About National Freedom Day

When is National Freedom Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 1

National Freedom Day is February 1. It celebrates the freedom and liberties endowed upon us by the Constitution of the United States. America stands as a symbol of freedom around the world. No object symbolizes our freedom more than the Liberty Bell.

National Freedom Day, established in 1948, reminds us that America stands for, and is a symbol of freedom for all people. The roots of this special day come directly from the end of slavery and the signing of the 13th amendment outlawing slavery.

Celebrate this day by reflecting upon your freedoms that you enjoy by being fortunate enough to be in America. Millions of people in the world are not free.

Most Famous Freedom Quote: “Give me liberty or give me death” – – Patrick Henry

How to Celebrate National Freedom Day

  • Spend a few minutes reflecting upon the freedom and liberties we enjoy in the United States.
  • Support and promote freedom and liberty around the world.
  • Hold a Freedom Day party.

Today's Quote

“Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” – – Pope John Paul II

History and Origin of National Freedom Day

Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created National Freedom Day. He believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. So, on February 1st we annually celebrate National Freedom Day.

On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day. This holiday is celebrated annually.

Ferris Wheel Day

When is Ferris Wheel Day? February 14 holidays

When is Ferris Wheel Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 14

Today is Ferris Wheel Day, a February 14 holiday.  What’s the first thing you see as you near an amusement park or a carnival? Why, it’s a tall Ferris wheel, of course. Can you imagine a carnival or festival without one? Neither can I. We have George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. a civil engineer, to thank. In 1893, he made the first Ferris Wheel for the World’s Colombian Exhibition in Chicago. This iconic amusement park ride is one of the most popular rides of all.

The purpose of this day is obvious… to celebrate the birthday of this great inventor and to enjoy his invention. The trouble is, there aren’t many carnivals, amusement parks, or fairgrounds operating in mid-February in North America. You may have to settle with enjoying old photos of trips to a fair or amusement park. If you are in the southern hemisphere where it is currently mid-summer, you’re in luck as amusement parks are open. And, there are plenty of fairs and carnivals going on. Find one of these venues with a Ferris wheel and go for a ride.

How to Celebrate Ferris Wheel Day

  • Look for a fair or a carnival in your area that features a Ferris wheel and go for a ride.
  • Make plans to go to a future carnival or fair.
  • Watch the movie The Greatest Show on Earth.

About Feed the Birds Day

When is Feed the Birds Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 3

Today is Feed the Birds Day, a February 3 holiday. Help the wild birds in your backyard to survive the long, cold winter by feeding them. That’s exactly why this special day was created. Mid and late winter is especially hard on all outdoor animals. By mid-winter, food sources become scarcer and scarcer for the wild birds that over-winter in your backyard. What little available food can get buried under deep snow. The bird feeder that you place in your backyard, in view of your picture window, is entertaining to you as a bird watcher. It is also vital to the survival of birds in harsh winters.

Take today as an opportunity to begin a new and fun hobby… bird watching. Place a feeder in a location where it can be seen from indoors. Make sure to keep it full of seeds all of the time. Once birds are attracted to your feeder, you have effectively adopted them. They become dependent upon the seeds in your feeder.

Winter Bird Feeding Tip: Seeds are the best source of high-energy food for wild birds. Other foods, like bread, do not contain as much energy.

Schools and businesses often participate in this special day. They hold classes and seminars on wild bird feeding, and winter survival, and educate the public about backyard birds in general.

Get in on the fun today. Set up a bird feeder and save your wild backyard birds.

For more information, see: Feed the Birds Day

How to Celebrate Feed the Birds Day

There are many ways to celebrate and participate in this holiday. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Find out what type of seeds your winter backyard birds eat. See Bird Seed Reference Chart
  • Buy a bag of seeds specific to the backyard birds currently in your yard.
  • Fill a bird feeder. Better yet, fill several bird feeders.
  • Have your camera handy and take plenty of pictures of thankful birds.
  • Buy a bird identification book. You’re going to need it.
  • Identify the backyard birds that visit the feeder. Chances are, you will see a few varieties you didn’t know winter in your yard.

About International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day

When is International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 23

International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day is a day for the dogs. Dogs all over the world bark about this February 23 holiday. And, that’s because there is no one else who can appreciate the true value of a dog biscuit. They say “Every dog has his day”. And, it will be his day, when you give him some tasty dog biscuits.

You might appreciate their value in pleasing your dog, as a reward for behavior or enticing them to do a trick. But, the dog is the recipient of the treat. He’s the one who truly appreciates it. No dog can ever get enough of them.

How to Celebrate International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day

  • Give your dog a yummy, chewy treat.
  • Buy a box and give it to a friend who has a dog.
  • Donate a box of dog biscuits to an animal shelter. Dogs at shelters get fed, but they don’t get a lot of extra treats.
  • Do tricks with your dog. Yes, you know how to reward them.

Why this is an “International” day, we may never know. We can only speculate that this day was created by a dog lover who recognized that dogs are beloved pets all over the world.

