About National Canoe Day

When is National Canoe Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 26

National Canoe Day is today. Summer has arrived, and it is a perfect time for a canoe ride. Take a canoe out on your favorite waterway on this June 26 holiday, and enjoy the peace and serenity. And, get a little healthy exercise along the way.

Canoes have been around for thousands of years, and have been used by countless cultures around the world. The earliest were dugout canoes made from the trunk of a single tree. They were made as early as 7,600 – 8,200 BC and found in the Netherlands. Carib Indians of the Caribbean first made dugout canoes around 3,500 B.C. They carved out logs and used the canoes to travel between islands. The word canoe originates from the word “kenu” in their native language.

Celebrating this day is a real pleasure. Simply go out in a canoe onto a lake or stream. Take a leisurely ride, and enjoy the scenery. Don’t rush… take your time. You’ll return calm and relaxed after a memorable experience.

Safety first! Make sure to wear an approved life jacket while out on the water. This writer is here today because I had a life jacket on when our canoe tipped over in a fast-running creek.

Song of the Day: Tippy Canoe and Tyler Too. Popular 1840 presidential campaign song, originally called “Tip and Ty”, for Whig party candidate William Henry Harrison.

How to Celebrate National Canoe Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate National Canoe Day:

  • Canoe across a lake or down a lazy river.
  • Take a trek with a planned destination in mind.
  • Race canoes with friends.
  • Go fishing in one.
  • Take a romantic ride in a canoe.
  • Row over to a deserted island for a picnic lunch.

History and Origin of National Canoe Day

All of our research points to 2007 as the year this special day was first celebrated. But oddly, our research did not find the creator of this day. He or she is probably out on a lake in a canoe, enjoying the day way too much to come in and document this day.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. This special day is celebrated in the U.S., Canada, and a handful of other countries. One would wonder why this isn’t called a “World” or “International” day.

We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

National Ballpoint Pen Day

Ballpoint Pen. When is Handwriting Day? January 23 holidays

About National Ballpoint Pen Day

When is National Ballpoint Pen Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 10

Today is Ballpoint Pen Day, a June 10 holiday. We use them just about every day. Most of us have several or even dozens of them around our home and office. They are a common, everyday object.  We might even have one tucked between our ear and head right now. But, let’s not take ballpoint pens for granted. The invention of the ballpoint pen in 1943, can be counted among the great inventions of the 20th century. It’s right up there, with the invention of canned beer! Without it, we would still be using a messy fountain pen, or frequently dipping a quill into an ink jar.

On this day in 1943, brothers Laslo and Georg Biro of Argentina filed a patent for ballpoint pens. Other inventors were working on making a ballpoint pen. The Biro brothers were the first to succeed. The ballpoint pen was originally called a “Birome”. Ballpoint pens hit the U.S. market in 1945 at Gimbel’s department store, selling for $12.50 each!! It became an instant success and the rest is history. The Biro brothers sold their patent to Bic.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Ballpoint Pen Day

There are a lot of ways to celebrate National Ballpoint Pen Day.

  • When you pick up a ballpoint pen today, think about what a convenient tool it is.
  • Put away the pencils for the day and use a ballpoint pen.
  • Write a letter to someone.
  • Buy a package of them.
  • Order them personalized with your name or business on them.

“Your mind needs exercise just as much as your body. That’s why I think of jogging every day.” – – Author Unknown

History and Origin of National Ballpoint Pen Day

While the reason for creating this special day is clear, we found no reference to who is the creator of this day.

There is no presidential proclamation, nor any documentation from the U.S. Congress, to support this as a true U.S. “National” day.

The inventors of the ballpoint pen are from Argentina, causing us to speculate that perhaps the government of Argentina issued a proclamation or resolution, making it a national day in Argentina.

Monkey Around Day

Ape Driving Car, When is Monkey Around Day? July 14 holidays. International Darwin Day

When is Monkey Around Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 14

Life is sometimes too formal and stiff, too serious. We all need a little time to cut loose, act a little goofy, and just fool around. Today is a day to “Go Ape!” Put aside your troubles and worries. Throw off the shackles of stress on everyday living. Lock up your inhibitions in a safe, or a drawer. For today is hereby declared Monkey Around Day! Seriously, this June 14 holiday is a time NOT to be taken seriously. So, let’s all go a little bananas.

Monkeys are clever, intelligent, and social creatures. While they can’t talk orally to us, they are capable of learning numbers and recognize the alphabet. They even solve puzzles. People young and old have a fascination with them.

We all need a day (and probably more than one) to just monkey around and goof off, doing anything that comes to mind. It can and should be a little silly. It can be inane. Or, you can do something wild, crazy, or whimsical. Do something you’ve always wanted to do, but sensibility held you back. In other words, go out and have some untamed fun! Tomorrow, you will be glad that you did.

