National Toilet Paper Day

Toilet Paper Day

About National Toilet Paper Day

When is National Toilet Paper Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 26

We believe there’s no other holiday quite like this one. Many people don’t like to talk about TP. We just want to appreciate its vital importance, while otherwise taking it for granted. As the Charmin ad says, “Enjoy the Go!” On National Toilet Paper Day, we certainly want you to have a happy experience. Then, perhaps you’ll feel more comfortable sharing the pleasant experience with others. We hope you thoroughly enjoy the go on this August 26 holiday.

Let’s not take toilet paper for granted. It may not always be there when you need it. For many of us, it is needed multiple times a day. Toilet paper is indeed an essential item. It is not available in many parts of the world. If you’ve ever entered a stall without first checking to see if the dispenser is empty, you will agree that it is truly essential. So, as you roll off a hefty wad of toilet paper while you sit on the throne, take a minute to reflect and appreciate that it is there.

We believe there’s no other holiday quite like it.

Toilet Paper Has a Long and Soiled History

Over thousands of years of history, there were many ways to clean up after the “go”. In the early days, people just used their hands for clean up. Over time, the left hand came to be designated for this task. It would then be washed in a nearby creek or simply wiped off. In many cultures, people would not use their left hand for eating or many other tasks. Over time, a wide variety of items came to be used for the clean-up job, including rocks, leaves, corn cobs, and more. Squatting over a creek was common, with waste being washed downstream by the current. Perhaps one of the most bizarre methods of wiping one’s derriere clean came into use around 79 A.D.  A wet sponge on a stick was used. After use, it was rinsed off and left for the next person!

Fortunately for me and you, progress and invention brought about much more sanitary and disposable toilet paper. Toilet paper was invented in China in 580. It came in sheets. It was coarse and expensive. Most of the population couldn’t afford it. It wasn’t until the 1400s that it began to be manufactured in China. Most of the world had to wait until the 1800s, for toilet paper to come into popular use. In 1857, toilet paper sheets were commercially sold for the first time in the U.S. On December 22, 1871, Seth Wheeler from Albany, NY received patent #465,588 for the toilet paper roll. With toilet paper now on a roll, using “the head” and “powdering your nose” became far more convenient and sanitary. We only had to wait another century or so for indoor plumbing, but that’s a subject for another day.

The Great Over/Under Debate

For many decades a debate raged over whether the roll of toilet paper should unfold over the top of the roll, or under it. To this day, many people still (mostly) humorously argue their case for over or under. It’s a proven fact that toilet paper unrolled over the roll is more sanitary. Those in favor of under the roll, argue those who do so are more intelligent. There are many other arguments for each direction.

Seth Wheeler’s 1871 patent for the toilet paper roll clearly shows diagrams of toilet paper coming off the top of the roll. But, wait! There are other pictures of Wheeler’s invention where the toilet paper unrolls under.

So, which way is the winner of this debate? We will let you…. make the call.

Did You Know? When a roll of toilet paper is used up, most people throw the cardboard core away into the trash. But, the cardboard roll is recyclable. Placing it in the paper recycling bin, or composting it saves space in the landfill.

History and Origin of National Toilet Paper Day

While there is a rich history about toilet paper, we have not yet identified the creator of this special day or why he or she created it. Despite our deep search, it’s as if any information on the creator was thoroughly wiped clean off the internet. And other sources.

Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day

Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day, August 8 holidays

About Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day

When is Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day? This holiday is celebrated on August 8

Your wife has ordered you to get rid of the dozens of zucchinis that are covering the kitchen table and all of the counters. The solution arrives to you on Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. This August 8 holiday saves the day. It might be a nasty thing to do to your neighbor. But hey, what are you going to do with an endless supply of zucchini fruit?

Experienced gardeners know that Zucchini is one of the most prolific plants in all of the gardening world. A single plant produces a seemingly endless supply of fruit. A small row of zucchini plants has the potential to end world hunger.

By the time August arrives, gardeners are reaping far more zucchini than they can possibly use. They use it daily in an untold number of recipes, from soups and stews to breads and dips. Still, the fruit matures on the vine faster than anyone can even pick it. Zucchini growers become desperate, as they try to give zucchini away to family, friends, and everyone they encounter. By August, even non-gardeners have had enough. Everyone avoids you, with your arms laden with giveaway fruit.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s time to sneak over, under the cover of darkness, to your neighbor’s porch, and unload some zucchini. Today is that day. This may solve your problem for today. But, what will you do with all those zucchini that you harvest tomorrow!?!

