About National Garage Sale Day

When is National Garage Sale Day? This holiday is celebrated on the second Saturday in August

Is your house and garage cluttered with things you no longer need or will likely never use again? Is it a candidate for the television show “Hoarders”? Are you getting a case of claustrophobia, as you sit in your living room? Could you use a little extra cash? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then it’s time to hold a garage sale. You’ll be happy to know that today is National Garage Sale Day. To participate in this special day, you can either hold a garage sale or attend a few of them. And, we’ve got some tips for garage sales to help you have a successful sale.

Whether you are looking to create a little extra room in your living room or closet, or you need to create space for your teenager’s garage band, a garage sale will help you to meet your goals of having a little breathing room and making a few bucks at the same time.

There are 100,000 – 165,000 garage sales every week! Whether you hold a garage sale, a street sale, a moving sale, or an estate sale, you are among those who hold 100,000 – 165,000 garage sales every week! Most sales are two to three days. The most popular day is Saturday. Sundays are the least popular, often with disappointing sales.

Did You Know? The root of garage sales comes from “rummage sales” in the 16th century. Ship captains would hold “rummage sales” to get rid of unclaimed freight.

Today’s Theme: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Tips for a Successful Garage Sale

Here are some tips or holding a garage sale:

  • Advertise when and where the sale is. Advertising is easy on the Internet. Make Advertise on Craigslist, Facebook, and social media.

  • Price items correctly – The key is not to overprice your items. You want to get rid of them. If prices are too high, people will walk away without buying.

  • Be willing to negotiate – Most people who visit your sale, want a “bargain” and will ask if you will take less. Be prepared to negotiate.

  • Have lots of stuff – The more items you have, the more you will sell. And, the more money you will make.

  • Promote a street sale – Tell your neighbors you are having a garage sale and encourage them to do likewise. If they do, advertising a street of multi-family garage sales will bring more people.

  • Shoppers often arrive before the start time. Hold them off until you are ready. Otherwise, you will struggle to complete getting set up.

  • Keep the cash box out of view. Play it safe. Keep some change in your pocket and make the change from there. As you sell things, bring some of the cash inside.

  • Only accept cash. Let me repeat this… only accept cash.

  • Determine what you will do with the leftover items. People wait for the sale to be over and pick up the free items you set by the road. The last thing you want to do is put unsold items back in your house or garage.

  • Hold a half-price sale on the last day. It’s a great way to minimize the number of unsold items after the sale is over.

  • Celebrate – Use some of the sale money to treat your family to dinner at your favorite restaurant. Or, use some of the money for a trip or event.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Garage Sale Day

Here are some ways to enjoy National Garage Sale Day:

  • Clean out your attic, basement, and garage. Then, toss out the junk, and set aside the good stuff for your garage sale.
  • Hold a garage sale to make a little money from the things you no longer need.
  • Take the family to dinner with some of the money you make.
  • Go to garage sales looking for new things to refill your attic and garage.

Today's Quote

“Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” – – Albert Einstein

History and Origin of National Garage Sale Day

This holiday was created in 2001 by C. Daniel Rhodes. After attending several garage sales over several weeks, Rhodes thought it would be more convenient to have one weekend to hold garage sales. While some might offer several arguments why it would not be ideal to restrict garage sales to one weekend, this holiday came into existence to designate one weekend for garage sales.

There is no presidential proclamation or congressional resolution declaring this a true national day.

Listerine Mouthwash, when is National Fresh Breath Day? August 6 holidays

About National Fresh Breath Day

When is National Fresh Breath Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 6

Today is like a day of fresh air, as it is National Fresh Breath Day. No halitosis (bad breath) is acceptable on this August 6 holiday. Rather, the objective of this day is for all of us to have minty fresh breath. It doesn’t take a lot to maintain healthy oral hygiene. And, when you’re on the go or in a rush, a supply of breath mints in your pocket or purse can clear the air around you.

Both Men and Women have worried about bad breath for eons of time. The use of mouth-freshening herbs dates back to around 2,700 B.C. Whether on the dating scene, interviewing for a job, working closely with others, or for countless other reasons, most of us care about how our breath smells……. or doesn’t smell. If you don’t care about your breath, we can assure you that the people around you do. And so, we turn to a variety of methods to freshen our breath and keep it fresh all day and night long.

Did You Know? 50% of the bacteria in your mouth promotes bad breath.

Other Names: This day is sometimes called Halitosis Day. That’s odd, as Halitosis is the technical term for bad breath, which is the opposite of fresh breath.

How to Avoid Bad Breath

Here are some of the keys ways to avoid Halitosis:

  • Have routine dental exams by your dentist.

  • Have dental cleanings by a dental hygienist every six months.

