History and Origin of Plan a Solo Vacation Day

The creator and his or her reasons why they created this day, is a mystery to us. This seems odd. The creator promotes a bold and exciting adventure, yet was not adventuresome enough to document it for the rest of us to better understand and enjoy this special day! I don’t know about you, but that won’t stop me from planning and ultimately taking a vacation all by myself.

We suspect that someone in the travel industry created this day.

We also suspect this day was established on March 1, as it often takes weeks and months, to put vacation plans in place…… scheduling time off from work, booking flights and hotel rooms, etc.

This holiday appears to have begun around 2018.

This Day in History

While this is certainly an important and fun holiday, there are other notable happenings on this date. Here are another couple of happenings on this date:

  • Yellowstone becomes the U.S.’s first national park. (1872)
  • U.S. launches Explorer I, its first satellite. (1958)
  • Ron Howard, actor, director, “Opie” on TV series “Andy Griffith” was born on this day in 1954.

National Pi Day

Pi Symbol. When is National Pi Day? March 14 holiday

When is National Pi Day? This holiday is always celebrated on March 14

Today is National Pi Day, a March 14 holiday. It celebrates Pi, a mathematical concept and a number that never ends….at least no one and no computer has found the end yet. Often, we round it off to 3.14. If you are a mathematician, this is your day. For National Pi Day is a celebration of mathematics. And, more specifically…. it celebrates “Pi”.

So, what is Pi? Pi is a constant used to calculate the circumference of a circle from the circle’s radius or diameter. It is an irrational number, meaning you can calculate to an infinitesimal number of decimal places. Computers have been used to calculate and have not found the end decimal place, meaning there isn’t one.

Today is the birthday physicist Albert Einstein. Einstein was born on March 14, 1879. The date is also represented as 3.14. We strongly suspect some combination of these two facts is why someone created the day on March 14th. However, “Pi” was around long before Albert Einstein was born.

A Little Pi Day Trivia: On Pi Day in 2004, Daniel Tammet recited 22,514 to digits.

How to Celebrate National Pi Day

Here are some ways you can celebrate National Pi Day:

  • Go ahead and calculate Pi to as many decimal places as you can.
  • Have a Pi Party.
  • Bake a pie.

Pecan Day

Pecan Day Pie. March 25 holidays

When is Pecan Day? This holiday is always observed on March 25

Ask anyone and they will tell you that today is a rather nutty day. That’s because today is Pecan Day, a March 25 holiday. The trees are the only nut tree native to North America. They are most common in the southern U.S. This is a very good reason to celebrate this day. However, the purpose of today is to commemorate March 25, 1775, the day George Washington planted a pecan tree at his Mount Vernon estate.

The roots of pecans run very deep. Native Americans harvested them as a source of food for perhaps a thousand years before the arrival of European settlers. During colonial times, the trees became popular with early European settlers, who foraged through the woods to find pecans. By the early 1770s, the trees were being grown in Long Island, New York farms. Around that time, Thomas Jefferson was also growing them on his plantation at Monticello. He had brought them up from the southern United States. In 1775, Thomas Jefferson gifted a pecan tree to George Washington, who planted it on his estate at Mount Vernon. From North America, pecan trees grew in popularity around the world. Today, these trees can be found growing on every continent except Antarctica.

If you don’t get enough of this popular nut today, don’t worry. Next month is National Pecan Day.

A Little Pecan Trivia

Pecans belong to the hickory family.

There are over 1,000 varieties of pecans.

Pecans aren’t technically nuts. From a technical standing they are, a fruit!

Mature trees produce nuts every other year.

Mature plants produce nuts for 50-60 years.

The trees live up to 300 years and grow up to 150 feet tall.

90% of the worldwide production comes from the United States.

How to Celebrate Pecan Day

Here are some nutty ways to enjoy this food holiday:

  • Crack open and eat a few pecan nuts.
  • Have a slice of pecan pie.
  • Make pecan pie yourself.
  • Give a pie to a friend.

Peach Tree. Peach Blosom Day. March 3 holiday.

About Peach Blossom Day

When is Peach Blossom Day? This holiday is always observed on March 3

Peach Blossom Day is Today. This March 3 holiday celebrates peach blossoms. It is also for girls to celebrate being girls. Does that sound a little strange or confusing? The connection is at the heart of the objective of this holiday. Read on………

Peach trees produce pretty, scented blooms in early spring. They are the promise of a sweet crop in mid to late summer. The attributes of peach blossoms include: pretty, delicate, dainty, and sweet smelling. These are all feminine traits. As a matter of fact, calling a young lady “peach blossom” is a term of endearment to some. It’s a peachy-keen thing to do. Guys, give it a try. Call her a “Peach” and see if love blooms. We think it will!

The roots of this day also trace directly back to Japan. A Doll Festival is held in Japan every year on March 3rd. This is also when peach trees bloom in Japan. The festival celebrates the blossom and ties in similarity to girls. Simply said, it’s an opportunity for girls to celebrate being girls.

