Take a Hike Day

When is Public Lands Day, Take a Hike Day? November 127 holidays.

When is Take a Hike Day? This holiday is always observed on November 17

Take a Hike Day is today, a November 17 holiday. Walking, and hiking are excellent ways to exercise and get into shape. Hikes are distinguished from walks, in that they are taken in the woods, hills, mountains, or somewhere else in a natural setting. Hikes not only give you exercise, but they also provide scenic sites and vistas, that are good for the relaxation of the mind and soul.

There is some reference to this as National Tell Your Boss to Take a Hike Day. It likely evolved out of Take a Hike Day. We have found no factual information whatsoever, on this derivation of Take a Hike Day. Also, we believe that telling your boss to “take a hike”, may not be healthy for your employment situation.

Some people have suggested that this day be used to tell someone to “take a hike”. We leave this use of this interpretation up to the reader!

Use this special day to take a hike, alone or with others. Make it a goal to hike today and work off a little excess weight so you can put it right back on during Thanksgiving. You’ll be glad you did.

How to Celebrate Take a Hike Day

Are you ready to hit the trail? Here’s how to enjoy a Fall day:

  • Pick a trail and take a hike. It doesn’t have to be a challenging one. But if you’re already an experienced hiker, then select a more difficult trek.
  • If you’re looking to hike through the fall foliage, you will probably have to travel quite a distance. The leaves have already fallen through much of the U.S. Invite someone to join you on the trail. It is always much more fun when you are with someone. And, you never know when the “buddy system” is needed.

Small Business Saturday

Mall of the Americas. When is Small Business Saturday and Shopping Reminder Day? Retail Black Friday deals. Buy Nothing Day

When is Small Business Saturday? This holiday is the Saturday after Thanksgiving

Small Business Saturday is held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And, it’s a really important day for your neighborhood retail shops, helping them to get a slice of the huge holiday market. Following on the heels of Black Friday shopping, don’t miss participating in this important holiday.

Small Business Saturday is the much smaller kid brother to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Small businesses participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, their efforts are dwarfed by the big, national chain stores and the monster-sized Amazon. Of course, small businesses do not have sizeable advertising budgets and brand awareness to compete with the big stores on these two mega-shopping days. Sales numbers on these two days can actually be lower for small businesses, as consumers focus upon the many deals the big stores offer and advertise over every media outlet in existence.

Small Business Saturday is a hugely important day for small business owners. On this day, the focus is solely on these small, hometown shops. It brings awareness to the presence of these small shops. Before today, you just might have driven past these shops, without really seeing them as you head to a big box store. Small Business Saturday drives shoppers to local stores in big numbers, if only for the day. It builds awareness that there is indeed a shop right in the community, that offers a plethora of different and unique holiday gift ideas. This day can have long-term, positive effects on your local businesses well beyond this one day. And, it has a positive impact on your local economy.

We hope you embrace this special day, by shopping at locally-owned retail outlets. And, keep them in mind all year long.

Why Support Small Business Saturday?

There are many reasons to support locally-owned businesses in your community.

On Small Business Saturday, these quaint little shops offer promotions and sales. Free samples are sometimes given out. You might find a sweet treat of chocolate or a cookie, as you enter the store. This day has seen consistent year-over-year sales growth rates, but not as big as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The small business employs millions of workers. These are your neighbors and friends, who live on your street, go to your church, and belong to your clubs and organizations. In addition to the owners, if large enough, small, local, Mom and Pop businesses can employ family members and a few other people who live in your community.

Your neighborhood stores are not able to take advantage of volume discounts from their suppliers. As a result, profit margins are much smaller. Frankly, they need your support.

Small business survives on your patronage. They have little or no advertising budgets. They rely on outdoor signage, and a good location. Word of mouth is very important for generating sales. Outstanding and personal customer service is essential for gaining loyal, repeat customers.

Small Business Saturday encourages us to support our local businesses. It focuses on local retail outlets. This applies to small, locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, and delis as well. Use this day to patronize your local mom-and-pop restaurants and delis, too. Supporting them puts money back into your local community.

Your small, local businesses offer a unique and pleasant atmosphere. They often offer products that you can’ get in the big box stores or online. These products are more often than not “Made in America” and created by your hometown crafters. Product quality is often much better, too.

How to Participate in Small Business Saturday

Participation in Small Business Saturday is straight forward:

  • Support the many small businesses in your local area. They depend on you for their survival.
  • Support small businesses online. They have the ominous task of competing in the internet marketplace dominated by Amazon and a few others.

Did You Know? There are over 33 million small businesses in the United States.

