Global Belly Button Day

When is Global Belly Button Day? June 25 holidays

About Global Belly Button Day

When is Global Belly Button Day? This holiday is always observed on June 25

Summer officially arrived a couple of days ago. With its arrival comes hot and sticky weather. We surely hope that you have finely toned your body for summer because we will all be wearing less clothes. And certainly, our belly button will be prominently displayed. As a result, today is the perfect day to celebrate Global Belly Button Day. On this hot June 25 holiday, we proudly show off our navel to the world.

Our Belly button, or navel, is a lasting reminder of our birth and connection to our mother. At birth, the umbilical cord is cut. The resulting scar is your navel. It is a sense of fascination and is often viewed sensually.

Belly Button Trivia and Fun Facts

Most people are fascinated with belly buttons. So, here are some fun and interesting belly button trivia and factoids:

  • No two belly buttons are exactly alike.
  • Jeannie on the television show “I Dream of Jeannie” (1965 – 1970) has the most well-known belly button.
  • Donna Krampf put a world-record 10 blueberries in her belly button at once.
  • Outies are not the result of how the umbilical cord was cut.
  • Clean your navel thoroughly. Studies show over 2,300 different kinds of bacteria can reside inside it.
  • You might think belly button piercing began recently. However, it has been around for thousands of years. It took off in the United States and elsewhere in the 1990s.
  •  Since 1969, the town of Furano, Japan has hosted an annual Belly Button Festival.
  • Heaven forbid you are afraid of your navel. If so, then you have omphalophobia.
  • All mammals except the platypus have navels. The platypus lays eggs.

The Fascination with Belly Buttons

Global Belly Button Day is not the only time that humans have shown interest in the scar from the umbilical cord. The fascination with navels goes back thousands of years. In 1500 B.C., ancient cultures considered the belly button a sacred symbol of life and fertility. These ancient civilizations considered it the center of the body and the portal to the soul. Girls bare their stomachs to show their navel as they performed belly dances in Ancient Middle East and Northern Africa.

For a short while during Puritan times, belly buttons and most of the body were covered. Yet, throughout most of human history, navels were prominently displayed. It has always been a sensual object to arouse men. Thus, today young girls (and often not so young girls) show off their navels and flat, toned stomachs in skimpy bikinis and midriff shirts.

Innies Versus Outies

There are all kinds of belly buttons. What does yours look like? Take a minute to contemplate our navel.

The biggest distinction is whether your navel is an “Innie” or an “Outie”. An “Outie” is a belly button that is either flat with your stomach or protrudes out ever so slightly like a bump above the surface of your stomach. Babies, pregnant mothers, and very skinny people tend to have Outies. On the other hand, as its name implies, an “Innie” is a belly button that recedes into your belly. Some are shallow. While others are so deep that you can store gum and other objects in it. As we become adults, the majority of us have Innies. Whether you have an Innie or an Outie, they are equally attractive and sensual.

Additionally, navels have one of three basic shapes. They are round, oval in shape horizontally, or oval in shape vertically. Most people find them equally alluring.

Do you have a favorite shape? Most people simply like them all.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Global Belly Button Day

Take the opportunity today to enjoy your belly button and admire navels on others. But, don’t gawk. With the hot weather, plenty of navels are on display.

  • First and foremost, clean the lint and other gunk out of your navel. If you’re going to show it off, then it must be presentable.
  • Then, contemplate your navel. It’s truly a fascinating part of your body.
  • Are you in shape to show off your midriff? Hopefully, you’ve prepared for the summer season, and your stomach is flat and rock hard. If not, then take steps immediately to get in shape and tone your abs today.
  • The term emerged in England in the 1530s.
  • Watch a belly dance. Better still, take lessons.
  •  Put a drop of perfume or cologne in your navel just in case someone gets close enough to get a whiff of it.
  • Consider a belly button ring. Of course, many people believe it is perfect all by itself and would never consider changing it.
  • Kids, store your gum and other objects in it if you must. However, we do not encourage it.
  • See how many types of navels you can see.

History and Origin of Global Belly Button Day

Bob Matthews from HolidayInsights.com created Global Belly Button Day in 2025. Matthews said it was obviously a holiday in need of creation. People share a fascination with navels at every age, and for many varying reasons. So, let’s give this body part proper recognition.

In researching this holiday, we found only a few references to a Belly Button Day of any kind. One strange reference suggested a “National Sniff Your Belly Button Day” in January. The title causes you to wonder who can contort their body in such a way that they get their nose close enough to smell their navel. Although you might get a friend to take a whiff for you.

