National Amelia Earhart Day

Airplane, Amelia Earhart Day

About National Amelia Earhart Day

When is National Amelia Earhart Day? There are two holidays, one on May 20, and the second on July 24.

Amelia Earhart Day honors a famous aviation pioneer. Amelia Earhart broke many early aviation records. There are two dates to celebrate this day. The U.S. Congress and then-President Ronald Reagan declared the holiday on May 20. There are few details around the creation of the second date on second July 24. We suggest you celebrate them both.

Legend and mystery surround the final flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. They were on a record-setting attempt to fly around the world when they became lost in the Pacific Ocean. On July 2, 1937, they headed on a difficult leg of the journey toward Howell Island in the Pacific. Weather conditions were less than ideal. While still in radio communication, ships on the ground confirmed that Earhart was having difficulty finding the island. Ultimately, radio communications faded and died. The plane was never heard from again.

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart’s plane resulted in the largest search and rescue operation to date. It also sparked rumors as to what caused the disappearance. To this day, theories and speculation still exist about the cause of the disappearance. Some theories involve conspiracies and even alien abductions.

Did you Know? The proper spelling of her name is Amelia. It was misspelled in a song about her and is now the more popular, albeit incorrect,  spelling of her name.

About the Airplane: The airplane Amelia Earhart flew on her fateful journey, was a Lockheed Model 10 Electra. It was best known as “The Flying Laboratory”.

Celebrate this holiday by learning and reading about Amelia Earhart, and other female aviators. We do not recommend you spend time searching for her or her plane. The U.S. Navy searched over 250,000 miles of ocean to no avail.

History and Origin of National Amelia Earhart Day

There are two dates for this holiday. Rather, than proclaim one to be the true date and discount the other, let’s celebrate Amelia Earhart on both days!

National Emelia Earhart Day May 20 is a true national day. On May 20, 1982, joint resolution HJ Res. 4943 authorized then-President Ronald Reagan to declare May 20 as Amelia Earhart Day. President Reagan issued Presidential Proclamation 4943 announcing this day.

The holiday held on July 24 celebrates the birth of Amelia Earhart on July 24, 1897. We did not find the creator of this second day, nor did we find any other information about its creation.

International Bikini Day

When is International Bikini Day? National Days. Spooner's Day, Spoonerism

About International Bikini Day

When is International Bikini Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 5

On July 5, 1946, the first Bikini was worn and modeled. That makes this a very special day, International Bikini Day, a July 5 holiday. Oddly, it is also sometimes referred to as National Bikini Day, but they did not originate in the U.S., At that time, conservative Americans largely shunned them until the 1960s. Perhaps the word “national” refers to France, where they were first modeled.

The Bikini is worn by millions of ladies, from very young girls, to not-so-young ladies. Hard to believe, there are a few ladies in their 80s who wear them!

Gentlemen………….  Today is an absolutely beautiful day. Go out and take in the stunning scenery. But, by all means, be gentlemen!

History of the Bikini

Two-piece bathing suits were around long before 1946. They covered most of the body and showed only a little midriff. In the 1940s, people called a good-looking woman a “Bombshell”. Some called them “Nuclear”.

There were two French clothing designers of two-piece bathing suits. One bathing suit was called the “Atome”, and the other was called “Bikini”. Both bathing suits were in reference to Bikini Island, where the United States tested atomic bombs. The name Bikini won out.

This two-piece bathing suit was first modeled on July 5, 1946, at the Piscine Molitor Swimming Pool in Paris, France. French Designer Louis Reard could not get models to wear the”indecent” bathing suits” at the show. So, he turned to a showgirl, Micheline Bernardini.

The first bikini used just 30 square inches of fabric. Since then, the amount of coverage has continually shrunk.

A woman can look great in a bikini. But a word of caution: bikini waxing is a rip off ! (tehee!)

