Today is Canadian Dominion Day, also simply called “Canada Day”. This July 1 holiday is the birthday of Canada, our northern neighbor, and the second largest country in the world. In 1867, the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada and some Maritime Provinces joined the Dominion of Canada.

Canada Day is a celebration of Canadian nationalism, heritage, and pride. The country became self-governing on July 1st, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA Act) in the British Parliament. The holiday was originally known as Dominion Day. ON October 27, 1862, the Canadian Parliament changed it to Canada Day.

How to Celebrate Canadian Dominion Day

Canada Day is a Canadian national holiday and is celebrated in a big way. Government offices, banks, and businesses close for the holiday. It is a paid holiday.

It is similar to the celebration of Independence Day in the United States. Canadians celebrate their national birthday with parades, picnics, and fireworks.

History and Origin of Canada Day

The Constitution Act of 1867, also called the British North America Act, 1867, merged the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada province into one country. Later, the Canada Province was broken into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Then, they renamed the country Canada.

This Day in History

Here are a couple of things that happened on Canada Day:

  • U.S. postage stamps went on sale for the first time. (1847)
  • Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American War. (1898)
  • Estee Lauder, cosmetics magnate was born on this day in 1908.
