About International Chefs Day

When is International Chefs Day? This holiday is always observed on October 20

Not all holidays and special events originate in the United States, not by a long shot. Without a doubt, some of the really great ones originate in just about any part of the world. International Chefs Day, an October 20 holiday, is one of those great ones. And it comes to us all the way from South Africa.  From the southern tip of Africa, this holiday has spread around the world, making it a truly international day.

One of the things that makes this special day so great, is that it is not just about honoring or celebrating chefs. Sure, one of the objectives of this day is to celebrate this noble profession and to promote this exciting career. But, the main focus of  International Chefs Day is to provide education, especially to kids, on how to eat healthily.

The organization Worldchefs is perhaps the largest promoter of  International Chefs Day. This is a worldwide network of chef associations. Each year, the Worldchefs organization sets a theme for this day and helps to provide educational materials to interested groups. These materials make it pretty easy for your group to hold healthy eating programs for your community.

To celebrate this day, schools, governments, and local organizations hold educational programs, workshops, and exhibits on how to prepare healthy foods. In keeping with the stated goals of this day, a special emphasis is  placed on holding programs for young people, helping them to establish healthy eating habits for a long and healthy life.

How to Celebrate International Chefs Day

To celebrate this day, schools, governments, and local organizations are encouraged to hold educational programs, workshops, and exhibits on how to prepare healthy foods. In keeping with the stated goals of this day, a special emphasis should be placed on holding programs for young people, helping them to establish healthy eating habits for a long and healthy life.

Accordingly, show appreciation to all the current and aspiring chefs you see during this holiday. Certainly, your children are among this group. A greeting card and a gift card is very appropriate.

Indigenous People Day

North America. When is Leif Erikson Day? Indigenous People Day.

About Indigenous People Day

Date When Celebrated: This holiday is observed on the second Monday in October

On the second Monday in October, we celebrate Indigenous People Day. It is often referred to as Native American DayIndigenous People Day is related to another Native American Day, celebrated on the fourth Friday in September. To further complicate matters, what is the definition of indigenous people and native Americans? Are they the same? Who exactly are we celebrating and honoring, and why? Are you among the many people who are confused!? Read on………

Definition of Indigenous versus Native People

Let’s understand the definitions first, so we clearly understand who we are referring to, and to whom we are celebrating and honoring. Indigenous people are those who first populated an area before anyone else. Natives are defined as people who have lived in an area since birth. Yes, you are native to where you were born. It became confusing when the term “American Indian”, considered to be offensive, was changed to “Native American”. However, most, if not all of us, are comfortable using the term “Native American”,  to refer to people who are indigenous to the United States.

Whew!. I’m sure glad that definition is out of the way. Now let’s just enjoy this holiday.

Now let's get a better understanding of some conflicting holidays

Native American Day – Originated in the state of California, this day has been around since 1939. It wasn’t until 1977, that Indigenous People Day began to take root. Often also called “Native American Day”, it is more widespread, with international meaning than the original Native American Day. More on Native American Day

Columbus Day –  This holiday originated in 1972, to honor and celebrate Christopher Columbus, who was the first person to discover America. Over the past few decades, many have comerealizedt Columbus wasn’t the first person, not even the first European to land in, and “discover” America. Many say he did not even discover America, as in 1492 he did not land on the mainland of the American continent. It also became widely recognized that Europeans often came as conquerors, and worse. More on Columbus Day

Leif Erikson Day – Around 1002 A.D. Leif Erikson from Greenland, a European country, sailed down the eastern coast of North America as far as New Foundland, and his crew spent the winter there. While he was the first European to come to America, he was not the first. Indigenous people… Native Americans…. were already there. More on Leif Erikson Day

Today's Quote

American Indian Teepee When is Native American Day? Indigenous People Day? Indian Pudding Day.

“The worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades.’ – – Demetri Martin

All of this leads us to today.... Indigenous People Day

Efforts to recognize, celebrate and protect indigenous people began in 1977. This occurred at a United Nations Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations. It was worldwide in scope. In the U.S., the effort has steadily grown, partially to downplay or even eliminate Columbus Day. Now, dozens of cities and states in the U.S, recognize Indigenous People Day. Some, not all, have used this holiday in place of Columbus Day.

