About National Paste Up Day

When is National Paste Up Day? This day is always held on May 7

Today is National Paste Up Day. Sometimes called International Paste-Up Day, this holiday is always celebrated on May 7. Before the advent of computers and software programs, paste-up artists, also called layout artists, performed the task of preparing copy for printing presses.

Like any other industry, technology evolves, changing work processes and tasks. As computers and software programs evolved, the paste-up task in printed media disappeared. One might think that glue, paste, and other similar items like correction tape and white-out would also disappear. However, there still are uses for all of these items. Some are readily available in stores.

Clearly, this holiday was originally intended to recognize and celebrate the importance of paste-up artists or layout artists. And the importance of their role in published media should never be forgotten. However as previously stated, this position was eliminated with the arrival of computer software programs and technology. So, we suggest this holiday be extended to include school art projects where students still glue cutouts images, and even text onto construction paper for art projects. As the children work on their project, teachers can educate them about the role of paste-up artists and the history of preparing media for printing.

The History of Layout and Paste-Up Artists

Early Man’s first attempt at written communication with other humans was charcoal drawings of images on cave walls. Fast forward eons later, and we find Man writing on stone tablets and papyrus. Then, many more centuries later, Johann Gutenberg created the first printing press in 1455. And in 1621, we see the first newspaper published in Britain. From there, the printing industry grew in leaps and bounds. To prepare material for the presses, a paste-up artist, also called a “layout artist”, was required to fit and glue or affix text articles and images onto a sheet for the presses.

The position of paste-up artist was necessary from the time printing presses were invented until technology evolved and brought us computers and related software in the early 1990s. The new technology eliminated this position. Now, the process of layout and preparation of copies for printing newspapers, periodicals, magazines, and any printed project is easily performed using a software program on the computer. Moving text and images around is a simple task on the latest software programs. On occasion, you might still see a paste-up task in an office setting or an at-home project. But, even these are largely done with easy-to-use software programs.

How to Participate in National Paste Up Day

You can celebrate National Paste Up Day in a variety of ways:

  • Learn more about the printing industry before computers existed.
  • Learn more about the layout artist or paste-up artist job position.
  • Be a layout artist for a day. Make a one-page flyer by gluing texts and images onto a piece of paper.
  • Teachers, do an art project with your class today using cutouts glued to construction paper. Enlighten children about the layout artist’s job before computers. Think about the printing process as you read your newspaper or other periodicals.
  • Visit a museum that has old-fashioned printing presses.

History and Origin of National Paste Up Day

Paste Up Day was first celebrated somewhere during the 1920s to 1930s. At the time, the paste-up artist function was required in the printing business. Our research has not yet identified who created this holiday. Much later, it became known as National Paste Up Day

This day is called a “National” day. We did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

National Paper Airplane Day

National Paper Airplane Day, May 26

About National Paper Airplane Day

When is National Paper Airplane Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 26

Today is going to be a fun day. This holiday is not about promoting a cause. It’s not a commemoration of an event, good or bad. Rather, National Paper Airplane Day is a day to play with a child’s toy and just have fun. On this May 26 holiday, people of all ages celebrate by making, decorating, and playing with paper airplanes. This holiday is Wendell and Oliver Wright approved. And, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they flew them at Kitty Hawk before they made their infamous flight.

It’s child’s play. Let’s all be kids again and make a plane out of paper. If you’re an adult, you’d probably admit to flying them around the home or in the office. Need to send a message to the boss? Forget sending it via email or in a text today. Instead, write it on a sheet of paper. Then fold it into an airplane and send the message to him via airmail straight into his office. It just might get his attention faster than sending the message in a text. In any case, it’s bound to get some kind of reaction from him.

People have been making and flying these aeronautical gliders for hundreds of years. Kids love them, and adults love them, too. But, it’s not all for play. Flying paper airplanes is a competitive activity with competitions held around the world to see who has the best design to fly them faster, higher, and longer. So, grab a few sheets of paper, and let’s go flying!

The History of Paper Airplanes

It all began in the year 105 when paper was invented in China. Paper would revolutionize the world. Man no longer needed to write history on the walls of caves. It is used for so many things, including newspapers to keep us up to date on current events, books to teach and entertain us, greeting cards, art projects, and paper to send each other messages. We make wallpaper to decorate our homes. And of course, it is used to make paper airplanes.

Paper kites were invented somewhere between 200 – 250. But, paper airplanes would not be invented until many centuries later. It is not known who invented the paper airplane or exactly when it was invented. In 1859, a book for kids contained instructions on how to fold paper to make a “paper dart”. Then in 1873, the term “paper airplane: replaced the word “paper dart.

