National Clown Day and International Clown Week

International Clown Week

About Clown Day and Clown Week

When is Clown Day and Week? International Clown Week: always August 1 - 7. National Clown Day: Saturday of International Clown Week

Both International Clown Week and National Clown Day were created to give recognition to those funny clowns that make us laugh and smile. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 clowns in organized clown groups, and over 20,000 clowns worldwide. They all have one goal in mind, and that’s to make us happy. You can celebrate just the day, or the whole week. Wwe recommend a week-long celebration.

On this day and week, clowns around the world do what they do best…. they clown around, holding events at malls, nursing homes, schools, and educational events.

Originally, this event was called National Clown Week. In 1991, the group Clowns of America renamed it International Clown Week, recognizing that there are many clowns around the world, and this event should be a worldwide celebration.

Note: This day is not intended for those scary clowns you see in horror movies. If you are afraid of clowns, you suffer from Coulrophobia.

We hope a clown or two brightens up your day, today!

How to Celebrate National Clown Day and International Clown Week

This is a great time for clowning around.  Here are some ways you can join in on the fun:

  • Act like a clown.
  • Dress like one, too.
  • Go to a circus to see the clowns.
  • Go to a parade where they are participating in their little cars.
  • Watch a movie about the circus.

Today's Humorous Quote

“As I hurtled through space, one thought crossed my mind… every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.” – –  John Glenn

History and Origin of National Clown Day and International Clown Week

On October 8, 1970, a joint resolution was passed in Congress (Public Law 91-443), authorizing and requesting the President of the United States to issue a proclamation making August 1-7, 1971, National Clown Week. On August 2, 1971, U.S. President Richard Nixon issued Proclamation 4071, making August 1-7, 1971 National Clown Week.

While the proclamation and resolution cited a specific date and year, this celebration of clowns has occurred at exactly the same time every year. It is always August 1-7.

Note: Some sources incorrectly report  International Clown Week and/or National Clown Day in October. We believe this is because the Congressional resolution was made in October. But, the resolution clearly made it August of the following year (1971)

It is uncertain how and when National Clown Day, came into being.

About Chinese Valentine's Day

When is Chinese Valentine Day? 7th day of 7th Lunar month: August 22, 2022; August 10, 2024; August 29, 2025; August 19, 2026; August 8, 2027

Celebrate love ….Chinese style. Today is Chinese Valentine Day. It is also known as the Daughters Festival and several other names (see below). We celebrate this lovely holiday on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar.

This holiday is one of love. It’s romantic (and lovely) that this holiday evolved from an ancient love story from Chinese folklore. As a result of being handed down from generation to generation over thousands of years, there are several versions of the story.

Heart Throbbing

The Story Behind Chinese Valentine's Day

The Goddess of Heaven (also known as the Queen of Heaven) had seven beautiful, young daughters. The seven daughters came down to earth. They decided to bathe in a pristine river, leaving their clothes on the shore. Along came a cow herder (the herd were actually ox) named “Niu Lang”.  He took their clothes to see what they would do. The daughters decided that the youngest, and most beautiful,  named Zhi Nü should go out of the water and recover their clothes. Because Niu Lang saw her naked, they had to get married. They fell madly in love and shared several years of marital bliss.

Finally, her mother became irritated by her absence from Heaven and ordered her to return. Seeing how much Zhi Nü missed her husband, the Jade Emperor of Heaven brought the couple back together. Ultimately, Zhi Nü is allowed to visit her husband, Niu Lang just once a year. The annual reunion occurs on the 7th day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar.

Confucius Says: Man who leap off a building, jumps to conclusion.

Heart Throbbing

History and Origin of Chinese Valentines Day / Daughters Festival

This holiday is celebrated in China and other parts of Asia. It comes from a Chinese legend that has been handed down for thousands of years. There are several variations of this legend.

Many websites erroneously report this on varying dates in early August. The date is based on the lunar calendar. The lunar year is established based on the sighting of the new moon. Calendar Converters are available online to convert to/from the Julian and Chinese Calendars.

Campfire Day and Campfire Night

Campfire Day

About Campfire Day and Night

When is Campfire Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in August

The first Saturday in August is forever proclaimed to be Campfire Day and Night! Why, day and night, you might ask? It’s simply because a campfire can and should be enjoyed any time, any day or night. Plan your fire so you can cook a meal and/or a snack over it.

Most people start a campfire at or near dusk, to enjoy its warmth and light late into the evening, or even early morning hours. A campfire can be equally enjoyable, without the mosquitos, during daylight hours. Although in mid-summer, it might be too hot to enjoy the fire in the middle of the day. To properly enjoy this holiday, start your campfire around 4:00 in the afternoon. Then, keep it going late into the evening.

This is a very special time to enjoy the relaxing calm and peacefulness of a campfire with family or friends. It can be enjoyed in your backyard, at a campout, by the shore, or just about anywhere that you can build a fire on the ground, or in a firepit.

