National Carousel Day or Merry-Go-Round Day

Merry-Go-Round Carousel Day

About National Carousel Day

When is National Carousel Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 25

National Carousel Day, also called Merry-Go-Round Day, is perfectly placed on a warm and sunny mid-summer day. This July 25 holiday occurs during those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer that everyone loves. And, we certainly know that Americans young and old love the merry-go-round ride. As a matter of fact, it is America’s favorite amusement ride.

The terms “Carousel” and ” Merry-Go-Round” are synonyms. In the United States, they are most often called carousels. Europeans usually call them merry-go-rounds. Whatever you call them, millions of us will take a ride on one each summer. This is especially true for little tykes who are not yet ready for roller coasters and other thrill rides.

Carousels are enjoyed at amusement parks, midways, and many other venues around the world. There are plenty of indoor carousels at shopping malls, too. So, you can ride one even, in cold and snowy winter months. However, today the weather is spectacular. So today, go ride a carousel, with family, friends, or that special someone. And, it’s all but certain it’s going to be a warm evening. So, if you work during the day, take a ride tonight.

Carousel History

Carousels have been around since medieval times in Europe and the Middle East. Knights used the earliest carousels to practice jousting and swordsmanship They used it to hone their skills before competitions or battles. The knights sat on horse figurines as they went around in a circle and took aim with their swords at objects placed just outside of the slowly spinning carousel.

In the 17th century, carousels emerged as a source of entertainment for the general public. The first merry-go-rounds were manually spun. Hailing back to the first Medieval carousels, the ride originally had horse figurines. Nowadays, you often find other animals and characters featured on the ride, depending on upon its location. For example, theme parks include characters that fit the theme of the park. On most carousels, some of the characters go up and down as the ride is moving. And, some of them are stationary on the platform.  Also, there are comfortable stationary benches for lovers and seniors.

1861, Thomas Bradshaw unveiled the first steam-powered merry-go-round at the Alysham Fair in Norfolk, England. Then on July 25, 1871, William Schneider received a U.S. Patent for the modern merry-go-round design. He is the Father of the modern carousel.

Now, the merry-go-round is almost always one of the rides at amusement parks, midways, and traveling fairs. You can also ride one at many indoor malls, at beaches, and at parks.

Did You Know? Often there were brass rings above the rides. If riders managed to grab and pull the ring, they were treated to an extra ride for free. There are only about twenty carousels left that have this brass ring.

The Oldest Carousel

The oldest carousel in the world is still in existence in at Wilhelmsbad Park in Hanau, Germany. Franz Ludwig Cancrin designed it. The carousel was built in 1780. The original carousel had two chariots with horses and two riding horses. In 1882 it was rebuilt and contained four chariots with two horses each and two pairs of riding horses. Time has taken its toll on the carousel, and it no longer moves. The last ride was in 1932.

The oldest operating carousel is in Vermolen Boden-Karussel at the Efteling Theme Park in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands. It was built in 1865. Originally, it was horse-drawn. Now it uses electrical power.

The oldest carousel in the United States is the Flying Horse in Oak Bluffs, Ma. It was built in 1876.

Mall Merry Go Round Carousel Day

Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise

Originally, carousels used by Medieval knights ran counterclockwise. This allowed the knights to use their dominant right hand to practice hitting objects placed just outside of the outer edge of the carousel. As amusement parks and others built merry-go-rounds, some designed them to go clockwise, while others built them to operate counterclockwise.

There is no set rule on which way they should go. The majority of carousels in the United States go counterclockwise. In Europe, they largely go clockwise. It’s easy to tell which way the merry-go-round will turn. Simply look at the direction the horses or characters are facing.

How to Celebrate National Carousel Day

It’s fun and easy to celebrate National Carousel Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Take the kids to an amusement park to ride the Merry-Go-Round.
  • No kids? No Problems. Go ride on a carousel. It’s fun for all ages.
  • Ride a Merry-Go-Round that you’ve never been on before.
  • Take pictures of carousels. Share the pictures on social media.

