National Quesadilla Day

When is National Quesadilla Day? Dia de la quesadilla. September 25 holidays.

About National Quesadilla Day

When is National Quesadilla Day Celebrated? This special day is always observed on September 25

Break out your quesadilla maker. Today is National Quesadilla Day, or Dia de la Quesadilla. On this September 25 holiday, we celebrate and enjoy a truly culinary treat. It’s hard to believe today, but quesadillas were largely unknown in many parts of the United States just a hundred (or less) years ago. The ancient Aztecs knew they had a good thing many centuries before Europeans stepped foot in the New World. Aztec tribes in Mexico were the first to make corn tortillas.  It didn’t take them long to begin stuffing cheese and other things in between two of them. Today, almost all of us love this Mexican food staple and consume them often.

What’s for dinner tonight? Go Mexican or Tex-Mex. Make quesadillas for an appetizer, or your main course. There’s no wrong way to make them. So, bring out your quesadilla makers, and let’s eat! We just know quesadillas will have you dancing the Jarabe Tapatio, the national dance of Mexico. This dance is also called the “Mexican Hat Dance”.

We are certain you will have quesadillas as some point during the day. They are popular on Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, and many other Mexican holidays. But, people enjoy them all year long.

Did You Know? Quesadilla in English is translated to “little cheesy thing”.

Mexican Flag. When is Cinco de Mayo Day? May 5 holiday. Battle of Puebla.

Quesadilla Trivia

Amaze your friends with your knowledge of these “cheesy little things”. Here are some facts they probably do not know:

  • In Central Mexico, they contain shredded chicken, beef, pork, and other meats. And they do not contain cheese.
  • Aztec cultures originally used it as a dessert.
  • They are also a good source of calcium and fiber. However, for the diet conscious, they have a fair amount of carbs and fats.
  • Quesadillas are on the menu at virtually every Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant, and many other restaurants.
  • Mexico is the top producer of tortillas. The United States is second.
  • The most common cheeses used are Monterrey Jack, Colby Jack, and cheddar. These cheeses have a high melting point.
  • It is estimated that 1 in 3 Americans eat a quesadilla on average once a week.
  • Corn tortillas are gluten-free.
  • Flour tortillas have more calories, fat, and carbs.

History and Evolution of Quesadillas

Ancient Aztecs in Mexico first made corn tortillas in 500 B.C. They put pumpkin, zucchini, and other vegetables inside, and baked them in clay ovens.  Over time, the Aztecs put meats between the tortillas. Many centuries later, quesadillas evolved from this ancient recipe. Then, flour tortillas were created, giving the option of using corn or wheat-based tortillas. Today, the basic quesadilla ingredients are grated cheese placed between two tortillas and then heated or baked. Of course, like any good food item, two things happened. First, quesadillas became popular all over the world. Second, people began creating variations to the recipe, adding all sorts of ingredients inside or on top of them.

Have it your way! Today there are dozens, if not hundreds, of quesadilla recipes to try. Or you can create your own recipe. You can add an amazing number of items to the basic recipe. Some of the more popular items are a variety of cheeses, chicken, beef, pork or other meats, black beans, black olives, spinach, zucchini, pumpkin, tofu, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, green chilies, and other peppers.

About World Dream Day

When is World Dream Day Celebrated? This special day is always observed on September 25

Is your life on “Cloud 9”? We hope you’re “livin’ the dream” as today is World Dream Day. If not, use this September 25 holiday to do something about it. According to the creator of this holiday, the goal is to “bring people together and to motivate us to have big dreams”. It also impresses upon us that we have the power to make all of our hopes and aspirations come true. Today is a perfect day to make plans for our future and to take steps to make those dreams come true. While you are doing these things today, share your hopes and aspirations with the special people in your life.

This holiday is also a time to reflect upon the dreams, and sometimes nightmares, you have when you’re asleep. But, do you even remember them? If not, it’s okay. Try as we might, most of us forget them upon awakening. In our sleep, our hopes and aspirations, along with our many fears, often play themselves out during REM sleep only to fade away as we open our eyes to a new day.

Most dreams occur at night in bed. But, they can come to us anywhere and anytime we fall asleep. You may have one while taking a catnap in front of the television or falling asleep at work. If you fall asleep at work, you’ll more likely experience a nightmare that the boss catches you snoozing on the job. You can also be daydreaming as you go about your busy day. This can be a pleasant experience, or you may find yourself bumping into a wall or other object.

