About Random Acts of Kindness Day
When is Random Acts of Kindness Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 17
You can, and should, make this a very special day for someone other than yourself. Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day. And, you know what to do…perform a few unplanned, random acts of kindness. On the February 17 holiday, almost any kind of good deed will do. It does not need to be a huge endeavor. Rather, it can be something small and seemingly trivial. We highly recommend you perform kind acts on as many people as you can.
A random act is like throwing a pair of dice. You don’t know in advance what the outcome will be. To perform random acts of kindness today, don’t schedule or plan what you are going to do. Rather, keep alert for unexpected opportunities to be nice or help someone in need. This is a favorite day of many people and groups. People like the idea of showing a little kindness to others. It’s a fun and good thing to do. And, they like being on the receiving end of this day as well. It makes both the giver and the receiver feel good.
Schools have used this day as an educational event, and to promote the value of kindness. Organizations often use this day to promote their cause and for fundraisers.
Note: Random Acts of Kindness are highly contagious. Sooner or later, you will find others expressing kindness to you.
Today’s Slogan: What comes around goes around.
How to Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day
Kindness is contagious. There are countless ways you can be kind to others. Here are some ideas to get you started during this holiday:
- Be a good Boy Scout and help someone across the street.
- Open a door for someone. This is a somewhat lost act of kindness. While this is often seen as a gentlemanly act, ladies can certainly do this, too.
- Say nice, complimentary things to people.
- Spend some time with the elderly or people who are shut-in. Then, watch them smile.
- Go out of your way to help someone.
- Be hospitable.
- Send a greeting card to someone who is depressed and in need of cheering up.
- Forgive others for their errors and shortcomings.
- Prepare and deliver a meal or baked goods to someone…anyone.
- Help a neighbor or friend with a chore or task.
- Take a minute out of your busy day, and speak to someone who is lonely.

Polish Easter Blessed Breakfast
About Polish Easter Blessed Breakfast
When is the Polish Easter Blessed Breakfast? This feast is always held on Easter Sunday morning
For the Polish culture, Easter is the highest holy day of the church year. After all, it is a celebration of Christ rising from the dead, and our promise of eternal life in Heaven. The Polish Blessed Breakfast on Easter morning is a very special event. After fasting for 40 days during lent, the enormous breakfast is an inviting feast, that’s certain to put back on some of the weight loss in fasting.
But first, let’s dial back to the day before… Holy Saturday. On the morning of Holy Saturday, families fill a basket with portions of items for serving at the breakfast on Easter morning. This includes bread, meats, eggs, sweet bread, and more. It even includes salt, pepper, butter and horseradish, and wine. Yes, breakfast includes wine!
In Christian churches with large Polish communities, there is a special Holy Saturday morning ceremony. If you have never attended, it is a sight to behold. Just prior to the ceremony the church is abuzz with cheerful conversation and laughter. After all, the long Lenten season is past, and the celebration of tomorrow’s Easter is truly something to put you in a celebratory mood. In addition, outside of the church walls, spring is breaking out all over. As the ceremony is about to begin, the participants open all of the items in their baskets, in preparation for their being blessed. The pleasant aroma is all but overwhelming.
The ceremony is relatively short. A priest says a few prayers and blesses the baskets with holy water. Upon completion of the ceremony, the congregation re-wraps the food and takes the now-blessed basket home.
Spreading the Easter Blessed Breakfast Tradition
My Polish mother-in-law asked the priest in her non-polish parish to start this tradition. He gladly obliged. Only a few people showed up for that first event, not many more than our immediate family. As the years passed, it grew in popularity. Now, children bring in their Easter baskets to receive a blessing.
Then, when my mother-in-law passed, my wife helped to establish a Blessing of the baskets on the Saturday before Easter at our church. Again, attendance grew with each passing year.
We encourage you to start this wonderful tradition at your church.
The Polish Easter Blessed Breakfast Tradition
After Easter Sunday morning mass, it is time for the traditional Polish Easter breakfast.
- In preparing for breakfast, take all of the foods from the blessed basket. Cut Them into enough pieces for everyone who is there.
- Pour the blessed wine back into the wine jug or bottle, so all of the wine is now blessed. Then, pour the wine is then into decanters or directly into individual glasses at the table.
- Pass the dishes with the blessed food around the table. Each person takes a piece.
- Next, pass the blessed salt, pepper, horseradish, and butter around the table.
- No one is allowed to taste the blessed food until everything has been passed around.
- Now, you begin with the sliced blessed egg (no one seems to know why this is first).
- After eating the egg slice, raise your wine glasses in a toast.
- After the toast, anything on your plate is fair game to eat.
Notes:
- Different families may have differences in the foods and variations of the traditions.
- People with health issues or allergies, can pass on salt, gluten, high-carb foods, or nuts.

