Irish Reuben Grill Day

How to Make Reuben Grill Recipe, Corned Beef Sandwich. March 2 holidays

About Irish Reuben Grill Day

When is Irish Reuben Grill Day? This holiday is always celebrated on March 2

Some people call it a Reuben Grill, while others simply call it a Reuben sandwich. Either way, it is a popular deli and luncheon sandwich worthy of its own special holiday. Today is Reuben Grill Day. On this March 2 holiday, we celebrate and enjoy a delicious, corned beef pub-style sandwich. Those of us of Irish descent just love it. But, you don’t have to be Irish to like it. It is very popular for lunch at New York-style delis and especially Irish pubs. Reuben grill sandwiches are best enjoyed with a cold draught of Guinness Stout.

Don’t wait until Saint Patrick’s Day to enjoy this great American Sandwich. That’s right, the Reuben Grill sandwich was first created in America, not Ireland. This sandwich was created in America. And it really has an international flavor. The ingredients include:

  • Corned Beef, a Jewish deli meat
  • Thousand Island (American) or Russian Dressing
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Sauerkraut, an Eastern European vegetable German

Did You Know? The Reuben sandwich won the National Sandwich Idea Contest in 1956. There were over 600 entries. This contest is held annually.

Origin of the Reuben Sandwich

The origin of the Reuben Grill sandwich has two origins.

The earliest claim occurred in 1914. Arnold Reuben, owner of Reuben’s Deli on E. 58th Street was asked to make a sandwich for hungry actress Annette Seelos. He made the first Reuben sandwich on rye bread. It contained ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing. The sandwich was not grilled or heated. It was named the “Reuben Special”.

Omaha, Nebraska was the second place to claim to be the original creator of the Reuben sandwich. Bernard Schimmel was the chef in the kitchen of his father’s Blackstone Hotel. Local grocery store owner Reuben Kulafofsky asked him to make a sandwich with corned beef and sauerkraut. Schimmell made it on rye bread, also adding Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. He then grilled it.

Which of these two people is the original inventor? You make the call.

How to Celebrate Irish Reuben Grill Day

Like other food holidays, Irish Reuben Grill Day is a culinary delight. Here are some ways how to celebrate this special day:

  • Make a Reuben grill sandwich at home.
  • Go to an Irish pub and order it for lunch or dinner.
  • Introduce this great sandwich to someone who hasn’t had one before.
  • Have it as a slider.
  • Enjoy Reuben grill roll-ups.

Today's Irish Saying

May your blessings far outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

History and Origin of Irish Reuben Grill Day

This holiday was created by Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of Holiday Insights.com. Matthews said he created this day because a Reuben Grill is a great sandwich that deserves its own holiday. Also, we can and should enjoy it at any time of the year. Many people don’t even think of them until Saint Patrick’s Day. This holiday serves as an early reminder that you can have one today. So, don’t wait, have one today.

The date was selected simply to encourage us to have this corned beef deli sandwich at times other than Saint Patrick’s Day.  A date two weeks before seems perfect.

There’s a delicious fascination with apples. We’ve been talking about them and enjoying them since the Garden of Eden. So, it only makes sense that we celebrate them with this special day. Without a doubt, National Apple Pie Day is as American as apple pie! On this May 13 holiday, we celebrate America’s favorite flavor of pie. So, pull out your cookbook and choose among a wide range of apple pie recipes. Or, be daring and find a new recipe to try out. Then, start baking.

We’ve been enjoying apple pie for hundreds of years. The pilgrims brought apple pie to the New World when they arrived in Jamestown. In 1902, the New York Times proclaimed apple pie the “American symbol for prosperity”. It is the favorite pie of one in five Americans. It is a dessert for all meals and nighttime snacks. 35% of us admit to eating apple pie for breakfast.

Like any other food holiday, is it fun and easy to enjoy this day. Simply have a slice or two of apple pie.

The Evolution of "An Apple a Day..."

Today’s favorite saying is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This saying has a long history and the wording evolved. The saying alludes to the health benefits of eating them.

It all began in England in the 1860s. At the time, the original saying was “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” While this quickly became a popular saying, the author is unknown. Over the years, several variations of this proverb evolved. For example, at times over the years, it read: “An apple a day, no doctor to pay” and “An apple a day sends the doctor away”. It wasn’t until 1922 that the current version of this adage came into use.

Did You Know? Tart apple varieties are the best for baking.

History and Origin of National Apple Pie Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day.  There is very little factual information about this holiday. However, we continue to research this holiday.

We found no documentation of why this date was selected. The date mildly surprised us, as we thought this day would have been on a day during the fall harvest. Perhaps this date was selected as it is the perfect time of year to plant an apple tree or two in your backyard.