  • Brush your teeth after every meal.

  • Floss your teeth at least once a day.

  • Use mouthwash regularly.

  • Do not chew gums that contain sugar. The sugar can cause bad breath.

  • Use breath mints regularly. Always have them on hand.

Did You Know? You should lightly brush your tongue, too.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Fresh Breath Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in National Fresh Breath Day:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Always have a supply of breath mints on your person.
  • Planning a romantic event? Check your breath just before you go to meet that special someone.
  • Always freshen your breath before business meetings or close contact.

History and Origin of National Fresh Breath Day

Our research did not uncover the creator of this day, or when it was created. Perhaps it was someone in the dental hygiene field. Or, maybe it was someone fresh off of a hot date, that ended too soon due to a bad case of Halitosis. Without finding the creator of this holiday, we are unable to confirm why they created it, or why August 6 was chosen as the day to celebrate National Fresh Breath Day.

Our research studies in the early 2000s and the early 2020s did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

When is National Banana Split Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 25

Today is a day that you can go ape over. It’s a very ape-pealing day. This August 25 holiday is called National Banana Split Day!!

On August 25, 1904, the banana spilt was first created in the small town of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. David Strickler, a 23-year-old pharmacist apprentice was working in the soda fountain section of the Tassel Pharmacy at 805 Ligonier Street. Strickler liked to experiment with different combinations of ice cream flavors and toppings. He created the banana split on this day and sold it for 10 cents, which was a lot at the time. As a matter of fact, it was twice the price of other sundaes.

The banana split quickly caught on with students from local Saint Vincent College, and from there, its popularity spread. Walgreens gets recognition for spreading the banana split across the nation when they added it to their soda fountain menu.

Today, Banana splits are a standard item on the menu of just about anywhere ice cream is sold around the country. It became so popular, that there was a television show for kids called “The Banana Split Adventure Hour”. It aired from 1968 – 1970.

Did You Know? Banana Splits have 850 – 1500 delicious calories, and about 95 great-tasting carbs. I guess we will all get back to our diets tomorrow.

You will absolutely love to know that the best way to celebrate this sweet, carb-filled holiday, is to enjoy a banana split. It’s as simple as that!

Who Invented the Banana Split?

The Banana Split was first invented in Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1904. David “Doc” Strickler worked scooping ice cream at Tassell’s Pharmacy. On August 25, 1904, a customer walked into the store and asked Strickler to make something different and unique. Bananas were recently introduced into the U.S. market. So, Strickler grabbed a banana, cut it lengthwise, and placed it in a bowl. Then, he added ice cream on top of the bananas. Finally, he placed toppings on the ice cream.  And, the banana split was born!

For the Record

According to The Guinness World Book of Records, the world’s largest banana split was made at the Feast of the Senses in Innisfail, Queensland, Australia on March 25, 2017. It was 26,377 feet 11.4 inches long. It included 40,000 bananas, 2,500 liters of ice cream, and 2,000 liters of topping. This banana split broke a 29-year record.

The prior banana split record was set in 1988 in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. This banana split was 4.5 miles long. It contained 33.000 bananas, 150 pounds of chocolate, and 2,500 gallons of ice cream.

The Original Banana Split Recipe

Nowadays, every ice cream shop has its own version of the banana split with somewhat different items. Here’s the official original banana split recipe:

One banana, split in half lengthwise.

  • A scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream.
  • Top the ice cream with marshmallow, pineapple slices, crushed nuts, cherries, and sweet sugar syrup.
  • The original recipe did not include whipped cream or a cherry on top. You can add it, if desired.

Importantly, it should be served in a long, banana-shaped bowl called a “boat”, if possible.

About National Mountain Climbing Day

When is National Mountain Climbing Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 1

Set your sights high on a lofty goal. Everyone should climb a mountain at least once in their lives. It is an exhilarating experience, with a huge reward at the peak… a big sense of accomplishment for reaching new heights. Today is National Mountain Climbing Day. Take the day off on this August 1 holiday and hike up a mountain. The views are simply exhilarating. They’ll take your breath away.

Fresh air and magnificent scenery, only adds to the joy of climbing a mountain to the summit. You might climb just one mountain, and attain pride and bragging rights to family and friends. Or, you might find the experience so rewarding, that mountain climbing becomes a new hobby, as you seek the challenge of conquering one peak after another.

National Mountain Climbing Day was established in honor of this author’s son, Bobby Matthews, and his friend Josh Madigan, for successfully climbing the 46 High Peaks of New York State’s Adirondack Mountains. These two young men, climbed the 46th peak, Whiteface Mountain, on August 1, 2015. They were formally inducted into the Adirondack 46er Club in May 2016.

