About International Tiara Day

When is International Tiara Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 24

Little girls love to dress up as a princess. And, most ladies enjoy being treated as a queen. A tiara makes all girls, young and old, feel like royalty. So, every female will love International Tiara Day. This May 24 holiday exists to make dreams happen.

Ladies, do you know the feeling you get when you put a tiara on your head? It’s a great feeling. That’s right, you feel like royalty! A tiara transforms you into the queen, princess, or duchess hidden inside every woman or girl. If you do not come from nobility, you may never have had the chance to wear a tiara before today. Opportunities and events where a tiara is worn are few and far between.

International Tiara Day was created, so you can experience this joyous feeling. This is an annual holiday, so now you can wear a tiara at least once a year!

Tip for the Guys: Give a tiara to each of the girls in your life. The girls will be elated. And, so will you!

A Crown Versus a Tiara

It is very important that you can distinguish between a crown and a tiara. You want to wear a tiara on International Tiara Day.

There are a few differences between them. Both are encrusted with jewels. A tiara is a type of crown. Tiaras are typically worn by women. Crowns are circular, while a tiara is semicircular. Crowns cover the entire head. A tiara covers only the front part of the head.

How to Celebrate International Tiara Day

Make this into the fun-filled day it is intended to be. There are so many ways to celebrate and enjoy International Tiara Day. Need ideas? Here are a few:

  • Wear a tiara. Savor and enjoy the royal feeling that comes with wearing it.
  • With a tiara firmly affixed atop your head, make some royal proclamations. They can be big or small.
  • Research your family roots, to see if any royalty is in your family tree.
  • Pamper yourself and your daughter(s). Give yourselves the royal treatment at a beauty or nail salon.
  • Go to a relaxing spa and get the works.
  • Give a tiara to young girls you know, and watch them smile!
  • Go to a high-end restaurant. If you order a steak, we suggest the “queen” cut.
  • Buy some new clothes or jewelry that is befitting a person of your high, noble stature.
  • With your tiara on your head, go online and read about the Queen Mum.

Today's Quote

“Always be yourself. No matter who’s around you being negative or thrusting negative energy at you. Block it off. Because whatever you believe, you become.” – – Michael Jackson

History and Origin of International Tiara Day

Barbara Bellisimo of “Season of Success” created this holiday n 2005. It is an international event, so women and girls around the world can feel like royalty. According to the creator it “empowers women to change their worlds, and to embrace their inner beauty”.

Bellisimo chose this date as it is the birthdate of Queen Victoria of England. She reigned as queen, beginning at the young age of 18. She ruled for 64 years, from 1837, until she died in 1901.

International Hummus Day

Garbanzo Beans for Hummus

When is International Hummus Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 13

Let’s give three cheers to the tasty little legume with a long history, which enjoys worldwide popularity, and is packed with protein, fiber, and vitamins. Today is International Hummus Day! This May 13 holiday celebrates the love of hummus. According to this holiday’s creator, International Hummus Day is about “connecting people all over the world around hummus. It’s a special opportunity”.

Making hummus is simple. There are many recipes. Hummus goes well with a wide variety of foods and is good on crackers. Try hummus as a dip, with a stick of celery or carrots. In addition to Chickpeas as the main ingredient, other items that may be included are olive oil, sesame paste (called “tahini”), garlic, and a variety of vegetables. In recent years, manufacturers have become creative, with all sorts of flavors, including avocado, lemon artichoke, red pepper, smoky bacon, and taco to name a few.

Make this a day to celebrate hummus and the garbanzo bean. We certainly will!!!

Did You Know? Kids and more than a few adults nickname chickpeas “Spider Eggs”.

About Hummus and Chickpeas

To have a conversation about Hummus, one must talk about the main ingredient, which is chickpeas, also called “garbanzo beans”. Chickpeas are a legume, a vegetable related to garden sweet peas. They are neither dairy nor a nut, so there are only a few people who may be allergic to them. Chickpeas have been around for thousands of years, dating back to an estimated 6,700 B.C. At that time, they were found in the wild, as the man had not yet begun to cultivate crops. The first historical written record goes back to 1,200 B.C. Chickpeas are native to the Middle East. Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon each claim to be where they originated.

There is definitely a lot to love about Chickpeas (and therefore Hummus). They taste good and are eaten by both humans and animals. Chickpeas are healthy and nutritious. They are high in protein and fiber, Vitamin C, B6, foliates, and potassium.  In addition to their nutritional value, garbanzo beans have health benefits, including reducing hunger pangs, lowering cholesterol levels, and reducing the risk of cancer.