Since its invention, kids and adults have been making them and having loads of fun. From a simple design in the 1800s, creative minds have come up with 50 designs.  We decorate them too, using colored pencils, crayons, decals and stickers.

For the Record

We all love to fly our paper airplanes to see how far they will fly and how long it stays in the air. We do it for fun. But, for some of us, it is a serious, record-setting endeavor.

Guinness World Records:

Longest Time in the Air: On December 19, 2010, Takuo Toda from Japan set the record at 29.2 seconds in the air.

Longest Distance: In February 2102 Joe Ayob from California, flew a paper airplane a record 226′ 10″. Joe was a former college quarterback. Did that help him to set the world record? Possibly. The plane was constructed by John Collins.

Highest Altitude: On June 24, 2015, David Green flew a paper airplane from a record-high altitude of 114,970.5 feet.

Largest Plane: On September 28, 2013, students and employees at the Braunschweig Institute of Technology in Braunschweig, Germany launched the biggest paper airplane ever. The plane had a wingspan of 59.7 feet.

How to Celebrate National Paper Airplane Day

Here are a few fun ways to participate in and celebrate National Paper Airplane Day:

  • Fly your paper airplane.
  • Begin by folding a piece of paper into your favorite paper airplane design. Create a new design. As previously mentioned, there currently are over 50 designs.
  • Before you launch it to hopefully soar above the clouds, decorate it.
  • Have a paper airplane party and give prizes for the best design, and best-decorated plane.
  • Grade schoolteachers can have paper airplane-making and decorating projects in art class.
  • Have a contest to see who can fly it the farthest and for the longest airtime.

National Mimosa Day

Mimosa Day, National Hangover Day. January 1 holidays

About National Mimosa Day

When is National Mimosa Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 16

Are you looking for an excuse to drink before noon? Have a Mimosa. Here’s a great way to start the day. A little orange juice mixed with some bubbly wakes you up in a pleasant way. Now, don’t you think every day should be National Mimosa Day? Are you going to a brunch on this May 16 holiday? Mimosas are certain to be on the menu. Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s compete for the title of the official brunch drink.

People commonly associate Mimosas with brunch. Yes, it is almost always available at a brunch. However, you can enjoy it at any meal and any time of the day or night. As for events, it is popular at many parties and celebrations, especially bridal showers. You can enjoy Mimosas at spas and some nail salons, too.

There is speculation that the drink got its name from the Mimosa plant in Australia. While this can easily be the case, there is no known direct link between the plant and the drink.

Did You Know? Orange juice is the most popular fruit juice in the world.

Who Created Mimosas?

The roots of this drink go back to a drink simply named “Champagne Orange”, which was consumed in French wine country long before the first Mimosa was poured into a flute glass. Mimosas date back to the 1920s. It was created at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Paris, French in 1925. In 1936, bartender Frank Meier was the first to publish the recipe in the book “The Art of Mixing Drinks”. British royalty popularized this drink when they brought it back from a trip to France. After quickly gaining popularity in England, this summer cooler became popular around the world.

Did You Know?  In 1921, Buck’s Fizz was created at London’s Buck Club. It is the predecessor to the Mimosa.

How to Make a Mimosa

The classic mimosa is made of equal parts of orange juice and champagne. It is typically served in a champagne flute. You can garnish it with a piece of fruit on the rim, like strawberry or a slice of kiwi or lemon. Or, add a couple of blueberries, raspberries, or other fruit into the drink. Also, you can decorate the glass with a sprig of mint leaves.

Try a variation of the Mimosa. Make a Bellini using peach juice instead of orange juice. Pineapple or other fruit juices can be substituted as well.

To make a non-alcoholic drink, simply substitute ginger ale instead of champagne.

Mimosa Trivia and Fun Facts

As you enjoy a mimosa or two at brunch, take a few minutes to learn a little mimosa trivia and fun facts.

  • It is very easy to make. Just mix together orange juice and champagne. Mimosas are mood boosters. C’mon, is anyone surprised that an alcoholic beverage boosts your mood!?
  • Mimosa is named after the Australian Mimosa flower. It is a bright and cheerful yellow flower with delicate petals.
  • Thanks to the orange juice, it is high in healthy vitamin C.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Mimosa Day

Here are some ways to participate in National Mimosa Day:

  • Go to a brunch at a restaurant and order a Mimosa. Hold a brunch at your house. Invite family or guests. Offer Mimosas to the adults.
  • Make Virgin Mimosas for your kids.
  • Have it as a dinner cocktail.
  • Enjoy it as a mid-day cooler.
  • Make a Bellini or any other variant of this drink.

