National Orchid Day

When is National Orchid Day, Orchid Plants

When is National Orchid Day? This holiday is always observed on April 16

Today is a really special day. It is National Orchid Day. This April 16 holiday was created by a young couple who loved orchids. They loved them so much that they were going to name their daughter “Orchid”. Unfortunately, the baby died during childbirth. The couple created this day in memory of her and as a remembrance of all young babies and young children who have died. Their second goal for this day is to promote the orchids they so dearly love.

Orchids are one of the most popular flowers of all. These beautiful flowers are native to almost all parts of the world except Antarctica. Scientists speculate that because this flower is native to most parts of the world, the flowers have been around since before the continents separated from each other. If true, they’ve been around for millions of years.  Humans have cultivated them for thousands of years, even before Confucius was born (552 B.C.).

Orchids are one of the most popular houseplants. Its natural growth environment is similar to your indoor climate. It thrives on bright, yet indirect sunlight and warm temperatures. They look great as bouquets for vases. The flower and leaves have many medicinal uses. And, the flowers are edible, too. So, bring your appetite. Depending upon who is counting, there are somewhere between 22,000 and 30,000 species. So, that means somewhere out there is the perfect variety and color for you! Visit your garden store today and purchase a plant.

History and Origin of National OrchidDay

In 2010, Mike and Faith Young volunteered at orchid reserve in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. They fell in love with orchids. And, they decided that if they were ever blessed with a daughter, they would name her Orchid. Faith Young became pregnant with a girl. But sadly, the girl died during childbirth. To honor her memory, the couple went on to create National Orchid Day in 2015.

This holiday event is referred to as a “National” day. However, we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day. So, this holiday is dedicated to the memory of all children who died and to celebrate this beautiful flower.

About National Coffee Cake Day

When is National Coffee Cake Day? This holiday is always celebrated on April 7

Any time is a great time to bake one of your favorite recipes. Grab your apron and spatula. National Coffee Cake Day has arrived, and it’s destined to be a delicious food holiday. I can almost smell the cinnamon wafting from the kitchen. This April 7 holiday is a great opportunity for you to do a little baking. Then, take a break from your busy day. Sit down with one or two friends with a pot of coffee, and this delicious cake.

Coffee cakes are very popular around the world. You can enjoy it for breakfast, or any time of the day. It goes great with coffee. But, not all of us like coffee. It pairs well with tea or a glass of milk, too.

The History and Evolution of Coffee Cake

Cakes were first created by ancient Egyptians. It evolved from sweet bread recipes. From there different kinds of cake and recipes spread to Europe and eventually around the world.

Coffee was introduced to Europeans in the 16th century. There is disagreement as to exactly which century coffee cakes were first made. They were first made in Europe in the 16th or 17th century by confectioners and bakers as the perfect complement to a cup of coffee. It originated in Dresden, Germany. Early coffee cakes were also made near this same time in Denmark. There are varying recipes.

The European coffee cake is a coffee-flavored sponge cake. It consists of two circular layers of cake. After baking it in a bundt pan, the cake is cut in half horizontally to form two circles. The bottom layer is placed on a serving plate. A thick layer of coffee-flavored butter icing is spread on the first layer. Then, you add the second layer of sponge cake on top. Finally, you drizzle streusel on top of the cake. In the United States, a coffee cake is simpler. It has no coffee flavoring in it. It is a heavier, sweet cake topped with a crumbly mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and butter or margarine. In the U.S., it is baked in either a bundt pan or a square 9″ X 9″ pan, depending on how you want to cut and present it.

In both Europe and the United States, some recipes have slightly different base ingredients. And, often fruit or nuts are added.

How to Celebrate National Coffee Cake Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate this food holiday:

  • Bake a homemade coffee cake.
  • Alter the ingredients a bit. Try adding some fruit or nuts.
  • Sit down to a slice of coffee cake with a cup of Joe.
  • If you don’t like coffee, have it with a cup of tea or a glass of milk.
  • Bring it to work to share with your coworkers.
  • Bring one to a friend. They will probably invite you in to share it with you over a cup of coffee.

History and Origin of National Coffee Cake Day

Our research did not uncover who created National Coffee Cake Day. Nor did we discover any information as to why it was created. We can only speculate that a coffee drinker who really likes this sweet cake created the holiday to celebrate coffee cake. As this cake originated in Europe, we wondered if this holiday also came from Europe. We found no information at all to support this theory.

The earliest reference we discovered about this holiday was in 2011.

We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

National Picnic Day

Picnic Table Day

About National Picnic Day

When is National Picnic Day? This holiday is always observed on April 23

It is springtime, and every day the weather is getting a little nicer. Is it nice enough in your area to get outside and enjoy it? We sure hope so, as today is National Picnic Day. Grab the paper plates and plastic cutlery. On this lovely April 23 Spring day, we are encouraged to have a fun picnic lunch or dinner. For most of us, it is the first time in several months we can enjoy eating outdoors. I don’t know about you, but the picnic table is calling me. And, today is going to be the first of many days of eating outside.

