World Camel Day. Beast of Burden. June 22 holiday.

About World Camel Day

When is World Camel Day? This holiday is always tastefully enjoyed on June 22

Today is World Camel Day. This June 22 holiday encourages us to learn more about these amazing mammals and how nomads and other communities use this desert “Beast of Burden”. They are truly an amazing animal.

Camels were domesticated over 3,000 years ago. They are well adapted to life in hot, arid regions of the world. They can go long periods without food and water. When food and water sources are available, they “tank up” and store the water and food as fat in their humps. The fat provides energy and water. Then, as they travel across the desert, their body draws on this storage. The fat in their humps allows them to survive several weeks or more without any additional food or water.

Today’s Trivia: We call camels a “Beast of Burden” because they are versatile at transporting people and goods. Other beasts of burden include alpacas, donkeys, horses, llamas, mules, and oxen.

Did You Know: Camels are also called the “Ship of the Desert”.

Happy World Camel Day!!