Can You Climb a Mountain?

Can you climb a mountain? Sure you can! Young children under 10 years old, and senior citizens over eighty climb mountains. Josh Madigan says “It’s more stamina and mental, than strength.” So, there’s no reason you cannot climb a mountain.

Mountain climbing is a challenging hike. On occasion, a difficult climb may require using both your arms and legs on a steep portion of the climb. Rappelling a mountain, like you see when adventurers. Climbing Mount Everest is not part of the climb. Depending upon the size and difficulty, your first climb on an easy mountain will only take a couple of hours.

Mountain Climbing. Repeat day. Daily June Holidays Historic June Events

Bobby and Josh Describe Their Toughest Challenges

  • Hiking down a mountain without a boot. Josh’s boot was of poor quality and literally fell apart.

  • Bobby reflected upon a May 12th hike, when they came upon unexpected knee-deep snow. Without snowshoes, the hike was almost impossible to accomplish. But, they made it.

  • Bobby and Josh both say forecasting the weather before a trip is very important and can be difficult. Most of all, you need to avoid thunderstorms near the peak.

If you can, go climb your first mountain today. Need time to plan? That’s okay. Use today to make a goal and a plan to climb your first mountain. Then, go out and climb it. Ps. Don’t forget your camera.

Words of Wisdom for Mountain Climbing

  • Stay on the Trail.

  • As you get close, even though you may not see it, you will get to the top.

  • Bring plenty of water in your backpack.

  • Bring high-energy bars on long hikes.

  • There is no shame in turning around, especially if the weather gets bad, or you are injured.

  • Wear good quality hiking boots, no sneakers.

  • If you get lost, retrace your steps.

  • Plan your hike. Study trail maps. Most can be found online.

  • Do not littler. That ruins it for those who follow your trail.

How to Celebrate National Mountain Climbing Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in National Mountain Climbing Day:

  • Pick a mountain and set your site on the peak.
  • If this is your first time, select a small one with an easy climbing rating.
  • Learn about Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain.

About National Middle Child Day

When is National Middle Child Day? This holiday is celebrated on the second Saturday in August

Middle Child’s Day, or Middle Children’s Day, gives a little well-deserved recognition to the wonderful and special middle child in the family.

For parents of three children or more, you likely know the “Middle Child Syndrome” all too well. If you grew up as a middle child with both older and younger siblings, you know the feeling a from a very personal perspective.

The first child is the first child. Beyond a doubt, the firstborn is a very special occasion. And he, or she, has all of mom and dad for a while before the second child comes along. The final child is and always will be the baby of the family.

This author knows what it’s like to be a middle child. We won’t go into a dissertation about what Middle Child Syndrome is. Rather, we will focus on one aspect. Older and younger children tend to be more outgoing, or extroverted. The middle child tends to be more introverted, quieter, and perhaps a bit of a loner.

It is very fair and fitting that we celebrate, and place into the limelight, the middle child today. Go out and enjoy this day to the fullest. Tell the world about it. Be a little outspoken, and let the world know how great it is to be the middle child. You truly are a wonderful, talented, and special person!

Happy Middle Child’s Day to all of my fellow middle children!

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Middle Child Day

Here are some ways to enjoy National Middle Child Day:

  • Give your middle child extra attention today.
  • Encourage them to speak more at the dinner table.
  • Let them know they are loved equally.
  • If you have a middle sibling, after teasing them as you usually do, give them some extra love.

History and Origin of National Middle Child Day

This special day was created in 1986 by Elizabeth Walker of Sebring, Fl. As you’ve already guessed Elizabeth is a middle child.

From its creation and up until a few years ago, it was called Middle Child’s Day. Around 2017, a few websites began to add the word “National” to the title. According to Litton Walker, the creator’s grandchild “As for websites adding the word “National” to it, I don’t have a preference, but I suppose it does sound better.”

There is no presidential proclamation or congressional resolution declaring this a true national day.

About National Lighthouse Day

When is National Lighthouse Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 7

All over the world, lighthouses are a guiding light leading boats to safe harbors. National Lighthouse Day is today, an August 7 holiday. This special day honors and commemorates a beacon of light that symbolizes safety and security for boats at sea.

On August 7, 1789, through an Act of Congress, the Federal Government took over responsibility for building and operating our nation’s lighthouses. The government recognized the importance of lighthouses to ships at sea to find safe harbor during fog and storms. Over the years, lighthouses have saved many ships and an untold number of lives.

Lighthouses are a nighttime navigational aid for all types of marine vessels. Throughout maritime history, Lighthouses have shined their powerful, sweeping lights through the fog and storms, allowing ships of all kinds to find their way back to port during inclement weather. With the advent of radar and GPS technology, lighthouses have taken a back seat in guiding ships to port. However, they remain the universal symbol of safe harbor to ships and communities that rely upon the sea for their livelihood.

