Today’s holiday recognizes the importance of all the geeks and nerds in our lives. It is National Techies Day. The objective of this October 3 holiday is to address the long-term demand for tech workers. Businesses and technical organizations use this day to encourage students to consider a career in Technology. National Techies Day is an opportunity to give your friendly technician(s) some well-deserved appreciation, too.

Most technicians are normal, everyday people. But, sometimes the office technician may be a geek or a nerd. But, when your PC goes down or gets a virus, that geek is invaluable. He’s on top of his trade and can get your system back up and running faster than you can say “gigabyte”.   

Not to be left out….. This day is for all technicians, not just computer techies. There are many highly skilled technical jobs out there that demand high-quality people to assess equipment of all kinds. Let’s give a big hand and thanks to all techies, from all fields, on this special day.

Tv Talk Show Host Day, an October 23 holiday, celebrates and honors all Tv Talk Show hosts. But most of all, this very special day honors Johnny Carson. It is celebrated on the birth date of this legendary nighttime talk show host. Johnny Carson’s Birthday was October 23, 1925.

Carson is considered the “King of late-night Television”. Johnny amused us with his hilarious antics. He dazzled us with an array of actors, actresses, and famous people. And, they all clamored to be one of the guests on his show.  It made unknown people famous, and famous people even more famous. Johnny’s sidekick Ed McMahon was brilliant in this supporting role, opening each show proclaiming “Hereeee’s Johnny!” Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992. His reign on this #1 show lasted a record 29 years, 7 months, and 21 days. There were 1,859 episodes.

Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day is a great opportunity to show off your beloved Teddy Bear to work associates. Take your beloved Teddy Bear with you to work.

Almost all children have a teddy bear or two. As we become adults, they get left behind at home. However, chances are you still have your Teddy Bear somewhere in your house or your old childhood bedroom. Most ladies admit to still having their Teddy Bear and will bring them to work on this day.  Guys, on the other hand, are less willing to admit that they still have one. However, if all guys keep to the spirit of this day, you would see a tremendous number of bears in the workplace today.

Here’s wishing you and your Teddy Bear a very Happy Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day.

Today is National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. As a parent with three kids, I think this could become one of my favorite holidays!

Got kids!? Then, you get to let them “take you to lunch” today. And, you’re gonna love it. Go to your child’s school and join them for lunch in the school cafeteria. Sounds yummy, doesn’t it!? But, actually, that’s the point. You get to see the hopefully healthy lunch they are getting at school, check out the environment in the cafeteria, and perhaps engage with the cafeteria staff about the quality of the foods your child eats each day. You will have to check with the school administrators, to see if they participate in this increasingly popular program. We also suggest you discuss this with your kids first. This day may only work with lower grade levels. Even then, some kids may be embarrassed to have mom and dad show up in the lunch room.

We are gonna partially hijack this special day with the following suggestion for grown-up children:  Take mom and dad to lunch at their favorite restaurant, or a special restaurant you went to together as a family. As to who pays, we will leave that up to you and your parents!

Are you a highly intelligent human being? You know you’re head and above, “smarter than the average bear”. And, you’ve got a high IQ to prove it. Yet despite all your smarts, you just can’t figure out why everyone thinks you’re so “un-cool”. Why can’t you be smart and cool at the same time? Well, you can. And, today is your day to be cool, if only for a day. Today is Smart is Cool Day, an October 22 holiday. Now you can celebrate the smarts God gave you, and appreciate all of the benefits of being highly intelligent. Certainly, being smart is a really cool thing, even if no one else knows it or appreciates it.

I don’t know why, but to many people, being highly intelligent is not considered cool. Nowhere is this more evident than in High School. Brainiacs certainly take more than their share of teasing and grief. They are stereotyped, often viewed as nerds, geeks, stuffy, having their noses up in the air, and occasionally being a snob. People think of smart people as the “Absent Minded Professor” or “Nutty Professor” type. Highly intelligent people are often observed with their minds in a cloud, completely absorbed in their thinking, and unaware of others and things going on around them. 

Spend today enjoying how intelligent AND how cool you are. Sounds like a fun day to me!

Punk for a Day Day is today, an October 25 holiday. Are you a punk? Would you like to be one? Me neither. One might desire to be a Punk Rocker, but not literally a punk. So what then is the reason for this day!? It is to promote and celebrate the culture, especially punk rock music. 

This music genre arrived in the mid to late 1970s. It began as a form of garage band music and rejected common 1970s rock music. A whole punk culture emerged, including a style of clothes and most notably pink hair. While not very popular today, the music still exists.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, an October 21 holiday, celebrates a delicious Fall dessert. In October, pumpkins are literally glowing. So, why not put two of your favorites together …..pumpkins and cheesecake!? They make a great dessert. They are both nutritious and healthy.

Many of the October holidays center around Halloween, pumpkin, and apple themes. However, there’s ample room on the October calendar for plenty of holidays and observances celebrating or commemorating other subjects and topics. Increase Your Psychic Powers Day, is a perfect example. This October 31 holiday is one of those special days that you might predict should be celebrated this month.

Are you clairvoyant? Do you have the potential to become a fortune teller or mystic soothsayer? If so, you have some form of Extra Sensory Perception (ESP). Two things are important to developing and honing your psychic powers. First, you need to believe in ESP and other psychic powers. Second, you have to practice, practice, practice. This strengthens these capabilities.  After all, as they say “practice makes perfect”. Armed with a heightened level of mystic and metaphysical powers, you can become a fortune teller and even raise the dead when you hold a seance. 

Let’s test your psychic skills. For example, I’m thinking of a number from one to ten. Okay, take a guess…….what number is it?? You only have a one in ten chance of getting this right. Grab your stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, and tongue depressors.  National Physician’s Assistant Day is today. This October 6 holiday celebrates and recognizes the importance and skills of this career. The highly trained Physician’s Assistant, abbreviated as “PA”, is an invaluable aide to physicians and general practitioners. They can perform many of the tasks of general practitioners.

The profession of Physician’s Assistant was created in 1965 by Dr. Eugene Stead at Duke Medical Center. The first PAs graduated from Duke University on October 6, 1967. Since then, this job has grown to tens of thousands of people. Their numbers continue to grow.

Did You Know? The first Physician’s Assistants graduated from Duke University in 1967. So, this is a somewhat new career field. For example, farmers, soldiers, and doctors have been around for thousands of years.   

Old Farmers Day, an October 12 holiday, honors the hard labor of farmers throughout American history. Early American culture was heavily a farming culture. Early settlers cleared fields and pristine woods, to farm the rich land. They brought seeds and farming methods with them. They also found new seeds and learned new methods along the way. Many of those new farming methods came from Native Americans, who were already farming the land. Most notably, was the NaAtive American technique of hilling, or mounding soil.

The month of October is a very appropriate month to celebrate and honor farmers. At this time, the harvest is largely complete. It means that farmers can take a break from their labors, to enjoy this celebration.

A farmer’s work is long and hard. It certainly doesn’t make a person rich. It has its good years and its bad ones. There is no guarantee of a good crop. Weather, pests, and disease problems often prove disastrous. But, through it all, farmers have persevered. And, their ceaseless hard work sets an example for all.

As Americans, we tip our hat to all farmers, young and old, for their contributions to American culture, values, society, and the economy. Happy Old Farmers Day!
