About Fatigue Syndrome Day

When is Fatigue Syndrome Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 12

Fatigue Syndrome Day is quite a tiring day. Just thinking about this day makes me tired. As this May 12 holiday nears, I get more and more tired each day. I can’t wait for it to be over. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll take a nap and sleep this day away.

Today recognize the fact that sometimes life is just too tiring. Perhaps you’re tired because you are not getting enough sleep. Perhaps, you’re stressed out. Some people experience chronic fatigue from worrying, or due to problems. These are all common causes of persistent fatigue. Whatever the cause, use today to identify it, and correct it.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is actually a disorder. The major symptoms are feeling tired and weak. Headaches and dizziness may also occur. It’s hard to diagnose, as the symptoms can be caused by many things. If you are always tired perhaps it’s time to visit your general practitioner!? Use today to place that call, and to make an appointment.

Did you Know? Lack of exercise can contribute to fatigue.

How to Celebrate Fatigue Syndrome Day

This is not really a day someone would want to celebrate or participate in. Here are some suggested activities for this holiday:

  • Go right back to bed.
  • Take a nap.
  • Take a siesta.
  • Use up a vacation day and do nothing.
  • Cancel activities for the day.
  • Get the picture, get into the day!
  • If you think you might have CFS, see your general practitioner.

National Endangered Species Day

Giant Panda Bear

About National Endangered Species Day

When is National Endangered Species Day? This holiday is observed on the third Friday in May

National Endangered Species Day is a day to raise awareness about the many animals that are on the endangered special list. It is a time of education and action. There are many ways we can help to keep animals from becoming extinct. On this day the Endangered Species Coalition, the National Wildlife Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Organization and many other conservation groups offer educational programs, seminars, and events, to help us to appreciate the plight of so many animals that are on the Endangered Species List.

The animal kingdom is a very diverse list of creatures that roam the land, sea, and air of our planet. It includes land animals, birds, fish, and sea creatures as well as insects. However, the list of God’s creatures is finite, and the number is decreasing. We all know that the dinosaur and the wooly mammoth have come and gone millions of years ago. In more recent times, we have lost the American Buffalo, Barbary Lion, Great Auk, Carrier pigeon, Blue Whale, and a large range of creatures of all kinds. Much of the lost species are due to the encroachment of humans on animal habitats, as well as environmental destruction and alteration of the animal’s environment.

The endangered species list is filled with animals of all kinds. It includes different types of elephants, rhinos, orangutans, gorillas ,and leopards. You will find both the giant and red pandas on this list. The list contains dolphins, turtles, penguins, and whales.  Plenty of birds, fish,  and insects have made the endangered species list as well.

How to Participate in and Celebrate National Endangered Species Day

Don’t you think it’s time to stop the disappearance of so many animals?

  • On National Endangered Species Day, wildlife and conservation organizations hold educational programs and seminars to teach and inform people about the plight of these animals. They teach us about the need to do our part, to help maintain and protect their habitat.
  • You can contribute to one of the many organizations, whose goal is to protect these animals and their habitats.
  • Learn ways to Go Green, and keep from doing things that harm the environment. After all environmental health is good for the animal kingdom…. and you!
  • And, if you are one of the fortunate few, you might find an opportunity to work directly with efforts to save animals on the Endangered Species List.

Today's Chuckle

“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.” – – Benjamin Franklin

History and Origin of National Endangered Species Day

The 109th U.S. Congress passed S.Res. 431 designating Thursday, May 11, 2006, as Endangered Species Day. This was the first congressional resolution to declare this holiday. In a congressional resolution in 2009, the holiday was declared to be held on the third Friday in May. Based on our research, we believe Congress declares this holiday each year.

All of these annual resolutions named this holiday Endangered Species Day. None of the resolutions called it National Endangered Species Day. However, the existence of congressional resolutions warrants the word “National” in the title.

Don't Fry Friday Day

Sun and Rainbow

About Don't Fry Friday

When is Don't Fry Friday Day? This holiday is observed on the Friday before Memorial Day

Don’t Fry Friday is a very important day for you and your skin. It occurs just as the Memorial holiday begins, and at the start of summer. At this time, sunlight is the most intense. People are seeking the sun and the great outdoors after a long winter. The purpose of today is to educate people and to make them aware of the dangers of overexposure to UVA and UVB rays. These UV rays come from the sun, and from popular tanning booths. They are the primary cause of skin cancer.

Very Important: Skin cancer is very treatable and curable if caught early. Unfortunately, early detection does not always occur. If you have even the slightest suspicion, go get checked out by your doctor…. immediately.

A little sunshine is good for you. It provides important vitamin D, and sunshine brightens your mood. It’s overexposure that damages your skin and can result in skin cancer. There’s a better way to get vitamin D, than from the sun. It is readily available as a vitamin supplement in pill form, usually along with Calcium.

Have a safe and happy summer. Follow the motto for skin cancer prevention: ” Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap” This means slip on a shirt, slop on the suntan lotion (SPF 30 or higher), slap on a hat, and wrap on the sunglasses. Yes, UV rays can damage your eyes, too. In addition, it is recommended that people stay out of the sun during midday of summer when these harmful UV rays are the most intense.