This day is used to honor and celebrate indigenous people, those very first settlers of a region. Who were the original inhabitants of your city or town? Do you know what tribe they belonged to? Are they still in your area? Today is a great day to learn more about them. Your local library or town historian are great sources for this information.

Schools, libraries, historical societies, and local government should use this day to provide educational programs, lectures, and exhibits on the indigenous people who first lived and worked the land in your area.

Howl at the Moon Night

Moon Phases Lunar Cycle. When is Howl at the Moon Night? October 25 holidays.

About Howl at the Moon Night

When is Howl at the Moon Night? This holiday is always observed on October 25

Every year in late October, we get the opportunity to participate and enjoy Howl at the Moon Night. The closer we get to Halloween, things begin to get strange and eerie. Hopefully, the evening will be cloudless. And hopefully, it will be a full moon, as they are more fun to howl at. While the moon is more often in the night sky, sometimes it is visible in the daytime. When this happens, this October 25 holiday is called Howl at the Mon Day.

This holiday is all about the animals that are known to “howl at the moon”. This includes wolves, coyotes, dogs, and perhaps even a couple of humans that you know. In particular, wolves have been howling at the moon for a long, long time. Wolves have been around for over 1.5 million years, much longer than humans.

People believe all canines are more vocal during a full moon. But, do they really howl at the moon? Recent studies say “No”. But frankly, we believe those studies are simply wrong.

The Legend of the Wolf and the Moon

According to an ancient legend, the full moon came down to earth on a dark evening to discover its mysteries. The moon was playing among the trees when she became trapped in the branches. A wolf came upon the scene and freed her. They spent the entire night sharing stories, laughing and having a good time. The moon fell in love with the wolf. She stole the wolf’s shadow as a remembrance of the wonderful evening. Every night since then, upon seeing the moon, the wolf would begin to howl, begging to get his shadow back.

How to Celebrate Howl at the Moon Night

So what do you do to participate in this special night? We think you know what to do on Howl at the Moon Night. Join in on the fun of this special day. Go outside tonight and howl at the moon at the top of your lungs. BTW: If the moon is in the sky during the day right now, and you can see it, it is perfectly appropriate to howl at the moon during the daytime. You can also use this day to learn more about wolves and conservation efforts to ensure their survival.

When is Hermit Day? October 29 holidays

About Hermit Day

When is Hermit Day? This Holiday is always observed on October 29

If ever there was a day to crawl into your shell all by yourself, talk to no one, and act like a hermit crab, today is that day. Hermit Day is today, an October 29 holiday.  Certainly, as a recluse you shun publicity. Instead, this is a quiet day to spend quietly in seclusion, all by yourself.

For some people, being a recluse is a way of life. They spend every day by themselves, in peaceful seclusion. For whatever reason, Hermits prefer living away from the crowds and the sea of humanity. For many of us who lead an increasingly busy and stressful lifestyle, the idea of being a “Hermit for a Day” is very tempting. The thought of getting away from it all, even if for just one day, is very appealing.

If you are a Hermit, celebrate your lifestyle today. If you’re one of the many, who yearn for a break from your hectic lifestyle, be a Hermit on this day. Chill out by yourself where no one can find you. We hope that no one interrupts the calm and serenity you seek today.

Our Favorite Musicians: The 1960s rock band Herman’s Hermits

Our Favorite Crustacean: Hermit Crabs

Have a happy, secluded, quiet, and peaceful Hermit Day.

How to Celebrate Hermit Day

  • Spend this day in a secluded area or environment.
  • May we suggest you do so with a good reading book all by yourself?
  • If you are a recluse, stay in your shell and celebrate quietly with no one but yourself.
  • Go into hiding for the next 48 hours. Halloween is coming, and with it comes witches, ghosts, ghouls, vampires, and all kinds of scary creatures.
  • We won’t suggest a Hermit Day party, as this is an oxymoron.
  • Listen to Herman’s Hermits songs.
  • Buy a hermit crab.

History and Origin of Hermit Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. We believe this day was started by a hermit. So far, he has not come out of his hiding place long enough to claim credit for creating this day. The last thing he’d want is to be in the limelight.

