day. This was not the case in the early 2000s. There is no presidential proclamation or act of congress.