Movie of the Day: Planet of the Apes. But which one? The answer is easy… every one in the series!

Favorite Band: If they could talk, they would tell you that their favorite band is The Monkees.

Monkey Trivia and Fun Facts

We are not fooling around with this monkey trivia and fun facts. After reading them, impress your friends with your knowledge of the world of apes.

  • Monkeys are a different species of primate from apes, baboons, chimpanzees, and gorillas. But, we won’t tell if you group them all together.
  • Monkeys are native to the tropical rainforests of Africa, Asia, as well as Central and South America.
  • Monkeys living in Central and South America are called “New World Monkeys.” Those living in Asia and Africa are referred to as “Old World Monkeys”.
  • There are ten movies in the Planet of the Apes series. The first was Planet of the Apes in 1968. The latest is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes released in 2024.
  • They love bananas! But, their diet consists of far more than bananas. They eat other fruits, the leaves and flowers of some plants, nuts, and plenty of other vegetables. They even eat the bark and roots of some trees and plants. In addition, they catch and eat birds, insects, and rodents, taking advantage of what’s available in their environment.
  • Howler monkeys have the loudest call. Why, that’s no surprise.
  • They are intelligent. Monkeys have the IQ of a young human toddler. Some have even outperformed humans on cognitive tests.
  • The world’s smallest monkeys are Pygmy Monkeys. An adult has a 5-inch-long body and a 7-inch-long tail. It weighs 4 ounces.
  • Female Spider Monkeys have the longest tail. It is three feet long. However, their body is only two feet long.
  • They are the ninth character in the Chinese Zodiac.
  • A group of monkeys is called a “Troop”.
  • The Burmese sneezing monkey, sneezes whenever it rains. Bless you!
Monkey Business Day

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

The expression “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” originated in 17th Century Japan. Above a door in Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan was a carving of three monkeys covering their ears, eyes, and mouth. The saying is a proverb that represents those who turn a blind eye to wrongdoing. The meaning of the message is we should avoid evil. The roots of this expression come from the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius who is believed to once said “Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety”.

How to Celebrate Monkey Around Day

Celebrate this special holiday, with just about any kind of monkey business. For example, you can:

  • Monkey around. I bet you can think of a number of ways to “monkey around”.
  • Act like a monkey.
  • Put a banana in one hand, and scratch your armpit with the other, as you make monkey noises. You get extra points for doing this in public.
  • Visit monkeys at the zoo.
  • Draw pictures of monkeys.
  • Buy monkey stuffed animals and other paraphernalia.
  • Hang around in trees.
  • Eat bananas.

But, whatever you do, Money Around Day is not a time to be shy, sensible, or logical.

History and Origin of Monkey Around Day

This fun day was created in 2016 by Bob Matthews, of Rochester, NY. Bob is the creator of Holiday Insights. He selected June 14th, in honor of the birthday of his daughter Kimberly. Since she was a little child, Kimberly just loved monkeys and everything about them. And, it doesn’t matter if it is a monkey, ape, chimpanzee, gorilla, or baboon. She loves these primates!!

According to Bob: “There is way too much stress in our everyday lives. We need at least one day to set aside our stress, troubles, and worries, and to just relax and monkey around. Today is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Log Cabin Day

Lincoln Logs

When is Log Cabin Day? This holiday is celebrated on the last Sunday in June

Log Cabin Day brings you back to a quieter, simpler, more rugged era. A couple of hundred years ago, life was far more rugged. Americans moving West (west at the time may have been Ohio or Tennessee) found an untouched wilderness, filled with pristine forests. They built their homes out of logs from the plentiful and majestic forests. This rugged frontier lodgings, inns, and meeting places were solid, long-lasting, and served them well.

Life was rustic and simple. Heat was provided by an open fireplace, where they also cooked their meals. Need air conditioning in the summer? Just open the window (there wasn’t any glass or screening). There was no electricity (no television, stereos or boom boxes blasting, or computers). And, plumbing? Just look back towards the woods at the outhouse. The path to it is well-worn.

This holiday celebrates what was then the “Modern” home in America, and all of the lifestyle that accompanied it. Today is a day to appreciate the history and significance of log cabins. Visit them at historical museums today, or sometime this summer.

Seven early U.S. Presidents were born in log cabins. They are:

  • Andrew Jackson
  • Zachary Taylor
  • Millard Fillmore
  • James Buchanan
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • James Garfield

How to Celebrate Log Cabin Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate Log Cabin Day:

  • Go to a pioneer village museum to see a real log cabin.
  • Build a log cabin in the woods.
  • Build one with Lincoln Logs.
  • Read about rustic frontiersmen.