Zucchini Trivia

How much do you really know about one of the most prolific vegetable plant on the planet? Learn more….

  • In the 1920s, Italian immigrants brought zucchini to America. Home vegetable gardens have not been the same since.
  • Zucchini is good for you. It is low-fat, low in calories, and low in carbs. Also, it is high in important healthy minerals and nutrients.
  • Zucchini has more potassium than a banana.
  • Home gardener Henry D’Angela from Ontario, Canada grew the world’s longest zucchini . It was a whopping 8 feet 4.79 inches.
  • Ron Scholtz, from Williamstown, VT. holds the world record for weight. In 2020, he grew a 115-pound giant zucchini.
  • While no one has actually done an official count, there are over one hundred zucchini recipes. While you grow them in your vegetable garden, and you find it in the vegetable areas of grocery stores, it is indeed a fruit.
  • The flower of the plant is edible.
  • A zucchini’s high water content aids in hydration.
  • It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • You can make a zucchini horn and play a song on it.

How to Celebrate Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day

The best time to sneak some zucchini onto your neighbor’s porch is in the early morning when it is still dark outside, and most people are asleep. However, nowadays more and more homeowners have a front door camera like the Ring Camera. Thus, it is getting harder and harder to sneak around with your excess zucchini without getting caught.  So, if you want to remain anonymous, we suggest you wear a mask. Otherwise, just have fun with this day delivering zucchini to all of your neighbors.

Here are some ideas on how to have fun with this day:

  • As the title of this holiday suggests, stealthily deposit some of your fresh garden zucchini on your neighbor’s porch or front step.
  • Get up early so your neighbors don’t see you left it on their porch.
  • Make some zucchini bread and leave it on their porch.
  • Forget the sneakiness. Give some away to all of your neighbors.
  • Keep a couple of zucchinis and use it in a few recipes.
  • When it comes to eating them, bigger is not better. Pick Zucchini when they are small. Small fruit tastes better.
  • They are squash and are related to pumpkins.  Asa matter of fact the two can cross, resulting in interesting crossbreeds.
  • Eat zucchini on a regular basis. Scientists tell us it slows down the process of graying hair.
  • Have you ever heard of someone who is allergic to zucchini? No one in the whole world is allergic to it!
  • It can be used as a natural skin moisturizer.

Serendipity Day

Four Leaf Clover

When is Serendipity Day? This holiday is always observed on August 18

You are so lucky!  You didn’t chance across this holiday as an accidental discovery. It is not a fluke or dumb luck that brought you here. Whether you realize it or not, it is a stroke of serendipity that you arrived at this webpage, as today is Serendipity Day. Think of it as a blessing in disguise, as you can expect unexpected events to occur on this August 18 holiday. And, they will be happy events.

The word “Serendipity ” was coined by Horace Walpole in 1754. He took it from a Persian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serendip”. It was written over 1,000 years ago. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Serendipity is: “the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for”. Serendipity is not fate. It’s similar to luck. Perhaps best of all, serendipity can occur each and every day of your life!

When you think about it, serendipity comes from a positive, uplifting attitude and lifestyle. If you think positive, good things, unexpected things can and will happen. Importantly, if we are thinking positively, we are most likely subconsciously looking for serendipity. With a positive attitude, we will recognize serendipity each time it occurs.

I hope you really benefit from Serendipity Day. As for me, I’m anxiously awaiting winning the lottery today. Now, where did I put that ticket!?

Rather, it is an attitude or lifestyle where you reach for the unexpected and for happy surprises.

About National Senior Citizens Day

When is National Senior Citizens Day? This holiday is always observed on August 21

National Senior Citizens Day honors our elderly population. On this August 21 holiday, we are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribution of elderly people to home, family, and society.

