About Paperback Book Day

When is the Paperback Book Day? This holiday is always on July 30

Take a break today. Grab a paperback book in your favorite genre and spend some quality time reading it. Today is Paperback Book Day. This July 30 holiday is the perfect time to curl up to a real book and immerse yourself in an exciting and interesting story. Fiction or non-fiction, whatever your genre choice, you’ll have a relaxing time reading a paperback book today and every day!

In today’s electronic world, Ebooks are becoming increasingly more popular. But, most people still agree, that reading a physical book is far more enjoyable. Real books have a comfortable and familiar feel about them. They also have a familiar and pleasant smell. There’s an enjoyable feeling readers get, as they hold the book and turn pages. It’s just not the same when you hold an Ebook, swiping pages as you go.

The Evolution of Paperback Books

Back in the day…. before the 1800s, books were bound in hardcover. Hardcover books were large and leather-bound, making them heavy. Many people could not afford them. Then, publishers began to print books with hard cardboard covers, making them a little lighter and a little less expensive. The Penguin Publishing Company in London, England first began publishing paperback books on July 30, 1835. Smaller and much lighter, they were produced at a fraction of the cost of hardcover books.

Paperback books became affordable to the general public and immediately became a huge success. Penguin Publishing Company produced 3 million paperback books in the first 12 months. Before 1835, a few other publishers had tried unsuccessfully to print paperback books. American Robert Fair de Graff was the first to create the “Pocket Book” in 1939. It was published by Simon &Schuster. It was 4″ X 6″. 1.5 million pocketbooks were sold in the first year for just 25 cents each.

History and Origin of Paperback Book Day

The history of the creation of paperback books is pretty clear. However, we have yet to identify the creator of this day and why he/she created it. It’s pretty clear why this date was chosen, on this date in 1835, Penguin Publishing Company in London, United Kingdom began printing paperback books. We traced this special holiday back to 2012. We speculate that someone in the publishing business created this day. If so, it was most likely the Penguin Publishing Company

A couple of websites incorrectly refer to it as “National Paperback Book Day”. In the earliest recording of this day, the word “National” was not included in the title.

Neither the U.S. Congress nor any President of the United States has proclaimed this holiday to be a true “National” day.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is so important to distinguish and identify true national days.

About National Nude Day

When is National Nude Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 14

National Nude Day is a way to keep cool on a hot, sticky summer day. So, take it off……take it all off. Importantly, this July 14 holiday is not a lewd or sexual day. Rather, it is a day to appreciate the beauty of the human body.  You can go skinny dipping, suntan by the pool, or walk around the house in your birthday suit.

Sorry, we will not display pictures of people in the buff on this website. But, we certainly will talk about it.

We will not suggest that this is right or wrong. We simply desire to make you aware of this holiday. Snicker if you will. But, please don’t put the “sleaze” into this holiday.

Important Note: Sorry, as a kid-safe site, we will not include or point you toward pictures or any other offensive material. Our goal and purpose is to report and document the holidays for fun purposes.

Did You Know? In the early 1970s, “Streaking” was the rage. People would run buck naked through a sports arena, concert, or another venue where people were gathered.

Interestingly, we found a lot of sites promoting Nude Day T-shirts. But, isn’t this problematic? How can you wear a T-shirt on National Nude Day!??

The Bare Naked Truth About National Nude Day

National Nude Day is a serious and special day. There are a sizable number of nudist groups around the world. They are not perverts. Rather, Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be displayed.

Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”. Even the conservative city of Buffalo, NY gets in on the act, holding an annual nude bike ride, encouraging participants to wear as little as they want.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Nude Day

There are many things you can do to join in on the fun on National Nude Day. Here are a few ideas:

About National Pina Colada Day

When is National Pina Colada Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 10

This holiday will have you singing and humming the Pina Colada Song all day long. It’s mid-summer, and the weather is hot and humid. It’s only natural, that you imagine yourself lying on a lounge chair under the palm trees on a tropical, sunbaked beach or deserted island. There are warm gentle breezes wafting in the air. You hear the peaceful sound of the ocean lapping at the shore just a few feet away as you reach for a fruity, ice-cold tropical drink. If you listen closely, you might also hear a steel drum band in the distance. Ahh yes, it’s the perfect way to spend a summer day. This is the ideal way to celebrate National Pina Colada Day, a July 10 holiday.