Today's Quote

“No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.” – – Abraham Lincoln

History and Origin of Log Cabin Day

The Log Cabin Society, founded by Virginia Handy, and the Bad Axe Historical Society, in Michigan, created this annual holiday in 1986. Their objectives included promoting the preservation of Log Cabins, and awareness and education of life during the era in America when log cabins were common.

About International Widows Day

When is International Widows Day? This holiday is always observed on June 23

International Widows Day is a United Nations sponsored day. This June 23 holiday is a day of action., encouraging countries and organizations to strive to eliminate poverty and injustice suffered by millions of widows and their dependents around the world. We may not see it so much in the United States, but it is a serious problem most often seen in impoverished and developing countries.

The UN resolution called upon “Member States, the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, to give special attention to the situation of widows and their children.”It is easy to forget the plight of widows, especially in underdeveloped countries where the male is most often the sole source of income.  Without him, his family likely ends up forgotten and in the street.

How to Celebrate and Participate in International Widows Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in International Widows Day.

  • Think about the widows you know. Is there some way you can support them or make their lives a little better?
  • Consider non-monetary ways to help them out. For example, there may be things around the house in need of repair that a widow is not trained to do.
  • Think about how you can help their children.
  • While this day is intended for widows, you can assist them as well.

Niagara Falls Waterfall Day

About International Waterfall Day

When is International Waterfall Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 16

Today is International Waterfall Day, a June 16 holiday. Pity the person who lives in arid and desert regions. They miss out on the beautiful and plentiful waterfalls that are found all over the world. From water falling a few inches to a foot or more over rocks in a babbling brook, to the thundering cascade of Niagara Falls, people all over the world are absolutely enthralled by waterfalls. The power and sound of the crashing water thrill and amaze onlookers. Each waterfall is unique and beautiful in its own way. Each waterfall has its own character, and no two are quite alike.

Waterfalls put on a show all year long, as the water is crashing and cascading over and down the rocks of the falls at a rapid rate. Waterfall displays are at their best in the spring, when melting snow and spring rains flood the rivers and streams that feed them. Some small waterfalls dry up completely during summer droughts. A temporarily dry waterfall may be of interest, but it does not captivate us as it does when water is rushing over a cliff in a vivid and sheer vertical drop, sending up an endless shower of mist at the bottom of the falls.

Throughout history, humans have been drawn to settle near water and waterfalls. The inescapable lure is understandable. In addition to providing water to drink and bathe, the water provides fishing for both food and sport. Waterfalls are an endless supply of environmentally green energy. They powered sawmills and flour mills long before electricity was invented. The power of the rushing water turns hydroelectric generators, producing clean energy. Waterfalls attract throngs of tourists and a revenue stream from tourism.

The Largest Waterfalls in the World

Determining the largest waterfall in the world is dependent upon what your criteria is. The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela. This waterfall plunges down 3,212 feet to the bottom.  If you are looking to see the widest waterfall in the world, you need to travel to the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Bordering Laos and Cambodia, the Mekong River cascades down Khone Falls, in an amazing 35,376-foot-wide display. Another measure of size is how much water goes over the falls. Inga Falls on the Congo River in Africa takes the crown for the largest volume of water. Over 11 million gallons of water flow over Inga Falls each second. In contrast, Niagara Falls is 2,200 feet wide, and 167 feet tall, and 150,000 gallons of water per second flows over it.

How to Celebrate and Participate in International Waterfall Day

It is simple and oh-so-enjoyable to participate in International Waterfall Day.

  • Plan your trip to a waterfall and make a day of it. See more than one, if you can. Some waterfalls are located in the middle of a town or city, with easy access for viewing.
  • Are you ready for a physical challenge? Reaching many waterfalls requires short or long hikes and involves climbing up and down wooded trails. For many waterfall enthusiasts, a challenging trek from the top to the bottom of the falls and back is just the experience they seek.
  • Plan a picnic lunch at the falls.  Enjoy the water cascading over the falls as you eat.

.PS Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures of your fun-filled and memorable day.

Thoughts for Today

God give me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

History and Origin of International Waterfall Day

This special holiday was created in 2020 by Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY. Matthews said he and his wife love to check out waterfalls, big and small, wherever they go. If getting to a waterfall requires a hike, all the better. Matthews also says “I’ve never seen a waterfall I didn’t like.”

The creation of this special day was long overdue. In researching this holiday, it was amazing that no one had ever before created a day to celebrate and enjoy waterfalls. There are waterfalls all over the world, so this is truly an international day.