History and Origin of National Carousel Day

In 2014, National Carousel Day was created by carousel historian Ronald Hopkins and National Carousel Association’s President Bette Largent. The U.S. Patent issued a patent for the modern merry-go-round design on July 25, 1871. Hence, July 25 is the date to celebrate this holiday. It was issued to William Schneider from Davenport, Iowa. Schneider is the father of modern carousels.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. If you’d like this to become a true “National” day, contact your congressperson.

World Listening Day

Headphones, When is World Listening Day, July 18 holidays

About World Listening Day

When is World Listening Day? This holiday is is always celebrated on July 18

Shhh! Lend me your ear. Listen up, as I’m not going to say this again. Today is World Listening Day. The goal of this July 18 holiday is to raise awareness of the acoustic ecology or environment that surrounds you. It is also a day better understand the soundscape and to celebrate good listening practices. There are two key communication skills humans need to successfully circumnavigate their daily lives. They are talking and listening. Most of us have mastered the gift of gab with little or no difficulty. But, our listening skills often leave something to be desired. We encourage you to use this holiday to get in tune with the soundscape, and to learn how to really hear what people are telling you.

Do you have to get out the megaphone to get people to hear you? Do you ever get the sense that people aren’t really listening to the really important things you have to say? Many of us think we are good listeners. But, that often just isn’t the case. Many of us are good talkers, but our listening skills have room for improvement. If you’ve ever caught yourself formulating a reply while a person is still talking to you, then you are not hearing and truly absorbing all the speaker has to say. Do you hear what I’m saying?

You may be wondering just what the concept of “soundscape” means. A soundscape is the acoustic environment as perceived by humans. Why is this important? While walking in a forest, or a city street, those background noises and conversations might be important to your safety.

Today’s Deep Thought: If everyone is talking, who is listening? Conversely, if everyone is listening, who’s doing the talking?

Listening Facts and Trivia

Here are some interesting listening facts and trivia.

  • The average person hears between 20,000 and 30,000 words a day.
  • Typically, we can recall about 50% of what a person says immediately after they are done talking. And, just an hour later, we can recall just 20% of it. How can you improve this percentage?
  • We listen at 125 – 250 words per minute. But we think at 1000 – 3000 words per minute.
  • 85% of what we learn is from listening.
  • Research shows that men only use half their brain to listen while women engage both lobes.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Listening Day

Here are a few ideas on how to participate in World Listening Day:

  • Stop talking and listen.
  • Go to a very quiet place and see how many sounds you can hear and identify.
  • Resist the temptation to formulate a reply as someone else is speaking.
  • After someone has spoken, repeat or summarize what they said back to them to confirm you heard what they said and understand it.
  • Participate in the World Listening Project’s theme for the year.
  • Donate to the World Listening Project.
  • Improve the acoustics or soundscape of your environment to help you become a better listener.

Deep Woods Thought for Today: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make any noise?

Today's Quotes

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” – – Epictetus

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” – – Winston Churchill

“When a woman is talking to you, listen to what she says with her eyes.” – – Victor Hugo

History and Origin of World Listening Day

The non-profit organization World Listening Project (WLP) created World Listening Day in 2010. They did so to honor and commemorate the birthday of Raymond Murray Schafer. He was born on July 18, 1933. Murray is a creator, composer, environmentalist, and author of the book The Tuning of the World. Also, Murray is the founder of the modern study of acoustic ecology.

This is a global holiday seeking to promote a better understanding of environmental culture, and society by listening as well as audio recording in the field.

World Kebab Day

Shrimp Shish Kebab Day

About World Kebab Day

When is World Kebab Day? This holiday is celebrated on the second Friday of July

Have you decided what’s for dinner at your house tonight? How about having “dinner on a stick!?” Today is World Kebab Day. Kebabs have an “out of this world” flavor. On this July holiday, people all over the world are putting their favorite meats, vegetables, and fruits on skewers, and slathering it with sauce and seasonings. Then, they are cooking their shish kabob or doner kebab over a smoky grill.