This holiday is designated for celebration on the first Saturday in August for a couple of reasons. It is celebrated on a Saturday, as most people are off work, and don’t have to work the next day. So, they can stay up late to really enjoy the fire. Early August was selected, as sunset is already beginning to be noticeably earlier. And, children in some states, will soon go back to school. We want the kids to enjoy and cherish the memories of a summer campfire, too.

Have a safe and happy Campfire Day and Night!

Enhance the Campfire Experience

  • Cook dinner over the fire. Hot dogs and foil dinners are real hits.
  • Make campfire cooked apples.
  • Cook toasted marshmallows and/or S’mores.
  • Got kids? Teach them how to build and manage fires safely.
  • Plan some campfire stories
  • Sing a few campfire songs.
  • Tell stories.
National Marshmallow Toasting Day

Campfire Safety

Safety around the campfire is essential Here are some tips for a safe and fun time by the fireside:

  • Keep small children away from the fire.
  • Always have a bucket of water nearby.
  • Better still, have a hose near the fire.
  • Never have a fire when there is a ban or in dry conditions that could allow errant sparks to start an uncontrolled fire.
  • Never leave a fire unattended, not even for a minute.
  • Always put the fire out completely when you leave it for the evening.
  • Don’t make the fire too big.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Campfire Day

Here are some ways to enjoy Campfire Day:

  • Start the fire early and keep it going into the late evening when you’re ready to go in for the night.
  • Invite family and friends.
  • Make S’mores!
Campfire Day and Campfire Night

Today's Chuckle

How Rare is it for someone to die falling into a campfire?   …. Probably medium rare.

History and Origin of Campfire Day and Night

In 2017, Bob Matthews of Rochester N.Y., and author of  Holiday Insights.com created Campfire Day. In researching special holidays for over a dozen years, Bob was simply amazed that no one had created a special day to celebrate and appreciate summer campfires.

The date was selected for two reasons. First, August is a perfect month for campfires as the evening temperatures begin to cool. Second, Matthews chose a Saturday night because most people have off of work on Sunday, so they can stay up late at the fireside.

According to Bob Matthews, the creator, this special holiday IS NOT a “National” day.

About Bad Poetry Day

When is National Bad Poetry Day? This holiday is always observed on August 18

Bad Poetry Day is a day to create some really bad verse. But, why you ask? Perhaps, the answer is simply “because you can”. Maybe this August 18 holiday exists to allow us to better appreciate good poetry. Or, perhaps it is to be written to irritate someone. If bad poetry just isn’t your thing, you can read some great poetry. For starters, may we suggest works by Emily Dickinson, one of America’s greatest poets.

According to Wellcat.com, the creators of this day, the intention is to gather a group of old high school friends, and write some really bad poetry together. Then, send the poetry to your old high school teacher. Wow! That sounds like a lot of fun.

Today’s Poem is dedicated to you, the reader:

So, you’re a poet
But you don’t know it.
Try writing some verse
But, don’t be terse.
After it’s writ,
It will read like……….

To celebrate this special holiday, it is not enough to just write some bad poetry. Rather you need to read it to someone or give it to someone to read.

Walt Whitman is probably turning in his grave today.

Happy Bad Poetry Day!

World UFO Day

Space Day, When is World UFO Day. Create a Vacuum Day

About World UFO Day

When is World UFO Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 2

Are we alone in the universe? Scientists estimate there are over 2 trillion galaxies out there in space. There are countless stars and planets. How could there not be other intelligent life forms? Speculation is only heightened by the irregular siting of Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFOs. The Roswell Incident and the secretive, off-limits Area 51 only heightens speculation. Today is World UFO Day. If this July 2 holiday seems alien to you, we certainly understand. It is a special day that comes to us, literally from out of this world.

World UFO Day supporters seek to get governments to fess up to the existence of UFOs. Many people believe that UFOs from outer space have already visited us, and a big, government cover-up is hiding the facts from the public.

The date for this special day is the date of the Roswell Incident, a historical event leading to wide speculation and belief that aliens have indeed visited us. In 1947, an object crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. This official explanation is it was a military crash. But to this day, millions of people believe it was actually an alien spacecraft. Many people believe the Alien remains are secretly held in Area 51 inside a secret Air Force facility in Nevada.

Organizers are downright serious about convincing the overall public to believe that we indeed have been visited by aliens from outer space. They are seeking to get the U.S. and other governments to admit to what they believe is a reality.

Have we been visited by extra-terrestrial beings? You make the call.

The Roswell Incident

July 2, 1947, is a date well known to UFO believers (Isn’t everyone!?). On this date, Mac Brazel, a rancher in northwest Roswell, New Mexico discovered the wreckage of a metallic object on his ranch. The wreckage and the metal it was made of were strange. He contacted military authorities who investigated the site and removed the wreckage. The first military reports referenced a mysterious, Unidentified Flying Object. These reports were later rescinded, leading to wide speculation and claims of a massive government cover-up of the discovery of UFOs from outer space. It also sparked fear of a UFO invasion and rumors of other incidents. Of course, that speculation is alive and well today.

The remains of the wreckage of the alien spacecraft are believed to be held at Area 51 on a secretive Air Force Base in Nevada.