The sparse references stated a variety of dates to celebrate. As a result, Matthews found it appropriate to declare a global day of celebration because people around the world enjoy navels. This is a June 25 holiday, because at this time summer has arrived. Therefore, it is the right time to display them.

This Day in History

In addition to Global Belly Button Day, here are some other important things that happened on this day:

  • Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced the fork to American dining. At first, its use was considered sacrilegious. (1630)
  • Custer’s Last Stand: Lt Colonel George Custer and the 7th Cavalry are wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of Little Big Horn. (1876)
  • Actor and politician Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930.

National Root Beer Day

When is Root Beer Float Day, August 6 holidays

When is National Root Beer Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 17

Stick a mug or two into the freezer. Then, join us as we celebrate National Root Beer Day with a frosty mug of root beer soda. On this June 17 holiday, we enjoy one of America’s favorite beverages. And we’re happy to report it’s a truly American beverage. Native American tribes in both North and South America have enjoyed this beverage since ancient times.

Root beer was originally used for medicinal purposes. It was used to treat a variety of common ailments, including aches, colds, fevers, rheumatism, skin conditions, and upset stomachs. Later, people discovered the great refreshing taste of root beer. Then, it became popular as a soothing and relaxing beverage. During the late 1870s, soda manufacturers began to make it carbonated. Then, its popularity took off.

Question of the Day:

Q: What’s better than a frosty mug of root beer?

A: A frosty mug of root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

The History of the Root Beer

Ancient native tribes in the Americas made an early form of root beer. Originally, it was used for medicinal purposes, and later as a beverage. In pre-colonial times it was primarily used for medicinal purposes. In colonial America, even Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington enjoyed an occasional root beer. Dial forward to modern times, and we find Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires experimenting with various beverages. At the suggestion of a friend, he experimented and ultimately created the first liquid, carbonated root beer. Hires used 25 herbs, berries, and roots in his original root beer recipe. Then in 1876, at the urging of his friend, he sold it to the public at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Hires Root Beer became an instant hit. Then in 1893, his company was the first to sell root beer in bottles.

It didn’t take other soda manufacturers long to brew and bring their brand to market using their own recipe. They used a wide variety of ingredients. Today, there are about 100 brands of root beer sold in the United States. And, there are many different flavors. Among them are original, cherry, grape, and more.

How Root beer got its name:

The word “root” in the name comes from the fact that until 1960, it was made from the root of the sassafras tree. In 1960, artificial sassafras flavoring replaced the actual sassafras root because the FDA found it was carcinogenic and a toxic substance. Root beer is made from a brewing process. Hence the word “Beer” in the name. However, there is no alcohol in root beer.

Root Beer Trivia and Facts

As you savor one of summer’s favorite frosty treats, check out our Root Beer  trivia and fun facts:

  • Centuries ago, Native Americans made a form of root beer using the rot back of the sassafras tree. It was used in tribal medicine and as a beverage.
  • In 1876, commercial production of root beer began. It was first marketed as a medicinal drink by Charles Hires from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Root beer is caffeine-free.
  • There are numerous root beer recipes. Most of them include some combination of cinnamon, licorice root, molasses, nutmeg, sassafras root, and vanilla.
  • In 1960, the FDA banned sassafras root oil because it’s carcinogenic and toxic. Nowadays, root beer recipes use artificial sassafras flavoring.
  • The average person drinks 1.4 root beers per year. However, some people consume a whole lot more.
  • There are about 100 brands of root beer.
  • The Sarsaparilla tree, where sassafras roots come from, is native to Mexico and Peru.

The Best Root Beer Brands

You can take as many taste tests as you want. But, it’s next to impossible to name the top root beer brands. Everyone has different taste buds and different ways to rank the top brands. And, practically every soda manufacturer uses their own “secret” recipe to make their brand of root beer. Some people rank brands by fizziness, flavor, smoothness, or spiciness.

Some of the most popular brands of root beer are:

  • A&W – Currently the top brand by sales volume.
  • Barq’s
  • Hires – First made in 1876, it is the original root beer brand.
  • IBC
  • Saranac
  • Sprecher

How to Celebrate National Root Beer Day

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in National Root Beer:

  • First, put a couple of mugs in the freezer. Then, make your own root beer. There are plenty of recipes online.
  • Buy a six-pack of root beer and share it with friends. The beach is a good place to enjoy it.
  • Make a float. Fill a frosty mug with root beer. Then, add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Let’s party! Make it a root beer party.
  • Hold a taste test. Use several different brands of root beer to see which one comes out on top.