About Pistol Patent Day
When is Pistol Patent Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 25
“Shoot! I don’t have a Pistol Patent.” If this thought is going through your mind right now, then this day is for you. You should aim to get a patent today. But first, rifle through your desk to find documentation about the gun you want to your patent and blueprints of it. Why you ask!? Simply because today is Pistol Patent Day, a February 25 holiday.
To get a pistol patent, you must have a new design for a gun. Pull out your pistols from your locked gun safe, and examine them closely. Is there some way they could be improved, or altered? I’m sure you can quickly whip up an original design for a pistol, and lay down the permit application fees and such, right? If not, how can you participate in this day? …. Absolutely! Celebrate your right to bear arms.
Americans have always owned arms. In early American history, guns were a necessity to hunt for food as well as protection. Back in the days of the Old West, everyone was “packing”, including many of the ladies. When we think of Pistol Patent Day, we think about the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. This amendment provides Americans with the “right to bear arms”. It also reminds us of the National Rifle Association (NRA), an organization that staunchly supports gun rights. It is a huge issue in America today with strong emotions on both sides of the issue.
Did you Know? Samuel Colt invented the revolver, a pistol with multiple chambers for bullets. He patented this gun in Europe in 1835, and in the United States in 1836.
How to Celebrate Pistol Patent Day
Here are a few ways yu can celebrate this important holiday:
- Read the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in its entirety.
- Apply for a pistol patent, if you have a new design.
- Buy a new pistol.
- Go to the gun range and practice shooting with your pistol.
- Do you have a gun safe? If not, buy one for safety’s sake.
- Watch an Old West movie.

The creator of this special day is unknown. It is most likely a gun proponent or the NRA.

History and Origin of National Pistachio Day
Despite our extensive research efforts, we did not find the creator or the origin of this day. We had the opportunity to research this day, along with a national pistachio organization. The group approached us because they didn’t understand why this day could be in February. They wanted to move this day or create a new one to celebrate the September harvest of the pistachio crop. They also wanted to make the new day a national one. Making it a true “National” day proved to be too long of a process and too time-consuming. They felt that congress had more important things to do. As a result, this is not a true “National” day.

