Today is National Ice Cream Soda Day., a July 20 holiday. These sadas are a real summertime treat. Enjoying one is a great way to cool down during the Dog Days of Summer. But, don’t limit your consumption of this frothy drink to just the summer months. They can and should be enjoyed every month of the year. 

This summertime treat was first made in 1874 by Robert Green, a vendor at the Philadelphia Jamboree celebrating the city’s 150 anniversary. He ran out of ice and began to put a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream into the sodas he served. He later claimed the idea came to him in a dream. Regardless of which story caused him to put ice cream into a glass of soda, we are so glad he did!

Did You Know? There is only one person in the entire world who has the following words engraved on his tombstone ” Originator of Ice Cream Sodas”. And, you guessed it, he’s Robert Green.

There are two objectives for this special holiday. The first goal for today is to treat yourself and your family to some nitrogen ice cream. For many people, this will be the first time they have enjoyed it. While the price is higher than conventionally made ice cream, the experience is well worth the price. The second objective of this day is to commemorate and honor Gustav Robert Paalen, who received a patent for a double-walled vessel on July 13, 1909. Why is this important? The double-walled vessel is required for making nitrogen ice cream.  

Many people don’t know what nitrogen ice cream is. The process of using nitrogen differs from other traditional ice cream making processes. The nitrogen is so cold, that it will flash freeze the ingredients. The resulting ice crystals are tiny, making the taste smooth and creamy. It can be made using any of the same ingredients and flavors used in traditional ice cream making processes.    

Now that this frosty day has arrived, you will have to do a little research. Only a limited number of ice cream shops and restaurants offer nitrogen ice cream.

They always had 28 flavors in stock (hopefully) at a time. Those 28 flavors are just the tip of the iceberg. The combinations are seemingly endless.
