Hot Air Balloon Day

Hot Air Balloon. June 5 holiday. When is Because I Can Day? April 24 holiday

When is Hot Air Balloon Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 5

Are you afraid of heights?  If not let’s fly up and away into the bright, clear sky. Today is Hot Air Balloon Day, a June 5 holiday. Let’s celebrate these bright and colorful, lighter-than aircraft. They were invented in France in the 1700s. Albuquerque, N.M. hosts the world’s largest hot air balloon festival each year. Over 750 balloons are at the annual festival.

The first manned lighter-than-air balloon flight was on November 11, 1783. The balloons are used, tethered and untethered for a wide variety of purposes. Beginning in the Civil War, armies them used for reconnaissance. Hot air balloons are still used for military and scientific purposes. And, people used them for travel, going from point A to point B. Nowadays, they are mostly limited to air shows and festivals, and hot air balloon rides from a hobby and entertainment perspective.

Did You Know? It is a tradition to break out a bottle of champagne when a balloon lands. It origin of this tradition is unknown.

Song of the Day: Up, Up and Away by the Fifth Dimension.

Record Height: The record is 68,986 feet. Of course, the pilot and co-pilot needed oxygen masks.

Most Famous Hot Air Balloon Movie Scene:  In the Wizard of Oz, the wizard heads back to Kansas in a balloon, without Dorothy.

Hot Air Balloon Trivia and Fun Facts

Here is a little hot air balloon trivia and fun facts. Use them to impress your friends.

  • The first hot air balloon passengers were not human. In 1783, a rooster, a duck, and a sheep were the first passengers to test the effects of flying in the balloon.
  • On November 21, 1783, Scientist Jean-François Pilâtre De Rozier and aristocrat François Laurent d’Arlandes were the first humans to fly in a hot air balloon. People have flown in them ever since.
  • Also, Jean-François Pilâtre De Rozier was the first hot air balloon crash victim when the balloon exploded as he attempted to break a record while crossing the English Channel.
  • Normal flights do not usually surpass 18,000 feet.
  • Dr Vijaypat Singhania from India holds the Guinness World Book of Records for the highest altitude. On November 26, 2005, he rode a balloon to a height of 68,986 feet. That’s just over 13 miles high!
  • Military forces used balloons as aerial reconnaissance during the French Revolution, the U.S. Civil War, and other wars.
  • In 2022 The Coca Cola Contour Bottle Ballon became the tallest hot air balloon. It measured 185 feet tall from basket to bottle cap.

Hydrogen versus Helium Versus Hot Air Balloons

Highly flammable Hydrogen is the lightest gas on earth. It is also plentiful. Early Balloon and Dirigibles used Hydrogen with often disastrous results. The Hindenburg disaster is the most well-known. On the other hand, Helium is a fairly stable gas. But, it is scarce and therefore, far more expensive. It is not as light as hydrogen. As a result, it carries a lighter payload. Hot air balloons use regular air. Heating the air inside of the balloon causes the air molecules to expand and become lighter than air. The resulting lift occurs after the air inside of the balloon is light enough to overcome the weight of the balloon, the basket, and any human passengers and cargo.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Hot Air Balloon Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Watch a hot air balloon show. Don’t forget your camera.
  • Take a ride in one.
  • Learn more about them.
  • Go to an air show where they are flown.

Yell and scream today’s news at the top of your lungs. Whoop it up. It’s National Hollerin’ Contest Day. Today, your vice is going to be heard. Spivey’s Corner, North Carolina has a population of about 50 people. But, on National Hollerin’ Contest Day, an estimated 5,000-10,000 people come to enjoy the annual National Hollerin’ Contest. Today is a spicy holiday if there ever was one. It’s Herbs and Spices Day, a June 10 holiday. Countless varieties of seasonings are used for culinary purposes. Without them, our food would be very bland and tasteless. In addition to culinary applications, they have a wide variety of medical uses, too.

Do you enjoy eating? Of course, we all do. The basic ingredients in many recipes can be pretty bland. It’s the herbs and spices in those recipes, that enhances and brings out the flavor. From salt and pepper, to basil, oregano, and cinnamon, we use them to create culinary wonders. On a low salt diet!? No problem. There are dozens upon dozens of herbs and spices that you can substitute, to thoroughly enjoy your meal without a lot of salt.