About Get a Different Name Day

When is Get a Different Name Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 13

What’s in a name? Apparently, a whole lot, when we’re talking about yours. Get a Different Name Day, a February 13 holiday, is for those who are not fond of the formal name given to them. At birth, we are given a first, middle, and name. It wasn’t our choice. Neither was our original nickname. Rather, our parents bestowed it upon us so they could call us to dinner and scold us with our complete formal name, as needed. If you like your name, good for you. If not, then today is for you. Take advantage of today to change it.

Today is the perfect time to pick a name and/or nickname. A lot of people who don’t like their first name choose their middle name at some point. Or, we choose an entirely different name. As for nicknames, at some point, everyone needs to be happy with them or change them.

Nicknames are important, too. We often grow out of our childhood nicknames. They often offer us plenty of choices. For example, Robert can be called Bob, Rob, Bobby, or Robby. Then, there are the nicknames friends, family and co-workers bestow upon us. They can include names like Slim Jm, Speedy, Pumpkin, Butch, Junior, Fat Albert, Bones, Four-Fingered Louie, and Shorty. The list goes on and on and on. They may be nice and complimentary, or not so nice. Once you have been tagged with a nickname, you’re likely stuck with it.

.Ps If you change your name, don’t forget to update your stationery. And, you will need to notify family and friends about the change.

How to Celebrate Get a Different Name Day

  • For your formal name, decide if you like it. Then, change it if you wish. Your parent might not approve, but they love you and will accept it.
  • Do the same with your nickname. Change it if desired. Create a new and more fitting nickname.
  • Give a friend a new nickname. We recommend it is a complimentary one.

About The Day the Music Died

When is The Day the Music Died? This observance is always on February 2

The Day the Music Died Day commemorates the untimely death of singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. These three Rock singers died in an airplane crash on February 3, 1959. at the height of their popularity. On the February 3 Observance of the death of 3 great musicians, we pause to think about them and their music. And, we listen to some of their 1950s top hits.

Every generation has their music idols. These three were among the top of the 1950’s generation. Those who grew up in the fifties mourned the premature deaths of their music idols. Memorials and remembrances occurred for years. Today, many websites are memorializing their deaths, and detailing the events before and after the tragedy.

This day is an observance, rather than a holiday. The term “holiday” implies a celebration. The death of these three musicians was nothing short of tragic. So, let’s mark this day in recognition of the silencing of the voices of these great singers in their prime.

Donny McLean's "American Pie"

In 1971, singer-songwriter Donny McLean released his hit song “American Pie”. In the song, the phrase “the day the music dies” is frequently repeated. It refers to the untimely and tragic deaths of Buddy Holly Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper.

The song American Pie was a huge success and is often played on Rock and Roll radio stations to this day.

Ways to Participate in The Day the Music Died

  • Listen to the music of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. It is readily available online.
  • Learn more about their lives.

About Clean Out Your Computer Day

When is Clean Out Your Computer Day? This holiday is observed on the second Monday in February

Clean Out Your Computer Day is a day to logically review and delete old files and programs. Then, delete them from your computer system. It’s also a good idea to use this day to run a virus program. Your efforts will allow your computer to run faster and leave memory space for more programs and files.  While anyone can enjoy this day, computer geeks consider this a special holiday.

Most of us add programs and files to our computers with reckless abandon. After all, computers have a huge storage capacity.  Many of these files and programs are forgotten over time or are no longer useful to you. Over time they clog memory, confuse retrieval, and use of other files. And, some may slow down your computer.

Somewhere along the way, a (most likely) computer geek or service person, created this day as an opportunity for us to remember to clean up and delete old and unused files.

So, get into the spirit of the day, and clean out the old computer.

How to Participate in Clean Out Your Computer Day

  • Start by running a virus checker.
  • Next, delete all apps you no longer want.
  • Then, by deleting all old files that are no longer of use to you.
  • Is cleaning out your computer beyond your area of expertise? Me, too. These tasks are best performed by the geeks of the world. Contact the experts in your area.
  • After you clean out the inside of your computer, give the outside a good cleaning. When was the last time you even dusted your computer? I thought so. And, your keyboard is looking very yucky, isn’t it?

About Cherry Pie Day

When is Cherry Pie Day? This holiday is always observed on February 20

It’s Cherry Pie Day, a February 20 holiday Cherry pie is America’s second most popular pie, behind only apple pie in popularity. However, in February, it’s Number 1. Like other food holidays, you participate in this day by eating a slice or two.

As a young boy, future president George Washington made the Cherry tree famous, with his now familiar quote “I cannot tell a lie, I chopped down the Cherry tree.” We celebrate George Washington’s Birthday and President’s Day in February. Appropriately, it’s traditional to bake cherry pies to honor of the occasion.

Being the “hot pie” of the month, it is only fitting that Cherry Pie Day falls in February.

How to Celebrate Cherry Pie Day

  • Bake a cherry pie.
  • If you do not have time to bake one yourself, buy one from the store.
  • Eat a slice or two over the course of the day.
  • Bake a pie for someone who is ill or depressed.
  • Bring a cherry pie to your workplace and share it with your co-workers.