Polish Paczki Day
About Polish Paczki Day
When is Paczki Day? In Poland: Celebrated on Fat Thursday, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. In the United States: Celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
Today is Polish Paczki Day. The Paczkek has been around for a long time. It was created in the Middle Ages when the King of Poland brought French chefs into his castle to make pastries for Shrove Week. Shrove Week began on Fat Thursday, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, and the start of Lent. The week ended on Fat Tuesday, the Day before Ash Wednesday. This super sweet treat became instantly popular in Poland, and it almost immediately became a tradition to eat Paczki on Fat Thursday in Poland. Fat Thursday soon became also known as Paczki Day.
How to pronounce it: Punch-Key
Did You Know? The largest Paczki Day celebration is held in Buffalo, NY., complete with a parade.
Don't Call it a Donut!
On the outside, the visual appearance of Paczkek looks very much like a donut. It is fried in oil, like a donut. However, don’t mistake it for a donut. The dough used to make Paczki consists of richer, somewhat different ingredients. It contains more sugar and eggs. It also has a little grain alcohol, which keeps the oil from penetrating deeply into the dough. This gives them a fluffier composition. Properly made, it is also larger and rounder than a donut.
During the Middle Ages, Paczki people first filled with pork fat. It didn’t take long for bakeries and common folk in the Middle Ages to begin using sweet fillings, including prunes, apricots, raspberries, lemons, and custard. Over a few hundred years, many other sweet fillings came into use. Today, we have gluten-free Paczki available, too. The finished product is either glazed on the outside, dusted, or rolled in powdered sugar.
Did You Know? Paczki is the plural form of the word. The singular form is “paczek”. If you ever see it spelled as “Paczkis”, it is incorrect!
The Pre-Lenten Celebration and History
In the Middle Ages, it was popular for Christians to empty their cupboards of lard, sugar, eggs, fruit, and other sweets in the week before Ash Wednesday. Beginning on Fat Thursday, they would have a feast on these leftovers, before the fasting season of Lent began. Paczki was one wonderfully sweet way to use up some of these supplies. On this day, people did not eat just one paczek. They ate several.
In Poland, Paczki Day has always traditionally been celebrated on Fat Thursday. As Polish pilgrims came to America, they brought Paczki and the tradition of Paczki Day with them. Somewhere along the way, for some unknown reason, people began celebrating Paczki Day on Fat Tuesday.
If you’ve never had Paczki, today is your once-a-year chance to enjoy them. You’ll most likely need to go to a Polish bakery and stand in a cheerful line of patrons, waiting patiently for their chance to select among several or more fillings. You may find a few other stores that sell them, but you’ll miss the pleasant experience at your local Polish bakery.
For the diet conscious – Not to put a damper on your enjoyment of this day, but a single paczek has loads of calories and carbs. Our study found it has 329-480 calories and 49-55 carbs. After consuming them, it might be best to head straight for the gym!
If you are going to participate in Paczki Day, make sure to pronounce it correctly. It sounds like “Punch-Key”.
Paczki are properly consumed just one day of the year, on Paczki Day. To properly make them, bakeries prepare them fresh on Paczki Day. Most bakeries follow this practice. It results in long lines at the bakery. When the bakery runs out, they’re out until Paczki Day next year.
How to Celebrate Polish Paczki Day
Like any food holiday, this is a day to enjoy a delicious treat. Despite the high carb and calorie count, eat a few of them today. Then, you can diet tomorrow.
- Today, it’s all about Paczki. Find a Polish bakery and buy a dozen for you and your family.
- Buy some and bring them to your workplace to share with your coworkers.
- Give some to your friends. They will love them. While they are enjoying a paczki, tell them a little about Polish customs around the Lenten and Easter season.

History and Origin of Polish Paczki Day
We know a lot about Paczki and its origin. However, we know very little about the creation of this holiday.
We do know that Paczki Day in Poland started in the Middle Ages. Poles celebrate it on Fat Thursday. Fat Thursday probably became known as Paczki Day, as it sounds so much better than Fat Thursday. Then, like any other fun holiday, Paczki Day spread to the United States and many other countries in the world.
It is a mystery why the United States celebrates it on Fat Tuesday rather than Fat Thursday, as celebrated in Poland where it originated.

About Open That Bottle Night
When is Open That Bottle Night? This holiday is held on the last Saturday in February
Open That Bottle Night is one of the few special events, that is proclaimed as an evening event. This means that you can begin to celebrate at 5:00 pm. Now, as I recall, “It’s five o’clock somewhere!!”Importantly, don’t drink alone. Enjoy a glass or two with friends, or that special someone. It’s certain to be a fun night. It will be a fun night.
Open That Bottle Night has a very special purpose. Dorothy Gaither and John Becher created this day to encourage people to reconnect with each other over a good bottle of wine or champagne. Short of that, a bottle of Scotch or Bourbon will certainly suffice. But importantly, it is not a day to drink alone or to binge drink. Rather, you should open a bottle with your spouse, lover, family members, or good friends, especially those whom you may have lost touch with over the years. Having a spat with someone? Share a bottle of wine with them and iron out those differences. After all, life is too short to argue or fight.
Tonight’s Slogan: Live Simply, Laugh Often, and Wine a lot!
Important: Please drink responsibly. And, if you do drink, don’t drive.
How to Celebrate Open That Bottle Night
For adults, this is a wonderful day to celebrate.
