Sewing Machine Day

When is Sewing Machine Day? June 13 holiday or September 10 holiday

About Sewing Machine Day

When is Sewing Machine Day? This holiday is always celebrated on both June 13 and September 10

Sewing Machine Day celebrates a very important invention —– the sewing machine. But, we’ve found two dates to celebrate sewing machines. You can celebrate it as a June 13 holiday. Or, celebrate it as a September 10 holiday. So, why not celebrate it on both dates!? The first sewing machines were made in France in the 1830s. It wasn’t until 1846, that they were patented in the U.S. What a great invention. Before its creation, clothes items were sewn together by hand…stitch by stitch. On this holiday we celebrate a great invention that allowed people to make better quality clothes faster and more efficiently.

People who know how to use these machines are dwindling in number. Our mothers and grandmothers had a sewing machine in the house. They used it all of the time. But, look around your house. Do you have one? Does anyone in your house even know how to sew by hand? Chances are, the answer is no.

If you have a sewing machine, enjoy today making things with it. If not, consider picking up this great hobby.

Today’s Saying: “A stitch in time saves nine.”  Interpretation: Saves nine what, you ask. Well, stitches of course. One stitch made right away, prevents further breakage and will not require nine more stitches later.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Sewing Machine Day

There are a lot of ways to celebrate this holiday.

  • If you have a sewing machine, use it to make something today.
  • If you so don’t have one, buy one.
  • Teach someone in the next generation how to use the machine. You never know, it may become a fun new hobby for them.
  • Celebrate this as both a June 13 holiday and a September 10 holiday.

History and Origin of Sewing Machine Day

There remains some mystery around the date for this holiday. Almost all documentation on the internet points to June 13  as the date for Sewing Machine Day. But, we found no information why this date was selected. We did find an occasional reference to September 10th as the day for this holiday. And, this is the date that the sewing machine was patented. We also found a single reference to “New Sewing Machine Day” on March 1st.

If you sew, you have two days to celebrate Sewing Machine Day…..lucky you!

Our first research into this holiday was in the early 2000s. It was called simply Sewing Machine Day. In our second research study in the early 2020s, we found some internet were now calling this holiday National Sewing Machine Day. However, there is no presidential proclamation, or act of Congress, making this a true “National” day.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is important to distinguish true National days.