About Go Fishing Day

When is Go Fishing Day? This holiday is always observed on June 18

We heard the fish are biting. Grab your tackle and gear. Today is Go Fishing Day. Now, this June 18 holiday is my kind of day! It’s a day to go out and bring home a healthy, tasty, meal for the family. It’s hard work sitting in a boat all day under a hot sun just waiting to get a nibble so you can set the hook. But, we’re doing it to feed the family. So, no sacrifice is too great.

Who said fishing is a fun and relaxing sport? Fishing is hard work. The pressure to bring home a “mess of fish” to feed the family is almost unbearable. After all, as the “Hunter-gatherer” of the family, you need to bring home the meal or the family might starve.  My wife doesn’t appreciate the difficult task of fishing for long hours under all sorts of weather conditions. The wife thinks we’re just out having fun. Yeah, right, pass me another beer.

How to Celebrate Go Fishing Day

Celebrate today, on the shore or in a boat, with a fishing pole in one hand, and your favorite beverage in the other. And, don’t go home until you have caught your limit of fish!

Need to make a decision, but you don’t know how to decide? Flip a Coin and the answer becomes clear. Today is Flip a Coin Day. Don’t be flippant about this June 1 holiday. It’s the real deal. It’s a day when making decisions is as easy as flipping a coin. We can make both big and small decisions this way. Go ahead, give it a try. The coin toss will always give you the right answer.

This tradition dates back to Julius Caesar. Caesar would take a coin and flip it to make decisions where the right choice was unclear. The correct answer was “heads”, which of course carried his image on the coin.

You can flip a coin to decide on practically any “either-or” question in your life. Mathematically, when you flip a coin, 50% of the time it will land on “heads”. And, 50% of the time, it will come out “tails”.  It’s simple statistics. If you don’t like the decision, will you try for the best two out of three?

Do you have any idea how to celebrate this day? You guessed it…Flip a coin.  Use this method of decision-making for all decisions, and for everything you do today.

How to Celebrate Flip a Coin Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  •  Use a lucky penny or another lucky coin for a coin toss.
  • Do a study. Flip the coin at least ten times. See if it lands on heads 50% of the time.
  • Help out a friend. If you have a friend who is having trouble making a decision, give him a coin to flip.

The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army “lassies” were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home-cooked foods and provided a morale boost to the troops. Soldiers cooked doughnuts in oil inside the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. The Salvation Army’s “first doughnut girl” was Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance.

The Chicago Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in 1938 to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression, and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts and other foods for thousands of soldiers.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. However, given the importance of this day, we believe it warrants the “National” title.

About Take Your Dog to Work Day

When is Take Your Dog to Work Day? This holiday is celebrated the Friday after Father's Day

Have you been working like a dog at the factory or the office lately? Bring your dog and put him in your place. We know he will work hard and do his best. Today is Take Your Dog to Work Day. There is a risk in doing this. We know he won’t complain, as he always wants to spend more time with you. But, what if he does a better job than you!?

They say every dog has its day. No bones about it, that day has arrived. Today, your dog gets to join you at work today. Of course, this assumes that your (wonderful) boss will allow it.

Once he arrives at work, your dog can tag along, following you on all of your work chores. He’ll be at your side all day long. Your dog will frown at those dog-eared papers on your desk. He’ll end the day happy, but dog-tired.

Now, that we’ve had our chuckle, it’s time to recognize that this is a serious holiday for “Man’s Best Friend”. It is sponsored by Pet Sitters International. The objective is to recognize the importance of dogs in our lives as both companions and protectors. The organization also encourages you to help homeless dogs. One way to do so, is to adopt a dog today!

Sorry, but equal rights laws have yet to arrive in the pet world. We have not found a “Take Your Cat to Work Day”, or a “Take Your Parakeet to Work Day”, or ………….

How to Celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day

Once your dog has arrived at your work…now what? What do you do with him? Will there be organized activities and a luncheon in his honor!?

Here are some ideas:

  • Dress your dog in work clothes so he doesn’t look out of place.
  • Show him off.
  • Put him to work doing your job.
  • Take him on a tour of your work.
  • Show your co-worker all of the tricks he can do.
  • Have a luncheon in his honor.
  • Help homeless animals and support organizations.
  • Adopt a dog.

Today's Quote

“The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.” – –  William Bennis
