UN International Peace Day

Peace Sign Hand. When is World Peace Day? November 17 holidays

About International Peace Day

When is UN International Peace Day? Since 2002, it is always on September 21. Prior to this change, it was celebrated on the 3rd Tuesday of September.

UN International Peace Day is a September 21 holiday. It was created by a vote of the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. This day is dedicated to establishing and promoting World peace. It is celebrated by countries around the world. World peace is a valuable and worthy proposition. You would think it easy to accomplish, as no one really wants war and unrest. Unfortunately, complete world peace still proves unattainable. This is not to say that it is impossible, or even that the world has not moved in this direction. The world is truly more peaceful today than it was yesterday or the day before.

World Peace, what a hopeful thought. What an important goal. Unfortunately, world peace has evaded humanity throughout history. Skeptics say world peace and tranquility is nothing more than a fantasy. Yet, no progress is possible unless we try. While it has certainly been elusive, the optimistic character of human nature causes us to believe it is possible to attain.

The United Nations goal for this day is “a day of non-violence and cease-fire”. Wouldn’t it be nice if this one day succeeded and spread, country by country, day by day until there is no more war or violence? Can this goal ever succeed?  Former Beatle John Lennon had the right vision in his song “Imagine“.

How to Celebrate International Peace Day

You might ask what one person like yourself can do to promote world peace. Here are a few ideas:

  • First and foremost, support organizations that work toward world peace.
  • Then, join an organization that works toward world peace.
  • Write to your national leaders.
  • Seek ways to promote non-violence.
  •  On a personal level, try to make peace with those you don’t get along with. Extend the olive branch to an adversary today.
  • Finally, read Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”

History and Origin of International Peace Day

International Peace Day was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 (resolution 36/67). It was first held on the third Tuesday of September, starting in 1982. Beginning in 2002, the UN General Assembly changed the date, setting September 21st as the date for the yearly celebration of this day. So, this day is dedicated to establishing and promoting World peace. Without a doubt, we all hope and pray for success in this endeavor.

History and Origin of German Oktoberfest

The very first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810. It was held to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (King Ludwig 1) to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The wedding took place on October 12th, and a great horse race (in celebration of the marriage) was held a few days later on October 17th. Citizens celebrated the popular royal couple’s marriage annually. It became known as Oktoberfest.

Early Oktoberfest celebrations were held in October. The festival was eventually moved to September, as the weather was better earlier in the Fall.

Oktoberfest has been held annually since 1810. Throughout this time, it has been canceled a few times, due to wars, and once due to a major Cholera outbreak (1854) in the region.

Over the years, the festival grew. Carnival booths appeared. Beer became a central theme and flowed freely. Food was a big part of the festivities. And, later rides became a part of the festival activities. Millions of people annually flock to Oktoberfest in Munich.

Newspaper Carrier Day

International Newspaper Carrier Day. When is No New is Good News Day?

About Newspaper Carrier Day

When is Newspaper Carrier Day? This holiday is always observed on September 4

Newspaper Carrier Day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. This September 4 holiday also includes anyone who hawked the paper on the street, or at a newsstand. The list includes thousands, if not millions, of people. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. At that age, many, but not all, kids moved from newspaper delivery to restaurants, grocery stores, and retail type of jobs. Newspaper circulation has been dwindling for a few decades and will likely continue to do so. Online sources of news and information are replacing newspapers.

For the record: In 1950, there were 1,772 daily newspapers in the United States. Today, there are only 1,033. The number is expected to continue to drop. As a matter of fact, every time we check this number, it is lower.

Now, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars.

This day commemorates the hiring of the very first newspaper carrier. Newspaper carriers date back to the early 1800s. On September 4, 1833, 10-year-old Barney Flaherty became the first newspaper carrier. Benjamin Day, the publisher of The New York Sun, hired Barney Flaherty to sell papers for his penny press. The only job requirement was that he had to show that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes.

Nowadays, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars.

How to Celebrate Newspaper Carrier Day

Celebrate Newspaper Carrier Day today. Here are some ways to participate in this holiday:

  • If you still get the newspaper, give your carrier a thank you card.
  • Also, your carrier will appreciate a monetary gift inside the thank you card.
  • If you do not receive the newspaper, go online and read a little about newspaper carrier and their history.
  • Were you once a newspaper carrier? If so, sit down with a cup of coffee and the newspaper, and think about your experiences.

Today's Quote

History and Origin of Newspaper Carrier Day

Despite our extensive research, we did not find the creator of this day. We found lots of references and information on Newspaper Carrier Day.  However, we do not know (yet) who created it.

About Neither Rain nor Snow Day

When is Neither Rain nor Snow Day? This holiday is always observed on September 7

Let the sunshine into your life! Right now, we bet you’re thinking “this special day is about a tranquil weather day with neither rain nor snow”  ….wrong. Here’s the real scoop on this special day…. Neither Rain Nor Snow Day celebrates the opening of the first post office, the New York Post Office building on this day in 1914. This September 7 holiday is an annual event.

The following inscription was inscribed on the building:

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Here is the second misconception: A lot of people assume the inscription represents the Post Office motto. This assumption is incorrect. But, this inscription is very close to the old Pony Express rider’s motto. This leads to a third misconception.. ……The Pony Express was not a government-funded predecessor to today’s Post Office. The Pony Express was a courier and message delivery service. However, it was privately owned and funded.