How to Celebrate and Participate in International Hummus Day

What is the best way to celebrate this special day?

  • Eat hummus. Select your favorite flavor at the grocery store.
  • Make Humus at home. It’s easy.
  • Eat chickpeas. In addition to being the main ingredient in hummus, they are great in salads and soups.
  • Grow Chickpeas.

History and Origin of International Hummus Day

International Hummus Day was created by Ben Lang from Israel in 2012. Lang’s objective was “to create a holiday around a food that could bring people together from around the world”. We thank Ben for creating such a healthy and delicious holiday.

We traded emails with Ben Lang about this day. While his website about this day has the title “Hummus Day“, he prefers to call this holiday event “International Hummus Day”. He went on to say that he is open to all versions of the title.

It is not a true “National” day. We did not find any U.S. congressional records or presidential proclamations making this a “National” day. Nor, did we find any proclamation from the government of Israel.

National Hoagie Day

When is National Eat a Hoagie Day? September 14 and May 5 holidays. Submarine Sandwich

When is National Hoagie Day? This holiday is always a May 5 Holiday

National Hoagie Day is today. This May 5 holiday gives us a special day to enjoy and celebrate a big, tasty hoagie. This big sandwich is known by several names: hoagie, sub, submarine, or a hero sandwich. Hoagies are a regular on most diets in America. People eat them for lunch, dinner, and even as a late-night snack. It’s a quick meal or people on the go.

The popularity of the Hoagie sub is partly due to the diversity and variety of its contents. It can be hot or cold, luncheon meat or meatballs, and contains your choice of a variety of cheeses. Then, the fun begins as you pile on any number and combinations of extras.

For the Record: According to the Guinness World Book of Records the largest hoagie sandwich was made in Lebanon on May 22, 2011. It measured 2,411 feet 5 inches long.

Hoagies - Call Them What You Will

Italian immigrants working on Hog Island, PA created Hoagies in the early 20th century. This popular sandwich was originally called a “Hoggie”. Then, it became a “Hoagie”. Hoagies have a variety of other names. Many people call them “Submarines”. We also call them “Italian Subs”. It is usually shortened to “Subs”. As a matter of fact, “Sub” is the most common name given to this long sandwich.

We also call it a “Hero” sandwich. Food writer and columnist Clementine Paddleford once called it a sandwich so large “you had to be a hero to eat it”. As a result, people began asking at delis for a hero sandwich.

You can call it a “Grinder”, too. This is a very common term that originated in the New England area for the hoagie sandwich. There are two theories on how this name came about. First, some folks speculate it earned the name as you have to grind your teeth to chew the crusty roll. Second, it is Italian slang used by New England dockworkers.

And, it has yet another name. The shape of a hoagie looks like a torpedo. So, guess what some people call it!? You guessed it! In some parts of the country, you can order a torpedo sandwich and receive a Hoagie.

Have it Your Way

Everyone has a favorite Hoagie. One of the great things about this sandwich is its construction is endlessly versatile. Importantly, ordering a hoagie is not a time for indecision. Here are some of the big decisions you need to make when you order a hoagie:

  • Have it hot or cold.
  • Many delis and sub shops offer multiple types of bread. While Italian or plain is most common, there are many other breads to choose from. How does multi-grain or honey oat sound? These are just a couple of the often many bread options.
  • The texture of the roll is important to many of us. Some prefer a soft roll. While many devoted hoagie lovers say they absolutely must be made on a sub roll that is so crispy on the outside that it almost cuts your mouth and tongue.
  • The selection of meat is key to enjoying your hoagie. Ham and assorted Italian meats are the most popular choices.  You can also opt for chicken, turkey, or roast beef. Others prefer tuna sub. And, let’s not forget the tasty hot meatball sub.
  • If you’re a vegetarian, you can make a vegetarian hoagie.
  • Cheese is an absolute “Must have” for most hoagie fans. What kind do you like? Among the most popular cheese choices for subs are provolone and Swiss cheese. But, if you don’t like those two choices, there are plenty of other cheeses to choose from.
  • Now let’s select from an unending list of condiments. Hoagies usually begin with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Then sweet and hot peppers are often added. Many, many other options exist, too.
  • Importantly, to be a true Italian hoagie, it must have Italian dressing. Oil and vinegar qualify, too. But, other options exist. Mayonnaise is popular. So is plain oil or oil and vinegar.