Now, put these threads of information together, and you celebrate sweet and lovely girls… our wonderful peach blossoms!

Note: There is a Peach Blossom Festival in Hunan China on March 3rd. It coincides with the annual blossoms opening on peach trees in Hunan province.

How to Celebrate Peach Blossom Day

This is a fun holiday. Thus, you can celebrate it in many ways.

  • Give the girls in your family dolls and peach blossoms.
  • Give a doll to less fortunate children.
  • Call all the girls you see a “peach”.
  • Serve peach pie for dessert tonight.

About National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

When is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day? This holiday is always observed on April 2

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, an April 2 holiday, celebrates the infamous and beloved “PB and J” sandwich. It’s the favorite lunchtime sandwich of American kids, and many adults, too. Some kids practically live on Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. Be creative and daring. While strawberry jelly is by far the most popular, there’s no requirement for the type of jelly.

While you may focus on PB&J sandwiches, there are more things you can put peanut butter and jelly on. Toast is a good choice. English muffins are another good candidate. May we suggest peanut butter and apple jelly on your English muffins? It’s a great combination. Melba toast is another good one. And don’t forget snack time. Put peanut butter and jelly on a cracker for a great snack! Moms and dads often put peanut butter on celery for a healthy shack. add some jelly today.

The Great Sandwich Debate: How should you slice your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or any sandwich for that matter? It’s an ageless debate. Do you slice a sandwich diagonally to form two triangles, or do you slice it across the middle, resulting in two rectangular halves? Don’t expect us to chime in with our opinion. Either way, we will make half of you upset with us! So, let’s cut to the chase….. the right way to slice your sandwich is the way mom did it when you were a kid.

How to Celebrate National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

  • Let’s start this day with a peanut butter and jelly donut. C’mon, admit it. You’ve loved this donut since you were a kid.
  • Next, for lunch a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread is a must.
  • Take the challenge. See if you can have something with PB&J for breakfast, lunch dinner, and nighttime snacks. We just know you can do it!
  • Be creative. Try it on something you’ve never put it on before.

Meteor Watch Day

Asteroid Meteor Watch Day, June 30 Holidays. Near Miss Day. March 23 holiday

About Meteor Watch Day

When is Meteor Watch Day? This holiday is always observed on June 30

We sure hope that the weather in your area calls for clear, moonless skies tonight. Today is Meteor Watch Day, a June 30 holiday. The warm June nights are a perfect time to look to the skies for meteor showers. Will you be lucky enough to see meteors streaking across the night sky? We sure hope so.

Also called “Shooting Stars” or “Falling Stars”, meteors are space dust and ice that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Meteors can be as small as a speck of dust. As they enter the atmosphere at high speeds, they burn up, producing light as they streak across the night sky while tumbling towards the earth. Sometimes, you see them streak across the sky and disappear at the horizon. Other times, they end suddenly, burning out right before your eyes.

Seeing a shooting star is a sign of good luck. With a little luck, you can see a meteor on just about any night of the year. But, the best time to see meteors is during a meteor shower. There are several meteor showers each year. The best annual show is the Perseid Meteor shower each August.

Asteroids Versus Meteors

The terms Asteroid, Meteor, and Meteorite are often confusing. Here are the definitions:

Asteroids are objects in space that orbit the sun. They are of any size in space. They are sometimes called “space rocks”. It’s the big ones that we worry may potentially hit the earth and cause catastrophic damage.

Meteors are asteroids that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the earth’s atmosphere, putting on a light display as they streak across the sky.

Meteorites are small meteors, sometimes as small as a grain of sand. A meteor that survives the atmosphere to hit the earth’s surface is called a meteorite.

Comets – consist mostly of ice and dust. It orbits the sun or comes from the outer reaches of the solar system. They develop a tail as they near the sun and the sun heats them up.

How to Celebrate Meteor Watch Day

  • Head outdoors on a clear June night. Look up at the sky and watch for meteors.
  • Learn more about meteors that struck the earth. You will be amazed at the danger they can do.
  • If your camera has a night setting, bring it along. If you’re really lucky, you might capture a picture of a meteor as it tumbles toward the earth.

History and Origin of Meteor Watch Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Perhaps, it was a stargazer too captivated by the mystical beauty of the heavens to bother with the trivial task of documenting this holiday.

We do find it odd that Meteor Watch Day is held on a day when there are no known major meteor showers (see major meteor shower events above)

Several site visitors speculate that this day was created on this day to commemorate June 30, 1908, when a meteor explosion in Siberia knocked down trees in a 40-mile radius and struck people unconscious some 40 miles away. We tend to agree with this theory.

This Day in History

Here are some things that happened on this day:

French acrobat Blondin crosses over Niagara Falls on a tightrope.  (1859)

A giant fireball, most likely from an air burst of a large meteoroid or comet flattens 80 million trees near the Stony Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate, Russia. (1908)

Michael Phelps, American Olympic multiple gold medalist in swimming was born on this day in 1985.