Now that we have the history and trivia out of the way, let’s go and enjoy the day. We hope you use Neither Rain Nor Snow Day to show your appreciation to your postal delivery people, especially those who walk their routes.

National Tailgating Day

When is National Tailgating Day?

About National Tailgating Day

When is National Tailgating Day? This holiday is observed on the first Saturday in September

Football is back and the leaves on the trees have begun to turn in splendid beauty. Fall weather has turned cool, crisp, and nothing short of luscious. Are you going to the big game? Then, it’s time for a tailgate party. Grab your football, pack up the grill and cooler, and let’s all head to the game. While today is National Tailgating Day, there are games every week all Fall long. So, technically we can celebrate this holiday before every game!

The very first football game was held on November 6, 1869. The term “Tailgate party” had not yet been coined. But, fans arrived early to savor the moment, and to enjoy some food, beverages, and camaraderie before the game between Rutgers University and Princeton University. Perhaps they tossed the football around the parking lot, too.

Have a Happy National Tailgating Day!

Tailgating History and Trivia

On November 6, 1869, the first American football game occurred. Rutgers played Princeton at Rutgers University. Rutgers won 6-4. The tailgating party preceding football games has a long history. As a matter of fact, raucous fans held the first tailgate party at the Rutgers vs. Princeton game. Tailgating parties quickly became routine a professional, college, and even high school football games.

More Tailgate Party Trivia

  • An estimated 45 million Americans tailgate before the game each year.
  • The Guinness World Record Attendance at a regular NFL game occurred on September 20, 2009. Dallas played the NY Giants at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, TX.

Did You Know? Historians believe the roots of tailgating go back to the Civil War battle at Bull Run. Well-to-do citizens of Washington, D.C. went in horse-drawn buggies to the hills around the battle site to watch the battle. They brought picnic baskets with them.

How to Celebrate National Tailgating Day

Football fans, you know what to do to celebrate this day. Let the tailgate party begin. Load up the truck, SUV, or car. Head on out several hours early, to enjoy a meal, a few beers perhaps, and lots of fun in the parking lot, before settling into your seats at the stadium, to watch your favorite team roll over the competition.

  • Before you enter the stadium for the game, arrive in the parking lot a few hours early.
  • Then, set out the table and the grill to make a big meal. The selection of the meal is your choice.
  • While the food is grilling, toss a football around in the parking lot.
  • As you sit around eating the meal, trash talk the other team and talk about how your team is going to destroy them.

What to Eat and Drink –  Many of us will opt for traditional hamburgers, hot dogs, or Italian sausage, with any number of side dishes. Chili is extremely popular and is made hotter and hotter, as the Fall days cool down. Do not feel limited in your tailgate party menu selection. Some people will set up a table and chairs, to enjoy a steak or even ribs cooked right there in the parking lot. If local laws and stadium rules allow, alcohol may be consumed. Beer is by far the most popular choice.

Buffalo Bills Football Stadium. Tailgating Day

History and Origin of National Tailgating Day

National Tailgating Day evolved from college football games, which are traditionally held on Saturdays. Hence, we celebrate this day on an early September Saturday, when it is perfect football weather.

This special event was created by Luke Lorick the President of “Tailgating Challenge” in 2016.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. As football is a truly American sport and is wildly popular, we sure hope our president or congress formally declares this a national holiday soon.

Definition of “National” Days – And find out why it is so important to distinguish and identify true national days.

National Sewing Month

Seamstress. When is National Sewing Month? Housewife Day

About National Sewing Month

When is National Sewing Month? This special holiday is always celebrated in September

September is National Sewing Month. It is fitting that we set aside one month each year to recognize the importance of this skill to a well-dressed society. Unfortunately, many of us cannot even sew a button back onto a shirt. This is especially true, as most people nowadays do not sew their own clothing. So, we should not forget to recognize and appreciate the people who make the clothes that make us look so good.

Once mankind tossed away the fig leaf and began to wear real clothes, needlework became a very important skill. Sewing was invented thousands of years ago and was probably the reason that fig leaves went out of style. It is a basic, yet invaluable and essential skill. In earlier days almost everyone knew how to sew out of necessity. Even frontiersmen needed to learn the basics of how to sew, to occasionally repair clothes in the wilderness

Nowadays, fewer and fewer people can sew. Store-bought clothes have all but replaced homemade clothing. It’s reached such a point, that if a button comes off, many people will toss out a good shirt, as they don’t know how to sew the button back on!

Famous Seamstress: The most well-known American seamstress is Betsy Ross, who made the very first American flag. See Flag Day.

Today’s Logo: “A stitch in time saves nine.”

How to Celebrate National Sewing Month

Here are some ways you can participate during this month:

  • Celebrate this special month, by learning how to sew.
  • If you already know how to sew, but have not done so in a while, make plans to sew a new outfit.
  • Catch up on the backlog of projects.
  • Check all of your buttons.
  • If you are a tailor or seamstress, simply enjoy the month. Or, make some special article of clothing for yourself.
  • Learn this important skill. It often comes in handy.

History and Origin of National Sewing Month

It is not known who, or what organization, led the effort to make this a special calendar event. But, interest reached the highest office in the land. In1982 President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation declaring September as National Sewing Month. President Reagan declared it “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation”.

Because it was a presidential proclamation, this calendar event is a true “National” event.