Today's Quote

“You will never win if you never begin.” – – Helen Rowland

History and Origin of National Root Beer Day

We have not yet identified who created this frosty holiday. Most likely it is one of dozens of soda manufacturers that make and market root beer. A few articles suggest that this is National Stewart’s Root Beer Day, promoting Stewart’s brand of root beer. However, in some articles we read, the company refers to activity they planned for “National Root Beer Day”. So, we believe the word “Stewart’s” should not be included in the title of this holiday. In 1924. Frank Stewart began his company by selling his original flavor of root beer from a drive thru. He eventually expanded to flavored root beers. The flavors include cream, soda, black cherry, and grape.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is important to distinguish true National days.

This Day in History

Here are some things that happened on this day:

  • The Battle of Bunker Hill took place, one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War. “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” (1775)
  • U.S. Supreme Court rules against Bible reading and prayer in public schools. (1963)
  • Barry Manilow, singer, and songwriter. was born on this day in 1943.

World Social Media Day

Cell Phone, National App Day. When is Social Media Day? June 30 holidays

About World Social Media Day

When is World Social Media Day? This holiday is always observed on June 30

Let’s be sociable! With the arrival of the internet, it’s become easy to communicate our lives, our feelings, and our beliefs. We post countless pictures and texts. Today is World Social Media Day. On this June 30 holiday, we celebrate the invention of this great interactive tool that has changed our lives and the way we communicate with the world. What better way to celebrate than to go on our cell phones and access our favorite social media platforms.

It’s in our DNA to be sociable. We humans are generally friendly and communicate with one another. And today, thanks to the internet and its many social channels, it has never been easier to keep in touch. We share our lives with others in what we post online. It regularly absorbs many enjoyable hours of our time.

Social media can be good. And sometimes, it is a bad thing. It’s great to transmit and share news and information. Social platforms on the internet allow us to get our message across, loudly, clearly, and instantaneously. We openly share to the world our thoughts and feelings in words, pictures, and video. We express our beliefs, too. Unfortunately, our communications are unfiltered and that can be good or bad. And, the proliferation of fake news is an immense problem on social media platforms. So, we have to take the good with the bad, and appreciate the good features and benefits it offers us.

The Evolution of Communications and Social Media

As mentioned previously, we are social creatures. Our first communications were charcoal writings on cave walls. As time passed, man began to communicate with etchings on stone tablets. Leap forward a few thousand years, and our ancestors discovered how to make crude paper out of papyrus leaves. Communications and recording of historical events were printed on the papyrus sheets.

Leap forward another few thousand years, and we find much better quality paper going through printing presses. This allowed us to communicate to a much broader population. And, we put pen to paper. On it, we wrote love letters, business correspondence, and expressed our views. Copiers were invented, and our social interactions grew in leaps and bounds.

Then, one day not so long ago, the Internet was invented. At first the internet was used by businesses, scientists, and other organizations. Then, in the blink of an eye, we all became connected to the “Net”. As billions of us found more and more uses for the Internet, it became evident, that it was not just a source of information. Rather, we came to realize that we could use it to communicate to one or two people, or to the whole world. With this realization, social media was born, and many social platforms were created to meet our various needs.

Social Media Trivia and Fun Facts

There’s no fake news here. We believe this social media trivia is true and factual.

  • The term social media was coined in 1997.
  • SixDegrees.com launched the first social media platform on the internet.
  • Teens are by far the biggest users. Is anyone surprised by this fact?
  • Facebook has an estimated 3.1 billion users.
  • Users spend an estimated 1 billion hours a day watching YouTube videos.
  • First, it was Twttr. Then, it became Twitter. Now, it’s simply “X”. What will it be tomorrow!?
  • In 2009, an astronaut posted the first tweet from the International Space Station.
  • 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the interview and hiring process.
  • Every picture and posting you make increases your digital footprint. And, it stays out there forever.

How to Celebrate World Social Media Day

We already spend countless hours on our cell phones reading and writing on numerous social media platforms. Overall, it’s fun and informative, along with addicting. Here are some ways to participate in World Social Media Day:

  • Share the latest happening in your life on social media.
  • Post more pictures! Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa just love seeing pictures of the kids and grandkids. They can’t get enough, especially if they live out of town.
  • Post your feelings on today’s issues. But, be polite and respectful of others.
  • Join a social media platform that you are not currently on.
  • Be polite. Practice good Netiquette.