Today's Quote

“I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.” – – Dean Martin

History and Origin of National Mimosa Day

Amazingly, little is known about the actual origin of this holiday. Our research has not identified the creator of this day or the reason he or she created it. Nor, do we know the reasoning behind the selection of this date. Was the creator a little too tipsy to document this day? Perhaps we will never know.

This is referred to as a “National” day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

History and Origin of Hanging Flower Baskets Day

In 2023, Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of HolidayInsights.com created Hanging Flower Baskets Day. The objective of this day is to make the world a little more beautiful by hanging brightly blooming flower baskets around your home, and your place of work. The sale of hanging flower planters peaks during the month of May.

The date of the Saturday before Mother’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate this holiday. They are a hugely popular gift for moms. As a result, garden stores are filled with every imaginable color, size, and shape of flower planters. And, this is the perfect time of the year to put them outdoors. So, while you are buying flower planters for Mom, get a few for your home, too.

How to Care for Hanging Flower Planters

Caring for hanging flower planters is not difficult. However, it requires frequent attention. Hanging under the eaves of your house, the planter does not benefit from summer rain. It dries out quickly, especially in hot and humid weather. Daily watering may be needed during heat spells.

Also, there is a limited amount of soil in the planter that does not have sufficient nutrients to feed the plants all season long. So, additional fertilizer is required every 2 – 3 weeks to keep the plant vibrantly blooming. Use liquid fertilizer or plant fertilizer spikes.

Deadhead spent blooms as soon as they die off. this Promotes new blooms. More on deadheading flowers.

Remove any dead or unsightly leaves. Give the plants a trim, if needed.

The Evolution of "An Apple a Day..."

Today’s favorite saying is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This saying has a long history and the wording evolved. The saying alludes to the health benefits of eating them.

It all began in England in the 1860s. At the time, the original saying was “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” While this quickly became a popular saying, the author is unknown. Over the years, several variations of this proverb evolved. For example, at times over the years, it read: “An apple a day, no doctor to pay” and “An apple a day sends the doctor away”. It wasn’t until 1922 that the current version of this adage came into use.

Did You Know? Tart apple varieties are the best for baking.

History and Origin of National Apple Pie Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day.  There is very little factual information about this holiday. However, we continue to research this holiday.

We found no documentation of why this date was selected. The date mildly surprised us, as we thought this day would have been on a day during the fall harvest. Perhaps this date was selected as it is the perfect time of year to plant an apple tree or two in your backyard.

We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

World Turtle Day

World Turtle Day

About World Turtle Day

When is World Turtle Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 23

World Turtle Day is an international holiday that was created for two reasons. First, this May 23 holiday is to celebrate and enjoy both turtles and tortoises. Secondly, this day is to educate people about turtles, how to protect them, and how to save their disappearing natural habitat. There is a difference between a turtle versus a tortoise. We will distinguish this difference for you. Read on.

Turtles and tortoises have a long life span. Many species live 35 to 50 years. Some species have been known to live 150-200 years. Some species are carnivores, while others are herbivores. Their populations are decreasing rapidly. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 129 of 300 species of turtles and tortoises are on the endangered species list.

Turtle Trivia: You can tell the gender of a turtle by the noise it makes. Male turtles grunt while females hiss.

Did You Know? There actually are Turtle Festivals! We hope you plan on attending them.

Famous Turtles

The most famous turtles are:

  • The four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello
  • Squirt and Crush from Finding Nemo

What's the difference between and turtle and a tortoise?

Both turtles and tortoises are reptiles, dating back over 200 million years. There are many similarities. But, there is one major difference. A tortoise lives on land. A turtle lives in the water most of the time. Now that you know the difference, I’m sure you realize that the “Turtle” you bought at the pet store and the one you saw in the park or even your backyard, was actually a Tortoise.

Now that you know the difference, no one will complain, if you refer to them as “turtles”, regardless of species.

Turtle Quote: “Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out.” – – James B. Conant

Turtle Trivia

Here is some turtle trivia to amaze your friends with your knowledge.:

  • They are among the longest-lived animals on the planet. Some species can live up to 150 years.
  • The Leatherback Sea Turtle is the largest species. It can grow up to 8 feet and weigh in at over 2,000 pounds.
  • They are cold-blooded.
  • Many turtles can retract their neck and head inside their shell for protection.
  • They cannot get out of their shell it is part of their exoskeleton, their spine.
  • There are four Ninja turtles: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Turtle Day

Here are some ways you can celebrate World Turtle Day:

  • First and foremost, do not buy pet turtles. It only increases demand and can cause a further decrease in their populations.
  • Go to a zoo or nature center that has turtles.
  • Dress up like a turtle. Yes, some people actually will today!
  • Visit an aquarium to see them.
  • Watch a television show or movie with turtles in it. May we suggest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Finding Nemo?