Song of the Day: What a Day for a Daydream by the Lovin Spoonful (1966)

  • Our most vivid dreams come during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.
  •  Kids have more nightmares than adults.
  •  Eating late at night increases the likelihood of having nightmares.
  • Women have more scary dreams than men.
  • Recurring dreams often have themes.
  • 12% of dreams are in black & white.
  • During periods of low stress in our lives, dreams tend to be more pleasant.

National Paper Airplane Day

National Paper Airplane Day, May 26

About National Paper Airplane Day

When is National Paper Airplane Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 26

Today is going to be a fun day. This holiday is not about promoting a cause. It’s not a commemoration of an event, good or bad. Rather, National Paper Airplane Day is a day to play with a child’s toy and just have fun. On this May 26 holiday, people of all ages celebrate by making, decorating, and playing with paper airplanes. This holiday is Wendell and Oliver Wright approved. And, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they flew them at Kitty Hawk before they made their infamous flight.

It’s child’s play. Let’s all be kids again and make a plane out of paper. If you’re an adult, you’d probably admit to flying them around the home or in the office. Need to send a message to the boss? Forget sending it via email or in a text today. Instead, write it on a sheet of paper. Then fold it into an airplane and send the message to him via airmail straight into his office. It just might get his attention faster than sending the message in a text. In any case, it’s bound to get some kind of reaction from him.

People have been making and flying these aeronautical gliders for hundreds of years. Kids love them, and adults love them, too. But, it’s not all for play. Flying paper airplanes is a competitive activity with competitions held around the world to see who has the best design to fly them faster, higher, and longer. So, grab a few sheets of paper, and let’s go flying!

The History of Paper Airplanes

It all began in the year 105 when paper was invented in China. Paper would revolutionize the world. Man no longer needed to write history on the walls of caves. It is used for so many things, including newspapers to keep us up to date on current events, books to teach and entertain us, greeting cards, art projects, and paper to send each other messages. We make wallpaper to decorate our homes. And of course, it is used to make paper airplanes.

Paper kites were invented somewhere between 200 – 250. But, paper airplanes would not be invented until many centuries later. It is not known who invented the paper airplane or exactly when it was invented. In 1859, a book for kids contained instructions on how to fold paper to make a “paper dart”. Then in 1873, the term “paper airplane: replaced the word “paper dart.

Since its invention, kids and adults have been making them and having loads of fun. From a simple design in the 1800s, creative minds have come up with 50 designs.  We decorate them too, using colored pencils, crayons, decals and stickers.

For the Record

We all love to fly our paper airplanes to see how far they will fly and how long it stays in the air. We do it for fun. But, for some of us, it is a serious, record-setting endeavor.

Guinness World Records:

Longest Time in the Air: On December 19, 2010, Takuo Toda from Japan set the record at 29.2 seconds in the air.

Longest Distance: In February 2102 Joe Ayob from California, flew a paper airplane a record 226′ 10″. Joe was a former college quarterback. Did that help him to set the world record? Possibly. The plane was constructed by John Collins.

Highest Altitude: On June 24, 2015, David Green flew a paper airplane from a record-high altitude of 114,970.5 feet.

Largest Plane: On September 28, 2013, students and employees at the Braunschweig Institute of Technology in Braunschweig, Germany launched the biggest paper airplane ever. The plane had a wingspan of 59.7 feet.

How to Celebrate National Paper Airplane Day

Here are a few fun ways to participate in and celebrate National Paper Airplane Day:

  • Fly your paper airplane.
  • Begin by folding a piece of paper into your favorite paper airplane design. Create a new design. As previously mentioned, there currently are over 50 designs.
  • Before you launch it to hopefully soar above the clouds, decorate it.
  • Have a paper airplane party and give prizes for the best design, and best-decorated plane.
  • Grade schoolteachers can have paper airplane-making and decorating projects in art class.
  • Have a contest to see who can fly it the farthest and for the longest airtime.

National Mimosa Day

Mimosa Day, National Hangover Day. January 1 holidays

About National Mimosa Day

When is National Mimosa Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 16

Are you looking for an excuse to drink before noon? Have a Mimosa. Here’s a great way to start the day. A little orange juice mixed with some bubbly wakes you up in a pleasant way. Now, don’t you think every day should be National Mimosa Day? Are you going to a brunch on this May 16 holiday? Mimosas are certain to be on the menu. Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s compete for the title of the official brunch drink.

People commonly associate Mimosas with brunch. Yes, it is almost always available at a brunch. However, you can enjoy it at any meal and any time of the day or night. As for events, it is popular at many parties and celebrations, especially bridal showers. You can enjoy Mimosas at spas and some nail salons, too.