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Hoagie Day

How can we celebrate and participate in National Hoagie Day?

  • Eat a Hoagie for at least one meal or a snack. Yes, they are good as a snack.
  • Companies and organizations – Treat your staff to subs for lunch.
  • Buy one.
  • Make one at home.

When is Herb Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in May

According to the creators of Herb Day, this holiday is an international celebration of herbs and herbal products. That covers a whole lot of plants, applications, and products. The purpose of this day is to encourage us to learn more about them and their uses. Armed with this knowledge, there are a whole lot of things that you can do with them, much more than you ever imagined. So, let the celebration begin!

There are hundreds of varieties, which can be used in a seemingly unlimited number of uses. The first thing we should do on this day is to learn more about the different types that exist. The herb family consists of the following types: aromatic, cosmetic, culinary, ornamental, and medicinal plants.

After learning more about the different kinds of herbs, we should pick a couple and grow them. May is the perfect month for planting and growing. You can grow them in a herb garden or the flower garden. Many varieties are easy to grow in containers on your patio or deck. See more on growing herbs.

Today is a great day to use them as you cook. Try a recipe that uses a herb that you have never cooked with before. They are a great salt substitute, making for healthier meals.

Today is also a good time to select a few herbal products. You’ll have no shortage of items to choose from. You can choose from lavender soaps, cachets, dried flower arrangements, medicinal herbs, and much more.

However you choose to delve into the world of herbs today, we hope you have a very aromatic and tasteful Herb Day!!!

About Garden Meditation Day

When is Garden Meditation Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 3

Walk out to your garden. Roll out your meditation mat, and assume a yoga position, as today is Garden Meditation Day. You and your plants are going to do some serious bonding on this May 3 holiday.

Every gardener knows that gardening is good for the mind, body, and soul. It is also known that meditation gives us inner peace and tranquility. It helps us to connect with ourselves, and even with nature. So, Garden Meditation Day is an outstanding merging of the values and benefits of gardening and meditation.

Per C.L, Fornari, the creator of this special day:

“Garden meditation day honors the fact that when we’re working in the landscape we have the opportunity if we choose to take it, to let the rest of the world fall away. This is indeed what meditation is: letting go of all thoughts, concerns, and worries and focusing on just one thing…in this case, what we’re doing in the garden. It is as calming as a mantra or focusing on the breath, to name two common forms of meditation. So those who seek a spiritual retreat, a calming yoga experience, actually have that in their backyards!”

For those of us who are already gardeners, we know this feeling full well. For those of you yet to try your hand at gardening, use today to find the joy, peace, serenity, and therapeutic value of gardening. You’ll be glad you did.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Garden Meditation Day

How can we celebrate and participate in Garden Meditation Day?

Fornari suggests you pick one thing to do. It could be pulling weeds, planting seedlings, turning soil, or spreading mulch. Go out with the idea that you’ll spend X amount of time on that task…it could be 20 minutes or two hours…it doesn’t matter but be realistic. Leave your cell phone in the house. That’s right, leave your phone behind! (You can do it.)

As you work, focus only on what your task at hand is. When you notice other things that have to be done, thank your mind for mentioning those but tell yourself you’ll think about those tasks later. Gently turn your mind and body back to the one job at hand every time you’re distracted. At the end of your work, or when your time finishes, take satisfaction in what you’ve accomplished. Take a deep breath, and then return to the world.

.Ps Don’t forget your meditation mat.

When is Frog Jumping Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 13

Frog Jumping Day is a great day to jump like a frog. Or, is today intended to jump “over” one? Either way, this May 13 holiday is certain to be a fun day. But, is this truly the reason for this day?  Read on………

The roots of this holiday goes back to Mark Twain’s first short story. It was first published in 1865 as “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”. Later, he published it as “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. It is also known under a third title “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.

While we have discovered many links and references to Frog Jumping Day evolving from this Mark Twain short story, we have yet to discover the reason for this particular date. May 13th is neither the date of Mark Twain’s birth, nor his death.

  • Jump and leap like a toad.
  • Read Mark Twain’s story “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”
  • Also, we don’t think Mark Twain would mind if you jumped around like one, or if you jumped over an actual frog today.
  • Have a frog jumping contest or race. You and your friends look for them. Then, race them against each other.