Today's Quotes

“Social media is reducing social barriers. It connects people on the strength of human values, not identities.” – – Narendra Modi

“Social media is an amazing tool, but it’s really the face-to-face interaction that makes a long-term impact.” – – Felicia Day

“Social media is something of a double-edged sword. At its best, it offers unprecedented opportunities for marginalized people to speak and bring much needed attention to the issues they face. At its worst, social media also offers ‘everyone’ an unprecedented opportunity to share in collective outrage without reflection.” – – Roxane Gay

History and Origin of Social Media Day

On June 30, 2010 World Social Media Day was born. Mashable created this annual holiday to celebrate the evolution and growth of what we fondly refer to as social media. The term “social media” defines the many platforms we use today to communicate on the internet. However, social media in its broader definition, is any vehicle we use to communicate person to person.

It wasn’t all that long ago when we communicated with each other over the phone and by writing a letter with pen and paper. When is the last time you wrote and mailed a letter to someone? Now, we post it for all the world to see on our favorite of many internet social media platforms. Often, we post the same thing on multiple social platforms.

Global Beatles Day

When is Global Beatles Day? Beatles Revolver Record Album, June 25 holidays

About Global Beatles Day

When is Global Beatles Day? This holiday is always observed on June 25

Today we are celebrating a global music sensation. Today is Global Beatles Day. They are the greatest band to ever step onto the stage. On this June 25 holiday, we celebrate the Fab Four – Geroge Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. Beatlemania, as it was called, took the music world by storm. Their reign together lasted for a decade, as they produced one Number 1 hit after another. Every concert was over-filled with wild and screaming starry-eyed fans. The overwhelming success and popularity of the Beatles will be all but impossible to match or beat. So, get out your old Beatles LP records and listen to their historic Rock ‘N Roll music.

In 1960, The Beatles began their road to fame in Liverpool, a suburb of London, England.  The Beatles last public performance as a group was not intended to be the last. Rather, it was a “Get Back Together” project. They played together from the rooftop of the headquarters of Apple Corporation (Apple Records.) It was their first live performance since a farewell tour in 1966. The concert was a success and the group appeared smiling, laughing and happy. However, instead of reuniting them, the rooftop concert on June 30, 1969 was their last public performance as a group. After the group’s final performance together, each Beatle went on to write and sing their own new music. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney both created their own bands, too. Several decades later, the music of the Beatles remains popular.

Have a rockin Happy Global Beatles Day!

  • Amazingly, they amassed 20 number 1 hits, and 34 Billboard “Top 10” hits.
  • They had nine 45s that featured songs on each side that reached the Billboard Top 30.
  • They are the only band to push themselves out of the Number One position with another Number One hit.
  • Their longest single is “Hey Jude”. It is 7 minutes and 15 seconds long.

National Pralines Day

When is National Pralines Day? June 24 holidays.

About National Pralines Day

When is National Pralines Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 24

Today is National Pralines Day. Why would you celebrate this nutty June 24 holiday? Well, if you are allergic to nuts, you likely will skip this food holiday. (And, we feel really bad for you!) For the rest of us, this holiday encourages us to go nuts over this confectionary delight. However, we doubt you need any extra encouragement. Pralines are one of the most popular of all confections.

If you are looking for some pralines, you’re in luck. You’ll find it on the shelves at any candy store. Certainly, you will find them in the candy aisle at your local grocery store. Most of the major big box stores have a candy section which includes pralines. And, if you really want to enjoy this nut-filled chocolate (or caramel) confection, you can make it at home. It’s easy!

The Historic Origin of Pralines

Pralines were invented in France in the 1600s. French pastry chef Clement Lassagne created the first pralines. At the time, he was the personal chef to the comte du Plessis-Praslin. This is where the confection gets its name. It is said that the idea came to him as he watched his daughters eat nuts and caramel candy left over from a prior confectionary project he worked on. Little did he know at the time, but pralines were about to become one of the world’s favorite candy treats. He is called the “Father of the Pralines”.

In 1727, French Ursuline nuns brought the recipe for pralines to New Orleans. In the 1800s, New Orleans confectioners substituted pecans in place of almonds. Pecans were more abundant in the region than almonds. And, with some other alterations to the recipe, American pralines quickly became a sweet Southern confectionary treat. Then, like any other deliciously sweet treat, it gained popularity all over America. Today, it is a favorite confection in candy shops all over the country.