Famous Bikini Wearers

  • Raquel Welch has honors for the most famous bikini shot in One Million Years B.C.
  • Ursula Andress in Dr. No
  • Bridget Bardot on the beach at St. Tropez during the 1953 Cannes Film Festival
  • Bo Derek in the movie “10”
  • Princess Leia wore a metal bikini in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
  • Halle Berry was a Bond Girl in Die Hard with Pierce Brosnan as James Bond.
  • Marilyn Monroe in any one of several bikini pictures.
  • Goldie Hawn in the television comedy show Laugh-In

International Bikini Day Trivia

  • Bikinis are memorialized in song: Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini
  • Movies have been made immortalizing these skimpy two-piece bathing suits: How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, with Annette Funnicello
  • The world’s largest bikini parade was held in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 9, 2009, It included 287 bikini-clad girls.
  • The world’s largest bikini photo was in Sydney, Australia. It included 1,010 girls on September 25, 2001.
  • Ancient Minoan paintings, circa 1600 B.C., show women in a two-piece bathing suit similar to bikinis.
  • St. Tropez claims to be the bikini-posing capital of the world.
  • They are banned in Muslim countries.

How to Celebrate in International Bikini Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this gorgeous holiday:

  • Ladies…….put on your bikini and get out in the sun. While poolside or at the beach is most desired, it is not a requirement.
  • Buy your first one, or a new one.
  • Guys, you have just one task today. Tastefully and politely appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the women who wear them.

Thought for Today

When women wear a bikini, they reveal 90% of their body. Men are so polite, they only look at the covered parts.

Bikini Woman. When is International Bikini Day? July 5 holidays.

History and Origin of International Bikini Day

It is clear that this day marks the modeling of the first bikini. Our research has not revealed who declared this a special holiday. We are glad they created it. It is truly an international day, as they are worn around the world.

For those who call this National Bikini Day, it is not a true “National” day. Neither the U.S. Congress, nor the President of the United States has proclaimed today a national day. Recognizing that the bikini originated from French designers, it is possible that this day originated as a National day of France. But, we found nothing to support this theory.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it so important to distinguish and identify true national days.

About Teddy Bear Picnic Day

When is Teddy Bear Picnic Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 10

Almost everyone had a teddy bear during their childhood. And while you might not admit it, you might still have him. Everybody loves their teddy bear and loves to spend time with him. It’s Teddy Bear Picnic Day and you can spend all day with him. Here’s a fun summer day, that all the kids and many adults will enjoy. Mom and dad are certain to enjoy it, too, as it will keep the kids occupied for at least a little while. Spend the lunch hour on a blanket under a shade tree with your favorite Teddy Bear.

Stuffed Teddy Bears are a kid’s favorite. Children receive Teddy Bears early in their childhood. Children cling to them throughout their teenage years. Many bears are kept, even as you become an adult. As you read this article, many of you adults know exactly where your Teddy Bear is.

The Origin of the Teddy Bear

During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President of the United States. He was a hunter. While hunting in Mississippi in 1902, he refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up on this story and made a cartoon of the event. Toy store owners, Morris, and Rose Michtom, wrote to President Roosevelt for permission to call their stuffed animals “Teddy Bears”. Teddy bears became wildly popular. Their company went on to become the Ideal Toy Company, one of the largest toy companies in the world.

When is National Hot Dog Day? National July Daily Holidays

When is National Hot Dog Day? This holiday is celebrated on the third Wednesday in July

When is National Hot Dog Day you ask? Why, it’s today. Hot diggety dog! On this date, we celebrate one of America’s favorite summer sandwiches. It is only fitting that every dog has its’ day.

Its summertime. Hot dogs are center stage on the grill, and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. It’s not hard to find them. We consume hundreds of millions of hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone.

Enjoy National Hot Dog Day to the fullest. Have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner. And, don’t forget to cook a few on a stick at the evening campfire.

What’s in a hot dog? Don’t ask, and we won’t tell. It’s a sausage, and that’s all we will say. Sometimes, it’s better if you don’t know.

Did You Know? Hot dogs outsell hamburgers at ballparks. The companion for  National Hot Dog Day is National Mustard Day

How Many Hot Dogs Do We Eat?

We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone.

We found no statistics about how many chili dogs are consumed annually by Americans. It is a small fraction of the estimated 70 hot dogs each American will eat in a year.