Picnics can take a wide variety of forms. Spread your food and drinks out onto a picnic table. Or, you can fill a picnic basket with goodies and eat it on a blanket. Add a bottle of wine for a romantic picnic. Have your picnic in your backyard, at a park, or on the beach. Your choice of foods is unlimited, from sandwiches and cold fried chicken, to hot dogs and hamburgers. And, don’t forget the baked beans and watermelon. Drink choices are broad, too. Beer, lemonade, Kool-Aid, and wine are popular choices.

Did of Know?  The word “picnic” comes from the French word “Piquenique”. It was coined in 1692 and refers to social events.

Tea Party on Tea for Two Tuesday

The Evolution of Picnics

The French are credited with holding the first picnic. In 1789 during the French Revolution, Royal Parks were opened to the general public for the first time.  People flocked to the royal parks carrying blankets and baskets of food and wine. Picnics came into being and were quite popular. Their popularity spread to England and other countries in Europe. This form of casual outdoor dining eventually spread across the Atlantic to America. Today, people all over the world celebrate events and reunions with picnics, complete with food, drink, and games.  And, if the weather is inclement, open up the garage door and hold it in the garage protected from the weather.

It doesn’t take much incentive to hold a picnic. They are popular for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. In the summer, picnics are a great way to create new memories at family reunions, graduations, neighborhood get-togethers or street parties, anniversaries, birthday parties and so many more events.

For the Record:

In 2000, France set a new picnic record. It was held along 600 miles of coastline.

In 2009, Portugal set a record of 20,000 people at a picnic.

How to Celebrate National Picnic Day

There are so many ways to celebrate and participate in National Picnic Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Plan an easy meal and eat at the picnic table.
  • Head out to your local park with a blanket and basket filled with goodies.
  • Have a family picnic.
  • Have a block or street party.
  • Hold outdoor games during the picnic.
  • If the weather is still a little cook in your area, hold a picnic around a campfire.

Did You Know? When an ant finds goodies on your picnic table, it leaves a scent as it travels along the way back to its nest. This allows other ants to follow the trail back to your picnic table.

Today's Quotes

“If you go for a stroll, have a picnic or lunch with a glass of wine – it doesn’t get better than that.” – – Meghan Markle

“We hope that, when the insects take over the world, they will remember with gratitude how we took them along on all our picnics.” – – Bill Vaughan

“Death is the sound of distant thunder at a picnic.” – – W.H. Auden

History and Origin of National Picnic Day

Our extensive research has not yet identified the creator of this holiday or why it was created. As a matter of fact, there is very little written about this holiday. We did find a reference to an annual picnic celebration held at UC Davis. Held annually since 1909, this event attracts tens of thousands of participants. But, it is held in May and the organizer’s website offers no connection to National Picnic Day.

It appears that this date was selected as it is springtime in many parts of the country, so we turn our thoughts to outdoor activities like picnics. But, in some areas, it still remains a little too cold for outdoor picnics.

Without any information from the creator of this day, we may never know if this is a true national holiday. We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.

Some even stealthily leave zucchini on neighbors’ doorsteps in the middle of the night.

So here you are in April. Zucchini finds its way in small supply to grocery stores in your area. Now, you’ve got the urge for zucchini bread. Hence, the creation of this day in April!

This World Rat Day holiday may seem as bizarre and unique as they come. But, it is no joke. There are plenty of people around the world, called “rat fanciers”. They love and care for rats as a pet.

About World Party Day

When is World Party Day? This holiday is always observed on April 3

I never pass up an opportunity to party. But, if you need an excuse, today offers you all the incentive you need. Today, is World Party Day, an April 3 holiday. Get out the party hats and favors. Decorate with balloons and streamers. And, open up the champagne.

World Party Day was created with the premise that humans have the right to joy and peace through social positivity and fun. A basic concept of this day is that peace is not the opposite of war. Rather, “Party” is the true opposite.

This day is intended to be a synchronized, worldwide day of partying.

How to Celebrate World Party Day

You can celebrate this day partying in any way you’d like, alone, or in groups. We encourage you to make it a day-long party. But, a shorter event is fine, too.

Here are some ideas on how to really party it up on this special day:

  • Have a gala gathering.
  • Hold a fabulous fest.
  • Have an enormously entertaining event.
  • Make it a barnstorming bash.
  • Dance the night away.
  • Sponsor a big banquet.
  • It’s time for a super shindig.

History and Origin of World Party Day

The origin of World Party Day dates back to 1996.

The concept of this day originated in the novel Flight, a Quantum Fiction Novel, written by American writer Vanna Bonta in 1995. At the end of the novel, there is a worldwide allegiance and celebration. The date? Why April 3rd, of course!