Did You Know? Over 3.5 million cases of skin non-melanomas are diagnosed each year. And, there are over 76,000 cases of skin melanoma a year, most of which are preventable.  Source: American Cancer Society

How to Participate in and Celebrate Don't Fry Friday

Here are a few ideas on how to participate in and celebrate this holiday:

  •  Use suntan lotion with a high SPF.
  • Wear sunglasses.
  • Get some sunlight, but don’t overexpose yourself.
  • Have regular checkups with your doctor.

When is Learn About Composting Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 29

Learn About Composting Day is a great opportunity to “Go Green” and help the environment. You don’t have to be a gardener to participate in this holiday. Everyone can get into the act of recycling plant and vegetable matter into rich and valuable soil. If you are not a gardener, you can give compostable materials you have to a gardening friend. It makes you feel good, knowing you are doing your part to keep our environment a little bit cleaner. You may be surprised at how easy it is to compost. And, everyone can do it. Use this May 29 holiday to begin eco-friendly composting.

As you learn about composting today, you will also see the wide array of ways you can compost. You can start a simple compost pile in your backyard. Or, you can select a range of composters, from compost bins and compost barrels to compost tumblers. You can even use an indoor compost pail. More on Composters and Compost Tumblers.

What to Compost

As you learn about this process of composting, you will be surprised at all the things you can use. It is common knowledge, that you can use garden and yard vegetation, as well as kitchen (vegetable) scraps. But, you can also recycle many other things, including papers, untreated wood, and cardboard. Cardboard paper towels and toilet paper holders are great items to keep out of the waste stream.

You can use compost around your plants, to feed them, keep the weeds down, and help retain soil moisture. If you don’t have a yard, you can give it away to family and friends that do. Your reward will be flowers, vegetables, or herbs from thankful gardeners.

Did you Know?  You can make Compost Tea with your compost materials to feed your indoor and outdoor plants!  It will save you $$$.

Composters

History and Origin of Learn About Composting Day

Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of Holiday Insights created this special day in 2011. This holiday is the result of his love of gardening and a desire to do his part to help the environment.

We are strong advocates of the “Go Green” environmental movement. Why send plant matter to the waste stream when it is easy to recycle these materials into valuable, fertile soil? We believe everyone can practice composting, to leave a better world for our children.

As a Boy Scout leader, Matthews follows the Boy Scout motto “Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle”. Recycling and reusing decayed plant matter is a great way to reuse a wide range of things that otherwise would go unnecessarily into the waste stream.

Clean Up Your Room Day

Vacuuming Bear. When is No Housework Day?

About Clean Up Your Room Day

When is Clean Up Your Room Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 10

Clean Up Your Room Day has arrived. This is a day parents eagerly await……….. and kids dread! There are a sizable number of adults who are not looking forward to this May 10 holiday either.  I don’t know about you, but I’m not looking forward to being cooped up in my room on a beautiful spring day. If we must have a holiday to incent us to vacuum and dust our room, why couldn’t it be in the winter when the weather is lousy!?

Tip: Do you remember the masks we wore during the pandemic? We recommend you put one on before stirring up all that dust.

If you’ve got kids, their rooms may be a vast wasteland, filled with all kinds of “good stuff”. “Messy” is too kind of an adjective to describe the conditions. It’s impossible to walk through the room. Heck, you might not be able to see the far side of it. Every dresser and shelf (and under the bed), is packed with everything imaginable. The dust has been piling up as long as your child has been around. Comfy, cozy, and quite livable to the child, it’s an everyday source of frustration for the “folks”.

To mom and dad’s delight, and every child’s chagrin, Clean Up Your Room Day arrives every May 10th. Get out the shovels. Bring in an industrial-sized dumpster. It’s time for everyone to clean their rooms!

Note to Kids: Clean Up Your Room Day also applies to your parents. You may want to inspect to assure that mom and dad practice what they preach!

How to Celebrate Clean Up Your Room Day

There are many ways to have a successful Clean Up Your Room Day. Here are some suggestions:

  • Apparently, there’s no way around it. Get out the vacuum cleaner and the dust rag. Now, get to work.
  • Make plans to clean your room on the next rainy day.
  • See what fun holidays exist for tomorrow.

History and Origin of Clean Up Your Room Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. We do not know why the creator selected a day to take up the massive chore of cleaning our room. If we have to clean it up, we’d rather do it on a cold and snowy winter day when we are stuck indoors anyways.

This is referred to as a “National” day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. It seems that many of the food and candy-related days have tagged on the word “national” onto the title.  We suspect amid a sugar high, the creators got a little excited, and a wee bit carried away.

About Child Care Provider Day

When is Child Care Provider Day? This holiday is celebrated on the Friday before Mother's Day

Working parents entrust the safety and early development of their children to the many people who work at childcare and daycare facilities. So, it is only right that we celebrate those dedicated personnel with a holiday to give them recognition. And that day is today, Child Care Provider Day. It is also referred to as Daycare Provider Day.

Child Care provider is more inclusive, so most prefer to call it that. Either way you call it, this day gives recognition and appreciation to the millions of people involved with providing care to children of working families. Child care providers have the health and safety of our children in their hands. They spend many hours with your child, teaching them educational, social, and behavioral skills. In some cases, childcare providers spend more waking time with your child than you do!

If you are a childcare provider, we thank you for all that you do for our children.

How to Celebrate Child Care Provider Day

Use today to let your childcare providers know how much they are appreciated.

  • Give them a card, and a big thank you.
  • Small gifts are acceptable, but not a requirement.
  • If you like your childcare provider, the best way of thanking them is to give them referrals.