There are many types of kebabs. Shish kababs are most common, especially in Asia and North America. Cooked on a skewer over a smoky fire, they include any variety of meats, vegetables, and fruits. Doner Kebabs are also popular. They are used primarily for meat used in gyros.  Doner kebabs have layers of meats stacked vertically in a cone shape. While cooking, the outer layers are shaved or cut off and used for gyros and pitas. While there are well over 50 types of kebabs, some of the more popular include Butahkalmi, Chuanr, Espetadas, Gyros, Halabi, Galouti, and Souvlaki.

How do you like your Kebab? Some people like meat, veggies, and fruit mixed together on a single skewer. Others prefer meat on one stick, and veggies on another. On average, people eat 2 – 3 skewers of kebabs at a meal. But, it can be more. We tend to eat more meat only skewers. There is no standard size. Some skewers are larger than others. So, there’s no standard number of pieces of food on a skewer either.

What’s your favorite side dish to serve with kebabs? They are most often served on a bed of wild or seasoned rice.

The History of Kebabs

Kebabs are made with bite-sized pieces of food speared onto a skewer or stick. Everyone says they originated in the Middle East. While that’s true, its popularity has certainly made its way around the globe. And every culture seems to have its own version of food on a stick (or skewer), using all sorts of meats and fish, vegetables, fruits, and importantly seasonings and spices. Wherever in the world you consume kebabs, it is most likely cooked on a grill to add a smoky flavor. Have shish kebabs, doner kebabs, or your favorite variety. When traveling to other countries, try kebabs made in local restaurants. You’ll be glad that you did!

In the Middle East, kebabs were first made of heavily seasoned meats. Meats were most often lamb and beef.  Originally, people cooked meats and vegetables cooked on separate skewers. This was likely due to different lengths of cooking times. Chinese shish kebabs frequently include mutton, chicken, duck, or goose. Even today, it is common to find kebabs cooked on city street corners. In Cyrus, pork, lamb, and mutton are commonly used. In America, beef, chicken, pork, and fish are commonly used. Even vegetarians enjoy a good kebab. Simply use tofu instead of meat.

Kebab Trivia

Amaze your friends with your shish kebab trivia knowledge.

  • The practice of cooking meats on a stick goes back to ancient times.
  • They originated in Turkey.
  • The word “kebab” means “to roast”. However, they are most often grilled.
  • The first recorded use of the word “kebab” was in a Turkish script of Kyssa-i Yusuf in 1377.
  • Every Turkish cookbook has a chapter called kebaplar with dozens of kebab recipes.
  • If it is food and can be put on a skewer, it’s a candidate for shish kebabs.
  • In the Muslim world, the word is a symbol of immigration.

Today’s Deep Thought: If you put a hotdog on a long stick and cook it over a campfire, is it a Hot Dog Kebab!? We believe the answer is “yes”. What do you think!?

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Kebab Day

Here are a few ideas on how to participate in World Kebab Day:

  • This is a food holiday, so celebrate by eating kebabs for lunch and dinner.
  • Put your skewers to work. Try a kebab recipe you’ve never had before.
  • The weather is great for an outdoor party. So, hold a kebab party. Have your guests bring a few skewers of their favorite recipe. Then, fire up the grill and cook them all up. There’s going to be plenty of variety to try.
  • If you’re too busy to cook tonight, find a local restaurant that has them on their menu, and go out to eat.

History and Origin of World Kebab Day

Our research has not yet uncovered who created World Kebab Day. Obviously, it is someone who enjoys their meal on a stick. While there is much written about the history of kebabs, we have yet to find information about the creation of this fun food day that is celebrated around the globe.

We have traced references to this holiday back to 2020.

