National Missing Children Day

Baby With Rattle. When is Working Parents Day? September 16 holidays. National Adoption Day

When is National Missing Children Day? This day is always held on May 25

National Missing Children Day draws attention to the plight of an estimated 2,300 children that go missing in the United States every day. This day is your chance to play a part in finding missing and exploited children. There are a whole lot of reasons why a child goes missing. And, none of them are good. The only good news is that most missing children are found. Of approximately 500,000 missing children in the United States each year, about 98% of them are found. About half of the missing children are parental abductions.

Having a child go missing is the worst thing that can happen to parents. Unfortunately, child abductions can happen to any child, any family. No one is immune to child predators. We don’t say this to scare you. We say it to help promote awareness and education to help you guard against it.

Did you know? The U.S. Department of Justice estimates more than 50,000 children are victims of non-family abductions annually.

How to Participate in National Missing Children Day

Here’s what you can do to help:

  • Review and enforce child protection and safety awareness regularly with your children.
  • Be ever vigilant.
  • Establish neighborhood watch groups.
  • Become involved.
  • Report anything abnormal or suspicious that you see. Do it immediately.
  • Created and maintain records of your children… photos, fingerprints.

Today's Quote

“There’s nothing wrong with America that can’t be cured by what is right with America.” – – President William Clinton

History and Origin of National Missing Children Day

The roots of National Missing Children’s Day go back to the 1970s and 1980s. Several high-profile child abductions revealed no organized plans and efforts were in place at the time to find missing children. The first case was Etan Patz who disappeared from a New York City street while on his way to school, on May 25, 1979.

In 1983 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25 National Missing Children’s Day. Since then, U.S. presidents have annually marked this day.

National Mint Julep Day

Mint Julep Day, Recipe

When is National Mint Julep Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 30

Today is Mint Julep Day. This May 30 holiday is a day to enjoy and savor this frosty and refreshing classic Southern drink. Perhaps Mint Juleps are best known as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby (1938). Today, over 120,00 Mint Juleps are served at the two-day “Run for the Roses” event.

Mint Julep is a bourbon-based alcoholic beverage. A related version of it uses gin instead of bourbon. It originated and is very popular today in areas south of the Mason-Dixon line in the United States.  The roots of Mint Julep may have Arabic origin, where a similar drink called Julab was made with rose petals. Considered a sign of hospitality, Mint Juleps were first served in the early 1800s on Virginia plantations. It quickly spread in popularity across the south. In 1850, Kentucky Senator Henry Clay introduced it to Washington, D.C., at the Round Robin Bar.

Did You Know: Mint Juleps were used medicinally for stomach maladies and other ailments.

Mint Juleps are a frosty cooler. We suspect the originator of this special day set May 30th as the date to celebrate them, as hot weather has arrived in the south by this time. And, it was wise to give this popular drink its’ own holiday separate from the date of the Kentucky Derby.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Mint Julep Day

How can we celebrate and participate in National Mint Julep Day?

  • Have a mint julep.
  • Better yet, have a mint julep party.
  • Learn more about it.
  • Learn more about the Kentucky Derby.

Did You Know? Derby concessionaires make approximately 125,000 Mint Juleps during the two-day Kentucky Derby event. And, they use 60,000 pounds of ice.

My response is on a memo I just sent back.

Have a pen and paper handy. Go grab a post-it note. Stand ready at your PC. We suggest you enjoy National Memo Day by giving and taking memos wherever and whenever possible.

Note: If we had a say in the creation of this day, we would rename it “National No Memo Day“. Then, your boss and co-workers wouldn’t be burying you with requests that are on those notes. And, think of the extra time you’d have if you didn’t have to write any memos today!

About National Macaroon Day

When is National Macaroon Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 31

National Macaroon Day is today. This May 31 holiday honors the Macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the Macaroon doesn’t stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world.

Macaroons are made from ground nuts and leavened egg whites. Coconut and potato starch is common in Macaroon recipes. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792. While monks are well known for their vows of silence, they just couldn’t keep quiet about this tasty treat.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Macaroon Day

We just love food holidays. We believe you do, too. Here are some ways to celebrate National Macaroon Day.

  • Eat Macaroons!
  • If your schedule is tight today, stop by a bakery to buy some.
  • Bring them to work to share with co-workers.
  • Bake them at home.

Today's Quote

“When you go into court, you are putting your fate into the hands of 12 people who weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty.” – – Norm Crosby

History and Origin of National Macaroon Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Now, that’s very surprising. Someone apparently liked macaroons enough to create a holiday for it. You would think the creator would then take credit and document it.

Apparently, the creator did not seek national recognition. There are no congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

Lumpy Rug Day

About Lumpy Rug Day

When is Lumpy Rug Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 3

Lumpy Rug Day is today. Aren’t you glad this May 3 holiday has come along to brighten up your day!? The objective of Lumpy Rug Day is two-fold. First, we should appreciate a good, high-quality rug. Second, this holiday encourages us to examine our existing rugs. Are they in good shape?  Or, should we consider repairing or replacing them? Additionally, take a good look to see if it needs shampooing.