World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day

Vegetables, Eat Veggies. When is World Vegetarian Day? World Food Day? October 16 holidays

About World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day

When is World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 19

As the old saying goes….. “Give a man some vegetables, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to grow a vegetable garden, and you feed his whole family for life!” On World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day, a May 19 holiday, you can begin a hobby that feeds your whole family for a lifetime.

It’s a hungry world. Famine affects millions upon millions of people. If everyone had even a small garden, there would be far fewer people suffering from starvation. For the average person, having a vegetable garden helps to ease the family’s food budget, too. In addition, people who grow some or all of their own vegetables often do so organically, or at least with less of those harmful chemical insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Hmmm? Healthier food for my children? Now, this alone is a great reason to start a vegetable garden today.

It’s a fact! Gardening is rewarding and good for your health. Just plant a garden and see. It is calming, relaxing, and therapeutic. Growing plants is peaceful, too. It is rewarding in many ways. First, it provides food for your table. And, that food is usually done, with less or no harmful chemicals. Ask any gardener and they will tell you the great feeling of accomplishment when the crop ripens, or the flower blooms. Successfully growing something you never tried to grow before, brings another sense of accomplishment.

Plant a Vegetable Garden Almost Anywhere

Looking for ideas on where to plant your first garden? Millions upon millions of people are already gardening in some amazing places. Backyard gardens are what normally come to mind. Urban community gardens also abound. In urban environments, vacant lots are often used (seek permission from the owner first). People grow gardens in containers and pots on balconies, decks, and patios. Apartment rooftops can be a great place for your new garden. For those of us who are space-constrained, vertical gardens can be the solution.

History and Origin of World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day

This holiday day was created in 2019 by Bob Matthews of Rochester, NY. Bob is the owner and author of The Gardener’s NetworkGarden Hobbies, and Pumpkin Nook. Bob is also an avid, lifetime gardener.

World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day was created to help feed ourselves, our family, and a hungry planet, and encourage people to join in the fun hobby of gardening. While this day is intended to create a vegetable garden, Matthews says you can use this day to plant a flower or herb garden, if you prefer. Better still, why not grow all three….. vegetables, flowers, and herbs!?

The date of May 19th was chosen, as the last frost date has passed for almost everyone in the northern hemisphere, where the vast majority of humans live. If the last frost date has not yet occurred in your area, start a few plants indoors today, for transplanting outdoors later.

World Otter Day

About World Otter Day

When is World Otter Day? This holiday is celebrated on the last Wednesday in May

World Otter Day celebrates cute and playful aquatic mammals. This day is intended to raise awareness of the importance of otters to the environment and to make people aware of their declining populations and the reasons why. There are thirteen species of otters. All thirteen species are on the Red List of Endangered species. It is important to know why their numbers are declining, and do what you can to help to stabilize and increase their populations.

Otters are aquatic mammals with webbed feet, making them excellent swimmers. If you’ve ever seen them live in the wild, at a zoo, or on an animal nature show, I’m sure you’ll agree that otters are cute and lovable creatures. Otters are members of the weasel family, and dwell on every continent, except Antarctica and Australia. They can be found in a wide variety of waters, including lakes, ponds, rivers streams, estuaries, as well as marshlands, and wetlands.

Otters spend most of their time in the water. Otters live up to 16 years. They are carnivores. Their diet consists of fish, crawfish, mollusks, frogs, small reptiles, and mammals. A hungry otter will also eat birds, small beavers, and even muskrats. Otters are smart animals. For example, they use small rocks as “tools”, to break open hard shells of clams and other mollusks. Otters make their home by digging holes along riverbanks. They have also been known to make their den under porches and decks, making themselves a nuisance to homeowners.

Did You Know? An otter’s den is called a “Holt” or a “Couch”.

Have a Happy World Otter Day

Otters on the Endangered Species List

With the exception of North America, where their population is fairly stable, otters are decreasing in numbers all around the world. Their numbers have become vulnerable due to several reasons, including:

  • Loss of habitat
  • Pollution of habitat
  • Trapping by humans for their pelts
  • They can be a pest to homeowners along waterways and damaging to businesses like hatcheries and commercial fishponds. They then can fall victim to illegal hunting and trapping.
  • They are sometimes killed by automobiles on roadways.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Otter Day

Over twenty countries around the world celebrate World Otter Day. Here’s how you can celebrate:

  • On this day, nature preservation groups provide educational programs and research. programs to protect otters. Armed with this information, you can do your part to protect otters, and help to preserve their natural habitat.
  • You can also support organizations that strive to do research on otters and influence governmental policies.
  • Find out if otters are at your local zoo. Go and see them.