Did You Know? The most expensive Praline Costs $240,000. It is a chocolate praline made in Brussels, Belgium. In case you wonder why te steep price, it’s because every piece has a 3.63 carat diamond on top of it.

Have it your way. There are at least three types of pralines. We know you will enjoy them all. Here are the most popular ones:

The Original French Pralines – These confections consist of almonds and caramel. It is basically the original formula created French pastry chef Clement Lassagne.

Belgian Pralines – They are quite different from other types. It has a hard Belgian chocolate exterior, with a thick, liquid filling consisting of nuts and a sugary syrup.

American Pralines – When the recipe came to the Southern region of the U.S., confectioners found pecans in abundance. So, they used pecans instead of almonds. They also altered the original recipe by using brown sugar, granulated sugar, cream, and butter. It has a chewy consistency.

For the Record – In 2014, over 2,000 high school culinary students from across Georgia own the Guinness World Record for the largest praline. It weighed in at 531 pounds.  It included 100 pounds of Georgia pecans, 371 pounds of sugar, and 32 pounds of butter.

How to Enjoy and Participate in National Pralines Day

Like other food holidays, participating in National Pralines Day is both tasty and fun. Here are some ways to enjoy this holiday:

  • Forget about your diet today. Eat lots of pralines.
  • Buy some French, American and Belgian pralines. Then, invite some friends for a taste test. Which type is the group’s favorite?
  • Make a batch of homemade pralines.
  • Give boxes of pralines away to people in need of cheering up.
  • Bring a box to work to share with co-workers.
  • Grab some pecans and walnuts. Shell them, Then, compare the taste.
  • If you own a candy store, give away free samples. And, offer discounts to purchase them.

History and Origin of National Pralines Day

We did not find the creator of this sweet and nutty food holiday. Nor, did we find why he or she created it. Our speculation is the founder of National Pralines Day was a southern confectioner, perhaps in New Orleans where it was first made in America. Certainly, it was someone who loves this sweet and nutty confection.

The earliest reference to this holiday that we found was in 2011. And, the word “National” was in the title back then.

There are no congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is important to distinguish true National days.

About Celebration of the Senses Day

When is Celebration of the Senses Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 24

We are ecstatic that you have come to your senses and have decided to celebrate this truly important holiday. After all, it is the only wise and rational thing to do. Today is the Celebration of the Senses Day. Celebrating and participating in this June 24 holiday simply makes all the sense in the world. So, c’mon. Use your common sense and party it up big time today!

The five physical senses are hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch. Your body recognizes them thanks to your nose, ears, eyes, skin, and tongue. Some of us were born without one or more of the five physical senses. You may have lost one or more “sense” due to an ailment, an accident, or another cause. Use today to heighten the sensitivity and capability of those you do have. Also, explore potential treatments that could help you to gain it back. Today is not the day to rue what we have lost. Rather, it is an opportunity to celebrate the senses we do have.

In addition to the five physical senses, there are other “Senses”. Researchers tell us there could be as many as many dozen in total. It depends upon your definition. For example, receptors in your body, tell your brain things like temperature and pain.

Your senses are an essential element for a healthy quality of life. They allow us to experience, interact, and communicate successfully with others and with the world around us. We tend to take them for granted. Often, we are only cognizant of them when there is a problem or if we lose them. Use this holiday to recognize their importance in your life. Be thankful that you have all of your faculties. And celebrate each and every one of your valuable senses.

What Are Your Senses?

There are five well-known physical senses. Each sense has a sensory organ. For example, you smell with your nose. The nose is a physical sensory organ of your body. The five physical senses are:

  • Hearing
  • Sight
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Touch

Depending upon who you talk to, there are none, one or several more senses. Some people actually claim there are 12 senses! Here are some of the others. Are they true “Senses”? We will let you be the judge.

Extrasensory Perception (ESP) – Also called the Sixth sense, ESP is the paranormal ability to perceive, predict, or project information without the use of the five physical senses. About 2/3 of us believe in ESP and that we can send messages to and from each other through mind to mind contact. There is no physical sensory organ in your body associated with ESP.

Proprioreceptor – This is a sensory receptor located in the subcutaneous tissue of the body. It detects motion and position of the body. It is a perception of oneself.

Sense of Balance – It’s actually a physical sense. The vestibular system in the inner ear allows us to maintain our balance.