There is speculation that the drink got its name from the Mimosa plant in Australia. While this can easily be the case, there is no known direct link between the plant and the drink.

Did You Know? Orange juice is the most popular fruit juice in the world.

Who Created Mimosas?

The roots of this drink go back to a drink simply named “Champagne Orange”, which was consumed in French wine country long before the first Mimosa was poured into a flute glass. Mimosas date back to the 1920s. It was created at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Paris, French in 1925. In 1936, bartender Frank Meier was the first to publish the recipe in the book “The Art of Mixing Drinks”. British royalty popularized this drink when they brought it back from a trip to France. After quickly gaining popularity in England, this summer cooler became popular around the world.

Did You Know?  In 1921, Buck’s Fizz was created at London’s Buck Club. It is the predecessor to the Mimosa.

How to Make a Mimosa

The classic mimosa is made of equal parts of orange juice and champagne. It is typically served in a champagne flute. You can garnish it with a piece of fruit on the rim, like strawberry or a slice of kiwi or lemon. Or, add a couple of blueberries, raspberries, or other fruit into the drink. Also, you can decorate the glass with a sprig of mint leaves.

Try a variation of the Mimosa. Make a Bellini using peach juice instead of orange juice. Pineapple or other fruit juices can be substituted as well.

To make a non-alcoholic drink, simply substitute ginger ale instead of champagne.

Mimosa Trivia and Fun Facts

As you enjoy a mimosa or two at brunch, take a few minutes to learn a little mimosa trivia and fun facts.

  • It is very easy to make. Just mix together orange juice and champagne. Mimosas are mood boosters. C’mon, is anyone surprised that an alcoholic beverage boosts your mood!?
  • Mimosa is named after the Australian Mimosa flower. It is a bright and cheerful yellow flower with delicate petals.
  • Thanks to the orange juice, it is high in healthy vitamin C.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Mimosa Day

Here are some ways to participate in National Mimosa Day:

  • Go to a brunch at a restaurant and order a Mimosa. Hold a brunch at your house. Invite family or guests. Offer Mimosas to the adults.
  • Make Virgin Mimosas for your kids.
  • Have it as a dinner cocktail.
  • Enjoy it as a mid-day cooler.
  • Make a Bellini or any other variant of this drink.

Today's Quote

“I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.” – – Dean Martin

History and Origin of National Mimosa Day

Amazingly, little is known about the actual origin of this holiday. Our research has not identified the creator of this day or the reason he or she created it. Nor, do we know the reasoning behind the selection of this date. Was the creator a little too tipsy to document this day? Perhaps we will never know.

This is referred to as a “National” day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

Petunia Hanging Basket

History and Origin of Hanging Flower Baskets Day

In 2023, Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of HolidayInsights.com created Hanging Flower Baskets Day. The objective of this day is to make the world a little more beautiful by hanging brightly blooming flower baskets around your home, and your place of work. The sale of hanging flower planters peaks during the month of May.

The date of the Saturday before Mother’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate this holiday. They are a hugely popular gift for moms. As a result, garden stores are filled with every imaginable color, size, and shape of flower planters. And, this is the perfect time of the year to put them outdoors. So, while you are buying flower planters for Mom, get a few for your home, too.

How to Care for Hanging Flower Planters

Caring for hanging flower planters is not difficult. However, it requires frequent attention. Hanging under the eaves of your house, the planter does not benefit from summer rain. It dries out quickly, especially in hot and humid weather. Daily watering may be needed during heat spells.

Also, there is a limited amount of soil in the planter that does not have sufficient nutrients to feed the plants all season long. So, additional fertilizer is required every 2 – 3 weeks to keep the plant vibrantly blooming. Use liquid fertilizer or plant fertilizer spikes.

Deadhead spent blooms as soon as they die off. this Promotes new blooms. More on deadheading flowers.

Remove any dead or unsightly leaves. Give the plants a trim, if needed.

Spice Up Your Life Day was created in 2023 by Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY. Matthews is the owner of HolidayInsights.com.

In February the weather is lousy, and people are stuck indoors. We are often lying on the couch watching television. Matthews created this day to get us off of the couch and do something interesting and perhaps a little wild and crazy. It breaks the monotony of those long winter days and nights. And importantly, it helps to make winter go by just a little faster.

The date for this February 17 holiday occurs during an otherwise dull and boring time of the year. With spring still weeks away, we need something to spice up our lives. Unquestionably, this holiday comes at the perfect time.