Dimples Day. When is National Dimples Day? July 9 Holidays. gelasin

About National Dimples Day

When is National Dimples Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 9

Do you have Gelasin?  They are an indentation or a depression in your skin, most often on the cheeks of your face. If you have gelasin, then you will thoroughly enjoy National Dimples Day. Otherwise known as Dimples, this July 9 holiday is a cause for celebration for people with gelasin. Only a small percentage of the population is lucky enough to have them.

People who have dimples are considered lucky. As a matter of fact, in Chinese culture, they are a sign of good luck. Babies with dimples are cute. Women with dimples are considered beautiful. And men who have them are handsome. They are also a sign of heroism and innocence. So, if you have them, smile as they are visible when smiling.

Gelasin are fashionable. They never seem to go out of style. Dimples are so desirable that in 1936, Isabella Gilbert invented a dimple maker. She applies for a patent on October 6, 1936. The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent #104345A on August 31, 1937.

About Dimples

Gelasin are not too common. Only 20- 30 % of people around the world have them. Scientists disagree whether they are genetic, a birth defect, or just a random occurrence. They are a natural indentation of the skin. They are formed by a defect or variation in the zygomaticus major muscle. This muscle controls facial expression. Cheek dimples are the most common and are visible when smiling.

People who have them usually have two, one on each side of the face. In rare occurrences, it is on just one side of the face. They also may appear in the corners of the mouth. Some people have a dimple or chin cleft. And, they can occur on the lower back. They are called “Dimples of Venus”. Venus is the Roman goddess of beauty, love, and sexual desire. Women who have this are considered very beautiful.  For men with them on their lower back, it is called “Dimples of Apollo”. Apollo is the ancient Roman sun god.

History and Origin of National Dimples Day

Graceful Grady from Atlanta, GA. is the founder and Chief Dimples Officer of National Dimples Day LLC. This fun-filled holiday was created in 2022. After hearing about all kinds of daily holidays in the media and from friends, Grady searched the internet for a holiday to celebrate dimples. Unable to find one, Grady created this fun holiday.

According to their website, the goal of this holiday is to “spread the word and celebrate globally the rarity”. In that sense, we are surprised this day is not called World Dimples Day.

Graceful Grady selected July 9 “because I wanted a day where we didn’t have to share it with multiple holidays, I definitely wanted it doing the summer but after the 4th of July and before Labor Day, and a day where all dimples can be displayed…including Dimples of Venus and Dimples of Apollo. July 9th was perfect.

Oxymoron Day

Sunset Week

About Oxymoron Day

When is Oxymoron Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 13

Today is a rather inane holiday. It’s Oxymoron Day. On this July 13 Holiday, we celebrate and use contradictory terms that we use in everyday language without giving it a second thought. And we clarify the definition of oxymoron.  Oxymorons are so common that we hear and speak them, yet don’t even think about the fact that when the words are used together, they don’t make sense. For example, you might say this summer weather is awfully good. Really!? Does this statement mean the weather is awful? Or, is the weather good? When describing our drive home from work, we might say the traffic was terrific. In actuality, we might be describing a long commute with traffic jams and detours.

On Oxymoron Day we raise awareness of the use of these idiosyncrasies in our daily language. Listen for them in the things you say and read. You might be amazed at how many oxymorons you hear each day. Listen for the odd and quirky way combinations of wards can be interpreted. For example can you think of more than one meaning for the term “baby sitter”? If the answer is yes, you are going to have a lot of fun celebrating and participating in Oxymoron Day.

Definition of an Oxymoron

Here’s the definition of oxymoron:

An oxymoron is a figure of speech or a combination of words when spoken or written together are incongruous, contradictory, or non-sensical. The verb form of the word is oxymoronic. the adverb form is oxymoronically.