Common Sense – This is the ability to act and behave in a logical and intelligent manner. Many people question if this is truly a sense, or merely an expression. If we are smart, we all use common sense. But, is it a true sense? Researchers are not in agreement.

Other “senses” include temperature, pain, and light. And, some people suggest there are even more.

How to Participate in Celebration of the Senses Day

I get the sense that you are going to love this holiday. It’s quite easy to participate in Celebration of the Senses Day. Here are some practical  ideas:

  • Celebrate! and, be thankful for your senses.
  • Consciously use each of your five senses. Then, observe what they are saying to you.
  • Experiment with ESP.
  • Test out your Proprioceptor.
  • Explore the other “Senses”. Can you relate to them?
  • Learn more about the senses.
  • Learn how to protect and preserve all of your senses. For example, ear coverings in high-decibel work areas protect your hearing.
  • Practice common sense.
  • Share your sensory experiences on social media.
  • Donate to research organizations that seek cures for those who have lost the use of one of the physical senses

Global Garbage Man Day

Garbage Truck, when is Global Garbage Man Day

When is Global Garbage Man Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 17

Everyone deserves a day of recognition for the important work they do. Hauling away our unwanted and often odiferous waste is a tough job. But, somebody has to do it. So, today, we are celebrating and giving recognition to our trash men and women on Global Garbage Man Day. On this June 17 global holiday, spend some time reflecting upon the role of sanitation workers. And, show your appreciation to the men and women who help to keep our world clean, healthy, and disease-free. And, whatever you do, do not take their work for granted. If you live in a big city, you may have experienced a strike by sanitation workers. Now, that quickly becomes an odiferous littered, and rat-infested mess.

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. So, today we’re trash talkin’. The first trash vehicles were carts, often horse or ox-drivien. Garbage men piled trash into the carts by hand and disposed of it outside of towns and villages. Plastic bags did not exist. So, garbage removal was a messy, disease-filled job. Today’s modern garbage truck has automatic loaders, allowing garbage men to sit inside their vehicle and lift trash bins up mechanically, emptying the contents into the top of the truck. While direct contact with trash is usually minimized, it is still a hard job. So, let’s give our garbage man a big “TY”.

Other Names: The Garbage Man is sometimes referred to by a number of other names. Among them are: Trash Man, Trash Collector, Garbage Collector, Refuse Collector, and Sanitation Engineer.

Garbage Men and Woman Have a Dangerous Job

Some jobs are more dangerous than others. Those directly involved in trash collection and disposal are in a risky business. This is a career field filled with health risks. Here are some of them:

  • Odors and fumes are sometimes toxic. It can lead to a variety of ailments.
  • Insects, rats, and a variety of animals can be in trash containers. They are a threat to garbage collectors.
  • Broken glass, cans, and other sharp objects can cut workers severely. Rusty nails are a danger, too. And, it leads to infections.
  • Spoiled, rotten and moldy food, and other materials can cause disease and other ailments.

Trashy Trivia and Facts

Without a doubt, the waste humans produce is a global crisis. Use this trash trivia to enlighten yourself and others, and to encourage others to minimize waste.

  • Garbage men have picked up and removed trash for thousands of years. In 500 B.C., Athens, Greece had a basic form of residential garbage service.
  • Garbage trucks were originally called bin wagons and dustbin lorries.
  • Americans send over 290 million tons of trash to the waste stream each year.
  • The average American throws out 4.9 pounds of trash each and every day.
  • Trash is bad for your mental health. Looking at trash along roadways, parks, and beaches angers and saddens us.
  • Cardboard can be recycled 7 or more times.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that grass clippings and yard waste is the second-largest portion of landfill waste in the U.S. This is an amazing fact. Grass clipping and yard waste are compostable. Most, if not all of these items should never go to a landfill.
  • Aluminum cans are the most recycled item in the U.S.
  • Recycling one ton of aluminum cans saves 21 barrels of oil.
  • Approximately 2.5 million plastic bottles are used every hour in the U.S. Let’s recycle all of it.
  • One ton of recycled plastic saves around 685 gallons of oil.
  • Today’s average garbage truck can hold up to 10 tons of trash.
  • In New York City, the cost of recycling a ton of trash is $300 more than the cost of sending it to a landfill.
  • Many years after closing, landfills are sometimes turned into parks.
  • Sweden only sends about 1% of trash to landfills. It incinerates trash to make energy. Sweden even imports trash from other countries to generate energy.

