When it comes to food and symbols of the season, apples are a huge part of the Fall scene. The apple harvest is in. We’re making apple sauce, and apple pies, and enjoying a cup or two of hot, spiced apple cider mull. That makes today the perfect day to celebrate Apple Cider Day! If you like apples, and millions of us do, you can’t go through the Fall season without enjoying an occasional glass or two. When you look at this clear golden nectar of the apple, you know you’re in for a sweet and pleasant treat. So, enjoy this November 18 holiday with a fresh from the press glass of apple cider.

Did You Know? There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples worldwide. About 2500 varieties exist in the U.S. Of these, 100 apple varieties are grown commercially in the U.S. Just 15 of those varieties make up 90% of total production. They are Red Delicious, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Fuji.

The History of Apple Cider

This holiday has been around for just a short time. But, apples have been around for thousands of years. As you know, apple trees were first recorded in the Garden of Eden. We don’t know if Adam and Eve ever pressed the forbidden fruit into cider. We know that since the days of early civilizations, apples have been pressed to extract the juice. However, those early civilizations fermented apple juice into hard cider. Hard apple cider has always been popular. At the same, it has always competed with even more popular beer and wine. It runs a distant third to these two alcoholic beverages.

Outside of the United States, when people speak of apple cider, they are referring to the fermented hard cider. In the U.S., it is defined as the juice pressed from the apples and is unfermented.

How to Make Apple Cider

There is just one ingredient…… apples. To make apple cider, the apples are roughly ground up into a mash. The mash is then put through a press where the juice is squeezed out. That’s all there is to it! the resulting apple cider is then consumed as a drink either cold or at room temperature or made into hot cider mull. See hot apple cider mull recipe.

If you purchase apple cider from a grocery store, you will find consistent flavor. That’s because each manufacturer uses a certain variety of apples, or a combination of varieties, to make the juice. It results in a consistent flavor when you buy cider from grocery-bought cider. Store-bought cider has preservatives and is also pasteurized, which many say reduces the flavor.

We believe the best apple cider is found at your local cider mill. You local cider mill presses it fresh, often while you watch. And it contains no artificial preservatives. If local laws allow, it is not pasteurized either. The flavor from your local mills may or not be consistent. They will often use the apples that are ripening at the time that you visit. As the Fall season progresses, different varieties mature, and the flavors are somewhat different. Some of the larger cider mills will press different batches, allowing you to select and buy it made from your favorite apple.

Apple Cider and Your Health

Not only does apple cider taste good, but it’s also good for you, too. Like fresh apples, the cider contains healthy antioxidants and polyphenols. This helps to reduce inflammation and lower your risk of heart attacks and other heart diseases. It is a good source of potassium. Apple cider helps to prevent plaque build-up in arteries and can even lower the risk of developing Type II Diabetes. Cinnamon lowers blood sugar by improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin. So, add some cinnamon, to lower your risk of diabetes.

How to Celebrate Apple Cider Day

It’s very easy to celebrate this holiday. Gather your family and hop in the car. Your destination is the local cider mill. Upon arrival, buy your favorite variety of fresh apples. And, pick up a gallon or two of apple cider. When you get home, have it your way. You can have it as a cold drink, at room temperature, or you can make hot apple cider mull.

History and Origin of Apple Cider Day

We did not find any information on who created Apple Cider Day, or when this special day was first celebrated. We traced the roots of this holiday back to 2014. Based on our research, we believe this holiday began in the United Kingdom. We also found a single reference to “Hot Mulled Cider Day” in 2010. It appeared to be a one-time, localized event.

There is not very much written about this day. Despite its lack of popularity up to now, we believe it deserves recognition. Apples are a big part of the Fall scene and their popularity warrants this special day.

We found an occasional reference calling it “National” day. We did not find a congressional or presidential proclamation making this day a true national day.

America Recycles Day, a November 15 holiday, encourages us to recycle, and use products made from recycled material. Certainly, recycling is not difficult. It sends less material to the waste stream, and it results in consuming less of our precious and limited natural resources.

According to the National Recycling Coalition, America Recycles Day “is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products”.

Use this special day to create awareness of the importance of recycling, and to increase recycling. The world will thank you for it. Even if you practice recycling today, there is probably more you can do. We encourage you to look around at home, at work, or in school, to identify ways you can practice recycling. Take an active role in encouraging others to recycle, too.

The Boy Scouts of America have the right slogan for this topic: “Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle”.

Did You Know? According to a presidential proclamation by President George W. Bush, each person in America produces about four pounds of waste every day!

Recycling Trivia and Facts

Americans send over 290 million tons of trash to the waste stream each year.
The average American throws out 4.9 pounds of trash each and every day.
Cardboard can be recycled 7 or more times.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that grass clippings and yard waste is the second-largest portion of landfill waste in the U.S. This is an amazing fact. Grass clipping and yard waste are compostable. Basically, most, if not all of these items should never go to a landfill.
Aluminum cans are the most recycled item in the U.S. Yet, it only puts a small dent into the potential recyclable materials currently going to the waste stream.
Recycling one ton of aluminum cans saves 21 barrels of oil.
Approximately 2.5 million plastic bottles are used every hour in the U.S. Let’s recycle all of it.
One ton of recycled plastic saves around 685 gallons of oil.
Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees and 380 gallons of oil.
Do you want to save 250 million trees? We can accomplish this if Americans recycle 100% of paper products.
In New York City, the cost of recycling a ton of trash is $300 more than the cost of sending it to a landfill.
Sweden only sends about 1% of trash to landfills. It incinerates trash to make energy. Sweden even imports trash from other countries to generate energy.

How to Celebrate America Recycles Day

First, reduce the amount of materials you put into the waste stream.
Next, find ways to conserve our limited natural resources.
Then, buy a composter or start a compost pile in your yard.
Stop putting grass and other yard waste at the curb for the garbage men to take to a landfill. Rather, compost it.
Above all, encourage your local, state and federal governments to promote waste reduction programs.
If items you are about to throw in the trash have value, donate them.

President George W. Bush issued a presidential proclamation declaring November 15, 2004, as America Recycles Day. The roots of this day go back to 1997.
