About National Ding-a-Ling Day

When is National Ding-a-Ling Day? This holiday is always observed on December 12

Today is National Ding-a-Ling Day, a very special day to “Ring your Bell”.  Nope, we’re not talking about the Salvation Army Bell Ringers, standing with their bells and kettles, outside of every store in the country. On this December 12 holiday, you should brace yourself for bizarre and crazy behavior, from all of the people you encounter today. Even normally conservative people have been known to go a little crazy on this day.

Some people say this is a day for wackos, lunatics, and others who are off their rockers. We say it is simply a day to cut loose and act a little weird.

For the record: Ding-a-Lings and Ding Bats are not quite the same things. Ding-a-lings are just weird. They are funny and fun to be with and watch. Dingbats are bat crazy and not a lot of fun.

Song of the Day: My Ding A Ling (1972) by Chuck Berry. Caution: This is a catchy tune. Once you get it in your head, it is hard to get it out.

How to Celebrate National Ding-a-Ling Day

What do you do to celebrate this day? Be ever vigilant to the ding-a-lings that will come out of the woodwork. Ding-a-Lings will be everywhere: on the road, on the street, in stores, and even in your house. And there’s no shortage of ding-a-lings where you work. We suggest you get into the holiday spirit and become a ding-a-ling yourself……But, please do so for just one day.

If you prefer to do something good and worthwhile, we suggest you be the ding-a-ling that rings the bell for the Salvation Army. Your efforts will raise money to help people in need in your community.

Ring someone’s bell… if you know what I mean.

Of course, you can bang a gong if you can find one.

Christmas Card Day

When is Christmas Card Day? December 9 holidays

About Christmas Card Day

When is Christmas Card Day? This special day is always observed on December 9

Is your Christmas card list up to date? Christmas Card Day is a December 9 holiday. This holiday honors Sir Henry Cole (1818 – 1874) of England. Cole created the first commercial Christmas Card in 1843. It grew into a popular holiday tradition. People created a list of all friends and family members. The number of cards you received became a source of pride. And, you had to send a card out to everyone who sent you one. As a result, the list grew year after year. Some people had a list of 50 to 100 people or more. The cards were prominently displayed on walls and sometimes hung on a string across the room. It became a holiday decoration of sorts.

Just a few decades ago, sending Christmas cards through the mail was a holiday “must”. Now, sending cards through the mail continues decline in popularity. The cost of postage is a major expenditure that stretches the holiday budget. And, the time spent writing and sending them during the hectic holiday season adds to the stress of an already busy season. As a result, more and more stop sending them entirely. Yet, others have cut down their lists to just a choice few.

On the other hand, as mailed Christmas cards continually decline every year, free online Ecard usage is on the uptick. And, they take much less time to send. Animated Christmas and daily seasonal Ecards have made sending and receiving them a lot of fun.

How to Celebrate Christmas Card Day

Here is how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Today is a good day to send out your Christmas cards and holiday greetings.  If you have yet to do so, use today to get started.
  • Switch over to free, online Christmas cards. Both you and the recipients will love them.

Thought for Today

“Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling.” – – Edna Ferber

History and Origin of Christmas Card Day

We found no information about the creator of this holiday or when it started. We suspect that on this date, Henry Cole marketed the commercial Christmas card. The timing is certainly appropriate. We have not yet confirmed this. He was born in July and died in April, so it does not mark his birth or death.

This Day in History

Additionally, here are some of the things that happened on this day:

  • “A Charlie Brown Christmas” premieres on television on CBS. (1965)
  • Lech Walesa wins Poland’s first direct presidential election. (1990)

History and Origin of Card Playing Day

Despite our extensive research efforts, we have not yet identified the creator of this holiday. Nor, do we know why it was created. We can only speculate that the creator was either a card shark or someone else who loves to play cards.

The earliest reference we found to this holiday is 200y. At the time, the original title of this holiday was Card Playing Day. Through to 2014, this was the title. Then, in 2015, a few internet websites began to refer to it as National Card Playing Day. Now, the vast majority of internet websites include “National” in the title. But, the alteration obviously was not at the approval of the creator, as he remains unidentified to this day. With this in mind, we choose to call it by its original name that the creator chose for this day.