We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

Pigeon Appreciation Day

Pigeon Appreciation Day

About Pigeon Appreciation Day

When is Pigeon Appreciation Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 13

Without a doubt, many of you who read about this holiday initially think “What a dirty bird. Why do we have Pigeon Appreciation Day?” After you finish reading this article, you will likely become a fan of pigeons and celebrate this June 13 holiday. For example, we will describe to you how a single pigeon is credited with saving the lives of 194 American servicemen during World War I. That alone is a reason to celebrate pigeons in my book.

Pigeons get a bad rap, largely because there are so many of them on city streets scrounging for a free meal. But they are not dirty birds and do not spread disease as some believe. Pigeons are entertaining to watch. Just sit on a park bench and watch them in action. And while you are watching, feed them. Chances are they will remember you the next time you sit on a park bench. They remember the hand that feeds them.

Perhaps the best example of how people love pigeons is in the movie Mary Poppins (1964). In the movie, she is the nanny for two children who go on to feed the birds as Mary Poppins sings “Feed the Birds, Tuppence a Bag”. Do you know what those birds were? You guessed it, pigeons.

Did You Know? “Tuppence” is another word for two pence. It’s 3-4 U.S. cents.

The Story of Cher Ami, an American Hero

On October 3, 1918, U.S. Army Major Charles W. Whittlesey and 550 men under his command were caught by a hillside behind enemy lines.  They had little food and ammunition. The Germans were pummeling them. In addition, allied forces did not know they were there, and the troops were suffering casualties from friendly artillery fire. Many American soldiers were killed or injured.

Desperate for relief, Major Whittlesey attached notes to homing pigeons seeking rescue. The first two homing pigeons sent out were shot down by German forces. Then, Whittlesey released a third homing pigeon named Cher Ami with the message “We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heavens sake stop it.”

Despite being shot twice, Cher Ami made it back to the Allied lines. This stopped the friendly fire shelling. Of the 550 men under Whittlesey’s command, only 194 survived thanks to Cher Ami. Cher Ami survived his injuries. He died on June 13, 1919.

Pigeon Trivia

Here’s some pigeon trivia to share with your friends:

  • At one time, pigeons were the most populous bird in the world.
  • There are many pigeon shows and races all over the world.
  • It is estimated that at one time, there were over 5 billion in America alone.
  • They date back over 3,000 years.
  • People keep them as pets.
  • In the wild they live 3 – 10 years. Pet pigeons live 9 – 15 years.
  • They were popular as a source of food.
  • The common city pigeon is a rock pigeon. It was the first bird ever domesticated.
  • They are very social, living in groups.
  • They mate for life.
  • Sunflowers are one of their favorite foods.
  • During WWII American forces had 200,000 homing pigeons.
  • A pigeon can find its way back to their nest from 1,300 miles away.

How to Celebrate Pigeon Appreciation Day

It is very easy to celebrate and participate in Pigeon Appreciation Day:

  • Feed the birds. According to Mary Poppins, it just tuppence a bag.
  •  Attend a pigeon show or race.
  • Learn more about pigeons.
  • Take pictures of them.
  • Give your support and donations to animal rights and protection groups, and especially those that help birds of all kinds.
  • Do your best to protect the habitat of pigeons and other birds.
  • Grade schoolteachers can teach their class about pigeons and have the students draw pictures of them in art class.
  • Keep a pigeon as a pet.

Today's Quote

“Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.” – – A. A. Milne

History and Origin of Pigeon Appreciation Day

Dan Richardson of  Pigeonpedia says his organization sponsors and promotes this holiday. But they are not the creators of the holiday which we celebrate and enjoy around the world. Pigeonpedia is passionate in its defense and support for pigeons. Richardson says “I think it’s good to remember all animals and the difference they make to society. Pigeons are often overlooked but they are wonderfully intelligent birds.”

The date was selected because the famous WWI homing pigeon “Cher Ami” died on June 13, 1919. As previously described, Cher Ami was directly responsible for saving 194 American lives. That’s a good reason to celebrate this holiday. It is not known when this holiday began.

Some internet websites have begun to call this “National Pigeon Day”. Richardson says he prefers the original title of this day as Pigeon Appreciation Day, as they are underappreciated.

About World Chipmunk Day

When is World Chipmunk Day? This holiday is always celebrated on March 22

Today is World Chipmunk Day.  On this March 22 holiday, people in many parts of the country see these lovable striped creatures as they emerge from their winter hibernation with the warming rays of the spring sun. After a long hibernation in their underground burrow or den, Chipmunks emerge hungry and are especially active. People are fascinated as these cute little furry creatures scurry around in search of food. They are friendly, too. With a little patience, they will feed out of your hand. That’s a real thrill.

Do you love chipmunks and enjoy watching them frolic around your bird feeder in search of a free meal? If so, you love at least one variety of rodents. They are the smallest member of the squirrel family. They are primarily found in North America. Chipmunks can be found in forests, plains, deserts, and mountainous regions. Chances are they reside in a park or your backyard where you can sit on your deck and watch them. However, you won’t see them in groups, as they live solitary lives, coming together only to mate.

