About Herbs and Spices Day

When is Herbs and Spices Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 10

Today is a spicy holiday if there ever was one. It’s Herbs and Spices Day, a June 10 holiday. Countless varieties of seasonings are used for culinary purposes. Without them, our food would be very bland and tasteless.  In addition to culinary applications, they have a wide variety of medical uses, too.

Do you enjoy eating? We all do. The basic ingredients in many recipes can be pretty bland. It’s the herbs and spices in those recipes, that enhances and brings out the flavor. Herbs and spices are so important to the enjoyment of food, that it is only fitting that one day of the year is designated as Herb and Spices Day.

From salt and pepper, to basil, oregano, and cinnamon, we use herbs and spices to create culinary wonders. On a low salt diet!? No problem. There are dozens upon dozens of herbs and spices that you can substitute, to thoroughly enjoy your meal without a lot of salt.

Medicinal Value of Herbs and Spices

Since ancient times, herbs and spices have been used for a wide variety of medicinal purposes. They have been used to treat countless ailments, from bad breath and skin ailments, to treatments for cancer, stomach disorders, and diabetes. Many of these uses are effective, and others not so successful. We do know that garlic, will certainly keep vampires away!

Did You Know? Ounce for ounce, herbs and spices have more antioxidants than any other food group.

History and Origin of Herbs and Spices Day

This special day has only been around since about 2015. There is little written about it, and the creator of this special day is unknown.

While this day is relatively unknown, we feel the importance of herbs and spices in the kitchen, as well as for medicinal purposes, warrants this special day.

When is Go Fishing Day

About Go Fishing Day

When is Go Fishing Day? This holiday is always observed on June 18

We heard the fish are biting. Grab your tackle and gear. Today is Go Fishing Day. Now, this June 18 holiday is my kind of day! It’s a day to go out and bring home a healthy, tasty, meal for the family. It’s hard work sitting in a boat all day under a hot sun just waiting to get a nibble so you can set the hook. But, we’re doing it to feed the family. So, no sacrifice is too great.

Who said fishing is a fun and relaxing sport? Fishing is hard work. The pressure to bring home a “mess of fish” to feed the family is almost unbearable. After all, as the “Hunter-gatherer” of the family, you need to bring home the meal or the family might starve.  My wife doesn’t appreciate the difficult task of fishing for long hours under all sorts of weather conditions. The wife thinks we’re just out having fun. Yeah, right, pass me another beer.

How to Celebrate Go Fishing Day

Celebrate today, on the shore or in a boat, with a fishing pole in one hand, and your favorite beverage in the other. And, don’t go home until you have caught your limit of fish!

  • Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.
  • Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and he’s “Gone Fishing” for a lifetime.

Then, we came up to his door to ask about his creation of this day and saw a sign on the door. It reads “Sorry, I’m not home. I’ve gone Fishing!”

Reader Comments:

One reader informed us that: “The first American fly-casting tournament was held in Utica, NY. on this day in 1861” Perhaps this was the beginning of Go Fishing Day!?

Around 2020, some websites began to call it National Go Fishing Day or National Fishing Day. We do not know why some sites changed the title. We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. There is no presidential proclamation or congressional resolution making this a true national day.

Flip a Coin Day

Unlucky and Lucky Penny. When is Unlucky Day? December 31 holidays. Opposite Day

When is Flip a Coin Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 1

Need to make a decision, but you don’t know how to decide? Flip a Coin and the answer becomes clear. Today is Flip a Coin Day. Don’t be flippant about this June 1 holiday. It’s the real deal. It’s a day when making decisions is as easy as flipping a coin. We can make both big and small decisions this way. Go ahead, give it a try. The coin toss will always give you the right answer.

This tradition dates back to Julius Caesar. Caesar would take a coin and flip it to make decisions where the right choice was unclear. The correct answer was “heads”, which of course carried his image on the coin.

You can flip a coin to decide on practically any “either-or” question in your life. Mathematically, when you flip a coin, 50% of the time it will land on “heads”. And, 50% of the time, it will come out “tails”.  It’s simple statistics. If you don’t like the decision, will you try for the best two out of three?

Do you have any idea how to celebrate this day? You guessed it…Flip a coin.  Use this method of decision-making for all decisions, and for everything you do today.

How to Celebrate Flip a Coin Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  •  Use a lucky penny or another lucky coin for a coin toss.
  • Do a study. Flip the coin at least ten times. See if it lands on heads 50% of the time.
  • Help out a friend. If you have a friend who is having trouble making a decision, give him a coin to flip.