List of Oxymorons

There are many, perhaps countless oxymorons. Here are some of them:

  • Working Vacation- one of my favorites
  • unbiased opinion
  • Climb down
  • Military Intelligence
  • Senate Intelligence Committee
  • Time Management –  Time never stops or even slows down.
  •  Hospital Food – is it even edible?
  • Awfully good
  • Traffic is terrific.
  • I hope the snow keeps up. – Then it won’t come down, right!?
  • Civil War
  • Holy War
  • icy hot
  • one-man band
  • good grief – One of Charlie Brown’s favorites
  • grow smaller
  • deceptively honest
  • found missing
  • lead balloon
  • pretty ugly
  • same difference
  • freezer burn
  • wise fool
  • minor crisis

….. And the list goes on, and on.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Oxymoron Day

Here are some ideas on how you can enjoy Oxymoron Day:

  • If you here someone say an oxymoron, point it out to them.
  • Include as many oxymorons in your speech and writing today. See if anyone notices them for what they are.
  • Create or identify oxymoron.

Today's Quote

“The avoidance of taxes is the only intellectual pursuit that still carries any reward.” – – John Maynard Keyes

History and Origin of Oxymoron Day

World UFO Day

Space Day, When is World UFO Day

About World UFO Day

When is World UFO Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 2

Are we alone in the universe? Scientists estimate there are over 2 trillion galaxies out there in space. There are countless stars and planets. How could there not be other intelligent life forms? Speculation is only heightened by the irregular siting of Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFOs. The Roswell Incident and the secretive, off-limits Area 51 only heightens speculation. Today is World UFO Day. If this July 2 holiday seems alien to you, we certainly understand. It is a special day that comes to us, literally from out of this world.

World UFO Day supporters seek to get governments to fess up to the existence of UFOs. Many people believe that UFOs from outer space have already visited us, and a big, government cover-up is hiding the facts from the public.

The date for this special day is the date of the Roswell Incident, a historical event leading to wide speculation and belief that aliens have indeed visited us. In 1947, an object crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. This official explanation is it was a military crash. But to this day, millions of people believe it was actually an alien spacecraft. Many people believe the Alien remains are secretly held in Area 51 inside a secret Air Force facility in Nevada.

Organizers are downright serious about convincing the overall public to believe that we indeed have been visited by aliens from outer space. They are seeking to get the U.S. and other governments to admit to what they believe is a reality.

Have we been visited by extra-terrestrial beings? You make the call.

The Roswell Incident

July 2, 1947, is a date well known to UFO believers (Isn’t everyone!?). On this date, Mac Brazel, a rancher in northwest Roswell, New Mexico discovered the wreckage of a metallic object on his ranch. The wreckage and the metal it was made of were strange. He contacted military authorities who investigated the site and removed the wreckage. The first military reports referenced a mysterious, Unidentified Flying Object. These reports were later rescinded, leading to wide speculation and claims of a massive government cover-up of the discovery of UFOs from outer space. It also sparked fear of a UFO invasion and rumors of other incidents. Of course, that speculation is alive and well today.

The remains of the wreckage of the alien spacecraft are believed to be held at Area 51 on a secretive Air Force Base in Nevada.

You can go to International UFO and Research Center in Roswell, NM.  You will find a wealth of information about UFOs and what might be hidden from the public at Area 51. Will we ever learn the full truth about Area 51? Perhaps not. But, many people keep on trying.

History and Origin of World UFO Day

Throughout the 20th century, people became more interested in whether there were other intelligent life forms, or if we are all alone. So we know about the increasing speculation on this topic. However, we do not know who created World UFO Day, or exactly when it was first celebrated.  We suspect it evolved the speculation caused by the Roswell Incident.

About World Population Day

When is World Population Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 11

Stand up and be counted. Today is World Population Day. This special United Nations holiday evolved from Five Billion Day. On this July 11 holiday many years ago, the world’s population was estimated to reach five billion people.  We certainly have added a lot of human beings since then.

With all the issues related to the billions of people, World Population Day strives to raise awareness of global population issues. The United Nations seeks to promote awareness of issues related to population growth, including the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.

