Make Your Own Sundae Day

About Make your Own Sundae Day

Date When Celebrated: Make Your Own Sundae Day is always Celebrated on July 11

We're entering the hottest days of summer. We look to cool off in many ways. The pool or the beach is tops on our list. But, right behind in popularity is consuming copious amounts of ice cream. (We'll all go on a diet after summer is over) As a result, it's only fitting that we celebrate more than a few ice cream holidays in July and August. Today we celebrate Make You Own Sundae Day. Importantly, we don't just eat ice cream sundaes today. Rather, we express our creativity as we make our own, with a wide selection of toppings. After all, it's the toppings that makes the sundae.

How to Celebrate Make Your Own Sundae Day

According to the creators of this special holiday, this is a day to show off your skill in making a creative sundae. We suggest you make a contest of it. Here's how:

Get together with family or friends. Have an ice cream sundae party.

Provide the following items:

  • Vanilla and chocolate ice cream
  • Several popular toppings - nuts, marshmallows, m&ms, crushed oreo cookies, etc.
  • Some fruits -  cherries, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries
  • Sauces - fudge, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Bowls, spoons and napkins

Place all of the above items on a table. Let each person make their own, adding what ever topping they desire. Encourage creative and artistic sundaes. You could even create prizes for the most unique or most creative.

Chow down and enjoy!

The History of Ice Cream Sundaes

The roots of ice cream sundaes goes back to the late 1800s and the Sunday Blue Laws, among which said stores could not sell alcohol and alcohol related products on Sunday. Among the items that could not be sold on Sunday was soda. At the time, ice cream sodas were very popular. As a result, ice cream vendors came up with alternatives. This led to the creation of the ice cream sundae. In turn, this led to controversy as to who was the first to create the ice cream sundae. At least three gentleman claimed to play a role in the creation of ice cream sundaes. They are:

  1.  Edward Berner of Riverside, Wi. He was the first known to create sundaes. In 1881, Berner's customer George Hallauer was unable to have an ice cream soda on a Sunday. So, he asked Berner to put chocolate sauce on top of some vanilla ice cream.  How much did it cost? A nickel.
  2. In 1890, a customer asked druggist Mr. Sonnetag to put some chocolate sauce on his ice cream. He named it Sonnetag, which is German for "Sunday".
  3. On April 3, 1892, Minister John M. Scott and Chester Platt, a pharmacy co-owner created a sundae in Ithaca, NY. Platt covered ice cream with cherry syrup and candied cherries. He named it "Cherry Sunday".

Today's Quote: "Love is an ice cream sundae, with all the marvelous coverings. Sex is the cherry on top." - - Jimmy Dean

History and Origin of Make You Own Sundae Day

This fun holiday was started on July 11, 1992 by the Cooper family of Baltimore, MD. They have made this an annual family event. They hope you do so, too!

This holiday was not created as a "National" day. A couple of websites refer to it as "National Make Your Own Sundae Day". However, this is not the title give to the day by the Cooper family.

Neither the U.S. Congress, nor any President of the United States has proclaimed today to be National Make Your Own Sundae Day.