A good rug should be smooth and even. It should not be lumpy. Many of us stretch out on a rug to watch TV, play games, and even catch 40 winks. If the rug is lumpy, you’ll know it. And, you won’t have a great experience with it.

If you can’t restore it to good shape, it’s time to replace it. There’s nothing better than replacing your old rug with a thick, cozy new rug. You’ll love to sink your toes into it.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Lumpy Rug Day

There are several ways to enjoy Lumpy Rug Day:

  • Find out if the rug can be repaired before tossing it out.
  • If you have a lumpy rug, toss it out and get a nice, lump-less rug.
  • If you once had a lumpy rug, take a minute to remember the soft, comfortable feel of the new rug when it arrived.
  • If you never had a lumpy rug, count your blessings. You don’t know what you’re missing.

Today's Quote

“The upward course of a nation’s history is due in the long run to the soundness of heart of its average men and women.” – – Queen Elizabeth II

History and Origin of Lumpy Rug Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day.

Around 2015 – 2016, some internet websites began calling this holiday National Lumpy Rug Day. There are no congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

About National Loyalty Day

When is National Loyalty Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 1

National Loyalty Day is an opportunity to express and reaffirm our loyalty to our country. In proclaiming this day, President George W. Bush wrote: “We express allegiance to our Nation and its founding ideals, we resolve to ensure that the blessings of liberty endure and extend for generations to come.” This May 1 holiday is a good time for ous to affirm our allegiance and fidelity to our country.

But, this day did not start with George Bush’s proclamation. It dates back to the 1920s.

On Loyalty Day, we reaffirm our allegiance to our country and resolve to uphold the vision of our Forefathers. We should also take a moment to appreciate the members of our armed forces who are displaying the ultimate in loyalty and service to protect our freedoms, liberty, and our way of life.

While this day speaks to loyalty to our nation, we can use this day to express our loyalty to other people, organizations, and causes.

Who is the most loyal? Your dog.

How to Celebrate National Loyalty Day

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in National Loyalty Day:

  • First and foremost, be true to yourself.
  • Affirm your loyalty to your country.
  • Recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Express your loyalty to your spouse, your lover, that special someone, and to your family.
  • Fly the flag.

Today's Quote

Bonus Quote: “This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.” – – Polonius

History and Origin of National Loyalty Day

Loyalty Day was first celebrated in the 1920s. Communism was on the rise and feared in America. At the time, May Day (May 1st) was perceived by some as a Communist holiday. In a sense, Loyalty Day was intended to counter this.

The U.S. Congress made this an official holiday on July 18, 1958, with the signing of Public Law 85-529. Then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, proclaimed May 1, 195,9 the first official observance of National Loyalty Day.

About Hawaiian Lei Day

When is Hawaiian Lei Day? This holiday begins on the morning of May 1 and continues on into the next day.

Hawaiian Lei Day is the Hawaiian version of May Day. This May 1  holiday is a celebration of Hawaiian culture and its people. It’s a fun two-day event, centered around the “lei”, a colorful flowery necklace. The “lei” represents an unspoken expression of “aloha”. While this is a Hawaiian holiday celebration, I’m sure you will admit you want to get lei’d, too. C’mon and join in on the fun. There’s no reason you can’t participate in Hawaiian Lei Day, no matter where you are.

Visitors to Hawaii, by plane, boat, or other means, usually receive a traditional lei upon arrival. Nowadays, they are often made of plastic. On Hawaiian Lei Day, people give and receive leis. You will see pretty much everyone is wearing flowery leis. This is a day of festivities and parades, filled with leis, flowers, parties, dancing, and more. There are lei-making contests, hula dancing, luaus, and even the selection and crowning of the Lei Day Queen.

Did You Know? Each Hawaiian island has its signature lei. For example, the island of Kauai is known for a lei made of fruit. Purple berries, with a sweet scent, are strung onto the necklace.

If you are not in Hawaii, we hope you still participate in Hawaiian Lei Day. Grab your hula skirt. Buy or make leis and give them out. Hold a family or group celebration. Have a pig roast, and don’t forget to serve the poi.

How to Celebrate Hawaiian Lei Day

Make this into the fun-filled day it is intended to be. There are so many ways to celebrate and enjoy International Tiara Day. Need ideas? Here are a few:

  • Make a handmade lei.
  • Give one to someone.
  • Watch a movie with a Hawaiian theme.
  • Dress in traditional Hawaiian clothing.
  • Do a hula dance.
  • Hold a pig roast.

Today's Chuckle

“Someone once asked me what was the weirdest question I was ever asked? I was stymied.” – – Martin Short

History and Origin of Hawaiian Lei Day

Hawaiian Lei Day was first celebrated in 1927. It quickly became an annual event. The state of Hawaii made it an official state holiday in 1929.