Population Day focuses on people under 25, reproductive issues, and health. The United Nations World Population Fund (UNFPA) sponsors this annual holiday. According to the UNFPA website, the focus of this day is on people under 25 and those of reproductive age. This day seeks to provide education and awareness of reproductive health, reproductive choice, and family planning, and to provide a better future for young people.

The Population on Planet Earth

The population of the world has increased steadily since the Medieval times. With an ever-growing world population, people became interested in “Five Billion Day” on July 11, 1987. This is the approximate date when the world’s population reached five billion people. This sparked the creation of World Population Day. But, the population growth story does not peak there. According to the United Nations Population Fund, there was an estimated 7.75 billion people on December 2019.

Sometime in 2023, India will surpass China as the most populous country in the world. They both currently have 1.4 billion people. The United States is a distant third with 339 million people.

The world’s population will reach over 9 billion people by 2050, and over 11 billion by 2100. Can the world feed that many people? The answer quite frankly is, we don’t know.

Did You Know? Worldwide, over 200.000 babies are born each day!

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Population Day

Here’s how you can participate in World Population Day:

  • Help to bring awareness of these issues to the youth in your community.
  • When your country holds a census, stand up and be counted.

World Tofu Day and National Tofu Day

Earth Animation

About Tofu Day

When is Tofu Day? World Tofu Day is July 26. UK National Tofu Day is September 1.

There are two days for vegetarians to celebrate tofu. Aren’t you lucky!? The goal of both World Tofu Day and the UK’s National Tofu Day is to celebrate tofu as a vegetarian alternative to meats and fish. It celebrates healthy tofu and encourages people to stop the cruelty to animals through a more vegetarian diet. Vegetarians and animal rights groups applaud Tofu and promote its consumption. A second goal of these two special holidays is to spread awareness of the benefits of eating a plant-based diet, especially as it impacts animals. SPA Canada an animal rights group and the creator of World Tofu Day, uses this day to strongly fight to end animal cruelty.

Did You Know? The roots of vegetarianism date back to 600 BC in ancient Greece. However, it wasn’t until the 10th Century that the Chinese perfected the process of making Tofu. There are also some references to Tofu being first created in Japan around the same time.

Whether you are celebrating World Tofu Day or National Tofu Day, tofu should definitely be on your menu today. Recipes abound and are just an internet search away.

Special thought just for this day: You can’t have your tofu and eat it, too.

About Tofu

Asian in origin, the word “Tofu” in Mandarin translates to “spoiled beans”. Early Chinese knew that tofu was healthy. They associated the consumption of tofu with a long and healthy life. In addition, it didn’t cost much, serving as an affordable option for those who didn’t have money for meat.

Tofu is a vegetable product made from soybeans. It is rich in vitamins and protein. Tofu is a healthy and organic substitute for meat and fish and is a staple of vegetarians. Soft, bland, and custard-like, Tofu doesn’t have much flavor. Like potatoes or rice, it’s what you put on it, that makes it so enjoyable.

There are several steps to making tofu. The first steps are to make soy milk. A second series of steps produces tofu. You can have extra fun today, by making your own tofu… How to make soy milk and tofu

How to Celebrate and Participate in Tofu Day

There are many things you can do to celebrate World Tofu Day and UK National Tofu Day. Here are a few ideas:

  • Eat tofu.
  • Buy it at your grocery store or order it in a restaurant.
  • Make Tofu at home

History and Origin of Tofu Day

World Tofu Day was created by the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) Canada in 2014. SPA Canada is an animal rights protection group that seeks to end animal cruelty and encourage humans to practice plant-based diets.

National Tofu Day was created in the United Kingdom. It appears to have started around 2017-2018. We have not yet identified who created it. This special holiday is beginning to gain popularity in the United States.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. Our research found no UK parliamentary law or proclamation for this day. We also found no proclamation from the queen or any member of the royal family.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is so important to distinguish and identify true national days.