How to Celebrate National Hot Dog Day

Like other food holidays, it’s easy to celebrate National Hot Dog Day.

History and Origin of National Hot Dog Day

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council created this day and holds an annual hot dog lunch in Washington, DC. They established this special holiday on the third Wednesday of the month.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

But, we firmly believe that there should be a national day for America’s Hot Dog!

About National Tequila Day

When is National Tequila Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 24

National Tequila Day is today, a July 24 holiday. This drink is strong and potent. You can’t drink too many before you really feel its effects. It is made from the distilled sap of the succulent Blue Agave plant. Importantly, not just any agave plant will do. It must be specifically from the Blue Agave plant. As you enjoy a margarita, or a shot or two of tequila today, review our Tequila trivia (below). And, take a moment to be thankful for the blue agave plant.

Agave plants can be grown in any hot, arid area. By Mexican law, Tequila can only be made from the Blue Agave plant grown specifically in and around Tequila, Mexico, and a few select areas nearby. To meet the demand for this liquor, over 300 million plants are harvested a year!

The word “Tequila” has its roots in the Arabic word “Thaquila”, which means heavy and strong.

One Tequila, two Tequila, three Tequila, floor. Lift your Margarita or shot glass in celebration of National Tequila Day!

Thought for the Day: Take life with a grain of salt, plus a slice of lemon and a shot of tequila.

Remember to drink responsibly.

About International Tiger Day

When is International Tiger Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 29

Today we celebrate International Tiger Day, also called World or Global Tiger Day, a July 29 holiday. This day celebrates tigers, the largest cat on the planet. Tigers are arguably the most beautiful and majestic cats on the planet, too. Love ’em, hate ’em, or just plain scared of them, one must admit that they are indeed a beautiful animal. Unfortunately, their numbers are dwindling at an alarming rate and they are an endangered species.

In 2010, at an International Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the plight of wild tigers came into full focus. 13 tiger range countries were in attendance. 2010 was the Asian calendar’s “Year of the Tiger”. Over the last century, the world-wild tiger population dropped by 97% (not including tigers in zoos). With only an estimated 5,000 tigers left in the wild, they are on the brink of extinction. Drastic population loss was due to several factors, among them were hunting, poaching, and loss of habitat. The 13 countries in attendance set a goal to double the number of tigers in their country before the next “Year of the Tiger> (12 years later or 2022). This international group also seeks to raise awareness of the plight of the tiger and to protect and expand their habitat. Their goals and endeavors are a joint international effort.

For the 13 countries that attended the 2010 summit in Russia, this is a huge day. They are committed to increasing the number of tigers in their country. And, they actively pursue improving tiger conservation and habitat. The countries use this day to celebrate their success in these aims.  Also, they seek to increase education and awareness.

Did You Know? Tigers have striped fur and striped skin.

America’s Favorite Tigers: Tony the Tiger and Winnie the Poo’s friend Tigger.

How to Celebrate International Tiger Day

There are many things you can do to celebrate this special day and help this endangered species. Here are a few ideas:

  • Read up about tigers and their loss of population.
  • Show your support of groups working to raise awareness and improve their habitat.
  • Go to the zoo and see these majestic creatures.
  • Watch a documentary about them.
  • Make plans to go on a safari, to see tigers in their native habitat.
  • Donate to the cause.

International Tiger Day originated in 2010. It was founded at an International Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia. There are several sponsors, including the World Wildlife Federation.

This is truly an “International” day. The plight of the tiger, and efforts to grow its population in the wild, are supported by many countries and international groups.

The ladies wanted to participate in the singing fun and enjoyment. On that evening, the “Sweet Adelines” were born. The group later became Sweet Adelines International., which now boasts hundreds of groups and thousands for members.

Today is a great day to listen to barbershop music. Better still, join a Barbershop Quartet, or the Sweet Adelines.

Neither congress nor the President of the United States has proclaimed a national day for postal workers. Postal workers do not get this day off. Let’s change that. Write your local congressman and the President of the U.S., to voice your support for National Postal Worker Day.

Less information is available on National Postal Worker Day in the U.K. Similar to the U.S., we did not find any proclamation from the U.K. government or the queen mum.