How to Celebrate Global Garbage Man Day

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in Global Garbage Man Day:

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. The efforts you take help to minimize the trash going into the waste stream.  And, it makes your garbage man’s task a little easier.
  • Be conscious of how you put trash out by the curb. Are rusty nails protruding from the old boards you’re finally tossing out? Did you bag all the trash before putting it into the bin?
  • Put everything into the bin so The garbage man doesn’t have to get out of the truck and handle it.
  • If they pick up today, run out to the road and tell them “Thanks”.
  • Really surprise your garbage man. When he or she comes by, give them a gift card.
  • Encourage and support legislation and government efforts at recycling.

Today's Quote

“The person who dumps garbage into your mind will do you considerably more harm than the person who dumps garbage on your floor, because each load of mind garbage negatively impacts your possibilities and lowers your expectations.” – – Zig Zigler

History and Origin of Global Garbage Man Day

In 2011 John Arwood, an American businessman and the CEO of JDA company, created Global Garbage Man Day. The company specializes in garbage disposal and demolition.  He created this holiday to give recognition to underappreciated men and women in the sanitation field. It is a global holiday because proper trash handling and disposal is an important job all over the world. The holiday serves to recognize all workers in this field. And, it also extends to those in the growing recycling industry.

National Cucumber Day

When is National Cucumber Day, Cukes

When is National Cucumber Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 14

If it’s June, cucumbers are ripening in home gardens and plentiful at your local farmer’s market. That makes today the perfect time to hold National Cucumber Day. Unsurprisingly, among other things, this month is Cucumber Month. Cukes as they are fondly called, are one of the healthiest vegetables you can eat. While it consists of 95 percent water, the rest of it is loaded with healthy minerals and vitamins that are good for your heart, and for your overall health. They are also low in calories and carbohydrates.

The best way to enjoy and celebrate National Cucumber Day is to pull out your recipe book and select a few interesting ways to prepare and consume cukes. We most commonly think of eating cukes in salads, gazpacho, and other recipes where they are eaten raw or uncooked. However, they are good in many cooked recipes, too. Use them as an ingredient in soups and stews. And, you can even make fried cucumbers. Find Cucumber Recipes Now.

Cool as a Cucumber

This is a popular phrase used by many people in a wide variety of settings. Most likely, you’ve used it a number of times, too. But, do you know where it came from?  “Cool as a cucumber” was first coined in 1732 in John Gay’s Poem, New Song on New Similes.

The World's Biggest Cucumber

They grow them big in the United Kingdom. Here are two world records that will be hard to beat:

According to the Guinness World Book of Records, Sebastian Suski in Southampton, Hampshire, United Kingdom grew the longest cucumber. It measured 3 feet 8.64 inches long.

Vincent Sjodin, also from the United Kingdom, holds the world record for the heaviest cucumber. It weighed 29 pounds 8.2 ounces.

Tip: While we all love cukes, large ones are usually overripe and do not taste too good. They become sour and the seeds become tough and chewy.

The Health Benefits of Eating Cucumbers

There’s much more to consuming cucumbers than the crunchy, sweet taste. They are very good for your health, too.

  • Cucumbers are 95% water. That makes them a good food item to hydrate your body.
  • Their fiber content helps to regulate your digestive system.
  • They contain very few calories, aiding in weight control.
  • Do you need to control your sugar intake? Cukes have very few carbs, approximately 4 grams.

Cucumber Trivia and Fun Facts

You eat cukes all of the time. But, what do you know about them other than they taste great? Here are some cucumber trivia and fun facts to make you as wise and cool as a cucumber:

  • While we commonly think of cukes as a vegetable, they are actually classified as a fruit.
  • The plants are fast-growing. A cucumber plant can produce fruit in as little as 50 days.
  • Got halitosis!? Place a slice of cucumber on your tongue for a few minutes. It eliminates your bad breath.
  • Slice and boil a cucumber. It releases a natural stress reducer into the air.
  • After a night of heavy drinking, eat a cucumber before you go to bed. It helps you to minimize a hangover the next day.
  • Cucumbers are a sign of fertility.
  • They are linked to Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture.
  • They reduce and ease facial swelling, especially around your eyes.
  • For instant sunburn relief, puree a cucumber and apply it to sunburned areas of your skin. Try it on minor burns, too.
  • The waxy coating of a cucumber will erase pen ink, crayon, and markers on almost any material or surface..
  • Ancient Romans used it to treat many ailments, including headaches and scorpion bites.
  • Got squeaky hinges, but no WD-40? Eliminate those squeaks with some cucumber juice.