Today's Quote

“Peace and justice are two sides of the same coin.” – – Dwight D. Eisenhower

History and Origin of Flip a Coin Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Legend has it that the creator of this day flipped a coin to determine whether he (or she) was going to document this holiday. The coin came up “tails”.

When is National Doughnut Day? Donut Day. Salvation Army Lassies

About National Doughnut Day

When is National Doughnut Day? This holiday is celebrated the first Friday in June

National Doughnut Day honors the Salvation Army “Lassies” of WWI. It is also used as a fundraiser for needy causes of the Salvation Army.

The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army “lassies” were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home-cooked foods and provided a morale boost to the troops. Soldiers cooked doughnuts in oil inside the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. The Salvation Army’s “first doughnut girl” was Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance.

On National Doughnut Day, look to see if your local doughnut shop, or other organizations, are offering free donuts to solicit donations for the Salvation Army or another needy cause. If you find them, please be generous.

Did You Know? The official dictionary spelling of the term is “Doughnut” and is most often seen in print. The words “Doughnut” and “Donuts” are synonyms. Both spellings have been around for a long time. While “Doughnut” arrived first, “donut” has been around since the 1800s. If you see the term National Donut Day, it’s the same day.

The Origin of the Term Doughboy

The term “Doughboy” was popular in referring to U.S. Army infantrymen during World War I. American foot soldiers were occasionally called doughboys during the Civil War. The earliest references to the term, comes from the U.S-Mexican war.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. However, given the importance of this day, we believe it warrants the “National” title.

Take Your Dog to Work Day

Dogs. When is National Mutts Day, July 31 holidays. National Pet Memorial Day

About Take Your Dog to Work Day

When is Take Your Dog to Work Day? This holiday is celebrated the Friday after Father's Day

Have you been working like a dog at the factory or the office lately? Bring your dog and put him in your place. We know he will work hard and do his best. Today is Take Your Dog to Work Day. There is a risk in doing this. We know he won’t complain, as he always wants to spend more time with you. But, what if he does a better job than you!?

They say every dog has its day. No bones about it, that day has arrived. Today, your dog gets to join you at work today. Of course, this assumes that your (wonderful) boss will allow it.

Once he arrives at work, your dog can tag along, following you on all of your work chores. He’ll be at your side all day long. Your dog will frown at those dog-eared papers on your desk. He’ll end the day happy, but dog-tired.

Now, that we’ve had our chuckle, it’s time to recognize that this is a serious holiday for “Man’s Best Friend”. It is sponsored by Pet Sitters International. The objective is to recognize the importance of dogs in our lives as both companions and protectors. The organization also encourages you to help homeless dogs. One way to do so, is to adopt a dog today!

Sorry, but equal rights laws have yet to arrive in the pet world. We have not found a “Take Your Cat to Work Day”, or a “Take Your Parakeet to Work Day”, or ………….

How to Celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day

Once your dog has arrived at your work…now what? What do you do with him? Will there be organized activities and a luncheon in his honor!?

Here are some ideas:

  • Dress your dog in work clothes so he doesn’t look out of place.
  • Show him off.
  • Put him to work doing your job.
  • Take him on a tour of your work.
  • Show your co-worker all of the tricks he can do.
  • Have a luncheon in his honor.
  • Help homeless animals and support organizations.
  • Adopt a dog.

Today's Quote

“The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.” – –  William Bennis

History and Origin of Take Your Dog to Work Day

This very special day for you and your dog was created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International. We celebrate this day annually.

It was created to recognize dogs as great companions and to encourage the adoption of dogs.

Dare Day a Challenging Day

Earth Animation. How to Create Holidays

About Dare Day

When is Dare Day? This holiday is always celebrated on June 1

Dare Day is a day to challenge someone and to do a dare yourself. This June 1 holiday is a day that daredevils truly relish. Today is definitely a call to action. It is not a day for procrastinators or for hesitation. As you issue dares to people today, you should be fully prepared to receive dares in return.

Dares take all forms and shapes. The type of dare is almost limitless. Whether it is a prank, a challenge to accomplish something, or a personal action (like asking someone out on a date), this is the day to make the dare. And, it’s the day to do the dare. We do recommend that dares be safe, and of course, legal.

Daring to the max: To dare someone to do something risky or challenging is one thing. Declaring the “double dog dare” heightens the challenge. The highest degree of challenge is to “triple dog dare” someone. It should not be used lightly, or frequently.

The most important DARE: We believe the most important dare is the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.

How to Celebrate Dare Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Challenge someone to do something difficult.
  • Accept a challenge from someone.
  • Play the party game Truth or Dare.

There is only one important rule that must be followed: Do not make a dangerous or illegal dare.