In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”

Sixty is the New Fifty, Seventy is the New Fifty Five

It is also important to note that many senior citizens are not “elderly” or infirm. At least they don’t act that way. One does not automatically become too old to do things when he or she reaches social security age or retirement age. Rather, many millions of seniors shun the sedentary lifestyle, and are more active after they retire, than when they are still of working age. Those that are healthy often do things they never had time for before retirement. These senior citizens travel, go biking, climb mountains, fly along zip lines, and do many other activities. The focus is to do as much as you can for as long as you can.

Did You Know? Some seniors lift weights into their eighties. And, some octogenarians even ride roller coasters.  Why not!?

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Senior Citizens Day

On National Senior Citizens Day, those of us who are not seniors should:

  • Spend some time with them.
  • Show your appreciation for them.
  • Do volunteer work in support of the elderly.

If you are a senior citizen:

  • Go to a senior citizen center and see what they have to offer.
  • Enjoy your day any way you desire. After all, this is your day!
  • Do something that is fun and age-appropriate.
  • Get out of your comfort zone and do something challenging.
  • Get some exercise for your mind and body.
  • Make sure to take advantage of senior citizen specials and discounts. There’s bound to be plenty of offers today.

Sandcastle Day

Sandcastle Day

About Sandcastle Day

When is Sandcastle Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in August

What is it about building a sandcastle that is so enjoyable? Sandcastle Day is a special day for just about everyone. Age doesn’t matter when engaged in this activity. People young and old have been building them for many centuries. And, your skill level is irrelevant, as anyone can build a beautiful and enormous sandcastle. For proof, just watch all the kids on the beach. This August holiday exists to have summer fun as sand, water, and sunlight mix together to create good memories of warm summer days and cool beachside breezes. One might call this a “childhood memory”. However, the pleasant memories extend to teens, adults, moms, and dads, along with grandparents and aunts, and uncles. Certainly, building sandcastles on Sandcastle Day, or any day for that matter, is a priceless memory for everyone involved.

The world record sandcastle was constructed on the beach in the seaside town of Blokhus, Denmark. Using over 4860 tons of sand, Dutch artist Wilfred Stijger with the help of 30 other sand sculptors, built a sandcastle measuring 69 ft 5 inches tall.

Building Sandcastles is an Artful Business

Beachside communities hold Sandcastle building competitions complete with prizes. They are often one of several activities at a beachside festival. These festivals usually include arts and crafts booths, food vendors, along with beachside games and activities. Building sandcastles has evolved into an art form. And, competitions are held all over the world, drawing both unknown and established artists to the beach to create their temporary masterpieces.

Nowadays, sandcastle creations are huge and require a team of artists, along with many tons of sand. The creations can take days to complete. Hopefully, it will not rain during this time.

Sandcastle Trivia

  • Sand is made of silica or silicon dioxide. Most of the earth’s crust is composed of this compound.
  • Sand is used to make glass, ceramics, concrete, countertops, and many other items.
  • It is used to treat snowy and icy roads.
  • Sandy beaches are a variety of colors, including white, tan, pink, and black.
  • Since 1990 more people have died falling into holes in sand at the beach than by sharks. It’s hard to believe. But, it’s true.
  • Sand sticks to your skin because it holds onto water. Your skin sweats, creating the moisture sand needs to cling to you.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Sandcastle Day

There are two places to celebrate this special holiday. You can make sandcastles in the sandbox right in your backyard. However, the amount of sand is limited. So, if you want to really get into the spirit of this special day, pack up a picnic lunch and some ice-cold beverages. Then, take the family to a sandy beach for the day. Pick an open space and get to work building the biggest and best sandcastle on the beach.

If you live in a seaside town, petition your town government to hold a sandcastle-building competition on the beach. It’s fun for the whole town. The competition will also draw in people from outside of the area, bringing much-needed tourist business to your local economy.

On this holiday, you can also:

  • Put a sandbox in your backyard for the kids to play in.
  • Do your part in keeping beaches clean so others can enjoy building castles in the sand.

.PS Don’t forget the suntan lotion.

Today's Quote

“If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there’d be a shortage of sand.” – – Milton Friedman

History and Origin of Sandcastle Day

There is much information available about sandcastles and sandcastle-building competitions. However, our research did not find the creator or the origin of Sandcastle Day. Based upon what we found out, it is very likely this day originated from one of the many Sandcastle Day competitions.

This holiday seems to have originated around 2015 or slightly before. There is not a lot of documentation about this day.