You can go to International UFO and Research Center in Roswell, NM.  You will find a wealth of information about UFOs and what might be hidden from the public at Area 51. Will we ever learn the full truth about Area 51? Perhaps not. But, many people keep on trying.

  • Send audio messages into space encouraging aliens to visit Earth. And, make sure your address is in the message.
  • Visit your local planetarium or observatory.
  • Support organizations seeking aliens.
  • If you come across any little green men today, be friendly and welcoming.
  • Watch a movie about aliens and UFOs.

History and Origin of World UFO Day

Throughout the 20th century, people became more interested in whether there were other intelligent life forms, or if we are all alone. So we know about the increasing speculation on this topic. However, we do not know who created World UFO Day, or exactly when it was first celebrated.  We suspect it evolved the speculation caused by the Roswell Incident.

About World Population Day

When is World Population Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 11

Stand up and be counted. Today is World Population Day. This special United Nations holiday evolved from Five Billion Day. On this July 11 holiday many years ago, the world’s population was estimated to reach five billion people.  We certainly have added a lot of human beings since then.

With all the issues related to the billions of people, World Population Day strives to raise awareness of global population issues. The United Nations seeks to promote awareness of issues related to population growth, including the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.

Population Day focuses on people under 25, reproductive issues, and health. The United Nations World Population Fund (UNFPA) sponsors this annual holiday. According to the UNFPA website, the focus of this day is on people under 25 and those of reproductive age. This day seeks to provide education and awareness of reproductive health, reproductive choice, and family planning, and to provide a better future for young people.

The Population on Planet Earth

The population of the world has increased steadily since the Medieval times. With an ever-growing world population, people became interested in “Five Billion Day” on July 11, 1987. This is the approximate date when the world’s population reached five billion people. This sparked the creation of World Population Day. But, the population growth story does not peak there. According to the United Nations Population Fund, there was an estimated 7.75 billion people on December 2019.

Sometime in 2023, India will surpass China as the most populous country in the world. They both currently have 1.4 billion people. The United States is a distant third with 339 million people.

The world’s population will reach over 9 billion people by 2050, and over 11 billion by 2100. Can the world feed that many people? The answer quite frankly is, we don’t know.

Did You Know? Worldwide, over 200.000 babies are born each day!

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Population Day

Here’s how you can participate in World Population Day:

  • Help to bring awareness of these issues to the youth in your community.
  • When your country holds a census, stand up and be counted.

World Tofu Day and National Tofu Day

Earth Animation. How to Create Holidays

About Tofu Day

When is Tofu Day? World Tofu Day is July 26. UK National Tofu Day is September 1.

There are two days for vegetarians to celebrate tofu. Aren’t you lucky!? The goal of both World Tofu Day and the UK’s National Tofu Day is to celebrate tofu as a vegetarian alternative to meats and fish. It celebrates healthy tofu and encourages people to stop the cruelty to animals through a more vegetarian diet. Vegetarians and animal rights groups applaud Tofu and promote its consumption. A second goal of these two special holidays is to spread awareness of the benefits of eating a plant-based diet, especially as it impacts animals. SPA Canada an animal rights group and the creator of World Tofu Day, uses this day to strongly fight to end animal cruelty.

Did You Know? The roots of vegetarianism date back to 600 BC in ancient Greece. However, it wasn’t until the 10th Century that the Chinese perfected the process of making Tofu. There are also some references to Tofu being first created in Japan around the same time.

Whether you are celebrating World Tofu Day or National Tofu Day, tofu should definitely be on your menu today. Recipes abound and are just an internet search away.

Special thought just for this day: You can’t have your tofu and eat it, too.

About Tofu

Asian in origin, the word “Tofu” in Mandarin translates to “spoiled beans”. Early Chinese knew that tofu was healthy. They associated the consumption of tofu with a long and healthy life. In addition, it didn’t cost much, serving as an affordable option for those who didn’t have money for meat.

Tofu is a vegetable product made from soybeans. It is rich in vitamins and protein. Tofu is a healthy and organic substitute for meat and fish and is a staple of vegetarians. Soft, bland, and custard-like, Tofu doesn’t have much flavor. Like potatoes or rice, it’s what you put on it, that makes it so enjoyable.

There are several steps to making tofu. The first steps are to make soy milk. A second series of steps produces tofu. You can have extra fun today, by making your own tofu… How to make soy milk and tofu

How to Celebrate and Participate in Tofu Day

There are many things you can do to celebrate World Tofu Day and UK National Tofu Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Eat tofu.
  • Buy it at your grocery store or order it in a restaurant.
  • Make Tofu at home

History and Origin of Tofu Day

World Tofu Day was created by the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada in 2014. SPA Canada is an animal rights protection group that seeks to end animal cruelty and encourage humans to practice plant-based diets.

National Tofu Day was created in the United Kingdom. It appears to have started around 2017-2018. We have not yet identified who created it. This special holiday is beginning to gain popularity in the United States.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. Our research found no UK parliamentary law or proclamation for this day. We also found no proclamation from the queen or any member of the royal family.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is so important to distinguish and identify true national days.