How to Celebrate National Cucumber Day

Here are some cool ways to celebrate and enjoy National Cucumber Day:

  • Eat a few.
  • Plant cucumber plants in your garden. Try a few varieties.
  • If you already have them in your garden and they are ripe, give a few away to neighbors and friends.
  • Use beauty products that contain them as one of the ingredients. There are some great cucumber-based moisturizers.
  • Pull out your recipe book and look for different ways to prepare them.
  • Share your cucumber pictures and recipes on social media.

Today's Quote

That money talks, I’ll not deny. I heard it once. It said, ‘Goodbye’. – – Richard Armour

History and Origin of National Cucumber Day

National Cucumber Day was created in 2023. Despite the fact that this is a relatively new holiday, we did not find the creator or the reason why they created this food holiday. Our speculation is that the founder is a home gardener who loves and grows cucumbers.

June is Cucumber month. During this month home gardeners are planting and tending to their cucumber plants. So, it is logical to place National Cucumber Day in June. Now that leads us to wonder which came first, the day of the month or the holiday? Or, perhaps they were both created at the same time.  Without identifying the creator, we may never know.

We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

About International Omelet Day

When is International Omelet Day? This holiday is always held on June 9

In 2024 we have a brand-new holiday to savor and enjoy. While new holidays are created seemingly every day, this one is an important worldwide celebration. We are celebrating the incredible, edible egg omelet. It’s an egg dish prepared in a popular, easy-to-make way. Yes, today is International Omelet Day. On this June 9 food holiday, we give recognition to a basic food staple that is an important part of the diet of people all over the world. And now we have even more reason to celebrate. Yes, eggs are high in cholesterol. But, researchers now believe the good health benefits outweigh the bad.

Egg omelets are prepared by frying scrambled eggs in a frying pan until they are almost done. Then, we place on top of the eggs, any one or more of a very wide range of fillings. Finally, we fold the omelet in half giving it a half-moon shape and finish cooking the eggs to seal in the wonderful, blend of tasty ingredients. Perhaps the biggest challenge to participation in this day is to determine what fillings to include in your omelet. Somehow, we feel certain you are equal to the task. To complete your meal, may we suggest tomato juice or orange juice? Or, perhaps you prefer a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa.

Did you Know? Yes, they are high in cholesterol. But, researchers now believe the good health benefits outweigh the bad.

Popular Types of Omelets

Have it your way. One of the great things about omelets is you can put almost anything into them, or on them. Here are some of the most popular omelets:

Cheese Omelet – This is by far the most popular. However, what kind of cheese do you use? You can use whatever type of cheese that you desire. While cheddar is the favorite, here in the U.S. American cheese is not far behind. As you look around the world, just about every type of cheese is used.

Western Omelet – Also called a “Denver Omelet”, it’s a bold choice for millions of people. Tucked inside the eggs are diced ham, onions, and sweet green peppers. Personal choice adds or takes away from these ingredients.

Veggie Omelets – Hold the meat and the cheese. This may not be for vegans, as the main ingredient is eggs. However, It’s the omelet of choice for the health-conscious and those of us who do not like meat and cheese. Veggie omelet lovers put almost any kind of vegetable inside of the eggs. Some popular choices are asparagus, broccoli, onions, peppers, spinach, and tomatoes. The bottom line is if you like a particular vegetable, try adding it to your veggie omelet.

After the popularity of these three types of omelets, you will readily find hundreds of recipes for all types of omelets. Many of them are culinary treats of local and regional cuisines. Live on the daring side. When you travel, we encourage you to enjoy the local favorites when you sit down for breakfast.

History and Origin of International Omelet Day

International Omelet Day was created in 2024 by Bob Matthews, from Rochester, New York, and owner of HolidayInsights.com.

Matthews said he was amazed that this day had not yet been created. This holiday is established as an international one to recognize the importance of healthy and nutritious eggs in the diet of people around the world. And so we celebrate the omelet. They are one of the most popular ways of preparing eggs.

When asked about the date, Matthews said there is no special reason behind the date. He documented this holiday on June 8 and simply thought “Why wait!?” By the time he finished documenting the holiday, it was already June 9th in some parts of the world. So, he selected June 9, 2024 to become the first annual celebration of International Omelet Day