Breakfast in Bed Day

Lovers. When is Breakfast in Bed Day?

About Breakfast in Bed Day

When is Breakfast in Bed Day? This holiday is observed on the fourth Saturday in September

Today is Breakfast in Bed Day. Start the day off right and don’t get up for breakfast. The object today’s holiday is to begin it in a casual and leisurely manner. It sets the tone for how you go about the entire day. Americans lead fast and hectic lives. And Saturdays are often the busiest of them all as we get the kids to and from sports programs, do grocery shopping, and attend to a myriad of chores at home. We are so busy most days that we might not even take the time for breakfast. We grab a cup of coffee and are on our way. This holiday is designed to slow it down for just one day to stop and smell the bacon.

On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, children often serve their parents breakfast in bed. Today everybody gets in the act. We suggest you begin by sleeping in a little. First, don’t set the alarm clock. Next, get someone to bring into your room a tray of pancakes and sausage or your favorite morning fare on a silver platter. If you live alone, quickly hop out of bed, grab a cup of coffee and some bagels or a donut. Then, hop back into bed and chow down.

Breakfast in Bed is Fun and Enjoyable

The object of this holiday is for everyone to wake up to a fun and relaxing breakfast before they get up to start the day. Ideally, there is someone in the house to make breakfast for you today and serve it on a tray as you arise. Won’t the kids be surprised when you enter their bedroom carrying a tray with their favorite cereal and some juice. Kids can bring their parents toast and jelly just like they do on Mother’s and Father’s Day. For couples, the one who wakes up first can make breakfast, and then hop back into bed with two trays containing coffee and “the works”. Or, they both can get up and make breakfast together, and then return to bed to eat it. You never know what kind of frolicking and fun activity that can lead to.

Now that you’ve enjoyed a relaxing, stress-free Breakfast in Bed Day, you still have the whole day left as you arise in a happier, more relaxed manner. You are better prepared to face the hectic day. Or better still, continue to relax and enjoy a beautiful early fall day.

How to Celebrate Breakfast in Bed Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate Breakfast in Bed Day:

  • It’s easy, just have breakfast in bed.
  • Let someone serve you coffee along with eggs, toast, and bacon as soon as you wake up.
  • Make breakfast for someone else and serve it to them while they are still in bed.
  • Buy some pastries, bagels, or donuts the night before so you won’t have to get up and spend time making anything.
  • Of course, if you can’t have breakfast in bed, how about lunch or dinner!?

Today's Chuckle

“I’m so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark.” – – Muhammad Ali

History and Origin of Breakfast in Bed Day

In 2023, Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of HolidayInsights.com created this pleasant and relaxing day. Matthews says we lead busy lives, normally hopping out of bed and on the go all day long. This holiday encourages us to take a break by starting with a leisurely breakfast in bed. This will set the tone for the day and it will be a far more pleasurable day.

A late September Saturday morning was selected as summer is over and people are “moving indoors”. The hectic holidays are still months away. So, Matthews says it just seems like a good time to have a leisurely Saturday and what better way to start it off, than breakfast in bed?

National Dimples Day

Dimples Day. When is National Dimples Day? July 9 Holidays. gelasin

About National Dimples Day

When is National Dimples Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 9

Do you have Gelasin?  They are an indentation or a depression in your skin, most often on the cheeks of your face. If you have gelasin, then you will thoroughly enjoy National Dimples Day. Otherwise known as Dimples, this July 9 holiday is a cause for celebration for people with gelasin. Only a small percentage of the population is lucky enough to have them.

People who have dimples are considered lucky. As a matter of fact, in Chinese culture, they are a sign of good luck. Babies with dimples are cute. Women with dimples are considered beautiful. And men who have them are handsome. They are also a sign of heroism and innocence. So, if you have them, smile as they are visible when smiling.

Gelasin are fashionable. They never seem to go out of style. Dimples are so desirable that in 1936, Isabella Gilbert invented a dimple maker. She applies for a patent on October 6, 1936. The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent #104345A on August 31, 1937.

Today’s Mascot: Dimples the Clown

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Dimples Day

There are many things you can do to celebrate this holiday. Here are a few ideas:

  • Celebrate the ones you have.
  • Smile as often as possible to display your attractive gelasin(s).
  • Consciously look for them in others. Then, compliment people who have them.
  • Take pictures of them.
  • Find out if you have back dimples. Many people have no idea.
  • Hold a beauty contest, judged solely on the cutest dimple(s).
  • If you don’t have them, consider a Dimpleplasty procedure.
  • Learn about Dimples the Clown.

Did You know? If you have a burning desire to have cute dimples on your face, you can have an outpatient procedure called “Dimpleplasty”. You’re going to look so cute!

