About Celebration of the Senses Day

When is Celebration of the Senses Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 24

We are ecstatic that you have come to your senses and have decided to celebrate this truly important holiday. After all, it is the only wise and rational thing to do. Today is the Celebration of the Senses Day. Celebrating and participating in this June 24 holiday simply makes all the sense in the world. So, c’mon. Use your common sense and party it up big time today!

The five physical senses are hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch. Your body recognizes them thanks to your nose, ears, eyes, skin, and tongue. Some of us were born without one or more of the five physical senses. You may have lost one or more “sense” due to an ailment, an accident, or another cause. Use today to heighten the sensitivity and capability of those you do have. Also, explore potential treatments that could help you to gain it back. Today is not the day to rue what we have lost. Rather, it is an opportunity to celebrate the senses we do have.

In addition to the five physical senses, there are other “Senses”. Researchers tell us there could be as many as many dozen in total. It depends upon your definition. For example, receptors in your body, tell your brain things like temperature and pain.

Your senses are an essential element for a healthy quality of life. They allow us to experience, interact, and communicate successfully with others and with the world around us. We tend to take them for granted. Often, we are only cognizant of them when there is a problem or if we lose them. Use this holiday to recognize their importance in your life. Be thankful that you have all of your faculties. And celebrate each and every one of your valuable senses.

What Are Your Senses?

There are five well-known physical senses. Each sense has a sensory organ. For example, you smell with your nose. The nose is a physical sensory organ of your body. The five physical senses are:

  • Hearing
  • Sight
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Touch

Depending upon who you talk to, there are none, one or several more senses. Some people actually claim there are 12 senses! Here are some of the others. Are they true “Senses”? We will let you be the judge.

Extrasensory Perception (ESP) – Also called the Sixth sense, ESP is the paranormal ability to perceive, predict, or project information without the use of the five physical senses. About 2/3 of us believe in ESP and that we can send messages to and from each other through mind to mind contact. There is no physical sensory organ in your body associated with ESP.

Proprioreceptor – This is a sensory receptor located in the subcutaneous tissue of the body. It detects motion and position of the body. It is a perception of oneself.

Sense of Balance – It’s actually a physical sense. The vestibular system in the inner ear allows us to maintain our balance.

Common Sense – This is the ability to act and behave in a logical and intelligent manner. Many people question if this is truly a sense, or merely an expression. If we are smart, we all use common sense. But, is it a true sense? Researchers are not in agreement.

Other “senses” include temperature, pain, and light. And, some people suggest there are even more.
