Paul Bunyan Day

About Paul Bunyan Day

When is Paul Bunyan Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 28

Paul Bunyan Day is a giant of a day. Paul Bunyan was a gigantic lumberjack of American Folklore. According to folklore, Paul Bunyan and Babe His Blue Ox lived and traveled around the country. He is best known for his logging feats.

Paul Bunyan is “credited” with many deeds. Among his more legendary feats:

  • He created logging in the U.S.
  • He scooped out the great lakes to water Babe the ox.
  • He cleared the entire states of North and South Dakota for farming.
  • He trained ants to do logging work. They were, of course, Carpenter Ants.
  • Babe’s large footprints created Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes.

Today’s Theme Song: The Ballad of Balul Bunyan (1973)

The Birthplace of Paul Bunyan

Maine is the birthplace of the lumber industry. The city of Bangor, Maine boasts that their city is the birthplace of renowned lumberjack Paul Bunyan.  They even have his birth certificate on display as proof. However, Minnesota also claims to be his birthplace.

In his honor, the city of Bangor unveiled a giant statue of him on February 12, 1959. This was the 125th anniversary of his birth. While there are other statues of him, this is the world’s largest. It is 31 feet high and weighs 3,700 pounds. It is hurricane-proof to winds of 110 mph.

Although the statue in Bangor, Maine is the largest, there are at least a dozen statues of him around the country. They are primarily in Maine, Minnesota, and other states in the Midwest where he was known to travel and work.

How to Celebrate Paul Bunyan Day

You can celebrate this special holiday in a giant way.

  • Learn more about the man and his tales.
  • Spread the tales around. They are best told by word of mouth around a campfire.
  • Visit one of his statues. They are found from coast to coast.

Today's Quote

“Ten people who speak make more noise than 10,000 who are silent.” – – Napoleon Bonaparte.

History and Origin of Paul Bunyan Day

French Canadians created the first legends of Paul Bunyan during the Papineau rebellion of 1837.  Paul Bunyan with Babe the Blue Ox quickly became a huge American legend, traveling all over the Midwest. Many of the tales originated in the lumberjack industry and logging communities. Like all good folklore, it was passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. Over campfires, his legend grew, and tales were created. Written tales emerged in the early 1900s.

We are not certain why Paul Bunyan Day is on June 28. His birthday is February 12, 1834.

Did You Know? Paul Bunyan’s birth certificate is on display in the city clerk’s office in Bangor, Maine.

Turkey Dinner

About National Turkey Lovers Day

When is National Turkey Day? This holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday in June

National Turkey Lovers Day is a special day that just had to be created. When you think about eating delicious turkey, you usually think about Thanksgiving and perhaps Christmas. To millions of Americans, turkey is their favorite meal. Why then, don’t we have it more often on any of the other 364 days of the year? Perhaps, the answer is simple. Perhaps, we just don’t think about it. Then, along comes National Turkey Lovers Day, to remind us to have it in the middle of June.

How do you celebrate National Turkey Lovers Day?

The answer to this question is quite simple. Eat turkey today. The true participant will eat turkey for both lunch and dinner. A turkey sandwich, hot or cold, along with some turkey soup is the perfect lunchtime fare today. For dinner, you have many more options. Chances are the weather will be hot, so you won’t want to heat the kitchen roasting a traditional turkey dinner. We suggest you cook it outdoors: grill it, smoke it, fry it, or try a trash can turkey. Either way, it will be delicious.  There is a huge variety of rubs, oils, and sauces you can put on it.

Once you enjoy National Turkey Lovers Day, we hope you have turkey regularly all year round!

There are some ways to celebrate this delicious day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Eat turkey for lunch and dinner.
  • Need a late-night snack. You know the kind of sandwich to make.

  • We believe the creator of this day established a Sunday to celebrate this holiday on a Sunday, so you can smoke it or fry it outdoors.