Aside from Ecard companies and calendar websites, there is little reference to this day.

In addition to Hermit Day, here are some things that happened on this day:

When is Wear Something Gaudy Day? This holiday is always observed on October 17

Wear Something Gaudy Day is today. Surely, this October 17 holiday is your chance to really stick out in a crowd. The word “gaudy” refers to something bright, gay, cheap, showy, outlandish, or otherwise not in good taste.

Have a little fun on this day. For just one day, forego fashion and style. Pick out clothes to wear today, that do not match, ones with colors that clash. If you look at them and say “I wouldn’t be caught dead in that”, then it’s the perfect outfit for this day. Look for something to wear that’s really wild and wacky, and will stick out like a sore thumb wherever you go. If you don’t have anything like this in your wardrobe, perhaps a friend does.

Note: If you’re always garbed in gaudy attire, this is your day to look like everyone else!

History and Origin of International Frugal Fun Day

This special day was created by Shel Horowitz, author of The Penny-Pinching Hedonist: How to Live Like Royalty with a Peasant’s Pocketbook. We strongly suspect Frugal Fun Day was created, in part, to promote the book. Regardless of the reason for creating this day, we see nothing wrong with having a little inexpensive fun. As a matter of fact, it’s the perfect holiday for people on a tight budget.

We dug deeply into the origin of this day. Some references refer to it as “International” Frugal Fun Day, and “National” Frugal Fun Day. However, we found no documentation supporting the International or National tags.

7ational Frappe Day is today, an October 7 holiday. It’s time to make, or buy, and drink your favorite Frappe. One might consider Frappes to have an identity crisis. It’s made of many different things. The dictionary definition of Frappes is that it is an ice cream beverage drink. So, what’s with all of the confusion? First of all, some definitions and recipes, are the same as the ingredients for a milkshake. Also, many frappe recipes do not call for ice cream at all. Some use whipped cream. Other recipes use yogurt in place of ice cream. Other recipes still include alcohol.  So, if you’re confused, you’re in good company.

Do you care what the official definition of Frappes is? Of course not. You just care that it tastes so good, that you clamor for more. Thanks to its popularity, there are recipes galore. Perhaps the most popular today, are coffee and mocha frappes, served by coffee shops and cafes.

BTW: There’s a reason why National Frappe Day occurs in October. That’s so we can enjoy Pumpkin Frappe.

Frankenstein Friday

When is Frankenstein Friday and National Frankenstein Day? Birth of Frankenstein. August 30 holidays.

About Frankenstein Friday

When is Frankenstein Friday? This holiday is observed on the last Friday in October

TGIF, Thank God It’s Friday. Frankenstein Friday is a day to celebrate. It celebrates the birth of Frankenstein and Victor Frankenstein, the monster’s creator. Frankenstein is one of the best-known horror characters, dating back to the 1800s. We can’t imagine the Halloween season without the presence of Frankenstein, lurking somewhere in the darkness. And today, you can celebrate the birth of Frankenstein.

To clear up a little confusion….. The scientist that created the monster was Victor Frankenstein. The monster he brought to life was “Frankenstein’s Monster”. However, many people refer to the monster as “Frankenstein”.

Frankenstein was born in 1818 when Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, at the age of 21, wrote the story “Frankenstein”.

Frankenstein’s Mother: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Father of Frankenstein: Boris Karloff

To celebrate this day, we suggest you read the novel or see a Frankenstein movie.

Ron MacCloskey, the creator of this special day, by awarding “The Franky” to someone who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of Frankenstein. Maybe next year, you will receive the coveted “Franky” award.

History and Origin of Frankenstein Friday

Jack O'Lantern. October 31 holidays

This special day was created by Ron MacCloskey from Westfield, New Jersey in 1997.

Note: Ron’s hometown of Westfield, NJ. is also the hometown of Charles Addams, the New York Times magazine cartoonist who created The Addams Family. As a result, Ron’s interest in Frankenstein comes as no surprise.

Ron picked Friday to celebrate this day for the “FR” connection, and because more people can party on Friday than on other nights of the week.