You can enjoy a pina colada anywhere in the world at any time of the year. It’s the national beverage of Puerto Rico. But, the best place to enjoy this alcoholic summer cooler is on a beach on a tropical island. So, book your flight to an island getaway today!

Song of the Day: “Escape”(1979) by Rupert Holmes. It is better known as The Pina Colada Song. This is one of those classic songs that never loses its popularity.

It’s easy to celebrate this day… enjoy a frosty Pina Colada. If you can do so, while on the beach on a tropical island, you will indeed have a perfect day!

Origin of the Pina Colado Beverage

There are several stories about how Pina Coladas were first created, and who created it.

According to legend, sometime in the 1800s, a pirate named Captain Robert Cofresi sailed the Caribbean with his notorious pirate crew. To improve morale, he concocted the Pina Colada. Starting with Rum, the drink of choice among pirates, he added coconut and pineapple juices, serving it in a coconut shell. Did it improve morale? Perhaps. We’ll never know for certain, but it sure tasted good! The recipe was allegedly lost upon Cofresi’s death in 1825, and with it went any official record of the drink.

More than a century later, in 1954, the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico was seeking to create a new signature drink. The hotel management gave this task to Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the hotel’s Beachcomber Bar. After a few days of experimenting, the Pina Colada was created (or re-created) on August 16, 1954. Another similar story suggests that Ricardo Garcia, a bartender from Barcelona working at the same bar and hotel, also claims to have created the Pina Colada on this same date.

It would certainly be nice to definitively separate fact from fiction around the creation and history of this great drink. Meanwhile, we choose to sip on a Pina Colada, as we ponder this issue.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Pina Colada Day

Here’s refreshing ways to enjoy National Pina Colada Day:

  • Order one at a bar or restaurant.
  • Make them fresh at home.
  • Have a Pina Colada on a tropical beach.
  • Listen to the Pina Colada song. Sing along to the song.
  • Book a vacation to a tropical beach where you can sip on pina coladas all day long.
  • Hold a tropical island-themed party. You know the perfect beverage to serve at the party.
  • Take pictures of your drinks and share them on social media.

Did You Know? You can buy this beverage pre-mixed in a liquor store in most states.

We encourage you to enjoy the holiday. It’s a fun day. But, please drink responsibly.  If you are going out to celebrate, have a designated driver.

Today's Quote

History and Origin of National Pina Colada Day

It is believed that the “Pina Colada Song” was the inspiration for this special holiday. In the early 1980s, shortly after the song was released in October, 1979, this holiday was created. We have not yet discovered who created it.

This holiday was originally called Pina Colada Day. Around 2010, it began to be called National Pina Colada Day. This holiday is not a true “National” day. It has been in use for thousands of years, likely more than 5,000 years.  Most ancient cultures used it in some form (often along with face and body painting). Ancient Sumerian men and women used lipstick. They used lipstick with embedded crushed gemstones to decorate their lips and face. Lipstick use is also well-recorded in ancient Greece, Egypt, and China.

French Fries Day

About National French Fries Day

When is National French Fries Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 13

National French Fries Day is today. One wonders why we call this a “National” day, as French fries are popular around the world. This July 13 holiday should be called an “International” day.

Its name might suggest a French origin. But, historians believe they originated in Belgium in the 17th century.  When this was scarce in winter months, Belgians substituted fried potatoes in their diet. From Europe, their popularity spread literally around the world.

President Thomas Jefferson introduced French Fries to the U.S.  In the U.S., they are the most popular fast-food item. Some of us get a burger, while others get a hot dog. Some people choose a chicken sandwich, while others opt for a steak bomber. But, almost all of us get these dishes served with a side order of French fries.

While they are called Fries, they can also be baked. And nowadays you can make them in an air fryer. Both of these methods cook the fries without oil so they are healthier for you until you add salt or other toppings. Any way you cook them, they are still high in starch and carbohydrates.

Did You Know? The U.S. Congress attempted unsuccessfully to rename them “Freedom Fries”.

Despite the word “Fries” in their name, they can be fried, or baked. Depending on where you are, you will likely eat them with ketchup, salt, vinegar, mayonnaise, gravy, cheese, bacon, butter, or sugar.

History and Origin of National French Fries Day

Our research has not revealed who declared this a special holiday, or when it was first celebrated. It appears to have been first celebrated in the early 2000s.

Neither the U.S. Congress nor the President of the United States has proclaimed today National French Fries Day.

Considering the worldwide popularity of French fries, we believe it is more appropriate to call this an “International” day.
