Kitchen Cleaning Tip

Wipe down range hoods with vegetable oil.

Range hoods collect all kinds of grease. Then, dust attaches itself to the grease making an ugly mess. Add a couple of drops of vegetable oil on a paper towel or rag. Then, wipe the range hood. The grime comes off easily without scrubbing that can scratch the hood.

How to Make Orange Peel Recipe

Orange Peel

About This Orange Peel Recipe

Most of us never see or use Orange Peel until it is time to begin baking for the holidays. As the holidays arrive, we open up our cookbooks and discover that many recipes use it. However, can you find it in the stores when you need it!? Chances are, the answer is …no. Fortunately, all is not lost. You just need a simple and easy orange peel recipe. With this article on how to make orange peel, you can make it at home.

This author went to a half dozen local stores and could not find orange peel. Then, an online search readily found it. But, the cost was eight to ten dollars or more, and that’s before shipping! So, I embarked on a journey to make it myself at home. It was amazingly simple and cost virtually nothing. Instead of tossing out orange peels, the rind is the only ingredient. Baked goods turned out so delicious that I will only use homemade orange peel in the future.

From the kitchen of: Bob Matthews, Rochester, N.Y.

Today’s Quote: “Mail your packages early so the post office can lose them in time for Christmas.” – – Johnny Carson

Orange Peel Recipe Ingredients

There is just one ingredient for making orange peel. Select an orange with a healthy, unblemished rind. Naval oranges work best because the rind is thick.

Organic oranges, free of pesiticides are recommended.

How to Make Orange Peel Rccipe

  1. First, wash the orange.
  2. Next, use a vegetable peeler to remove the orange outer layer. Make thin slices so you get as little of the white part of the rind as possible.
  3. Then, cut the rind slices into thin 1/8-inch strips.
  4. Place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. Spread the orange peels on top of the parchment paper.
  5. Use a dehydrator or bake them in the oven at 200° F for 20 to 25 minutes.
  6. Check to see if they are dry. If they are not quite dry, then continue to dry them for a few minutes more.
  7. Remove the dried orange peels from the oven and allow them to cool.
  8. Grind the orange peels in a blender, if desired.
  9. Now, they are ready to use.

Kitchen Cleaning Tip

Are your baking sheets looking a bit grungy?  You can restore them with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Sprinkle the sheet with baking soda. Then, lightly spray it with hydrogen peroxide. Next, sprinkle a little more baking soda on top.

Let it sit for an hour or two. Finally, wash the sheet off and see the difference!

How to Make Homemade Marshmallow Recipe

As the Christmas holiday song goes, “It’s a marshmallow world” I bet you never even thought about how to make homemade marshmallows. Neither did I until I read about it and discovered just how easy it is to make them. Making your own marshmallows is a novel thing to do. People will be pleasantly surprised when you serve them in hot chocolate, on top of a fruit cup, or all by themselves. You can make these homemade marshmallows any time of the year.

Today’s Quote: “Last night I dreamt I ate a ten-pound marshmallow. When I woke up the pillow was gone.” – – Tommy Cooper

Homemade Marshmallow Ingredients

Vegetable oil to brush onto the pan

About 1 cup powdered sugar to coat the pan and marshmallows.

3 (¼-oz.) envelopes powdered unflavored gelatin

1 cup water

1½ cups granulated sugar

1 cup light corn syrup

¼ tsp. salt

2 tsp. vanilla extract

Man Cooking at Stove. When is National Men Make Dinner Day?

How to Make Homemade Marshmallow

  1. Brush vegetable oil onto the inside of a 9″ x 13″ pan or baking dish.
  2. Then, lightly dust the pan with powdered sugar.
  3. In a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, put the unflavored gelatin and 1/2 cup of water. Stir lightly and let the gelatin dissolve and soften.
  4. Prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, put the granulated sugar, corn syrup, ½ cup of water, and salt. Bring it to a boil while gently stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  5. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and continue boiling the syrup until it reaches 240°F.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat. Wait for the bubbles to subside. Then, turn the mixer on low and slowly pour the syrup into the gelatin.
  7. Beat in the vanilla.
  8. Gradually increase the mixer speed to high. Continue beating for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is thick and forms a ribbon when the whisk is lifted.
  9. Scrape the mixture into the pan. Spread and smooth it out with a wet spatula.
  10. Allow the marshmallows to cool until they are no longer sticky. It takes about 4 hours. Or, cover it with aluminum foil and let it sit overnight.
  11. To cut the marshmallows, first dust the top of them with powdered sugar.
  12. Then, dust a cutting board with powdered sugar.
  13. Next, use a rubber spatula to pull the marshmallows away from the pan. Invert the pan over the cutting board and allow the marshmallow to drop onto the board.
  14. Dust the marshmallow with more powdered sugar.
  15. Brush a long, thin knife with vegetable oil and powdered sugar so it won’t stick in the marshmallows.
  16. Now, cut the marshmallow in the pan into 6 to 8 inch strips, depending on how big or small you want them. And then cut them crosswise.
  17. Coat the cut pieces with more powdered sugar. Remove any excess sugar.
  18. Store the marshmallows in an air-tight container. They store for up to a week.

Recipe Tip: Try using a pizza cutter instead of a sharp knife.

About this Turkey and Dressing Recipe

Recipe Description: Thanksgiving dinner is over. Once more, it was a huge meal and there’s a mountain of leftovers. This turkey and dressing recipe is good for using up those leftovers after the big Thanksgiving meal, or any time you make a turkey dinner. It’s a meal all by itself.

Let’s distinguish between turkey dressing and turkey stuffing. Stuffing is a mixture of bread, onions, celery, sometimes sausage, and spices, most notably sage. On the other hand, turkey dressing is a mixture of turkey meat, bread, and vegetables. It’s a meal in and of itself.

Household Cleaning Tip

Microfiber cloths are wonderful cleaning tools. You will find yourself throwing out all your other cleaning rags. The microfibers on the cloth have an electromagnetic field to capture dust and other debris particles. Your rags just push the dust around and put a lot of it back into the air. Use it on any surface. And, they are reusable. To clean them put them into the wash without bleach or fabric softener. Then, let them air dry.