When is National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day? This holiday is always held on June 9

It’s National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day. This June 9 holiday is a time to enjoy a slice of a pie you may never have tried before. While Strawberry Rhubarb Pie has a long history, dating back to the 1800s, not too many people have ever tried it. Some people, especially the younger crowd, do not even know what rhubarb is.

The rhubarb plant has a long, thick, edible stem with good flavor, but a tart taste. Rhubarb recipes use sugar to sweeten it. The leaves are not eaten, as they are poisonous. National Selfie Day

Selfie Stick

When is National Selfie Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 21

Today is National Selfie Day. It’s a cinch to participate in this June 21 holiday. And, it’s fun! Simply take your smartphone out of your pocket or purse and take a selfie. Better yet, get a couple of friends, and take a selfie with them. Use a selfie stick if it is a large group. Make sure to put on a big smile. And, don’t forget to post it on social media so others know how much fun you’re having.

Selfies are extremely popular. Millions of them are taken each and every day. It kind of makes you wonder why we need a special day to encourage us to take a selfie.  The term “selfie” is a slight misnomer. While “Selfie” means a picture you take of yourself, it can also be a picture of you with others.

Most people believe selfies originated when smartphones came on the scene. Smartphones have built-in, hi pixel cameras, with a lens on both sides of the camera, making it easy to take a selfie. In actuality, selfies were around for a long, long time, they just weren’t called “selfies”. Back in the day of film-based cameras, some of them had a delay feature on the camera. You could set the camera up on a table or tripod, aim it, and press the delay button (usually ten seconds). Then, you’d run to where the camera was aimed and pose. They were not called selfies. Although, some people referred to them as “self-portraits”.

We recommend you carry a Selfie Stick. This lets you take in more of the image you are capturing.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Selfie Day

Enjoying National Selfie Day is so much fun. Here are some ideas on how you can participate:

  • Take selfies all day, everywhere you go.
  • Include interesting places, things you do, and what you eat.
  • Most of all, include selfies of you with your BFF and photos of all of your other friends.
  • Posting on social media is a “must do”.

Thought for Today

If a picture you take of yourself is called a “selfie”, shouldn’t you call a picture you take of yourself and a group of friends a “groupie”?

History and Origin of National Selfie Day

Our research did not find the creator of this special day. This day was originated sometime after the arrival of smartphones with built-in cameras with the capability to take hand-held selfies. At, most this holiday has been around since the early 2000’s.

We found no documentation supporting this to be a formal “National” day, which requires a presidential proclamation, or an act of Congress.

National Seashell Day

Seashell Day

When is National Seashell Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 21

Today is the first day of summer. It’s time to hit the beach, soak up some rays, and search for seashells. It makes perfect sense that today is also National Sea Shell Day. On this June 21 holiday, feel the warm sand and saltwater on your toes, as you collect gifts from the sea.

Sea shells are found on beaches around the world. As they crumble and break down, seashells help to form the very beach where you love to sunbathe and swim. Beachgoers young and old, love to collect seashells of all shapes and sizes. We take them home and put them on display, as a reminder of those warm, sunny, and fun days on the beach.

What’s your favorite seashell? A conch, a clam, a sand dollar, or a seahorse (not actually a seashell), perhaps? Chances are, you collect them all. As you pick them off the beach, make sure the shell is empty and not alive. When in doubt, gently, place them back in the ocean. With a little luck, the tide will take the little fella safely into the sea, and not back onto the beach.

The best time to search for seashells is from an hour before to an hour after low tide. Most can be found along the high tide mark. During the peak summer season, thousands of people are on the beach, looking to beat you to the treasure trove of unbroken seashells. The most successful sea shell hunt occurs at first light when seashells from the night before are most plentiful.

Did You Know? The Guinness World Book of Records has a category for the largest human image of a seashell. It included 1.093 people.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Seashell Day

If you are near the ocean, celebrating this holiday is fun.

  • Go to the beach and collect seashells.
  • Give sea shells away to young children. They love them.
  • Learn about the different kinds of shells and how marine life use them as their home and for protection against predators.