Today's Chuckle

History and Origin of Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday was created in 2010 by the credit card company American Express. They launched it as a marketing campaign to aid small business owners. It was designed to help small business owners gain exposure and awareness for their businesses.

Small Business Saturday became an official holiday the next year (2011), with the support of President Barak Obama, U.S. Senators, and Washington state mayors.

Pumpkin Destruction Day

When is Pumpkin Destruction Day? Pumpkin Toss Day. November 3 holiday

When is Pumpkin Destruction Day? This holiday is observed on the second Saturday in November

Pumpkin Destruction Day comes along at just the right time. Halloween is over. Sadly, it is time to dispose of leftover pumpkins. So, why not have a little fun while doing so.? First of all, farms, garden centers and many other stores usually have plenty of unsold pumpkins. Secondly, you and I likely have carved and uncarved pumpkins. We need to dispose of them in some manner. However, your uncarved pumpkins can be kept for Thanksgiving decorations.

The objective of Pumpkin Destruction Day is to have a little fun while destroying leftover pumpkins. Once they have been smashed, dropped from a sufficient height, jumped on, or otherwise obliterated, it is important to put the remains into your compost pile or a composting facility. A big part of the reason for this day is to keep millions of pumpkins out of landfills.

Today’s Band: Smashing Pumpkins

How to Celebrate Pumpkin Destruction Day

Today is all about having fun with pumpkins as you destroy them. Use your imagination. Make up a game or other fun way to destroy them. There’s an almost unlimited number of ways to destroy them.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Smash them with a hammer or mallet.
  • Make a game of who can hit it with a rock from a distance.
  • Simply slice it into pieces.
  • Toss them down from the top of a ladder or tall building.
  • Shoot them out of an air cannon.
  • Use them as target practice for a bow and arrow or a rifle.

Regardless of what method you use to secure their demise, the final step is to compost them. Don’t put them into the landfill.

History and Origin of Pumpkin Destruction Day

Adam Pugh, the General Manager of Rock Ranch in The Rock, Georgia created this day in 2006. Pugh asked the ranch owners for permission for people to “smash the leftover pumpkins for fun”. The smashed pumpkins would be left in the field to rot as compost, thus avoiding putting them needlessly into landfills. Rock Ranch is a 1,500-acre ranch created by Chick-fill-A founder S. Truett Cathy as a foster home for kids. Pugh was given permission for this event, and it was a huge success.

This holiday originated as “Pumpkin Destruction Day”. It is also listed in the 2020 Chase Calendar of Events as “Pumpkin Destruction Day”, with reference to Adam Pugh, the creator. Some internet sites incorrectly refer to it as “National Pumpkin Destruction Day”.

We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation creating this day as a true national day.

Definition of “National” Days – Learn why it is important to identify and distinguish true National days.

Additionally, there are several internet references to “Pumpkin Destruction Day” or “Pumpkin Smashing Day” sponsored by individual local greenhouses or pumpkin farms. These local events are generally held a week shortly after Halloween.

It was originally intended as an educational tool to explain the rental market and the effects of monopoly in the marketplace. It was popular among professors and students.

Modifying and building upon Lizzie Magie’s game, Clarence Darrow created the first Monopoly game. He semi-copyrighted in 1934. (Does anyone know what a “semi-copyright is!?) Parker Brothers put the game on the market on November 5, 1935.

In 1991, Hasbro Company bought out Parker Brothers.

Philanthropy Day

Earth Animation. How to Create Holidays

When is Philanthropy Day? This holiday is always observed on November 15

National Philanthropy Day is today, a November 15 holiday. Throughout history, Philanthropists have made great contributions to those in need, and to worthy causes. According to the official National Philanthropy Day website, this day is set aside to “recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – have made to our lives, our communities, and our world.”

Great philanthropists are known in history for their many and frequent monetary contributions, big and small. Many of them do so in a quiet way, not looking for recognition. Others get a hospital wing, or a building named in their honor.

While we commonly view Philanthropy as a monetary contribution, voluntary efforts at fundraising are also within the definition of philanthropy. So, if you have little extra money to contribute, do so. If not, turn your labor effort into charitable cash contributions by participating in fundraisers, making you a Philanthropist!

How to Celebrate Philanthropy Day

  • Leave a great legacy. Be known for your contributions to people and worthy causes.
  • If you have enough assets to support a charity, a cause, or someone need, do so today. That makes you a philanthropist. You may not be giving millions, but you are doing your part.
  •  Contact a philanthropist, to seek a donation to someone in need or to a worthy cause.