There are numerous local and national lighthouse preservation societies and lighthouse organizations. They serve to preserve and promote lighthouses, and their historical significance to communities, and to the nation.

National Lighthouse Day Trivia and Fun Facts

Here are some interesting things you may not know about lighthouses:

  • The earliest known lighthouse was constructed in Egypt around 2,600 B.C.
  • There are a variety of light sources. Early lighthouses used open flames. Today’s lighting sources include incandescent bulbs, electric lamps, and LEDs.
  • Built in 1902, the Île Vierge lighthouse in Finistère, France is the tallest in the world. It stands at 271 feet tall (83 meters).
  • The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the United States. It is located on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The lighthouse stands 208 feet tall.
  • There are an estimated 18,700 lighthouses worldwide. 700 of them are in the United States. And, 65 of them are along the coast of Maine.
  • The emergence of GPS technology as made lighthouses obsolete. However, many still operate around the world.
  • While it is not a traditional lighthouse, the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor is also considered a navigational aid.

About Lazy Day

When is Lazy Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 10

Life and work are busy and demanding. Did you ever get the urge to just take the day off, or to kick back and do nothing? Well, that day has arrived as today is Lazy Day. On this August 10 holiday, being lackadaisical is in vogue. We don’t cut the lawn, weed the garden, or even do the dishes. On this holiday people appear so lethargic, that you wonder if they are comatose.

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! Lazy Day is your chance to goof off and do no work. And, it definitely comes at a good time. Hot, muggy weather makes it easy to kick back and be lazy for a day. If summer chores are not done by now, they can just wait one more day. It is best spent on a hammock, along with your favorite summer beverage.

Whoever said, “There’s no lazy days…just lazy people.” Well, we respectfully disagree. Today is proof positive. It is indeed a Lazy Day. And, we consider that a good thing.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Lazy Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in Lazy Day:

  • Sleep in.
  • Grab a book and your favorite summer cooler as you head to the hammock.
  • Go out to eat. Cooking and doing the dishes afterward is work.
  • Go fishing or play golf.
  • Lounge around by the pool or on the beach.
  • It’s perfectly okay to do things today as long as it’s not work.

“Ambition is a poor excuse for not having the sense enough to be lazy.” – – Milan Kundera

History and Origin of Lazy Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. The creators probably had good intentions to document this special day. But, they probably found themselves caught up in the true spirit and meaning of this day.

Some internet websites call this a “National” day. There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a “National” day, which requires an act of Congress. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation about this special day. Rumor has it the President was out playing golf, and the Congress was following the spirit of this holiday.

About Just Because Day

When is Just Because Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 27

Have you held back from doing something you really want to do, something out of character for you? Are you afraid someone will challenge your decision or action? You’re ready to reply to the question with an excuse that’s valid today… Just because. This somewhat inane and quirky August 27 holiday is Just Because Day. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Finally, you have a chance to do something without a rhyme or reason. Most often in life, we do things because we have to, or we want to, or it’s expected of us. None of those reasons apply today.

Is there something you’d like to do, but there isn’t a reason or logic for doing it? Well, today is the day to go out and do something “just because”. It is most enjoyable if it is an uncommon, or unexpected activity or action. Perhaps, you have something in mind. If not, just go with the first thing that comes to your mind.  “Just because” activities often come from a “whim” or a “what if I” type of thought. We know you will quickly get the hang of this day and have a lot of fun with it.

To get you started, here are some of our suggested activities for Just Because Day:

  • Take an unplanned day of vacation.
  • Visit someone you haven’t seen in a while.
  • Knock on someone’s door and compliment them on their great lawn.
  • Skip, don’t walk.
  • Spin a wheel, and bicycle in the opposite direction of where the arrow points.
  • Buy something you don’t need.
  • Jump in a puddle.
  • Walk backward.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Just Because Day

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in Just Because Day:

  • Do something for no other reason than “because I can”.
  • Do something risky or daring. You know the excuse.
  • Looking for an excuse for something you did? You know the reason.
  • Send someone flowers or a gift, just because.

Today's Quote

Did you ever feel like you’ve had too much wine?  …. Yeah, me neither.

History and Origin of Just Because Day

In 1989, Dr. Stephen T. Jones, a professor at California State University San Marcos created Just Because Day. Why did he create this day? While we were unable to contact him, we are certain he did so just because he could.

Nowadays, people have added the word “National” to the title. Perhaps they added it just because they can.  However, we did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. There are no congressional resolutions or presidential proclamations.