About Dimples

Gelasin are not too common. Only 20- 30 % of people around the world have them. Scientists disagree whether they are genetic, a birth defect, or just a random occurrence. They are a natural indentation of the skin. They are formed by a defect or variation in the zygomaticus major muscle. This muscle controls facial expression. Cheek dimples are the most common and are visible when smiling.

People who have them usually have two, one on each side of the face. In rare occurrences, it is on just one side of the face. They also may appear in the corners of the mouth. Some people have a dimple or chin cleft. And, they can occur on the lower back. They are called “Dimples of Venus”. Venus is the Roman goddess of beauty, love, and sexual desire. Women who have this are considered very beautiful.  For men with them on their lower back, it is called “Dimples of Apollo”. Apollo is the ancient Roman sun god.

History and Origin of National Dimples Day

Graceful Grady from Atlanta, GA. is the founder and Chief Dimples Officer of National Dimples Day LLC. This fun-filled holiday was created in 2022. After hearing about all kinds of daily holidays in the media and from friends, Grady searched the internet for a holiday to celebrate dimples. Unable to find one, Grady created this fun holiday.

According to their website, the goal of this holiday is to “spread the word and celebrate globally the rarity”. In that sense, we are surprised this day is not called World Dimples Day.

Graceful Grady selected July 9 “because I wanted a day where we didn’t have to share it with multiple holidays, I definitely wanted it doing the summer but after the 4th of July and before Labor Day, and a day where all dimples can be displayed…including Dimples of Venus and Dimples of Apollo. July 9th was perfect.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is so important to distinguish and identify true national days.

Oxymoron Day

Sunset Week

About Oxymoron Day

When is Oxymoron Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 13

Today is a rather inane holiday. It’s Oxymoron Day. On this July 13 Holiday, we celebrate and use contradictory terms that we use in everyday language without giving it a second thought. And we clarify the definition of oxymoron.  Oxymorons are so common that we hear and speak them, yet don’t even think about the fact that when the words are used together, they don’t make sense. For example, you might say this summer weather is awfully good. Really!? Does this statement mean the weather is awful? Or, is the weather good? When describing our drive home from work, we might say the traffic was terrific. In actuality, we might be describing a long commute with traffic jams and detours.

On Oxymoron Day we raise awareness of the use of these idiosyncrasies in our daily language. Listen for them in the things you say and read. You might be amazed at how many oxymorons you hear each day. Listen for the odd and quirky way combinations of wards can be interpreted. For example can you think of more than one meaning for the term “baby sitter”? If the answer is yes, you are going to have a lot of fun celebrating and participating in Oxymoron Day.

Definition of an Oxymoron

Here’s the definition of oxymoron:

An oxymoron is a figure of speech or a combination of words when spoken or written together are incongruous, contradictory, or non-sensical. The verb form of the word is oxymoronic. the adverb form is oxymoronically.

List of Oxymorons

There are many, perhaps countless oxymorons. Here are some of them:

  • Working Vacation- one of my favorites
  • unbiased opinion
  • Climb down
  • Military Intelligence
  • Senate Intelligence Committee
  • Time Management –  Time never stops or even slows down.
  •  Hospital Food – is it even edible?
  • Awfully good
  • Traffic is terrific.
  • I hope the snow keeps up. – Then it won’t come down, right!?
  • Civil War
  • Holy War
  • icy hot
  • one-man band
  • good grief – One of Charlie Brown’s favorites
  • grow smaller
  • deceptively honest
  • found missing
  • lead balloon
  • pretty ugly
  • same difference
  • freezer burn
  • wise fool
  • minor crisis

….. And the list goes on, and on.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Oxymoron Day

Here are some ideas on how you can enjoy Oxymoron Day:

  • If you here someone say an oxymoron, point it out to them.
  • Include as many oxymorons in your speech and writing today. See if anyone notices them for what they are.
  • Create or identify oxymoron.

History and Origin of Tender Loving Care Day

The Senior Community TLC Support Group in Hemet, CA. created this caring holiday in 2022. Tender Loving Care Day was created to “highlight the importance of providing special attention to those in need.” It also encourages action to address these needs. While the focus is on assisting seniors, this holiday also strives to help anyone in need. This TLC Support group has seen first-hand how important this support can be. They realize that it is worthwhile if more people are aware of what they can do to help. That’s why they created this holiday.

The authors of Tender Loving Care Day chose the date because it didn’t conflict with other holidays, and was in the Fall, but not too close to Thanksgiving or Christmas.

  • English pubs sell ale by pints and quarts. When customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at patrons to mind their own pints and quarts, and to calm down. Over time Bartenders shortened this expression to “mind your P’s and Q’s”.
  • British men have been found twice as likely to know the price of their beer as their partner’s bra size.
