As the day of your birth neared, your parents explored different names for you. Upon your birth, they carefully selected a first name, and most often a middle name to give to you.

As parents-in-waiting, we spend countless hours pouring through baby name books. We seek names that sound good, and names that honor someone we love, look up to, or respect. National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day is today. This March 29 holiday celebrates the millions of small business owners that make up the backbone of this country. These individuals spend countless hours nurturing and growing their young enterprises. The workload demands, and lack of a hired staff, often translate into long and late hours, and many missed family and personal events. But, all in all, they love what they do. After all, they are their own boss.

New businesses have always been a vital, yet not fully appreciated, part of the U.S. economy. On the retail side, they bring different and unique products to the marketplace. They provide stellar and personal service support. When you call, you are more likely to get a real, live person. And unlike big national chains, they know their products. They are outstanding performers in niche markets. In manufacturing, they create many new concepts and ideas, making them creators of new products.

With all of the John Does and Jane Does in the world, how do you tell them apart from one another? Why it’s their middle name, of course! Today is Middle Name Pride Day, a March 10 holiday. This day honors the seldom-used middle name that often sets you apart from others. Our parents selected it with care, so you should be proud of it. Some people like it so much, that as adults they use their second name as their official name. A great example of this is F. Scott Fitzgerald. 

Here are two big reasons to be proud of your middle name:

First, there are plenty of John Smiths and Mary Jones. It’s the second name your parents gave you that makes your name unique.

Today is Melba Toast Day. Also called “Toast Marie”, this is a March 23 holiday. But, just what is this crispy toast? And, how did this special day come to be!? Melba toast is a thin, dry slice of bread, that has been toasted to a crisp texture.

It was originally named “Toast Marie” by its creator, famous chef Auguste Excoffier. The name did not stick for long. Famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba, took ill and was on a limited diet, including dry toast. It was quickly renamed Melba Toast and became part of Nellie’s diet while she was ill. There are conflicting dates when this occurred. Most references suggest it was 1897 or 1901.

Make Your Own Holiday Day allows you to make today a special day for anything you want. The objective of this March 26 holiday is to allow one day for any topic or event that has otherwise escaped recognition… up to now. The topic for your special day is seemingly unlimited. “Live Long and Prosper” is a saying from Science Officer and First Officer Spock, a Vulcan aboard the Starship Enterprise on the television series Star Trek. It is derived from the ancient Vulcan blessing: “May you live long and prosper”. Live Long and Prosper Da,y a March 26 holiday, celebrate Spock, and his many Vulcan sayings.

This day encourages us to think about this particular saying, and how we can make our lives happier, healthier, and more prosperous. Today is definitely not a day for “Debbie Downers”. Rather, today is a real laugher. Honest to goodness it’s Let’s Laugh Day and that’s funny. This March 19 holiday is no joke, but it’s certainly a big laugher that’s guaranteed to tickle your innards.    

There are all sorts of laughs. Start with a little tehee while reading the comics in the morning paper. When you pick up your cell phone and go on the internet, look for the jokes and humor on your favorite social media site for a few LOLs. Then, move on to the chuckles, hahas, hohos, giggles, hearty roars, and those deep and resonating belly laughs.

It’s perfectly okay to laugh while no one is around. There’s nothing wrong with that. However, laughter is best enjoyed with others. We suggest you collect an assortment of humorous jokes and share them with everyone you meet. It’s a great way to brighten your day and that those you come in contact with. If you’re not out and about today, make a few phone calls or texts to spread the laughter.

Don’t you wonder what the purpose and goals of this day are? National Joe Day is a chance to change your name, if only for today. Or on this March 27 holiday, you can celebrate people named “Joe”.
